The first match if ICC Champions Trophy was between Sri Lanka and South Africa from group B. Sri Lanka showed superb display in rain-hit match and won it by 55 runs by Duckworth-Lewis method. South Africa winning the toss, invited Sri Lanka to bat first. After loosing Jayasuriya early, Dilshan and Sangakkara took Lankans to a flying start. Sri Lanka won the 1st ODI of the Compaq cup tri-series against New Zealand by 97 runs. It was a low-scoring match. Sri Lanka won the toss, batted first and posted a total of 216. The Sri Lankan inning which was once at 69/5 was boosted by the century by Samaraweera and half-century by Matthews.
