In Theo We Trust
2007-02-24 16:28:06
With a long history of bad GM's in Boston comes a certain reluctance to trust anyone that has held the position for any extended period of time. While every good move is celebrated by the fans and the intense followers, every bad move is placed in a file that is pulled out and looked over every time the ship begins to stray off it's course. Recently, our GM has come under fire for moves he has made in the past two off-seasons that have not worked out according to plan. Players like Edgar Renteria, Coco Crisp, Josh Beckett, and Wily Mo Pena have been first year "busts" in the eyes of the Fenway Faithful, while players like Johnny Damon, Pedro Martinez, and Orlando Cabrera were allowed to sign with other teams despite the pleading fans begging for the FO to bring them back. We all know that Theo Epstein was the first GM to bring us a Championship in 86 years, but the often used slogan in Boston is "what have you done for me lately?" Before we determine what Theo's ul...

The History of Jay Cutler, Part 1
2007-02-24 16:28:06
Start number one for Jay Cutler is in the books, and the reviews are not stellar.  Why should they be?  Cutler gave the Mile High Maniacs very little to cheer for in Sunday night's 23-20 loss against Seattle.  It was a far cry from Cutler's successful preseason campaign, which is probably why we all wanted him to take over in the first place.  Of course, anyone who knows football can tell you that the defense played in exhibitions is nothing near the level that Cutler saw last night.  We didn't get what we hoped, but we did get what we should have expected. Not that the rest of the team gave much reason to feel good about themselves either.  Sure, the defense was rock solid for much of the game, keeping Shaun Alexander in check and holding Matt Hasselbeck to a sub-par stat line.  However, it's hard to win with a rookie quarterback when old reliable Rod Smith fumbles away a catch, and Brian Clark muffs a kick return and gets creamed by...the kic...

Darrent Williams, 1982-2007
2007-02-24 16:28:06
One of my New Year's resolutions was to start making regular posts on our silly little site.  When I woke up on New Year's Day, I knew I'd have to go ahead and do the toughest one of the year just one day into it. As we've all heard by now, Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Will iams was shot and killed outside a nightclub early Monday morning.  Williams had just wrapped up his second season in the NFL hours before.  From what I read of Darrent, he was a decent human being.  Very respectful and laid-back, he was a guy the other fellas in the locker room wanted there.  All I know about it him is what he's done on the field.  He had one of the toughest jobs in football; play the corner on the other side of Champ Bailey.  Darrent got picked on relentlessly over the past two seasons, because nobody wants to throw to Champ's side.  He was thrown into the starting lineup as a rookie last season, and showed quite a bit of impro...

NBA All-Star Weekend. It's...Not That Bad
2007-02-24 16:28:06
I had no intention of watching Saturday night's All-Star festivities in Vegas. I lost interest in the dunk contest about 10-15 years ago, and if I was around I might catch a 3-Point contest if nothing else was on. After not being able to find enough heads for poker, two of my friends and I decided to bet on the events to make the night interesting. The first event was the...shooting thing with an NBA guy, a girl and someone you'd expect to see on Pros vs. Joes (if anyone would want to watch it). One friend was all about the Bulls because of Pippen. The other took the LA team. Since I wanted to pick differently, I chose the Detroit team by default. Now, I hate Bill Laimbeer. He was a whiny little bitch his entire career and a first-grade cheap shot artist. Plus, my dad loved him. But once I saw his gut and gray hair, I knew I had to pick him. Lucky for me, the Chicago players looked as smart as Chicago fans and forgot how to follow the rules. I'll take a win any way I can get it.Th...

ESPN's Remorse
2007-02-24 16:28:06
Football fans everywhere received some great news over the weekend. We will no longer have to sit through Michael Irvin on Sunday NFL Countdown. Or ESPN Monday Countdown. Or all the filler work he does on Sportscenter and ESPN radio. Of course, the ESPN-Irvin fiasco could be directly responsible for him getting elected to the hall. Somebody please explain to me why Michael Irvin is more deserving of enshrinement than Art Monk? I'll give you the quick stats, courtesy of pro-football-reference.com. Michael Irvin: Among the league's all-time top 50Receptions:20tReceiving yards:14Receiving TDs:37tYards from scrimmage:39 Art Monk Among the league's all-time top 50Receptions:6Receiving yards:11Receiving TDs:30tYards from scrimmage:32 Monk blows him away. Granted Irvin's career was cut short, but there's no way you can convince me Irvin deserved enshrinement over Monk. It's not like you can hold the Super Bowl titles over him either, because he won one each with Doug Williams and Mar...

