Canadian Legends defeat Team Task Force
2007-05-04 21:01:00
Lord Stanley has been in Afghanistan for the past few days as has been several Canadian hockey legends including the likes of Mark Napier, Tiger Williams, and Bob Probert. Today the Legends played a ball hockey game against a group of Canadian soldiers. They called themselves Team Task Force . The final score was 7-1. They probably took it easy on them! Game 5 : Ducks 2 Canucks 1 (2 OT) Sober Update
2007-05-04 18:56:00
Apologies for not finishing the previous post last night, but naturally, I was too drunk to use a keyboard. It was a good thing to be gooned during the 3rd period and overtimes as it numbed the pain considerably. I was getting cocky during the extra periods though, screaming "Shades of Hasek! Shades of Hasek!" thinking that with Luongo stopping so many shots the Canucks were going pull off one of the greatest upsets of all time like Hasek did in the Sabres' run in 1999.But it was not to be, and Luongo's gripe and arm-waving over the hit on Janen in the 2nd overtime was his undoing, as he missed a Scott Niedermayer shot from the point in the process. It was surreal. Luongo layed on his face in dismay after the puck went into the net. I felt temporary anger towards him for the blunder, but almost immediately realized that he had already faced 58 shots and was the only reason that this was still a game. There isn't much to say about the rest of the team's effort. Getting outshot 63-2...

1st PeriodPathetic. Luongo is keeping the Canucks in this one. The Duck s outshot Vancouver 17-6 in the 1st period, as the Nucks look flat and almost uninterested. 2 power plays for Vancouver and they showed a lack of intensity. I didn't see a lot of speed, chemistry, or anything else good from Vancouver in Period 1. That is inexcusable in a game that you have to win.Expect Vigneault to rip into these guys during the intermission and a better effort in the 2nd period.2nd PeriodNevermind. The Ducks score seconds into the 2nd. Fuck. Sammi Pahlsson. Sleek must be beaming.I can't handle this in a sober state. I'm getting hammered starting right now!!3rd PeriodThis is really hard to stomach. We are being outshot 42-14 minutes into the 3rd. Are the Canucks already defeated in their minds in this game? It appears that way. I just can't believe it's only 1-0 when we are being outplayed and outshot that badly. Luongo is god, ladies and gents. And this god is being hung out to dry tonigh...

I usually try to keep my personal life out of this site and stick to hockey. But when my personal life has something to do with hockey I'll make an exception.Since I live in a small (but terrific) town of about 5500 people, the shopping is limited. So myself, my wife and my sister drove 4 hours east today to the City of Prince George to purchase some goods. I got some decent stuff.- a 42" widescreen TV- a high definition satellite receiver- bass drum double kicker pedals so I can thrash out on my drum set- a year supply of Zakk Wylde Boomer guitar strings (crunch!)- a Winnipeg Jets t-shirt (pictured)- the 1st season of the Muppet Show on DVD (I'm a retro junky)- (almost) most importantly, I bought my first-ever piece of Canucks merchandise: a Canucks stick-in-rink shirt. The only reason I got that is because I couldn't find a Roberto Luongo home stick-in-rink jersey. They were out-of-stock of Canucks jerseys at Jersey City. Yeah, Canuck fever is running wild in B.C. Guess I'll h...

Game 4: Ducks 3 Canucks 2 (OT)
2007-05-02 07:55:00
I am almost at a loss for words. Everything was going so well for the Canucks through 2 periods. They had a 2-0 lead, they killed penalties effectively, Luongo was solid, they looked in control. But once the Duck s started pressing harder in the 3rd, the Canucks started scrambling a bit and losing their composure. A screened-shot goal by Pronger 3:58 into the 3rd only added to the pressure. The Ducks kept their momentum and started to get some breaks. Selanne's tying goal at 14:18 was mostly the result of Salo losing his stick at the blueline moments earlier. Teemu put the puck through Salo's legs and past Luongo. A rebound goal. From that point you had to wonder just when the Ducks would score the winning goal, as the Canucks looked rattled, coughing the puck up in their own zone and not playing like they had earlier in the game. That winning goal came at 2:07 of the 1st OT: an unlucky bounce off a player in front of the net from a Scott Niedermayer point shot, and Travis Moen, of ...

