Football University - Deciphering the reloading season
2008-04-12 01:55:00
Look around the division and it's not to hard to figure out what other teams are doing.  oakland is spending money they won't have in a year or two (salary cap hell cometh), but getting some big names in the meantime.  San Diego still has a quality team and can use the draft to build depth and build for the future.  Kansas City is just in deep trouble and needs to build for the long term. But what's going on with Denver?  They have made several FA moves by signing average talent with average dollars, and they have 9 picks so far for the draft (with a strong possibility of trading down and ending up with 10 or 11 picks).  Certain players have been dangled out for potential loss or trade (Hamza, Foxworth, Trade), some have been lost (Myers, Elam, Gold, Lepsis, Walker), and some have been kept (Lynch, Hamilton, Nalen).  Through into the mix of confusion a new defensive coordinator (Slowik) and the loss of longtime manager Sundquist, and the promotion of...

S.I. Agrees, This Draft Is Very Important To The Broncos.
2008-04-11 22:03:00
I have been saying for months now that this draft is easily the most important in Mike Shanahan's tenure with the team.  S.I.'s Don Banks seems to agree with me.  He breaks down the 5 teams with the most on the line this draft, and it shouldn't take long to figure out who is Number 1 on his list -- 1. Denver -- Two consecutive non-playoff seasons is an obvious factor adding to the sense of urgency in Bronco-land. The surprising and relatively late-in-the-draft-season departure of general manager Ted Sundquist is another, because now there's no one else to blame but coach Mike Shanahan if things don't work out on the personnel front. Denver's recent track record is spotty at best when it comes to identifying talent and building a roster. All those swings and misses on the defensive line. All those chances taken on players who came with some baggage in tow. The Broncos have nine overall picks, including two in the fourth, fifth and seventh rounds, but how they use the...

The Washington Redskins, represented by CaptChaosSidekick select... LIMAS SWEED, WR - TEXAS G.M. - CaptChaosSidekick -- The Washington Redskins have found themselves having to make late season scrambles to make the playoffs to due to lackluster performances on offense. Santana Moss and Antwan Randel El are versatile but have yet to provide Quarterback Jason Campbell with a reliable option, especially in the Red Zone. The Redskins Select Limas Sweed. Not since Art Monk have the Redskins possessed a wide receiver, of size capable of making clutch receptions. Entering his final season, Sweed was rated the best receiver in college football and one of the nation's top 25 draft prospects. He Possesses good quickness and change-of-direction agility, along with excellent leaping ability. His presence on the field will open up multiple targets in the new west coast offense for Jason Campbell.

MHR Broncos History Lesson - 5th Edition -- The Drive
2008-04-11 19:46:00
Dear Bronco Fans,You are cordially invited to an informal Coming-Out Party for Mr. John Albert Elway.  The date for this historic event is January 11, 1987 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium.  Please RSVP with Destiny at 777-7777.  We look forward to seeing you there. Sincerely, The Football Gods Tom Jackson's final season. This is an exciting post for me.  I've always told people that I became a Bronco fan on January 11, 1987, but during the course of my research for this piece I realized that my first Bronco memory took place several months before that date.  It was just eleven days after my eighth birthday on October 20, 1986. I can't quite remember all the details, but my memory tells me it was a Monday Night Football game.  If I am mistaken, please let it be because I cherish this memory whether or not its completely accurate. ;)  The Broncos were undefeated at the time and they were traveling to New York to face the Jets - who had...

The Detroit Lions, handled by tbell61, select.... JONATHON STEWART, RB - OREGON G.M. - tbell61 -- The departure of Kevin Jones obviously opens up a spot at the position, and we feel Stewart was the best available back on the board.  A junior at Oregon, he's 5'11", 225, is strong, has good inside speed, and excellent receiving skills.  We feel he can be our feature back. The Kansas City Chiefs, managed by jonnyr44, select.... BRANDEN ALBERT, OG - VIRGINIA G.M. - jonnyr44 -- A dream scenario for Kansas City has occurred. W/ no one available at #5 who they wanted to pay the money, trading down and picking up Lito Sheppard and an add'l 5th round pick was great. Had KC not traded down, I very well might have selected Albert at #5, only now we get to pay him like a late teen pick, and not top 5. Holy hell, this is how you work the draft people. Instead of getting one player at #5 and paying him boatloads of money, we'd get Lito Sheppard as CB and KR/PR, a 5th rounder, and Albert and it'll probably be cheaper to pay those 3 players than it would to pay Vernon Gholston, who was selected 5th in our mock draft. Why Albert? He can play anywhere on the line. at 6'5'' 310 pounds, he played G in college but could project as a LT. His versatility makes him more desirable than Otah from Pitt. He'll either be a great G or a very good tackle, and KC jus...