The Daytona 500 was held over the weekend. Experts are still trying to figure out why. This is hopefully the last post I'll ever do on NASCAR. First of all, I was incredibly pissed when I had last Monday off and decided I'd watch Around the Horn and PTI for once, only to find out they were taken off the air for a week for...NASCAR Now??? Does NASCAR really need its own daily show? Did people actually watch that shit at 5PM? I guess it was an important event for rednecks everywhere, because I kept hearing the phrase "Super Bowl of NASCAR" every time the Daytona was mentioned on SportsCenter (and each time I promptly changed the channel). Umm, Super Bowl of NASCAR? That's what you're going with? The only event worth watching during your season is the first race eh? Not opening day, nor NASCAR kick-off weekend...nope, you're going with Super Bowl. Sure thing. So I guess that Harvick guy is the MVP and there's no need for the rest of the season to take place. If only fans of real ...

In the wake of Dennis Johnson's death, I thought I'd share a quick story.  Before the current days of pro sports players making professional appearances, and charging outrageous fees for their signature and merchandise to scribble on, public signings were quite simpler.  Athletes would go nearly anywhere if the venue would put up the money.  Dennis Johnson was one of those guys.  He came to an auto dealership in my area (I think it was in West Springfield...it's not really that important) when I was about 7 or 8 years old.  My father, great man that he is, took me to meet D.J. and get an autograph.  This was back when the Celtics ruled the Massachusetts sports landscape (I know that's difficult for you youngins to believe, but it's true).  When we showed up, it was apparent that word spread quickly.  We waited in line for what seemed like 1,000 hours, just waiting for our moment with D.J.  My dad started getting worried, because it...

Lucchino Interview at Boston Globe
2007-02-24 16:28:06
Larry returned from making friends in Japan and was kind enough to get in contact with the Boston Globe and offer some insights on some of the big topics. Daisuke Matsuzaka: "Our interest is obviously sincere. There is a fallacious assumption that this is a defensive maneuver. I tried to squash that while I was in Japan. We have until Dec. 14. Knowing the way the agent [Scott Boras] works, it will probably happen on the night of the 14th." Nice to have that re-confirmed. I figured all along that it was just good media to say that the Red Sox did it as a way to block the New York Yankees. I'm hoping the deal gets done. Is it the 14th yet? Possibly signing free agent J.D. Drew: "I'm not going to have any comment on [negative media impressions of Drew]. It would be grotesquely unfair of the media to say that before a new player ever came to town. The last time I remember that happening was for a player named David Ortiz." I've officially changed my tune on the JD Drew s...

Another Boston Icon is gone
2007-02-24 16:28:06
Trot Nixon was not offered arbitration by the Boston Red Sox tonight. Trot, along with Doug Mirabelli, Gabe Kapler, and Mark Loretta were all declined arbitration. It is unlikely that Nixon will resign with Boston unless another team is unwilling to give him a starting position. Part of me hopes he will start somewhere, but a bigger part of me hopes that the original Dirt Dog comes back for a platoon role of some sort. The clubhouse will never be the same without him. Thanks for all the memories Trot! Some quotes taken from ThinkExist.com from Nixon over the years,       ?We feed off our fans all the time, whether it's coming in late from a road trip, or in the middle of a long homestand. We always feed off our fans. I think they know that. They're a very important part of the way we play. Obviously, we have to go out on the field and get the job done, but they're always a huge part of us winning ballgames.?    ...

An Interesting Article
2007-02-24 16:28:06
Here's some segments from an interesting article on JD Drew taken from the LA Times, We certainly had our differences. We talked for two years about him disappearing before games and hiding from the media glare that comes with being paid like a big star. I told him I thought he lacked passion and he said it was a long season and it was more important to pace his emotions. When he did so, General Manager Ned Colletti sounded wounded, while Times columnist Bill Plaschke and most Dodgers fans seemed pleased.Colletti went on a conference call with the media and said, "I know J.D. is a spiritual guy and a man of his word. I guess he changed his word." It was Drew's prerogative to change his mind, the Dodgers giving him that power when they signed him to a contract two years ago with an escape clause. And yet Colletti chose to attack his character with it. Some people get married and promise to be with their partner all their life, and statistics suggest a number of people change their...

