Claude Julien new Bruins coach
2007-06-19 04:28:00 The Bruins were saying earlier that they had the coaching search down to 4 guys. Well they have just named former Devils coach Claude Julie n as the bench boss. The announcement is expected tomorrow.Julien was relieved of duty with the Devils by Lou Lamoriello late last season even though the Devils were first in the Atlantic Division at the time, with a 49-24 record.Julien played most of his pro hockey in the AHL. His pro-semi-pro career lasted from 1977-1992. He coached the Hull Olympiques in 1996-97 (a 48-19 record). He coached the Hamilton Bulldogs for 3 years (2000-03) compiling a 98-77-19 record and was then promoted to coaching the Montreal Canadiens. He coached the Habs for 2.5 seasons accumulating a 72-62-17 record. He then coached the Devils.I think this is a good fit for Boston. I thought the B's defensive game looked terrible last season, and Julien, being a defenceman in his playing days, will steady the ship. Good luck in Beantown, Julien! Turn that franchise around!T ... Clarification on the John Muckler situation
2007-06-19 00:13:00 After watching the Senator's press conference, I can now see why John Muckler was released from his GM duties.1. Bryan Murray's contract had expired and Eugene Melnyk decided that NOW was the time to promote him and change paths. Melnyk mentioned signing Murray to a long-term deal as a GM at this point.2. There were conflicts of opinion. The unability of Muckler to bring Gary Roberts to Ottawa at the trade deadline was brought up and mentioned as a 'disappointment' by Melnyk. The owner said that was not a deciding factor. But really, I'm sure it played a role in it.Muckler's ripe old age of 73 was not a factor in the decision.Murray discussed that he would like to obtain some size, or bigger players at certain positions this summer. It's a business. For Melnyk to say that he had not thought of promoting Murray recently was a lie, and was said to not hurt Muckler's feelings. Flyers acquire 2 Predators
2007-06-18 21:52:00 According to TSN: Because of Nashville's uncertain ownership future and an expected tight budget in the coming year, sources tell TSN the Predator s arranged with the Flyers to give them exclusive negotiating rights to two coveted free agents - defenceman Kimmo Timonen and forward Scott Hartnell.Apparently, they have signed Hartnell to a 6-year, $25.2 million deal that pays him $4.2 million perseason. That seems a tad high for a guy who scored 22 goals and 39 points in 64 games last season. He must have a terrific upside. They have signed Kimmo Timmonen to a 6-year, $37.8 million contract, paying him $6.3 million per season. Wow the stock in defenceman is still insanely high. The Preds are so deep on defence that Kimmo was expedible anyway. The defenceman had 13 goals and 55 points in 80 games last season. The Flyers were sorely lacking an effective offensive defenceman last season.T Tags: Flyers acquire Hartnell Timmonen Predators More About: Acquire
Muckler fired, Murray promoted to GM
2007-06-18 19:27:00 It is finished. From TSN: The Ottawa Senators have fired general manager John Muckler and promoted head coach Bryan Murray to the position of general manager. Murray will remain as the Senators head coach on an interim basis until the team can fill the position. I don't know where the differences in direction or opinion were in Ottawa with Muckler. I've heard it was over the Hasek saga, or perhaps it was the inability to land Gary Roberts. Maybe it's Muckler's age, even though he said he was having 'a great time'. Who knows at this time. But I can say, from an outsider's point of view, is that this reeks. There had better be a good excuse for this change. It just boggles my brain that a GM gets turfed only weeks after his team that he assembled made it to the Cup Finals. Ah, but this happens over and over again to teams that lose in the Finals. It seems that management needs to change their team in order to get over the hump of losing in the final round. Then you know what... More About: Fired , Romo , Mote
Craig Berube talks about playing for Mike Keenan
2007-06-18 10:01:00 There was a great piece in the Calgary Herald on Sunday involving Craig Berube (who played for Keen an with the Flyers from 1986-88) talking about the persona of Mike Keenan. "You don't want to get on his bad side," says Craig Berube. "That's what I remember. If he didn't like you, you were in trouble. And it was hard to get back in the good books.""He'll come in there and shape it up as quickly as possible," he says. "If those guys want to play for him, they'll be a good team."What will Keenan expect from the Flames? "Play with balls," said Berube. "That's what he wants -- 'Show me something.' He almost likes --hmm, what's a good way of putting it? -- helter-skelter hockey, you know what I mean? Just go play. Skate. Hit. Get involved. Do something. It seems like he almost likes unstructured stuff. I'm not saying he doesn't have a system -- he does -- but he doesn't mind you going beyond that system."Berube also had a few stories to tell. "One day, we were going to have a...

