2008-04-29 02:52:00
1st Round NFL Draft Pick and "NEW" Tampa Bay Buccaneer CB Aqib Talib was introduced to the Media today.. Be sure to listen to the audio below. The guy LOVES football, many NFL players do, but if you take anything away from Talib's press conference, its that he has a passion for this sport. Talib on the meaning of his first name: "It's a Muslim name," Talib said. "I know my first name means, 'the last to come.' I'm the youngest of four kids so my first name means the last to come. My last name means ... I don't know."Gruden on the meaning of Talib's last name: "His name means 'good corner,' I hope," Gruden said.Talib on the impact of winning MVP of his team's Bowl Game: "I didn't even realize I had won a trophy.. I woke up the next morning and they told me I had won a trophy. I was just excited to win that game"Aqib on the being Drafted by the Buccaneers: "It's just wonderful," Talib said. "It's a dream come true for me. It's an honor to be able to start my NFL caree...

Head Coach Jon Gruden on 1st Round Draft Pick CB Aqib Talib
2008-04-28 13:45:00
Buccaneers.com provides a good collection of quotes from Head Coach Jon Gruden about 1st Round Draft Pick CB Aqib Talib: Gruden on Talib the person: "You're going to meet a guy that has tremendous confidence, he's got a real passion to play," Gruden said. "It's a contagious vibe. He's a leader at [KU], and when you watch him practice or when you see him play, you know who No. 3 is. You just can't help but walk away feeling his presence on a football field. He's that kind of competitor and playmaker. He's a guy that sits on the edge of the chair and he just wants to go out and play," Gruden said. "He wants to be in the yard playing ball, it's just what he does. We need that. We need some juice here, certainly some playmaking, and we need some confidence. Sometimes when he plays there's a little arrogance, honestly. I like this guy a lot. He's a great kid. Football means the world to him, and I think he'll represent us well. I expect him to come in here and full-force com...

No. 20 Presented by Buc'Em Aqib Talib Cornerback Kansas Man what a mind blower... I saw WR Devin Thomas on the cell phone and had his jersey ready to go, then Goodell says Talib and it was on... I'm not going to pretend like i know these guys better than our scouts and Monte Kiffin. If Talib is the guy, obviously he's the guy.. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS, WR Jordy Nelson ate his ASS up on the football field.. Jordy Nelson is a 2nd-3rd round prospect... Just sayin'..ESPN.com's Jeremy Green on the Bucs drafting Kansas CB Aqib Talib: That 2nd Round pick has got to be OFFENSE!!! Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas, 6'2, 205 Emerged as an elite cornerback early in the season, but struggled down the stretch against bigger receivers. Has good speed and great agility. Is a talker and a vocal leader. Mature for his age. Needs work in man coverage. - New Era ScoutingCB Aqib Talib :: 1st-to-Early 2nd Talib is the cream of this Kansas crop of draftees, having once been thought of by NFL "expert...

No. 83 Presented by Buc'Em Jeremy Zuttah Offensive Guard Rutgers I like the Bucs Pick , its not a pretty pick, but it provides depth on the line and we always need that. Arron Sears missed time at Guard last year and Luke Petitgout missed the entire year at Tackle. Zuttah can play both positions and helped Rutgers RB Ray Rice achieve the individual success he has...Checkout the Hog Mollie below... Are you kidding me!?!I would have liked a Defensive Tackle here, but you cant really argue with adding depth to the offensive line. Especially when you do it with a guy who's as durable as Zuttah. No. 115 Presented by Buc'Em Dre Moore Defensive Tackle Maryland Apparently the Bucs traded their two 5th Round Pick s (145 & 158) to the Cowboys for their 5th Round Pick (153) and 6th Round Pick (175)... And of course they swapped 4th Round Picks straight up. Should be interesting as DT Red Bryant just went off the board and we shall see him when we play the Seahawks.Again, its hard to question Monte Kiffin. I was hoping to see them pick up a Red Bryant type as he seems to have more fight in him, but Dre Moore is certainly capable of contributing on the lineDre Moore, DT, Maryland, 6'4, 311 Moore is a quick and powerful defensive tackle who could play inside in a 4-3 or end in a 3-4. No. 160 Presented by Buc'Em Josh Johnson Quarterback San Diego We all knew this was going to happen. Some more than others. Gruden can't resist it and Allen cant hold him back apparently. I actually like Johnson, love his mobility, and think he fits into Gruden's offense... This instantly marks the END to Chris Simms and Bruce Gradkowski's careers as Buccaneers. I'm sad to see the door close on Simms, as I think with a good line, he can be a very serviceable QB. As for Bruce, don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you... Way to go Ghosthippo on calling this pick early in the off-season... Josh Johnson, QB, San Diego, 6'3, 195 Prolific passer with good mobility and phenomenal arm strength. Very quick release. Gets through his progressions well. Smart. Makes very few mistakes with the ball. Almost never throws an interception. Playing against D-II competition. - New Era Scouting