Report: Red Sox on the verge of landing Drew
2007-02-24 16:28:06
Projo.com is reporting that Theo and Boras are putting the finishing touches on a contract for JD Drew. However, once done, the deal will not be official until after December 1, which is Friday, because the Red Sox do not want to forfeit any draft picks for next year. The deal is being outlined as follows, Drew stands ready to sign a four-year contract, with the two sides still at work on a fifth year that would offer the Red Sox some protection with the injury-prone Drew. It's unknown whether the fifth year will be in the form of a vesting option -- under which Drew could guarantee the final year by reaching minimum numbers of games played and at-bats recorded -- or a straight team option. It's expected that the contract will pay Drew approximately $14 million to $15 million per season, which could bring the total value of the deal to as much as $75 million. I realize now that if Manny is traded away, there will still have to be a player inserted between Ortiz and Drew in the li...

Who you calling Nancy?
2007-02-24 16:28:06
seems like just yesterday... There are twenty nine other teams besides the Red Sox in MLB, and JD Drew is going to wish he had signed with one of them before his first season with Boston is over. Assuming that the Red Sox do sign him in the next week or so, JD will be coming to a foreign land filled with restless natives. If Manny Ramirez is to be traded and JD Drew is to be signed AND the Red Sox do not go out and acquire another bat via trade, then Mr. Drew is going to be playing in a hostile environment for many years to come. There is no other team in baseball that has a fanbase as feverishly hungry about their team as do the Boston Red Sox. I would say that Yankees fans are the same way, but it would take me an entirely new post just to state my reasons as to why I think otherwise. I'll save that for another day. Anyways. With the mere mention at the beginning of the free agent season that the Red Sox were interested in signing Drew, legions of fans swarmed the...

Coming to America

According to Rotoworld, the Red Sox are expected to announce the signing of the Japanese LOOGY Hideki Okajima to what figures to be a two year deal. At least Matsuzaka will have someone familiar to talk to in the clubhouse. On another note, the players on the Nippon Ham Fighters are sad to see him go. He was one of the best. NO-body fought ham like he did. Show him a....ok, I'll stop now. UPDATE: The Herald has more.

Trade Speculation: Peavy for Manny
2007-02-24 16:28:06
Gordan Edes released an article today citing Padres ace Jake Peavy as Theo Epstein's prime target to be involved in a deal for Mann y Ramirez. Scott Linebrink and Adrian Gonzalez are also names said to be involved in the potential mega-deal. The San Diego Padres have always seemed to be just a bloop and a blast away from advancing past the first round in the playoffs. While many of bloops have come in the past few years, they have rarely, if ever, been followed by a timely blast. Because of that, the Padres have set their sites on acquiring a major bat this offseason. The name that has surfaced the most in the past few week or so is Manny Ramirez. However, Theo Epstein has made it clear that if they are to trade Manny (a future hall of famer) then they would like equal value in return.... Jake Peavy to be precise. So far, the rumors are leading us to believe that a trade of Manny Ramirez for Jake Peavy might actually happen. This of course has left many baseball pundits and fa...

This All Seems Familiar....
2007-02-24 16:28:06
This all seems a little too familiar. Drew Bledsoe starts the season a quarterback for a team loaded with tons of talent, good coaching, and a stifling defense. Drew and his team are picked to go all the way to the Super Bowl, pummeling teams unmercifully along the way. Drew comes out looking to throw fastball strikes to wide open receivers with the intention of parading up and down the field on helpless defenses. Instead, Drew ends up throwing Gyroballs into the hands of the opposing teams' secondary. Drew repeats the process. Over and over again. Drew gets benched for young back-up quarterback. Young back-up quarterback becomes an overnight sensation due to his ability to make intillegent decisions in the pocket and obvious leadership abilities. Young back-up is said to be dating an extremely attractive pop singer. The team goes on a tear and begins trampling over opponents one after the other. Now said team is considered hands down favorites to make it to the Super Bow...