What you may hear in Calgary next season
2007-06-18 00:22:00 After coaching NHL teams into the playoffs from 1985 all the way to 1996, Keenan has suffered playoff futility ever since after coaching the Canucks, Bruins and Panthers.I don't think that will be the case with the Flames. Wow, the majority of people are expecting a mass circus in Calgary this year, and perhaps even an early firing of Keenan as well. But let's give the strange, intense guy some credit. He is 6th all time in coaching wins. He is 5th all time in playoff wins. He has coached a team to the Finals 4 times. He has a Cup ring. He also has a temper, and a serious psychological outlook into the game. He analyses players. He pushes them. He accepts no excuses. He is not afraid to bench guys and make spontaneous decisions to turn the teams' fortunes around. That means that Jamie McLennan is going to play more between the pipes. That means that players who are not motivated are going to sit on the bench, Iginla included. Is that so bad? Accountability is a good thing, and sh... More About: Season , Hear , Gary , Seas
Black Hawks acquire Samsonov
2007-06-16 22:44:00 The Canadiens have rid themselves of one headache today, trading Sergei Samsonov to the Hawks in exchange for Jassen Cullimore and Tony Salmelainen. Cullimore is a large (6'5", 244 pounds), reliable stay-at-home type of defenceman who won a Stanley Cup with the Lightning. He had 7 points in 65 games last season. Salmelainen is a 26 year-old Fin who was drafted 41st overall in 1999 by the Oilers. He had 17 points in 57 games with the Hawks last season and 55 points in 53 games the previous year in Helsinki. A funny story about Salmelainen (from Wiki): Salmelainen also made headlines during the 2005-06 season when he was sent off during a game against HPK, and threw a trashcan down the corridor to the dressing rooms in anger. After narrowly missing goaltender Jan Lundell, the trashcan accidentally hit his team's bus driver, who was injured in the face. Salmelainen was interrogated by the police and received a two-game suspension. On a positive note, the 5'9", 185 pound Salmelainen ... More About: Black , Acquire , Sono , Lack
Dave Lewis gets the axe
2007-06-16 01:33:00 I had speculated this for a long time now. the Bruins, much like the Flames lacked identity and were inconsistent to no end. "Since the season has ended I have completed a thorough review of the team and the coaching staff, and I have determined that Dave Lewis and Marc Habscheid are not the proper fit for the Bruins at this time," GM Peter Chiarelli said, before adding: "I have a short list of candidates in mind." Lewis was spoon fed in Detroit as an assistant coach considering all of Detroit's success. "I probably took a number of things for granted that I shouldn't, thinking that the players understand," he said then. "Where I came from, it's just sort of natural, which it really isn't natural. It's a learned process, so that's where I have to improve." Lewis will receive another job somewhere in the organization. Lightning roll the dice on Hlavac / Habs sign 2
2007-06-15 22:08:00 Remember Jan Hlavac in Vancouver? 23 points in 55 games for the Canucks...terribly inconsistent. Now the Lightning are going to take a chance on the 31-year old. It's been 3 years since Hlavac has played in the NHL. He was averaging about 38 points in 48 games for Sparta Praha. He has 189 points in 356 career NHL games. His best NHL season was in 2000-2001 with the Rangers, where he scored 28 goals and 64 points in 79 games playing on a line with Radek Dvorak and Petr Nedved.Hlavac was involved in a couple of interesting deals. -August 20, 2001- He was traded by the New York Rangers, along with Kim Johnsson, Pavel Brendl and New York's 2003 3rd round draft choice, to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Eric Lindros. -December 17, 2001- was traded by the Philadelphia Flyers, along with Tampa Bay's 2002 3rd round draft choice, to the Vancouver Canucks in echange for Donald Brashear and Vancouver's 2002 6th round draft choice. -November 1, 2002- was traded by the Vancouver Canu... Iron Mike to Ignite Flames?
