Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Herm Edwards: "You'd have to ask Tampa&q
2008-03-26 01:59:00 Former Bucs Defensive Backs Coach and current Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, Herm Edwards , has called out his former employer, well, in a way.. When asked about the Bucs (and Browns) abilities to sign C Jeff Faine (and K Josh Brown) nano-seconds after Free Agency began, Edwards had the following to say: "You'd have to ask Tampa," Edwards said. "I don't know what Tampa did. There were probably some deals done before (the start of the league year)," Edwards said. "We didn't cheat. We abided by the rules. That's how you're supposed to do it, and that's what we did" - KansasCity.com All I can say is this: Tons of teams do it, Herm more-than-likely did it when he jumped from the Jets to the Chiefs. Also, reports have stated that the Bucs called Faine at exactly 12:01AM to talk contracts. I mean knowing Herm and his clock management skills, he probably waited until after lunch the following day to extend a feeler out to Faine that the Chiefs were interested. By then, Faine ...
Sport Projections: 2008 NFL Blogger Mock Draft
2008-03-25 13:00:00 I was asked about two weeks ago to take part in Chris Fry's Sport Projections Blogger Mock Draft .. Below you'll find the results. Keep in mind, this was before the Bucs signed Wilson to help sure up any questions we had at Cornerback, plus I couldnt believe the guy I picked slipped so far.. If I did the Mock Draft Today my pick would probably be a little different... Never the less, here it is: PICK TEAM PLAYER WEBSITE 1 Miami Chris Long DE Virginia www.thephinsider.com My feelings on this will probably change weekly, especially once free agency starts. But right now, assuming the Dolphins can't trade the pick, Chris Long is probably the selection. The new regime in Miami wants to build this team from the inside out and Long is a Parcells kind of guy. He's also the safest bet in terms of investing $30+ million in guarantees that the top pick will command. 2 St. Louis Glenn Dorsey DT LSU mvn.com/nfl-rams I'd prefer the Rams trade down from th... Draft Buzz: Players the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are interested in...
2008-03-24 12:47:00 Who might the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look at in next month's NFL Draft ? Just take a look below at the list of players the Bucs are rumored to be interested in: WR Andre Caldwell (Florida) 6'1, 200lbs - Big-framed receiver who has a burst in the short area game. Rarely gets jammed. Displays good body control to keep his balance and work routes correctly. Hands are good but not great. Not much of a playmaker after the catch. Should buck the trend on Gators receivers. WR Jordy Nelson (Kansas State) 6'2, 213lbs - A former walk-on who has worked into an All-American. Great in the slot. Good hands and speed. Very elusive. Consistent route runner who finds openings and reads the defense well. Will be a great asset as a slot receiver and special teams ace. WR Devin Thomas (Michigan State) 6’2, 215lbs - This year, Thomas has emerged as one of the top receivers in the nation. He has good size, and while not a burner, he has enough speed to make plays downfield. Thomas, a junior ... More About: Players , Buzz
2008 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Draft Order
2008-03-23 16:06:00 Below and in this site's left sidebar you'll find the Bucs 2008 Draft Order .. It's a bit more normal than last season's (2) picks in the 2nd Round and (3) picks in the 7th Round. I think the Bucs need immediate help and further depth at the following positions (listed in order of importance): Wide Receiver, Cornerback, Punt/Kick Returner, Defensive Tackle, Offensive Line, and Tight End. We've got (6) Quarterbacks (forget that position), (5) Runningbacks (Dunn, Bennett, Graham, Williams, and Darby to an extent I guess), Linebacking Depth wouldnt be a horrible idea with Derrick Brooks probably playing in his 2nd to last season with the Bucs. We've got plenty at Safety and Defensive End... We sorely need help in the Punt/Kick Returning department, especially with Michael Pittman not returning. Michael Spurlock and Chad Lucas arent bad options, but Ike Hilliard returned Punts at times last season, it's time to upgrade.. Here's the Draft Order (I suppose its subject to change wit... Meet WR/PR DeSean Jackson (California) potential Tampa Bay Buc Draft Pick
2008-03-22 01:10:00 DeSean Jackson is first and foremost a dual threat. He excels at receiving and returning the football, color me intrigued. Jackson finished with 52 career plays of 20 yards or more. Scout.com lists Jackson as the Nation’s 7th best Wide Receiving Prospect. Before enrolling in Cal, DeSean participated in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, he caught 7 balls for 141 yards. He also attempted a summersault for a touchdown and landed on the 1 YARD LINE, hah! A Heisman hopeful last season, a right thigh injury limited his touches. Jackson also missed the 1st Quarter of Cal’s 2007 Armed Forces Bowl for breaking undisclosed team rules.DeSean at Cal’s Pro Days Some people wear Superman pajamas. Draft History: NFL's 10th Best Draft ever... 1995 Buccaneers Class