REPORT: Broncos and Dewayne Robertson Have Deal In Place
2008-04-10 21:48:00
Newsday's Tom Rock is "told" that the Broncos already have a new contract for DT Dewayne Robertson in place. Rock guesses that the Broncos and Jets will work out a draft-day deal, most likely involving a second-day pick. The second day now involves rounds three through seven, but it's doubtful the Jets could get more than a fifth-rounder. http://blogs.trb.com/sports/football/jets /blog/2008/04/the_rhodes_ripples.html

Mike Shanahan, The Broncos and The Draft -- A Look Back -- 1995
2008-04-09 19:24:00
We are quickly approaching the 2008 NFL Draft , the 14th draft for the Broncos under the guidance of Mike Shanahan.  With recent events, including the firing of GM Ted Sundquist, the spotlight is on Shanny as prepares for what looks to be the most important draft of his tenure.  Part of the fun of having a coach like Shanny around so long is we get the chance to look back at past successes and failures.  I will be doing that form now until the draft, starting with Shanny's first draft in 1995. The 1995 Draft was unique for the Broncos, to say the least.  The team didn't have a pick until the 4th round, thanks in part to a trade with Atlanta for WR Mike Pritchard.  Let's take a look at each pick, and how their career ended up.  At the end, I'll grade the draft and give my opinion. 4th Round -- Pick 23(121) -- Jamie Brown, OL(FLorida A&M) -- For a late 4th round selection, Brown was able to last longer than most players in the NFL.  Brown pl...

He can match up with the taller physically gifted NFL receivers. He has the makings of a shut down corner. Talib has good recovery speed if he makes a mistake and closes quickly on the ball. He can  also wins jump ball situations. Talib is versatile enough to play safety. Ray Rhodes will coach Talib up like Alex Gibbs coaches up the O-line. Talib needs to improve his mechanics and footwork as well as his play reading skills. He is a boom or bust player who will thrive under Rhodes tutelage. Hello, everyone!  I've been asked by TSG to post a Diary with my pick for the Denver Broncos in our community's Mock Draft and the rationale behind it.  And so, without further ado, it is my honor to present to you (below the fold) our newest Bronco! With the 17th pick in the MHR Mock Draft, the Denver Broncos select: Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt Though this is not a flashy pick and it may well be profoundly unpopular with a considerable portion of our fan base, it is simply the right thing to do for our team at this time.  I was initially prepared to select OT Ryan Clady of Boise State at #12 before trading down with Minnesota; the ability to chose Chris Williams at #17 while regaining our original third round pick instead is a real benefit.  It may be unlike the Broncos to make this kind of investment in this position, but we have rarely been faced with this level of need there before.  The sudden retirement of LT Matt Lepsis created a void and the...

2008 Draft: Devin Thomas, WR
2008-04-08 04:51:00
Almost Too Obvious To be sure, when the frantic first hour of the draft is ticking by, Shanahan and the Goodmans will be calling around to other team's warrooms looking for a feasible, and responsible way to trade into the top ten for Sedrick Ellis. They probably have an upper limit for how high they will trade, based on the salary they can afford to pay, but I would guess that they would consider anything up to #6 or so. Even if they didn't keep him beyond his rookie contract, it would be a solid way to spend that money in the meantime. And while the general consensus is that, if Denver misses out on Ellis, they will immediately start lining up offers to move down, one old gambler may just have other ideas: Denver may be looking for a trade partner; but what if they are looking to move up with this one as well? I will get to that scenario in a moment. First, I would like to draw your attention to exhibit A, arguably the best WR in this years draft, and a top 5 KR pro...

MHR Broncos History Lesson - 4th Edition
2008-04-06 19:51:00
Welcome to another edition of the Broncos History Lesson .  This week I will be covering the Broncos "trade of the century".  The historical trade that brought the face of the franchise to Denver, John Elway.  This trade is important to Bronco fans not because of how he helped Denver become a perennial winner, but because without him a large portion of us may not have even become Bronco fans in the first place. Yankees, 1981 John Elway was a rare athlete of his day.  He excelled not just in football, but in baseball as well.  He even threw a 93 MPH fast ball.  Although it was obvious he was far more talented as a football player, Elway preferred to keep his options open. In the summer of 1981 he signed a $150,000 contract to play Class A ball for the New York Yankees.  Elway batted .318 during his six week stint with the Yankees - not bad for a football player. I don't know about you, but seeing Elway in a Yankees uniform gives me the willie...