2007-06-14 08:20:00 TSN is reporting that Mike Keenan is on the verge of becoming the next coach of the Calgary Flames. Even though the Flames went 43-25-10 this past season under Jim Playfair, their lack of ability to win on the road embarassingly cost them the first round against the Red Wings.Keenan is more of a Sutter-type than Playfair I'm sure. He doesn't f**k around, and brings out the best in his players through psychological rants. He holds them accountable. What really had concerned me is how Playfair was not let go earlier, weeks prior to the end of the season when the Flames were playing subpar. I thought Sutter would have taken over the head coach job and fire Playfair before the playoffs had started.Keenan should bring some sense of identity to this Flames team that desperately needs it.Keenan will also bring controversy, no doubt about it.**UPDATE**Jim Playfair will probably remain with the Flames as an assistant coach.T Tags: Flames Mike Keenan new coach More About: Ignite , Ames , Iron , Lame
Signings / Trades / Rumors For Wednesday
2007-06-13 20:05:00 4:43 PMThe Lightning have acquired some size and hopefully scoring today. They traded a 2nd or 3rd round pick in the 2007 or 2008 Entry Draft to the Panthers for Chris Gratton. I think the time for Gratton to ever blossom into a consistent scoring threat ended a long time ago. He isn't much more than a 15 goal scorer on a 3rd line.3:36 PMFrom TSN: The Globe is reporting that Balsillie and the city (Hamilton) could announce the deal (to relocate the Predators to Hamilton) after a meeting on Wednesday . This agreement would mean that the area of Kitchener-Waterloo would be out of the running for the franchise as had earlier been speculated.1:40 PMThe Ducks have signed coach Randy Carlyle to a 1-year contract extension. The Canucks are in the middle of negotiations with Jeff Cowan. Steve Tambellini thought these negotiations would have been over by now, but there are some sticky points with dollars and length of terms. Sundin signs for 1 year / Updates
2007-06-12 19:51:00 And at a discount price to boot! Last season, Sundin, 36, made $6.3 million. This coming year he will take in $5.5 million. The Leafs were pushing for a longer-term deal but Sundin only wanted 1 year. The deal also includes a no-trade and no-movement clause. This puts Sundin in the driver's seat with his short-term future, as he can retire after the coming season or get signed by a different team next summer. (Like, a team that has a better chance at winning the Cup maybe?)But this gives John Ferguson Jr. $800,000 more bucks to play with. Is Mats a sweetheart or what?Hey, I am excited to see Sundin stay in Toronto. I have been a massive Sundin fan since he first entered the NHL with the Nordiques. The Red Wings have signed Chris Chelios to a 1-year deal worth $850,000 plus incentives. He doesn't get the extra $1 million if he needs a cane and wears diapers by February. Separated at Birth: Heatley
2007-06-07 23:14:00 There isn't many other ways to put the performance of Heatley in the Finals. Spezza had alluded to the line losing chemistry and not being able to get it back.I lost a bit of respect for Heatley when he complained after the game 2 loss that the Sens had lost a lot because the Ducks were clutching and grabbing like in 'old-time hockey' and that the ice was bad in Anaheim. Those were lame excuses. If he was referring to their checking of him it didn't matter. Heatley never persisted and broke through the checking. It wouldn't suprise me one bit if he blames a phantom injury on Thursday for his absenteeism in the Finals. I would have a hard time believing it.T Tags: Senators Dany+Heatley Sucks More About: Birth , Rate , Separated

All of the people that have not been watching these Finals lose the right to bitch about having to wait for the 2007/08 season to start later this summer. I just don't fully understand how so many people tune out at this time of year. They are not true hockey fans that's for sure!So how does the NHL find a way to increase the amount of viewers in the Finals?I say:-make the game more exciting again. This barrage of trips to the penalty boxes doesn't cut it. I don't feel like watching endless power plays anymore. Obstruction calls should be justified ONLY if the hook or grab visibly impedes a skater's progress.-bring back old-style hockey again! I want to see violence and fights in the Finals. Senators / Ducks Game 5 Preview