2008-03-20 17:41:00 Alot of folks consider Rich McKay taking over as Bucs GM in '95 as the tipping point for the Bucs Organization. The point in time where the Franchise started to reverse its fortunes and become a respectable and successful organization. That 1995 off-season started with the NFL's 10th Best Draft of ALL-TIME. Don't believe me? Click here to see the video footage. The Bucs 1995 Draft consisted of the following: 1st Round 12th Pick - DT Warren Sapp (Miami) 1st Round 28th Pick - OLB Derrick Brooks (FSU) 2nd Round 11th Pick - DB Melvin Johnson 4th Round 7th Pick - FS Jerry Wilson 5th Round 9th Pick - CB Clifton Abraham (FSU) 6th Round 8th Pick - LB Wardell Rouse I'm shocked myself to see that Drafting Sapp and Brooks would be considered the 10th Best NFL Draft selection of ALL-Time. Granted they turned the Franchise around and transcended what most Bucs Fans think of when thinking about the Pewter and Red. It's not like the rest of those guys from that '95 ... Bengals WR Chad Johnson will NEVER EVER dawn a Buccaneers Jersey
2008-03-20 02:45:00 We've talked alot about the Bucs and pursuing Wide Receivers via trade this off-season. A month ago, Bengals WR Chad Johnson was the one Receiver Bucs Fans who frequented Buc 'Em wanted to see in Red -n- Pewter. We can all forget that day dream, there is NO WAY the Bucs would bring Ocho Cinco aka "Show me the Money" to Tampa. On the set of NFL Network's Total Access Tuesday, Chad had the following to say when asked about wanting more money: "I don't want no money," Johnson said. "Wait a minute, stop 85. It's always about the money. This is a business. You play this game for a reason, because it's about the money. We fill those stands for those owners because it's about the money. Coaches want to win because you get new deals because it's about the money. Players want to play at a very high level because you get money. ... Chad continues to play at a very high level, so he can get that money. But right now in this situation, I don't want any money from where I am. That's ... More About: Dawn , Chad Johnson
Anquan Boldin won't force Cardinals hand, but Agent Rosenhaus could
2008-03-19 04:56:00 Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin has had time to contemplate his teammates recent contract extension, namely the dollars and cents of the matter. Boldin on Larry Fitzgerald's contract extension: Having been asked "Did Larry Fitzgerald's new four-year $40 million contract leave [him] smiling? Boldin replied, "Yeah". "It lets you know what's out there." - Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic Don't think for one minute that Anquan is about to start demanding this and that from his employer: "I leave that up to my agent (Drew Rosenhaus)," Boldin said. "They'll go back and forth. He'll keep me in the loop for the most part, but I can't be worried about that. I think when players get involved in that, that starts to affect their play on the field. Me, I can go home and sleep good at night, staying out of the business side of it and just concentrating on what I need to do. Overwhelming majority of Bucs Fans would TRADE for Julius Peppers
2008-03-19 00:41:00 Last week we ran a Poll at Buc 'Em to gauge Bucs Fans interest in trading for the Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers . There had been rumors that Peppers had officially been put on the trade block. With the idea in mind, that trades within the division almost never happen, especially for players with Julius' upside, over 100 of you participated in the poll. An overwhelming majority of Bucs Fans would trade for the Panthers DE Julius Peppers... With that said, it's time to make trade offers.. What? That's right, I submitted a trade offer to Cat Scratch Reader blogger, Jaxon, who blogs about the Carolina Panthers for SBNation. What was the offer you ask? I offered up our 1st Round Pick (#20) for next month's NFL Draft and I also included a 2nd Day Pick (3rd Round Pick) for next seasons NFL Draft.. What do you think? Did I offer too much? Too little? Will the fans over there accept the trade offer? We'll see in the coming days. In the meantime, tell me what you think? Imagine G... More About: Trade
Bucs bring back Old Man Rivers aka DE Kevin Carter
2008-03-18 19:10:00 Despite the Raiders throwing endless amounts of cash at Free Agent DE Kevin Carter . The Old Man decided to return to the Bucs for one more season. I wasn't a fan of his signing last off-season and I'm still not (I'd rather see Haye, Adams, White and "Enter Draft Project Here" get more reps). Carter was non-existent when it came to pressuring the Quarterback, but he more than held his own when it came to stopping the run and filling gaps. With the Bucs adding Jimmy Wilkerson and Marquise Douglas this off-season, I really don't see how the lethargic Carter will get on the field, but it doesn't really matter when the young guys mentioned above will get the majority of the reps. CADILLAC WILLIAMS UPDATE: Expects to be back this Season
2008-03-15 01:12:00 Stephen Holder (St. Pete Times) relays the Bucs Cadillac Williams FIRST discussion with the Media since he started rehabbing from Patellar Tendon surgery back in December. Caddy on playing in '08: "Oh yeah, no doubt," Williams said. "I definitely have a great shot. I feel good about it. Me personally, I'd love to be ready for training camp. Ready for opening day. Of course, that's my goal. But at the same time, we've got to be smart with it" - St. Pete Times Caddy on the thought of never playing again: "You're laying in bed, you're doing rehab and you can't move your leg," Williams said. "So you start to think that even though the doctor is telling you, 'Whoa, they're just speculating, be patient.' But we're human. You get to thinking like, "Man, maybe it is [career threatening]. But at the same time, I bounced back, did a lot of praying and I feel like I'm going to be okay. Everybody knows it's a patellar tear," Williams said. "But it's something that I don't fee... Buccaneers sign Safety Eugene Wilson or is he a Cornerback?
