Former Bucs Defensive Backs Coach and current Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, Herm Edwards , has called out his former employer, well, in a way.. When asked about the Bucs (and Browns) abilities to sign C Jeff Faine (and K Josh Brown) nano-seconds after Free Agency began, Edwards had the following to say: "You'd have to ask Tampa," Edwards said. "I don't know what Tampa did. There were probably some deals done before (the start of the league year)," Edwards said. "We didn't cheat. We abided by the rules. Below and in this site's left sidebar you'll find the Bucs 2008 Draft Order .. It's a bit more normal than last season's (2) picks in the 2nd Round and (3) picks in the 7th Round. I think the Bucs need immediate help and further depth at the following positions (listed in order of importance): Wide Receiver, Cornerback, Punt/Kick Returner, Defensive Tackle, Offensive Line, and Tight End. We've got (6) Quarterbacks (forget that position), (5) Runningbacks (Dunn, Bennett, Graham, Williams, and Darby to an extent I guess), Linebacking Depth wouldnt be a horrible idea with Derrick Brooks probably playing in his 2nd to last season with the Bucs. We've got plenty at Safety and Defensive End... We sorely need help in the Punt/Kick Returning department, especially with Michael Pittman not returning. Despite the Raiders throwing endless amounts of cash at Free Agent DE Kevin Carter . The Old Man decided to return to the Bucs for one more season. I wasn't a fan of his signing last off-season and I'm still not (I'd rather see Haye, Adams, White and "Enter Draft Project Here" get more reps). Carter was non-existent when it came to pressuring the Quarterback, but he more than held his own when it came to stopping the run and filling gaps. With the Bucs adding Jimmy Wilkerson and Marquise Douglas this off-season, I really don't see how the lethargic Carter will get on the field, but it doesn't really matter when the young guys mentioned above will get the majority of the reps.

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting the Bucs have signed Free Agent Safety Eugene Wilson to a one year deal worth $1.8 million ($500k guarenteed). It's expected Wilson will serve as the teams replacement at Cornerback for CB Brian Kelly who signed with the Lions last week. He's definitely not coming in to play Safety unless Jermaine Phillips or Tanard Jackson go down and Sabby Piscitelli has yet to become playing time worthy. This signing does present an interesting situation.. Do the Bucs take a Cornerback with their first pick in April's NFL Draft? Wilson is only signed for one year, so the Bucs could certainly spend that pick on a CB they don't have to rush into the fray... We shall see

...UPDATE... The 49ers have released Veteran WR Darrell Jackson... Pro Football Talk lists the Bucs as a possible destination. At this point, why not? Bring in a cagillion players at one position and see who sticks.The 49ers have signed WR Bryant Johnson to a 1 Year deal, wow, one year? That's pretty sad. He clearly had a better position playing time wise with the Bucs and you would think monetarily as well with all the money the Bucs are throwing at free agents ($6mil to Dunn?)... Plus, the 49ers already have: Isaac Bruce, Darrell Jackson, Arnaz Battle, Ashley Lelie and Jason Hill at Wide Receiver. He's gonna have to battle (as he has his entire career) three receivers for a spot, much less the ball. Compare that to the Bucs Corps: Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, ???????, ????????, and ????????.. None of our other options are better than Bryant Johnson and Johnson would have easily been the #2 receiver.. ah well. Here's to you staying healthy this season and being able to re-coup ...

Bucs add Marques Douglas to Defensive Line Fray

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed DE Marques Douglas to a four year deal. You probably have no idea who Douglas is, here's a minimal refresher course: He led all defensive linemen in tackles behind the line of scrimmage last year. Douglas told newspapers that he'll be the starting left end on first and second down, but shift inside to defensive tackle on passing downs. He's 6'2, 292 lbs, and 31 years old That about all I can tell you about the big man. It'll be interesting to see what he gets paid. With Gaines Adams and Greg White on the roster, I wouldnt expect Douglas to start, but he's a wiley veteran so move over Greg... He may not have a ton sacks to prove it, but apparently this guy lives in the back field. As the Giants have proved, it doesnt hurt to have a stout rotation on the defensive line coming in and out of the game. Hopefully this doesnt preclude the Bucs from making a run at DE Julius Peppers should he ever make it to Free Agency

The Arizona Cardinals signed WR Larry Fitzgerald to a four year contract extension. This immediately eliminates Fitzgerald from any possible trade situations as the Cardinals have now freed up over $8 Million in cap space with the new deal. This move does make WR Anquan Boldin's future in the desert a little sketchy. Anquan is clearly the better Receiver Now and is making significantly less than Fitzgerald. Almost 7 million less a season. Despite freeing up over $8 million in cap space this off-season, the Cardinals are still headed for cap space headaches in the near future. Word on the street is... The Carolina Panthers are shopping DE Julius Peppers !!! You all know how much I would LOVE to have JP in a Bucs Jersey. As evidence by the shameless "Julius Peppers Countdown to Free Agency" in this sites sidebar. The guy had a down year finishing the season with 38 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 1 interception. At 5.5 Million for '07 I'm sure Panthers fans were looking for more out of The MAN. At any rate, his track record and overall demeanor suggests he'll have a bounce back season. Should the Panthers not extend his contract this off-season, there is no way he won't test Free Agency. If you're the Panthers, why let Peppers walk for nothing? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed Free Agent Tight End Ben Troupe. Troupe previously played for the Tennessee Titans for 4 years and played at the University of Florida prior to that. He clearly possesses the athletic ability I'm sure QB Jeff Garcia needs in order to remain on his two feet after releasing a pass. He's also a young guy who can challenge starting TE Alex Smith and also become more of a running mate with Smith as opposed to a mentoring type. Troupe's production has slipped the past two years, but I think that can be attributed to a young Quarterback coming in trying to learn the system. He progressed from his Rookie Season to his second season while playing with Veteran QB Steve McNair. It'll be interesting to see how he and Alex Smith help QB Jeff Garcia out this season.