I don't know what inspires me to make such Photoshops sometimes. An overactive imagination on occasion I suppose.**Update (12:00 PM): From The Vancouver Province: Jeff Cowan was not at practice and may not play tonight. Apparently he is 'banged up.' As well, Kevin Bieksa's problems have alleviated, and he could be available tonight.**Update (11:55 AM): From The Province- Goaltenders Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks and centre Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins are the finalists for the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player. Power play theories mean what? The Canucks' power play woes are front and center now, unlike in the Dallas series. It is so easy to pick on a team's lousy power play when they are behind in a series. But the 'you can't win a series with a sub-par power play' theory has too many holes in it. The Canucks were 3-for-38 against the Stars, and Dallas was 5-for-36 with the man advantage....

What the hell is she thinking?
2007-05-01 01:10:00
I get a kick out of this picture because of the woman in the background with a sign that says: "Luongo is Dreamy." Keep holding it up! I don't think he can see it! Oh, you're just trying to get on TV.....Hey lady, how about you quit distracting him! If he gets too confident, he starts playing the puck more often....oh shit...too late...1-0 Ducks. Bitch! Between that lady, and Beetlejuice with the "Taylor Pyatt Has Beautiful Eyes" sign, I think some Vancouver fans need to get their head out of Seventeen Magazine and create signs that actually relate more to hockey, like:"Hey Luongo, let's play a game. First person to play the puck gets their head shaved."or"Hey Louie, close your legs"or"Hey Pyatt, if your shot looked as good as your eyes do, we wouldn't be 1-for-20 on the powerplay in this series."or"Hey Pyatt, pretend the net is a mascara stand and go stand in front of it!"OK, I'm kidding around. I'm done now. Unless somebody has something to add to that.Want to read something...

Heard around the League
2007-04-30 22:07:00
"It's important to stay calm," Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere said. "We've faced this kind of situation before in the season where the other team might have dominated the first period. We have a lot of experience in this dressing room. There's no need to panic." The most experienced Ducks are Selanne, both Niedermayers, and Chris Pronger. Those 4 players have played a combined 436 playoff games (Scott Niedermayer-170 games, Chris Pronger-117 games, Rob Niedermayer-76 games, and Selanne-73 games.)The most playoff-experienced Canucks are: Trevor Linden-122 games, Bryan Smolinski-109 games, Sami Salo-53 games, and Brendan Morrison-51 games, for a combined total of 335 games."It's a tough goal to give up right off the bat," Roberto Luongo said about his folly in the first period of Game 3. "I'll take the blame for that one." Yeah. And please don't ever do that again in the post season!"I think that as much as everyone has made them out to be the big bad mighty Ducks, I th...

Waiting For Stanley Pool Standings
2007-04-30 18:55:00
The Waiting For Stanley Pool has been a close race so far. SirRated had the lead for most of Round 1 but lost 7 players after the initial round. 1972 Summit Series is actually Joe Pelletier. I need the Devils to be eliminated in order to catch that guy.I got 3 words for you: BANK ON IT!!Remember, I am paying the winner of this pool $50. If you are reading this and are a part of the pool and actually have a chance at winning it, you will have to send me your address so I can send you a cheque! Odds are, you won't beat me anyways, and I'll spend my own $50 on a full frontal massage. :)

Game 3: Ducks 3 Canucks 2
2007-04-30 07:18:00
Despite the positives that Markus Naslund scored again, and it was on the powerplay, where Vancouver has been atrocious, it really didn't matter at the end of the night. This is because the Duck s scored twice on their 5 chances with the man-advantage. The Canucks were only 1-for-8. Frustrating. Vancouver played a disciplined game for the most part, and the Ducks did not, and we still lost. Luongo, you twit!!!I almost hate to say it, but Roberto Luongo did not bring his A-game tonight. The Canucks had all the shots and momentum in the early stages of the game, but Luongo coughed the puck up behind the net right onto the stick of Corey Perry, who fed the puck the Dustin Penner, who put it into the open net. It was a gaff of Ty Conklin proportions, and the Ducks' first shot on net. At least the Canucks hung in there after that, and still managed to outshoot Anaheim to tie it late in the 1st (Naslund) and outshoot the Ducks 13-2 in that frame. But how the f*ck can you feel good about ...