2008-03-15 00:29:00 Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting the Bucs have signed Free Agent Safety Eugene Wilson to a one year deal worth $1.8 million ($500k guarenteed). It's expected Wilson will serve as the teams replacement at Cornerback for CB Brian Kelly who signed with the Lions last week. He's definitely not coming in to play Safety unless Jermaine Phillips or Tanard Jackson go down and Sabby Piscitelli has yet to become playing time worthy. This signing does present an interesting situation.. Do the Bucs take a Cornerback with their first pick in April's NFL Draft? Wilson is only signed for one year, so the Bucs could certainly spend that pick on a CB they don't have to rush into the fray... We shall see More About: Sign , Buccaneers
San Francisco 49ers sign last of decent WR's on Free Agency Market
2008-03-15 00:18:00 ...UPDATE... The 49ers have released Veteran WR Darrell Jackson... Pro Football Talk lists the Bucs as a possible destination. At this point, why not? Bring in a cagillion players at one position and see who sticks. The 49ers have signed WR Bryant Johnson to a 1 Year deal, wow, one year? That's pretty sad. He clearly had a better position playing time wise with the Bucs and you would think monetarily as well with all the money the Bucs are throwing at free agents ($6mil to Dunn?)... Plus, the 49ers already have: Isaac Bruce, Darrell Jackson, Arnaz Battle, Ashley Lelie and Jason Hill at Wide Receiver. He's gonna have to battle (as he has his entire career) three receivers for a spot, much less the ball. Compare that to the Bucs Corps: Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, ???????, ????????, and ????????.. None of our other options are better than Bryant Johnson and Johnson would have easily been the #2 receiver.. ah well. Here's to you staying healthy this season and being able to re-coup ... Bucs add Marques Douglas to Defensive Line Fray
2008-03-14 00:43:00 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed DE Marques Douglas to a four year deal. You probably have no idea who Douglas is, here's a minimal refresher course: He led all defensive linemen in tackles behind the line of scrimmage last year. Douglas told newspapers that he'll be the starting left end on first and second down, but shift inside to defensive tackle on passing downs. He's 6'2, 292 lbs, and 31 years old That about all I can tell you about the big man. It'll be interesting to see what he gets paid. With Gaines Adams and Greg White on the roster, I wouldnt expect Douglas to start, but he's a wiley veteran so move over Greg... He may not have a ton sacks to prove it, but apparently this guy lives in the back field. As the Giants have proved, it doesnt hurt to have a stout rotation on the defensive line coming in and out of the game. Hopefully this doesnt preclude the Bucs from making a run at DE Julius Peppers should he ever make it to Free Agency More About: Line
Buccaneers to meet with WR D.J. Hackett Today and others
2008-03-13 13:34:00 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set to meet with Free Agent Wide Receiver D(eAndre).J(ames). Hackett today reports the Pewter Report. Hackett was a 5th Round pick in '04 out of Colorado. He missed 10 games last season for the Seattle Seahawks with a sprained ankle. He's missed 31 of 64 starts in his career, you would think D.J.'s ability to stay injured would scare off Allen and Gruden, but apparently it doesnt. Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune is reporting that the Agent of Wide Receivers Bryant Johnson (Cardinals) and Drew Carter (Panthers) is weighing his clients collective options and the Bucs are apparently in the mix: "We're going to take the next couple days and go over the offers we have and take it from there," said Joel Segal, the agent for Johnson and Carter, both [one] of whom are considering Tampa Bay as a destination. - Tampa Tribune. I think a Bryant Johnson signing would be a step in the right direction. A signing like that would allow the Bucs to focus on a Cor... More About: Today , Meet
Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald signs extension, Boldin on way out?