No. 175 Presented by Buc'Em Geno Hayes Linebacker Florida State This pick is tough for me. As an avid Florida State Fan (you guys know this), I tend to hold our players in a higher light. Like a father does with his kids. With Geno early on in his career he was a great competitor, often playing above his abilities. He really took a step back his junior season. Alot of games he faded into the back ground. He had off the field issues (an altercation at a local bar with a cop, who hasnt?). Going into the Florida game, Geno went on the record saying he was ready to punish QB Tim Tebow and the Gators. The outcome? He finished the game with 1 tackle.. I'm not sure about this pick. Either Geno makes the team or he doesnt.. There's no in between with this guy.. I hope he's ready -->Geno Hayes, OLB, Florida State, 6'2, 218 Skinny and athletic outside linebacker who plays with tenacity. Appears unstoppable at times. Makes a lot of plays due to his excellent lateral speed. Team le...

No. 238 Presented by Buc'Em Cory Boyd Runningback South Carolina Mr. Irrelevant for the Bucs 2008 NFL Draft ends up being South Carolina's RB Cory Boyd. Why the Bucs drafted him, I DONT KNOW.. If Kenneth Darby from last season couldnt crack the line-up, nor will Mr. Boyd. Welcome to the team though.. Corey Boyd, RB, South Carolina, 6'1, 214 Nice size, speed combination. Runs hard and will break a lot of tackles. Doesn?t have a lot of burst to the outside. Has a frame to get even bigger. Average receiver. Questionable heart and ability to take pressure from coaches. Disappointed as a senior. - New Era Scouting

What: 2008 NFL Draft Where: Radio City Music Hall, New York When: 5:00PM Est Time (Round 7)Good Morning, believe it or not, Draft Day Number 2 is upon us. In several hours the Draft will be OVER! Just in case you were held hostage in a dark closet all last night, the Bucs drafted CB Aqib Talib from the University of Kansas with the 20th Pick in the 1st Round of the Draft. CB Mike Jenkins (Dallas Cowboys 1st Rd) and WR DeSean Jackson (Philadelphia Eagles 2nd Rd) were both on the board still. In the 2nd Round of the Draft, the Bucs traded their 52nd overall pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the Jags 2nd Rd Pick (No. 58), a 5th Round Pick this year (No. 158), and a 7th Round Pick for next years Draft. Not bad I would say. Initially it scared the bejebus (thanks ghosthippo) out of me, but it turned out for the best. The Bucs burned that 58th pick on Appalachian State's WR Dexter Jackson (DJax). Interesting NFL Draft buzz from Day 1
2008-04-27 15:27:00
It was a close call between Aqib Talib and Mike Jenkins. The Bucs appeared to be enamored with Talib's size (he's over 6-1 and weighs 202 pounds) and were drawn to his slight edge as a bigger playmaker. - Stephen Holder of the St. Pete TimesConsider me as one of the Fans that was absolutely shocked when the Bucs left Mike Jenkins and DeSean Jackson on the board in that first round. I guess I wanted Jenkins more for the wrong reasons: Home Town Kid, Plays CB (obviously), and could return Punts.. But when you watch him and Talib on tape, Aqib stands out more as his movements are fluid and lets be honest, he's quicker. As I've said since day one, if you can't defer to Monte Kiffin (and his scouts) when it comes to defensive draft picks, who can you? In the end it was a shocking pick, but thats what we've all come to love about the NFL Draft , anything can happen. Regarding their decision not to draft a receiver in the first round, it's my understanding that Devin Thomas did have ...

What: 2008 NFL Draft Where: Radio City Music Hall, New York When: 6:40PM Est Time (Round 2) Here we are, its FINALLY Draft Day!! I have no clue what todays events will bring. All I can say is I hope the Bucs inject speed and athleticism into this offense whether it be through the first, second, or third rounds. I've got my fingers crossed for a DJax or Jenkins Drafting, but to be honest, so long as we get a burner, i don't care if it comes in the form of a DJax, Donnie Avery (thanks PR), Devin Thomas, what have you. I'll be thoroughly disappointed if we don't get some electricity for the offense, because this draft allows for that beyond the 1st round... At any rate, hold on tight because we're in store for a loooong day!!! It could be three hours before the Bucs make that first selection!! SBNation Mock Draft: Are we smarter than the average Draftniks?SECOND ROUND 32. MIA - OT Jeff Otah DE Phillip Merling 33. STL - WR Devin Thomas WR Donnie Avery 34. WAS - QB Joe Fla...

Just sayin'.. ESPN.com's Jeremy Green on the Bucs drafting Kansas CB Aqib Talib: That 2nd Round pick has got to be OFFENSE!!! Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas, 6'2, 205 Emerged as an elite cornerback early in the season, but struggled down the stretch against bigger receivers. Has good speed and great agility. Is a talker and a vocal leader. Mature for his age. Needs work in man coverage. - New Era Scouting CB Aqib Talib :: 1st-to-Early 2nd Talib is the cream of this Kansas crop of draftees, having o...