An update on some injured Canucks ' status found at Canada.com: Defenceman Willie Mitchell and Rory Fitzpatrick didn’t skate Saturday.Mitchell missed the final 12 minutes of the first period Friday after taking a hip check from Francois Beauchemin. Mitchell did return and finished the game.Vigneault said he expected Mitchell to play Sunday but Fitzpatrick had the flu.The Canucks are already without defenceman Kevin Bieksa and Sami Salo, who are out with injuries.Bieksa skated by himself Saturday but moved like he had eggs in his pockets.Vigneault doubted Bieksa would be ready, but said Salo would be a game-time decision. The Canucks have called up Yannick Tremblay from the AHL Manitoba Moose.Well we sure can't really afford to lose any more defencemen. I haven't been overly impressed with Tremblay this year. Hopefully Salo and Fitzpatrick play so we avoid seeing Tremblay out there. This is a lousy time for the flu bug isn't it?Nonis speaks with the NHLDave Nonis and Alain Vigne...

Prince William Mitchell
2007-04-29 04:12:00
In my opinion, Will ie Mitchell could very well be the unsung hero of the Canucks this season, and especially in the post season. The 6'3" 205 pounder has been a steady, tough, and intelligent force for the Canucks. He is a leader. Many times on camera, you can see him hollering instructions to his mates. He is an avid communicator. The Port McNeill, B.C. native seems to be throughly enjoying his time in Vancouver, and also seems to be playing the best hockey of his career. So much of what Mitchell does for this team is usually hidden because he is not a flashy player. He is not an offensive defenceman. He has 10 goals and 62 assists in 384 career regular season games. He has 1 goal and 4 assists in 32 career playoff games. But Mitchell will back his goaltender at all costs, as we've especially seen him do this post season, clearing the puck from the goal line more than once.Mitchell has been great playing against opponent's top lines all season long. It's crazy to think that merely...

Canucks 2 Ducks 1 (2 OT)
2007-04-28 09:06:00
What a contrast from Game 1! The Canucks sustained pressure on the Duck s tonight for a lot longer than they did in the first game. The much-maligned Markus Naslund scored a Crosby-like goal on Giguere after stripping the puck from gap-toothed Pronger at 6:30 of the 2nd period, finally giving the Canucks something on the scoreboard to reward them for their efforts.About 5 minutes later the Nucks got caught, and Selanne charged in alone on Luongo, who stoned him. Unfortunately, Travis Moen cleaned up the garbage and scored on the rebound because no one took him out. That was a deflating goal to say the least. It seemed from that point all the way until the 2nd OT, the Ducks had better chances and more momentum. The Canucks hung in there and got some breaks, like the shot off the post moments after the Moen goal. From the 3rd period on, the Canucks took 4 penalties to the Ducks' 1. That didn't help the momentum factor at all. A lot of these calls were fucking LAME. The refereeing is ...
Canucks/Ducks Game 2 Preview
2007-04-27 09:08:00
It's 26 hours since the end of game 1 and I still feel a bit angered and uneasy about the Canucks ' 5-1 loss to the Duck s. The media and many fans are placing the lob-sided loss on the absences of Bieksa and Salo and also the fact that the Canucks were emotionally tired and spent after the Game 7 win. They were tired. Don Cherry called Game 1 in Anaheim a 'no brainer' victory because of the emotional excuse. Pat Quinn said on Hockey Night in Canada tonight that the Canucks 'are not done yet.' (By the way, it was great listening to Quinn's analysis and theories during his guest appearances with Ron and Don.)Perhaps I am a little more pessimistic. I still see a wasted opportunity after blowing a 1-0 lead, ceasing skating, taking dumb penalties, and not converting on chances. This isn't the regular season anymore. There is not much room for poor performance, nor should there be excuses made. We are playing a team that is, on paper, in most categories dominant and superior to us. ...