2008-03-12 19:06:00 The Arizona Cardinals signed WR Larry Fitzgerald to a four year contract extension. This immediately eliminates Fitzgerald from any possible trade situations as the Cardinals have now freed up over $8 Million in cap space with the new deal. This move does make WR Anquan Boldin's future in the desert a little sketchy. Anquan is clearly the better Receiver Now and is making significantly less than Fitzgerald. Almost 7 million less a season. Despite freeing up over $8 million in cap space this off-season, the Cardinals are still headed for cap space headaches in the near future. In step the Bucs... with a trade the Cardinals can't refuse. Who is a part of that trade might you ask? I would start with this years 1st round draft pick and see where the Cards would like to go from there. Would you trade for Anquan Boldin? If yes, what would you send over there for him?Hopefully Bruce Allen can make a deal happen, if not... Never fear Bucs fans. In 4 years at the age of 27, Fitzgerald wil... Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers on Trade Market?
2008-03-12 02:27:00 Word on the street is... The Carolina Panthers are shopping DE Julius Peppers !!! You all know how much I would LOVE to have JP in a Bucs Jersey. As evidence by the shameless "Julius Peppers Countdown to Free Agency" in this sites sidebar. The guy had a down year finishing the season with 38 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 1 interception. At 5.5 Million for '07 I'm sure Panthers fans were looking for more out of The MAN. At any rate, his track record and overall demeanor suggests he'll have a bounce back season. Should the Panthers not extend his contract this off-season, there is no way he won't test Free Agency. If you're the Panthers, why let Peppers walk for nothing? I know interdivision trades are almost blasphemy, but considering there arent many teams lining up to take on Julius' pending contract extension, the Bucs with enormous Cap Space are in a position to take the plunge. With that I ask: surveys - Take Our Poll More About: Market , Trade
Buccaneers sign another WR Project, this year its Antonio Bryant's turn
2008-03-12 02:27:00 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have added another Wide Receiver to their arsenal. Sign ing former San Francisco 49er, Antonio Bryant, who will attempt to do what David Boston before him could not do and that's make the Bucs Wide Receiving Unit better. Bryant is a 6'2 190 pound 26 year old receiver. He's only two years removed from going over a 1,000 yards on the season for the Cleveland Browns. He missed all of 2007 because nobody would give him a flyer. Why would nobody give him a flyer you ask? Because he's gone at it with two of his previous Head Coaches in the Fins Bill Parcells and the 49ers Mike Nolan. Toward the end of the season in '06 he was stopped for going over 100 miles an hour in his Lamborghini, while... you guessed it, driving under the influence, resisting arrest and was charged with reckless driving. He was suspended for the next four ball games, two of which would carry over into the '07 season. From news of the weird, while other Football Players were, shockingly, p... Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sign Tight End Ben Troupe
2008-03-12 02:26:00 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed Free Agent Tight End Ben Troupe. Troupe previously played for the Tennessee Titans for 4 years and played at the University of Florida prior to that. He clearly possesses the athletic ability I'm sure QB Jeff Garcia needs in order to remain on his two feet after releasing a pass. He's also a young guy who can challenge starting TE Alex Smith and also become more of a running mate with Smith as opposed to a mentoring type. Troupe's production has slipped the past two years, but I think that can be attributed to a young Quarterback coming in trying to learn the system. He progressed from his Rookie Season to his second season while playing with Veteran QB Steve McNair. It'll be interesting to see how he and Alex Smith help QB Jeff Garcia out this season. Warrick Dunn returns to Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2008-03-11 12:44:00 The terms are yet to be disclosed (2 years 6 million dollar contract, 2 million guarenteed), but former RB Warrick Dunn , who was recently released by the Falcons this off-season, has signed a contract to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers reports Stephen Holder of the St. Pete Times. Warrick Dunn on his return: "I'm just happy to be playing with a group of guys that have been playing hard, that have played well and are going out each week and competing," Dunn said. "I'm really thrilled about the opportunity to try to win some games and move forward. Right now, I don't know everyone, so I can't say a whole hell of a lot. But I'm looking forward to being part of the team and to come in and contribute any way I can. Bucs stock piling LB's in order to trade for a TE or WR?