Football University - Building cred at MHR / Part 2
2008-04-05 18:33:00
Here's a list of ten things things that are worth keeping in mind for building a good rep at MHR.  Feel free to add a few things yourself in the comments section! Be humble.  There are a lot of sharp folks here with a lot of expertise in areas ranging from coaching to law to salary cap rules to combine evaluations.  There are also a lot of wise experts, those who realize that they don't know everything.  The best experts are the humble ones. Ask as many questions as you answer.  I get a lot of questions in some of the stories I write up for MHR.  It makes me feel good to be able to answer questions for folks (if I know the answer).  But I also realize that there are a lot of things that I want to learn, and I also realize that other people like to be asked questions too. Speak up!  People want to hear from you.  Never be afraid of giving your view, asking a question, or giving an answer.  This is a friendly place, and nobody shou...

WE HAVE A TRADE!!! This time, it is a trade among friends, so to speak.  The Detroit Lions(TBell61) have agreed to a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers(R8rH8r).  Of course, in reality, Lions HC Rod Marinelli coached under Monte Kiffin in Tampa so a trade like this could happen.  Below are the details -- Tampa Gets - #15 Overall Detroit Gets - #20, #83, #178 The view of the G.M.'s -- Detroit(tbell61) -- For the Lions, a team with multiple needs, this is all about collecting extra picks, especially in light of not having a compensatory pick anywhere in the draft.  We believe we can get a player who can help us at # 20, and now we have two additional picks. Tampa(R8rH8r) -- There are two driving factors behind this trade:  (1) Tampa Bay needs to reload at WLB and (2) Outside of Keith Rivers, the draft class is incredibly thin at the position.  To get this done, I was willing to invest multiple picks to move as high as pick #6.  After Rivers ...

2008 Draft Order: Latest Update
2008-04-05 05:43:00
The latest update of the MHR Draft Order chart is done, and as always, you can download it as a printable PDF. This version includes the 32 compensatory selections (none for Denver, of course), some inside info from Chris at Arrowhead Pride regarding the finalizing of the Bennett/Sims trade with the Bucs, as well as the latest draft splashes from free agency.  I also corrected some errors that were pointed out by the fine readers and commenters in this community, so I definitely recommend that you get this version to take advantage of that. Like the other versions, this one contains a numbered and referenced list of the details of each trade, as well as up to date numberings of the picks, and Denver's picks are highlighted.  I only expect to update this one final time, right before the draft, though if nothing major happens between now and then I may decide to let another update slide.   In the future I will work on a format that is a little more internet friendly, ...

SBNation Mock Draft....The Broncos Select...
2008-04-04 16:57:00
I figured the loyal readers of MileHighReport.com should be the first to know the selection I made in the SBNAtion Mock Draft before it gets posted.  With that in mind... With the 12th Pick in the SBNation Mock NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select.... DERRICK HARVEY, DE - FLORIDA Sure, this is a bit of a surprise pick.  The Broncos used two early picks in 2007 on defensive ends.  Let me start to explain by saying I am hoping the Broncos can find a way to trade down.  That is seeming tougher and tougher to do because everyone appears to be wanting to do the same thing.  In order to trade down, the Broncos need someone to want to trade up.   If a trade does not happen, the Broncos are going to be forced to make a selection they won't be especially excited by.  Sure, they are going to get a solid player, but most likely at a position they would like to not give #12 money. While it appears the popular thought is the Broncos will draft O-Line at #12, ...

The Chicago Bears, proudly represented by Bears Blogger WCG, select.... RASHARD MENDENHALL, RB - ILLINOIS G.M. - WCG -- I wanted this pick badly.  I knew the responsible thing to do would be to take an offensive linemen, but I just could not bear (pun intended) to see another potential superstar pass us by.  So I evaluated the linemen available and decided that only Ryan Clady would be enough to get me to give up Mendenhall.  For that I owe jaxon a thanks. The Bears are a running team...period.  So as much as you'd like to talk about how bad our passing game was/is it means nothing.  Our offense starts and ends with the run, so if it isn't working nothing is. Mendenhall is first on  some boards and third on others.  McFadden won't be available and the Bears cannot wait to see when Stewart will be available and what he has.  Mendenhalls has size and surprising speed for a guy his size.  He is just shy of 5' 11" and 225 lbs.  He c...

NFL Owners Meeting Concludes, Several Rules Changes Adopted
2008-04-02 18:45:00
The annual NFL Owner's Meeting s concluded today, with the announcement that several proposed rules changes would be adopted for the 2008 season.  The rules affected are as follows --  Among the proposals that were passed: A recommendation to eliminate force-out decisions on pass completions near the sidelines was approved. Now, officials will only have to decide whether a receiver landed in bounds or not. The intended result is more consistency. The "Phil Dawson field goal rule" change passed. Now, certain field goals can be reviewed by instant replay, including kicks that bounce off the uprights. Under the previous system, no field goals could be replayed. Coaches can now defer a decision on the opening coin toss. This is similar to the college rule. Previously, the winner of the coin toss could only choose to receive or kick off. A direct snap from center that goes backward will now be treated as a fumble. Previously, it was ruled a false start. The 5-yard face ...