Kovalev Crying Again / Other NHL News
2007-04-26 19:57:00
From Sportsnet: Contrary to Kovalev's mid-season rant about francophone favoritism and the Montreal media, the latest gripe is with the hockey club itself. The 13-year NHL veteran felt abandoned at times during the year, specifically when he was relegated to fourth line duties."If you (media) are going to keep embarrassing me here, there's no reason for me to stay because I don't want to ruin my reputation and ruin my career," he said in March. "Sometimes you wonder why anyone would want to be a good player when things like that happen. What????!!! Sounds like Kovalev is looking for a one-way ticket out of Montreal. Obviously he wants to be treated like Paris Hilton wherever he goes, but his lack of offensive output warranted his treatment by the Habs' coaching staff. Personally I think this moment ruined his reputation. By the way, that interview was with a Russian newspaper. It's funny how Russian players (mostly, it seems) can run their mouth back in the Motherland and think ...

Game 1: Ducks 5 Canucks 1

It took the Duck s about 10 minutes to come out of their slumber from an extended lay-off between series. In the first 10 minutes Jeff Cowan scored to put the Canucks up 1-0 while the Ducks coughed the puck up and looked flat. But Vancouver got a good look at how good Anaheim's powerplay was when they took their first penalty- too many men- and Andy McDonald scored his first of 3 goals on the night at 9:24.It was at that point that the Ducks took over the game. Their speed and skill game caught the Canucks off guard. Suddenly, the Canucks were pinching too deep and getting caught, and not taking their defensive assignments. It resulted in 2 more first period goals: a quick backhander by Selanne, who went through Sopel, and a breakaway goal by McDonald..again.From the 2nd period on, the Ducks outshot the Canucks 28-18 scored 2 more goals in the 3rd and really shut them down. The 2 powerplay goals Vancouver scored in Game 7 against the Stars are all but a faded memory. They were 0-for-...

Haha, a little stab at Earl Sleek's cartoon-skills. For me: mostly stolen images and a bit of imagination. Sleek does the real thing, and it's funny as hell. But let's get down to business. For the most part, the Canucks -Stars series was quite similar to what happened between those 2 team during the regular season. We don't want that to be the case against the Duck s. Here are some stats for your viewing pleasure.Breaking down the regular season matchups-The Canucks won 1 game out of 4 against the Ducks this season.-They were outscored 14-6 in those games. (The 6-0 loss in November skews that stat.)-They were out shot 121 to 101.-The Canucks were shorthanded 25 times. The Ducks 18.-The Canucks' PP went 2-for-25. The Ducks: 4-for-18.-The Ducks won 59% of the face offs. Round 2 Predictions
2007-04-25 02:07:00
After the first round I am looking like a real smartass. I only got the Flames-Wings series wrong. That was a shot-in-the-dark prediction anyway. Here is how I measure up to the 'experts' on the TSN Panel.Dreger: 8 right out of 8Zanstorm: 7/8Duthie: 7/8McKenzie: 7/8Pang: 7/8Roenick: 5/8Maggie the Monkey: 4/8Names pulled out of my hat: 4/8On to Round 2Canucks vs DucksIt doesn't really concern me that the Ducks won the regular season series. What concerns me is the Ducks made it to the Semi-finals last season, dropped Lupul and added Pronger in the summer. That is an improvement. Don't get me wrong, I am cheering for the Canucks. But prior to Round 1, I picked a Ducks/Sharks Semi-final this year. I will stand by that and pray I'm wrong for the sake of Vancouver.Ducks in 6.Sharks vs Red WingsThe fact that it took the Wings 6 games to beat the Flames is surprising, considering the lackluster play of the Flames. thank Kipper for that. Canucks Injuries / Edler Recalled/Naslund Calls Nucks Underdogs **UPDATED**
2007-04-25 00:26:00
From TSN:Defenceman Sami Salo is probable for Game 1 (flu and back) and Kevin Bieksa says he is questionable (undisclosed). Coach Alain Vigneault said both blueliners will play against Anaheim. But Vigneault doesn't specify which game Bieksa will be back. And probable isn't 100% for Salo. This sucks. The Canucks are taking no chances, as they called up Alex Edler today. Edler did score a goal against the Ducks this season in a 2-1 loss November 30th. I guess we could expect to see Rory Fitzpatrick play first, and Edler second in the absenses of Salo and/or Bieksa.**UPDATE**From Sportsnet: One question for the Canucks is the health of defenceman Kevin Bieksa. He missed parts of Game 6 and the final two-and-a-half minutes of Game 7 with what the team is calling a flu."I'm not feeling good and had some blood work done and I'm waiting for the results," Bieksa said. "I don't exactly know what it is, but I'm trying to find out."The Canucks say Bieksa will play but the defenceman isn...