2008-03-06 14:08:00 With the Bucs recently signing Linebackers Leon Joe, Matt McCoy, and Teddy Lehman and adding them to their current crop: Derrick Brooks, Cato June, Barrett Ruud, Jeremiah Trotter, Quincy Black, Ryan Nece, Antoine Cash, Sam Olajubutu, and Adam Hayward; there's a possibility GM Bruce Allen is stock piling depth in an effort to free up one of his more sought after starting Linebackers, cough cough, LB Barrett Ruud... It's obvious the organization wasn't enamored with any of the Free Agent Offensive options on the market, so maybe Allen is looking to swing a trade for a Top Caliber Offensive Threat. The Giants are short at LB, but I'm not sure they have a need for Ruud with Pierce and would you be satisfied with TE Jeremy Shockey in return? Because there's no way Plaxico Burress will be moved. Of course the added depth could be just that: Added Depth. Leon Joe was signed last off-season and didnt make the team. Matt McCoy was a second round pick who's yet to pan out, and Teddy L... Raiders go BONKERS with WR Javon Walker Contract
2008-03-05 19:00:00 I'm beginning to see why the Bucs have yet to add a Wide Receiver this off-season... these guys are making insane cheddar. The Oakland Raiders have signed WR Javon Walker to a SIX YEAR 55 MILLION DOLLAR DEAL. $16 Million of that is guarenteed. My goodness.... for an oft injured guy no less. Sweet Heavens. WR Bryant Johnson must be licking his chops. It's crazy out here in the world of Wide Receiving Free Agency!!! Bernard Berrian got insane money and years. Stallworth got a crazy amount of years (7), and we never had a shot at Randy Moss, let's be serious.... This fan base ought to join the Front Office and gear up for the Draft, because there is NO WAY Allen and company are gonna bring in guys at that rate and nor should they, sheesh. Could you imagine the backlash had Allen brought in Javon at that price? Bucs to make a Big Splash? WR #80...
2008-03-03 21:44:00 Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune must be delirious from all of the off-season work he's been doing... Roy explains in the article above how those around the NFL assume the Bucs are waiting for situations in other cities to unfold in order to register that "Big Splash " of the off-season. Cummings immediately breaks down the Falcons releasing RB Warrick Dunn, the Broncos releasing WR Javon Walker, and the possibilities of the Bucs signing TE Ben Troupe (who has only scheduled and had a visit with the Bucs, good luck buddy) and LB Ted Lehman as potential splash moves. Hah! These are far from splash moves, unless of course the Bucs are splashing in a pool of selfpity. Roy Cummings did shed some good light on the Bucs potential future dealings in regards to a one Bryant Johnson. If (stop laughing, come on stop) Johnson DOES NOT sign with the Buffalo Bills, he will then schedule a meeting with the Tampa Bay Bucs.... Free Agent TE Alge Crumpler to sign with Titans?
2008-03-03 13:25:00 ...UPDATE...ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that TE Alge Crumpler has in fact agreed to terms on a two year deal with the Tennessee Titans and all that's left is for Alge to sign the contract. It gets better from there... Clayton insinuates that the NFC South suitors (our Bucs) stopped pursuit of Crumpler due to his potential reoccuring knee problems. I find this laughable for a club that is one off-season removed from signing a banged up Left Tackle and throwing away a 7th Round Draft Pick for a RETIRED PLAYER on a whim (a very tiny whim) that the player would ditch retirement and play for the Bucs. I've said it and I'll continue to say it; for a team that is in WIN NOW mode, potential knee injuries should not deter them from signing a playmaking player period. Especially when said player only signed a 2 year deal... Alge's wife also liked the prospect of living in Tennessee, but I'm sure another added million to Alge's 1 million signing bonus could have persuaded her. Th... Whats left of Free Agency: WR Randy Moss?
2008-03-02 15:08:00 With Wide Receivers like Bernard Berrian (Vikings), Donte Stallworth (Browns), and Jerry Porter (Jaguars) signing over the weekend, there isn't much left for the Bucs to extend a contract to. Even WR Devery Henderson has re-uped with the Saints (thank goodness). That leaves a handful of options left on the open market: #1: WR Randy Moss - He's the best receiver on this years market, but after Bernard Berrian reeled in a 6 year 42 million dollar deal, with $16 Million of it guarenteed, we both know the Bucs won't go that far with Randy Moss and I'm not sure that they should. #2: WR Bryant Johnson - This signing won't make a single fan excited for next season, but he would make more of an impact than any Rookie in next months NFL Draft (ANY ROOKIE). #3: WR Javon Walker - I think Javon is the biggest wildcard of all... Is he healthy? How much is he wanting to be paid? Is he a cancer to a Football Squad? Without knowing how much he expects to be paid, its hard to advocate the Bu... More About: Agency , Free , Left