2007-06-06 20:09:00 The Sens appear to be confident heading into Game 5 in Anaheim tonight. (Ottawa Sun) But they probably just sound more confident. They have nothing to lose. It's now or never. A win in Anaheim could change their fortunes in this series. They could go back home down a game, win in Ottawa, and force this bad boy to a Game 7.But don't count on it. Gone is the Sens team that man-handled the Penguins, Devils and Sabres. Gone is that killer instinct and domination. Gone is the reliability of Ray Emery. He has been good, but has allowed too many softies. There are not enough things going right for the Sens right now. They look completely inconsistent out there and are breaking down. There are a lot of great things happening for the Duck s. When they play Carlyle's system to a T, they are nearly unstoppable. The Ducks once again forced a lot of turnovers from Ottawa in Game 4 and sped up the ice with odd man rushes. That kind of thing is going to bury the Senat or s, and really has buried th... Morricetown Canyon Flooding Before/After
2007-06-06 19:39:00 These images are of Moricetown Canyon, a tourist trap, about 30 minutes north of Smithers, where the Bulkley River squeezes through a narrow canyon. The top image is of the river at it's lowest, which is usually in the late summer. The lower pic was taken (the same spot) very recently.Unfortunately, the area we were sandbagging recently is becoming flooded regardless, as the river overflowed it's banks downstream of the dike and is working it's way back. The evacuations are well under way.But like I said before, it's the other towns that have mass populations living on river flood plains that are the real concern. Terrace BC has declared a state of emergency I hear. The Bulkley River heads NW to Terrace. The Fraser River (Prince George) heads south, where the problems will increasingly arise as this mass of water makes its way down to southwestern BC.Thanks to Beaner for the images. When I say that other areas have it worse than we do, here are a couple of pictures of the Skeena Ri... 2007-06-05 10:06:00 The Bulkley River has gone over it's banks in a few places in the Smithers area already. Our Par 3 golf course is now submerged.Today I left work early to help my cousins and many other volunteers sandbag the banks of the river to help prevent about 20 homes from getting washed out.The hot weather on the weekend followed by the wet system that moved in on Sunday have made problems worse and is only going to get worse yet. The peak of this flooding is estimated to be 2 weeks away still. We could very well see the worst flooding from this river in recorded history. Possibly. While my sympathy for people living on flood plains only goes so far, it is quite saddening to see the potential devastation here.Hopefully, the dikes that we put up today hold up. 2007-06-04 18:00:00 **UPDATE (11:04 AM) Ottawa Sun** Now the reports on McAmmond are that he is riding a bike today and skating. He is now questionable and is a game-time decision. Waiting For Flooding
2007-06-04 07:18:00 Communities and home-owners along the banks of the Fraser, Bulkey and Skeena Rivers in British Columbia are on evacuation warning. The earliest evacuations could begin on Tuesday in northern BC, as a low-pressure storm system moves over B.C from the southwest, probably dumping large amounts of rain.(pictured).The 33 degree celsius-plus weather has already raised the rivers by several feet this weekend, as there is still a lot of snow in the many mountain ranges along Western BC. Way too much snow.If the storm system brings a lot of rain and the temperatures rise again later in the week, we could see the biggest flooding in this area in years. The river levels are forecasted to be the highest since 1972.For now, even in my hometown of Smithers, residents flock to the rivers occasionally to check the levels and watch the water come up. Honestly, our dark, curious sides actually want to see nature inflict it's wrath. Hell, I love natural disasters even if it is at the expense of other... Pronger gets a one game suspension
More articles from this author:2007-06-03 21:02:00 And I'm sure most people will be saying: "ONLY 1 GAME??!!" And that question may or may not be justified. Pron ger struck Dean McAmmond in the head with an elbow last night as McAmmond was skating by him. An elbow that "Macho Man" Randy Savage would have been proud of. CBC cameras had a closeup of McAmmond's face, and he was clearly dazed, but not knocked out. "This one took a lot of thought," Colin Campbell, the NHL's executive vice-president and director of hockey operations, said at a news conference. "It wasn't an easy one. It didn't jump out at us right away." Randy Carlyle must be breathing a sigh of relief: "We accept the league's decision," said Carlyle. "We feel that the player did not attempt to hurt Dean McAmmond. "We have to live by the league's decision." I'm not sure how he can possibly think that Prong er wasn't trying to hurt him.