Dallas in Mourning
2007-04-24 20:57:00
From the Star Telegram: Each of the Stars' players skating slowly over to Turco as he stood dejectedly in front of the net when it was over. Affectionately, virtually every one of his teammates reached out, put a gloved hand on his helmet, and touched their forehead to his, standing like that for several seconds. As if that wasn't already enough to put a lump in the throat, several of the Canucks embraced Turco as the two teams met in that most sportsmanlike of hockey traditions, the post-series handshake line. Finally, there was only Turco and his Vancouver counterpart, Roberto Luongo, standing together at center ice. Luongo reached out and pulled Turco close with a hug and sold out GM Place roared its approval. They were the indisputable heroes of their series. Neither deserved to lose. That it will be Turco going home does not change the fact that he rescued his reputation and perhaps his career with his performance in this playoff series. No longer do the Stars have to wonder if ...

Canucks 4 Falling Stars 1
2007-04-24 10:34:00
When Joel Lundqvist scored with a beauty wrist shot at 16:32 of the 1st to put the Star s up 1-0, my heart sank, because I knew that Dallas played superb being up a goal. Right after that goal, the Stars went into their defensive mode and the Canucks looked defeated. But I don't know what Vigneault told these guys in the 1st intermission, because as soon as the puck dropped in the 2nd period, the Canucks were alive, and never really looked back. To compliment their renewed vigor, they received breaks, power plays, and and power play goals of all things. The Stars just couldn't handle the Canuck onslaught and had that look in their eyes that we did in Games 5 and 6. It was a beautiful sight.Let me just get something out of the way. The refs were atrocious. That was not a way to ref a Game 7 for fuck's sakes. 3:18 into the 2nd period these bastards decided to make 15 calls (most of them lame) for the rest of the game: 5 against Vancouver and 10 against Dallas. I wouldn't blame the S...

Ryan Smyth has a lot of decisions to make prior to July 1. From Newsday: Asked if he wants to wait until July 1 to field offers from other teams or if he would consider signing earlier with the Islanders, Smyth shook his head at the thought of the sizable offer he's likely to receive and said, "Well, I'm sure they're not going to make it easy."To say no, he meant."I want to explore this next couple of weeks with my family and my agent. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I came from a place where I obviously loved to play in Edmonton, and I came to another historical team that sees the Cup and knows [what it's like to win]. Even those ex-players are still around, so it's nice to see that they keep pulling for the team. It's not going to be an easy decision. That's for sure."Smyth said he expects to talk with general manager Garth Snow and coach Ted Nolan about the direction of the franchise. They spent yesterday conducting exit interviews and are scheduled to meet with th...

