Sit ?n Go Strategy by Collin Moshman - Book Review
2007-10-12 08:51:00 Lately I have been playing a ton of SNG’s and have built a pretty decent roll back from nothing on my two favorite sites that actually allow Americans, Rednines and Cake Poker. I can’t believe how bad the players are in the 6 max turbo type structures on these sites. Cake Poker also has just ... More About: Strategy , Book Review , Book Reviews , Review , Book
Poker Bots
2007-08-21 21:27:00 Recently I found that someone is selling a poker bot based on the short stack strategy posted on this site. I just want to clarify here that I have never been involved in botting whatsoever, do not condone it in any way, and have no association with those making or selling this bot (I actually found the site checking my web stats.) As a side note, botting is probably unstoppable but I am disappointed at the lack of measures taken by the poker sites to stop this practice, as it is bad not only for the professional player, but for the fish and sites themselves as well. Limit Hold?em with Short Stacks
2007-08-12 12:10:00 A few months back Schneids, who is one of the best limit hold’em players in the world, posted something on 2+2 about Barry Greenstein’s book which basically suggested playing with short stacks even in limit games where the players were close in skill level. Now, I always thought short stacking in limit games was for ... More About: Short , Stacks , Hold , Tacks
6 Max Sit and Go (SNG) Tournaments
2007-08-12 05:36:00 Some people have asked in recent weeks about possible strategy adjustments for shorthanded SNG’s. Although they are a little more difficult to beat with robotic play, these tournaments are in my opinion far more profitable for the skilled player than their full table counterparts. The strategy changes to make really depend on the payout structure of ... More About: Tournaments , Tournament , Amen
Rednines Poker
2007-08-04 06:54:00 A lot of people have been asking me through e-mail about where to play the short stack and SNG strategies discussed on this site. There may be better sites for other games, but without a doubt the sites I would recommend above all others for short stack play and lower buyin SNG’s are those on ... More About: Poker , Poke
Game Theoretically Correct Resteal Ranges In Heads Up NLHE
2007-07-31 18:35:00 Most players will raise preflop with a large percentage of their hands to 3 times the big blind from the button in heads-up tournament no limit hold’em. Responding to these raises through the resteal is the key to playing winning heads-up poker with a short stack at the end of SNG’s. With say, 15 to ... More About: Game , Este , Range , Heads , Ally
Heads Up Play with Medium Stack Sizes in Sit and Go Tournaments
2007-07-31 18:04:00 An always annoying situation when multi-tabling SNG’s is to get heads up with relatively deep stacks of 15 to 30 big blinds or so. Too deep to simply push or fold preflop, with these deeper stacks one must play some actual poker. This can be a real pain when one is playing several other tournaments ... 2007-07-17 01:20:00 Hi all, I haven’t updated this blog in a while, largely because I moved somewhere with no internet and no easy way to get it (these are crap apartments with no digital cable/phone for cable/DSL, I could play like $150 to get a phone line for dialup, but I move somewhere else next month so I ... Poker is a Long Season
2007-05-03 12:09:00 Today I was reading around at Baseball Prospectus, which by the way is the greatest site ever if you like baseball, and took a look at the playoff odds report for the Chicago Cubs, where a bunch of Monte Carlo simulations are done and winners and odds are reported. Being early in the season, you ... More About: Poker , Other , Season , Long , Seas
Bluffing on the Flop in Sit and Go Tournaments
2007-04-29 09:26:00 A lot of players like to open limp in late position in a sit and go tournament, even when the blinds are relatively large compared to stacks (say 5-10bb or so). This is usually a donkey play, considering they could raise instead and possibly add 15-30% to their stack. Despite this, often you will find ... Continuation Betting as a Total Bluff | Short Stack Strategy Part 12
2007-04-27 20:37:00 As we have seen in the last article, usually if you have caught any piece of the flop, whether it be a gutshot, a pair, or strong overcards + backdoor possibilities, you should fire a good-sized bet on the flop and often be willing to go to the felt with your hand. But some of ... More About: Strategy , Part , Trat , Stra , Total

Ace-King is Not a Good Hand in Sit N Go Tournaments
2007-04-23 05:46:00 In a cash game where the stacks are not too deep, or a multi-table tournament, usually you are happy to get it in preflop with ace king. The small probability your opponent will show up with AQ or worse combined with the low likelihood of them having AA or KK given you hold one of ... More About: Tour , Name , King , Good , Hand
Monte Carlo Simulation of Multi-Table Poker Tournaments
2007-04-18 20:01:00 Everybody knows that multi-table poker tournaments are different than sit and go tournaments, or even cash games. Because of the increasing blinds and top-heavy prize structure, the emphasis is on taking gambles to win the tournament, or at least final table, since that is where the money is to be made. “Go big or go ... Sit and Go Strategy - ICM Adjustments in the Early Game, Preflop All-in Sit