With the Bucs recently signing Linebackers Leon Joe, Matt McCoy, and Teddy Lehman and adding them to their current crop: Derrick Brooks, Cato June, Barrett Ruud, Jeremiah Trotter, Quincy Black, Ryan Nece, Antoine Cash, Sam Olajubutu, and Adam Hayward; there's a possibility GM Bruce Allen is stock piling depth in an effort to free up one of his more sought after starting Linebackers, cough cough, LB Barrett Ruud... It's obvious the organization wasn't enamored with any of the Free Agent Offensive options on the market, so maybe Allen is looking to swing a trade for a Top Caliber Offensive Threat. The Giants are short at LB, but I'm not sure they have a need for Ruud with Pierce and would you be satisfied with TE Jeremy Shockey in return? Because there's no way Plaxico Burress will be moved. I'm beginning to see why the Bucs have yet to add a Wide Receiver this off-season... these guys are making insane cheddar. The Oakland Raiders have signed WR Javon Walker to a SIX YEAR 55 MILLION DOLLAR DEAL. $16 Million of that is guarenteed. My goodness.... for an oft injured guy no less. Sweet Heavens. WR Bryant Johnson must be licking his chops. It's crazy out here in the world of Wide Receiving Free Agency!!! Bernard Berrian got insane money and years. Stallworth got a crazy amount of years (7), and we never had a shot at Randy Moss, let's be serious.... This fan base ought to join the Front Office and gear up for the Draft, because there is NO WAY Allen and company are gonna bring in guys at that rate and nor should they, sheesh. Could you imagine the backlash had Allen brought in Javon at that price? Roy explains in the article above how those around the NFL assume the Bucs are waiting for situations in other cities to unfold in order to register that "Big Splash " of the off-season. Cummings immediately breaks down the Falcons releasing RB Warrick Dunn, the Broncos releasing WR Javon Walker, and the possibilities of the Bucs signing TE Ben Troupe (who has only scheduled and had a visit with the Bucs, good luck buddy) and LB Ted Lehman as potential splash moves. It gets better from there... Clayton insinuates that the NFC South suitors (our Bucs) stopped pursuit of Crumpler due to his potential reoccuring knee problems. I find this laughable for a club that is one off-season removed from signing a banged up Left Tackle and throwing away a 7th Round Draft Pick for a RETIRED PLAYER on a whim (a very tiny whim) that the player would ditch retirement and play for the Bucs. I've said it and I'll continue to say it; for a team that is in WIN NOW mode, potential knee injuries should not deter them from signing a playmaking player period. Especially when said player only signed a 2 year deal... Retirement Party: The Buccaneers (Former & Current) sent Alstott out in

Last night was huge if you cared at all about the career and man that was Mike Alstott. The Glazers held a Retirement Party for their beloved Full Back which included an invitation only, black tie-affair. The Party took place in a lounge at Raymond James Stadium. A few of the guests included: "Tony Dungy, Rod Marinelli, Mike Shula, John Lynch, Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, Warrick Dunn, Brad Johnson, Dexter Jackson, Trent Dilfer, Ronde Barber, Lorenzo Neal, Joe Jurevicius, Simeon Rice, Booger McFarland -- all of them and hundreds more were on hand Saturday to honor Alstott." - Stephen Holder of the St. Pete Times Alstott's best friend and teammate TE Dave Moore gave a toast followed by video clips including ESPN's Chris Berman, the Cowboy's Troy Aikman, and Subway's Jared. Whats left of Free Agency: WR Randy Moss?

With Wide Receivers like Bernard Berrian (Vikings), Donte Stallworth (Browns), and Jerry Porter (Jaguars) signing over the weekend, there isn't much left for the Bucs to extend a contract to. Even WR Devery Henderson has re-uped with the Saints (thank goodness). That leaves a handful of options left on the open market: #1: WR Randy Moss - He's the best receiver on this years market, but after Bernard Berrian reeled in a 6 year 42 million dollar deal, with $16 Million of it guarenteed, we both know the Bucs won't go that far with Randy Moss and I'm not sure that they should. #2: WR Bryant Johnson - This signing won't make a single fan excited for next season, but he would make more of an impact than any Rookie in next months NFL Draft (ANY ROOKIE). #3: WR Javon Walker - I think Javon is the biggest wildcard of all... The Bucs should announce the signing of TE John Gilmore to a Three Year Deal here shortly reports the Chicago Sun Times. Gilmore is excited to be a Buc and has already passed his physical. In 6 years, Gilmore has 21 receptions and 194 yards, the guy is clearly coming in to BLOCK The Bucs have scheduled a visit for free agent TE Ben Troupe. I'd rather Draft a TE at this point, if were going to sign guys that are no better than what we have. Free agent LB Lance Briggs will reportedly meet with the Buccaneers. This is news to me, I mean with Derrick Brooks, Barrett Ruud, and Cato June (and Quincy Black to an extent), you would think our LB'ing Corps would be locked up, but hey, I know DB could be gone sooner than later so I can understand the Bucs looking to Briggs...