If you weren't a drinker before, maybe you should become one now. In fact, become a full-fledged alcoholic for one night (drink responsibly-haha). Tonight's finale is going to bring about more stress and anxiety than an Alec Baldwin phone call to his kid.The Star s are riding high after winning 2 in a row to tie the series. After Game 6 the Canucks look like a heavyweight champion boxer up against the ropes getting fed by a suprising challenger. Thankfully, the fucking bell just sounded to end the round. Now the Canucks are going to have to look deep within themselves to see if they can shake off this Stars attack and put the current inability to close this series and a lousy Game 6 out of their minds. All I am asking for is composure, patience, and desire. No more mindless penalties, play their system that has worked all year, and match/exceed the Stars' work ethic. The rest comes down to breaks that are created by such ethics.Markus Naslund- prove you are worthy of wearing the "C" ...

Game 6: Flames 1 Red Wings 2 (2 OT)
2007-04-23 03:15:00
What the hell. Since I have my laptop and the Flames/Wing s game in front of me, I may as well do a live period-by-period report about it. I don't really like the Flames at all, but I am hoping that somehow they can force this series to 7 games and knock the piece of dung Red Wings out of the playoffs. I do, after all, hate Detroit, and don't mind seeing any or all of the Canadian teams advance. As long as it's not at the Canucks' expense!1st Period-All this talk about "Ooo, Hasek hasn't played back-to-back games, blah blah." Give me a break. It means absolutely nothing!-The team that scores first in this series has won every game.-As usual, the Flames come out firing at home and are physically dominant. Regardless, the Wings are keeping their composure, and badly outshooting the Flames.-Over half way through the 1st , Giordano took a Matthieu Schnieder slapper in the head. Canucks/Stars Post Game Thoughts
2007-04-22 20:30:00
"We'll find out if momentum matters," said Marty Turco, who didn't have a playoff shutout before this series. "We've frustrated them a little bit. Game 7 will be the biggest challenge."Can you believe it? It was a mere 4 days ago that we were saying that about them."If it weren't for Roberto, it would have been 7-0. It was not a good game on our part to say the least," Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said. "As far as I'm concerned there was one team on the ice. It was the Dallas Star s . They outworked us, outhustled us. ... If we bring this type of game or efficiency on the ice. I don't like our chances.".Bank on the Canucks coming out hard on Monday. If they can play hard and stay out of the fucking penalty box, we'll be ok. A powerplay goal for Vancouver at a key time would be nice as well."That just comes down to mindset," Brendan Morrison said, "getting bodies willing to pay the price, take some punishment, engaging in some battles. That's obviously what we're going to hav...

Game 6: Stars 2 Canucks 0
2007-04-22 12:22:00
Well, this loss didn't hurt as much as the Game 5 loss in OT. The biggest reason for me personally is because the Canucks were never really in this one. Dallas maintained their momentum in this series by beating the Canucks physically, offensively and defensively. They moved the puck well where the Canucks didn't. They forechecked hard and kept the Canucks in their own zone for most of the night. Vancouver stabbed themselves in the foot early in the game by taking 2 consecutive penalties, allowing Dallas to score a PP goal (Modano) with the 2-man advantage. Mattias Ohlund coughed the puck up in the 3rd leading to a Jeff Halpern killer goal.Chalk it up as an off night for Vancouver. An off-night that may cost them the series. For now, we can console ourselves with the fact that we still have home-ice advantage, and that you KNOW the Canucks will come out better in Game 7. They have to. As well, there is a small chance that both Sergei Zubov and Brendan Morrow may not play in Game 7...

Just as a side note- the Flames-Wings game is a beauty. The game was close until Dan Cleary, the Newfie wonder, scores the first goal on the penalty shot in the 2nd. Then the Flames, like they've been doing all series long on the road, completely unravelled and fell apart at the seams. It's now 2-0 Wings.Poor Cleary caught an edge by the Wings bench, fell awkwardly head-first into the boards. He's alright. One thing is for sure: Miikka Kiprusoff is playing super, and his mates are not bailing him out at all.Great. Chris Chelios scores his first goal of the year. 3-0 Wings.