Matsuzaka Destined for Pinstripes?
2007-02-24 16:28:06
I just found a link on Metsblog.com to a disturbing article that concerns what I thought was our soon-to-be-Japanese ace. I have no idea what the validity of this is, but if it's true then I am certainly a little worried about the whole situation. Here's a small bit, I've been told that if the Sox knew the Mets had the second highest bid ($38M), higher than the Yankees ($32M), they never would have bid $51.11 to win him. That comes from a very good source. Moreover, what I heard from the same source who is close to negotiations that what will happen is that Selig, Boras, and Seibu have a deal in place, where Boras pays Seibu $25 mil (1/2 the Red Sox bid) and he owns the rights to Mats uzaka, and puts him on the market BY X-MAS for the highest bidder, and Selig has signed off on it... Not cool.

The Time Has Come
2006-09-06 19:42:02
The Time has come to for Dave and the Douglas to move on. Blogging the Red Sox over the past several months has been a fun and exciting experience for the both of us. We have moved on to another site which is still hosted by us and blogged by us, http:///www.daveandthedouglas.com. W e are excited about our new project because we feel that this site will allow us to broaden our spectrum a little bit. We will still cover the Red Sox, but we will now also be covering football and whatever else pops into our twisted heads. We think that this blog will allow us to really let our personalities run wild (although that could be dangerous) and will be a little less focused on stricly the boston Red Sox and more on the rest of the world as we see it. For those select few who read us from time to time, we thank you so much for reading and commenting and we sincerely hope you will follow and enjoy our new blog. Thanks! Battle Cry
2006-08-22 06:45:01
There is mixed feelings in Red Sox Nation right now. Feelings of pain, loss, sorrow, bitterness, and defeat are swirling throughout the land. Feelings brought on by the recent collapse of a team that everyone felt could do something special again. Winning every year is something that every fan would love to get used too, but with all that winning can come a very big consequence. Losing can be a lot more difficult to understand when you are so used to your team winning. If you are feeling that the Red Sox have officially lost their opportunity to make the postseason for a fifth consecutive season then you are most certainly not alone. If you are standing tall proclaiming that Boston will make a remarkable surge down the stretch, overcome their deficit to the Yankees and be the team to beat in the playoffs, then you are probably standing alone in a field surrounded by nothing more than the sound of chirping crickets. So what is Red Sox Nation feeling rig...

David Wells Clears Waivers
2006-08-22 06:45:01
According to Metsblog.com, Davi d Wells has cleared waivers and is eligible to be traded to any team. The Mets would most likely be interested seeing how they will be without Glavine for the year. I would highly doubt the Red Sox would be willing to trade Wells because some still think they are in contention. Kudos to those guys who think that. Unless of course Lastings Milledge is involved. Highly unlikely...

Melky Cabrera, LFP - Chien Ming-Wang Eric Hinske jumps straight into the madness with a start in right.  Craig Breslow is the man who was sent down to make room for Hinske.  Look for Jason Johnson to be sent down after his start today to make room for Keith Foulke.  However, The Globe is also suggesting that Rudy Seanez or Julian Tavarez could be the odd guy out.  In the same article, we find out that Carlos Pena hit a homer in his Pawtucket debut, and will most likely get called up when the ros...

There is clearly a problem
2006-08-15 06:33:01
I am currently in the midst of watching another pitching debacle by the Red Sox and I had to stop and make a post. The Red Sox starters have supposedly had some serious problems pitching into the seventh inning and beyond in the past few weeks, therefore causing the bullpen to be overworked. So why the hell are we not taxing the starters a little bit more when the situation is calling for it. Josh Beckett got smacked around a little in the first inning to the tune of three runs tonight. He pitched a scoreless second, gave up two more in the third, and then shut the Tigers down for the next three innings. He left in the sixth inning with 107 pitches. He battled with Francona over going back out for one more inning, but Tito already had his mind made up. He was turning to resident hero Rudy Seanez instead. Rudy pitched an un-Seanez like seventh retiring all three batters he faced, but then returned to form in the eighth giving up two runs off a...