2007-04-16 05:04:00 One thing many people don’t understand about playing pots in SNG’s is that they are heavily raked. Yes, that’s right, even after taking your initial entry fee, the scumbag money-hungry poker sites continue to take a percentage out of each pot. Well, actually, it’s a little different than that, and in fact, you aren’t paying ... More About: Strategy , Just , Game , Early , Trat
Independent Chip Model (ICM) in SNG?s - An Introduction
2007-04-15 17:45:00 Failure to understand the Independent Chip Model , or ICM, is the reason why most people play badly to start off in poker SNG’s, at least until they learn about the concept. ICM is what is used to calculate finish probability based on initial stack sizes. As you know if you have read any of the ... More About: Introduction , Intro
Why You Should Buy in Short Even if You?re a Deep Stack Player
2007-04-15 04:51:00 Most people who are reading this probably play online, and this advice may or may not apply to you, depending on your style. For example, if you play 10 tables with a HUD, it probably doesn’t matter. But if you only play a couple of tables, or play live, you can really benefit if you ... Short Stack No Limit Hold’em and Popular Opinion
2007-04-09 11:08:00 Recently there have been a great deal of posts on the twoplustwo forums (links taken down because they went back to the old design and all the links broke, but thank god they did!) about short stack play. There seem to be two schools of thought: OMFG I hate short stackers no skill donkeys lol turning cash games into donkaments why don’t you go buy-in full at a lower game fish die in a fire ratholer scum HYACHACHACHACHA. I love short stackers they’re huge fish and make the games good, 20bb all-in with any ace and any pair, can’t get enough of them in my games. Looking at both sides, you can easily see why short stack play is so profitable. Part 1 is usually made up of the good, solid winning deep stack no limit hold’em players, who rely on a somewhat loose-aggressive strategy made up of raising with too many hands for too much money compared to the amount in the pot preflop. They might be tough on the later streets when the bets get big, but these players ar... More About: Pop , Opinion , Popular , Short , Hold
SNG Strategy Guide - Part 6, More Pushing Range Adjustments
2007-04-07 09:56:00 As covered in the last article, usually in a SNG you can do well enough just looking at stack sizes and your hand, but there are a few other things to consider before making an all-in decision. Let’s take a look at some of the more common exceptional cases as they apply to these tournaments. The ... More About: Strategy , Men , Just , Guide , Part
Short Stack Strategy - Marginal Postflop Situations, Part 11
2007-04-03 09:35:00 As profitable as the last article showed that they were, unfortunately, you can’t always flop a no-brainer all-in hand like top pair, even playing premium hands like you will usually be doing with a short stack. Short Stack Hold?em Strategy - Slowplaying a Made Hand - Part 10
2007-03-28 23:34:00 The previous article on short stacking discussed a somewhat vulnerable hand. In Texas Hold’em, this will usually be the case. After all, the game of hold’em in general became popular in part because of all the drawing possibilities. But sometimes you will have your opponents totally crushed, and because you are playing a short stack, ... More About: Strategy , Play , Made , Part , Trat
Short Stack Strategy - A Made Hand Game Theory Type Example Analysis - Part
2007-03-26 19:20:00 The last article discussed some of the theory behind playing made hands with a short stack. Let’s take a look at an example. Hand 1: Folded to you (20bb) with Tc Td in the CO. You raise to 3bb. Only the small blind calls. Flop (pot 6.7bb) 9c 6h 5d. The small blind checks. Here you have ... More About: Strategy , Analysis , Theory , Game , Made
SNG Strategy Guide Part 5 - Adjusting Push Ranges to Stack Sizes
2007-03-25 05:04:00 The last article talked about adjusting your pushing ranges based on your opponents’ calling tendencies. But there are other things one must consider in forming a winning SNG strategy. As you know, in a SNG you are constantly balancing the need to increase your chipstack with the goal of surviving to the end and grabbing at least some share of the prize money. Usually the two are related, but sometimes simply surviving can be so profitable that you should turn down the chance to gain chips in order to ensure doing so. Most of these types of situations come from one of your opponents having a stack that is very short. Consider the following hand. At a four handed table, UTG has 100 chips, button has 400, you are the small blind with 3000, and BB has 3500 chips with the blinds at 200/400. If the first two players fold, you are in a spot where with normal stacks you should move in with almost any two cards. But notice the situation here. UTG is about to bust out, and button will ... Sit and Go Strategy Guide - Getting Started in SNG Tournaments Part 4
More articles from this author:2007-03-20 13:48:00 In the previous article I discussed default pushing ranges on the bubble of a sit and go poker tournament. But of course, normally the situation is anything but “default”. SNG tournaments are at least somewhat similar to real poker, played mostly with real people, and real people have widely varying calling ranges. And usually the ...
