NCAA First Round at a Very Quick Glance
2007-03-13 07:13:00
Now is the time of year where everything I normally do shuts down, as my brain is bombarded with hours upon hours of research and furious scribbling.  Yes, March Madness consumes my very being, while my friends wonder where the hell I've been for 3 weeks.  Thus begins my argument for the title of best postseason in all of sports.  Here's some of my quick notes, which you'll probably find I've re-hashed from ESPN, SI.com, and CBSsportsline.com, among others. Teams I'm High On (no particular order): UCLA - I don't care if they bowed out hella early in the Pac-10 Tourney.  I think this team has what it takes to reach the Final Four, and probably should have been a 1 seed. Texas A&M - Easily the best 3 seed.  Probably better than all the 2 seeds as well.  Love Acie Law III.  This team can do some damage. Florida - Duh.  Defending National Champ with all its starters back.  Still, they've gotta lose sometime...right? Kansas - I love...

I've Got Four Aces, What You Got?

Have you ever searched Google images with the two words, "Red Sox"? Try it. One would think that you might get a picture of a fist pumping Papelbon, a Cheshire grin from Big Papi, or the died dreadlocks of Manny Ramirez. Sorry, that's not the case. How about pictures of any one of the members of the already legendary 2007 rotation?Nope. Beleagured bullpen that's already falling apart before the season? Uh-uh. Terry Francona smoking a cigar? Nay. Hazel Mae tonguing Mrs. Matsuzaka and pulling a small tit grab for the camera? Nice try. You don't get any of that. Instead, you get a giant picture of Pamela Anderson's mammoth tits. Thought I'd share.

Red Sox Scoping a New Closer?
2007-03-10 22:44:04
With Antonella Barbona (Is that her name? Do you really care?) being suddenly bumped from American Idol, word has it that she is in the running as a possible candidate for the closer spot on the Red Sox . With Theo suddenly feeling a little nervous over his overlooked bullpen, he might be looking to pull the trigger on a new candidate. Can she pitch? No. Does she have a fastball? Most likely not. Is she smoking hot and surrounded by controversy? Absolutely. Will she be a good presence in the locker room? I'm sure the fellas would say yes. Would Red Sox Nation be content with watching their brilliant rotation dominate an opposing team for eight innings before turning it over to Antonella in the ninth? Could the crowd handle watching her lustfull stroll from the bullpen to the dugout, occasionally "dropping" her glove or blowing a kiss to the drunk old guys in the bleacher seats? Would this be good for the team's PR responsibilities? Would the standing room only sections actually sel...

Curt Schilling has a new blog, rendering Dave and The Douglas virtually useless.  It's already my favorite blog.  Seriously, after reading his March 7 entry, I can't possibly think why anyone would go to the Globe, the Herald, DirtDogs, or any of us idiot bloggers for Red Sox insight and info. I love how Curt continues to give away what Dan Shaugnessy is trying to sell.  I wish every Boston athlete would do the same.  Curt does some great stuff.  I wish I had one ounce of his outlook and optimism.  Love him or hate him, he's making the world a better place (politics aside, just speaking from a charity standpoint).  I hope he has a great year, and comes back for one more.

Tough night.  Both UMass and Duke fell in overtime of their respective tournaments.  In case you didn't know, those are the two teams I root for.  I like UMass because I went there.  I like Duke because, well...they're better than you. (That was in jest.  Actually I like them because they seem to have class.  I know, after last Sunday's game that's debatable.  Still, I've always liked them because they play smart and beat teams with more physical talent.  Let's be honest, Josh McRoberts isn't exactly a gazelle on the court). Anyway, this was supposed to be UMass' year in the A-10.  Despite a solid regular season record which included a win in Louisville, we all knew the Minutemen would have to run the gauntlet in the A-10 tourney.  I don't think a second round loss to a team named the Billikens is going to sway the selection committee.  Travis Ford did a fairly good job this year, but this game was painful to wat...

I?d like to offer a special shout out to the UMass men?s basketball team for their outstanding A-10 season.  The Minutemen are co-champions of the A-10 with Xavier, who is most likely headed to the NCAA Tournament.  It?s UMass? first conference title since the 95-96 season.   Stephane Lasme grabbed all kinds of hardware, after being named A-10 Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, the A-10 First Team, and the A-10 Defensive Team.  The blocked-shot specialist is only the 3rd guy in NCAA history to record 4 triple-doubles in a single season.  See you in the NBA, young buck.   Rashaun Freeman also made the A-10 First Team.   UMass is the #2 seed in the A-10 Tourney and will play Thursday night at 6:30 against the winner of Saint Louis/ Duquesne.  Now go out there and get that automatic bid, fellas!

Okay, I?ve just about had it with the pro-UNC propaganda.  Everywhere I look, people are shitting on Gerald Henderson for yesterday?s foul (here's links to just a few).  You idiots need to watch the full friggin tape.  Tyler ?I?m so not the next Eric Montross? Hansbrough felt his 26 points and 17 boards wasn?t enough with a 12 point lead, and with 14 seconds to go, thought he was throw the exclamation point down.  The crowd would chant his name, he?d be lauded as a hero and every UNC whore would line up to suck his dick after the game.    Instead, he got fouled on the way up by Steve Johnson, and Gerald Henderson?s forearm landed squarely on Tyty?s nose.  Two things; number one, ESPN only likes to show that one angle where Johnson is out of the picture, and all you see is Henderson coming across.  And two, Henderson is going up to block the shot/commit a foul, but Hansbrough loses the ball?and this all occurred WITHIN A SPLIT FUCKING ...

Broncos fans, breathe a sigh of relief.  All the jokes, taunts, inopportune fumbles, inexplicable tosses, 70?s porn mustache, left-handed lobs, and complete and utter brain farts are over.  Jake Plummer has officially retired from the National Football League.   It?s been 4 long years for Denver fans, which have had to endure the heartbreak of their own and the laughter of others. Mike Shanahan swore he could make a winner out of Jake Plummer, but the Snake never fully materialized as the top-flight QB Mike envisioned him to be.    It really wasn?t all bad for Jake in Denver.  No, seriously?hear me out.  2005 was actually a great season for Jake.  His QB rating was a solid 90.2, and he led the Broncos to the AFC Championship Game against the eventual Super Bowl Champion Steelers.  He only tossed 7 interceptions that year.  And oh yes, he became the first opposing QB to earn a win against the Patriots during Tom Brady?s t...

Great win? I'm confused.
2007-03-06 04:41:03
Things have gone from bad to worse for Celtics fans.  Sunday?s 2-OT thriller against the T-Wolves saw the Celts win their fourth straight game.  They now sit a comfortable 3 games behind Memphis for the most ping pong balls.   Now the conundrum is a reality.  Do you want the Celtics to lose?  Is it wrong to root against them in the hopes they land Odrant?  Do you want to punch Doc Rivers in the face for trying?   It is quite possible that, with the 2nd worst record, another team can win the lottery.  Now Boston would get the 3rd pick.  To be this bad and not land Durant or Oden would be a bitter pill to swallow.  Imagine if they end up with a guy like Chauncey Billups.  That would be a wasted pick.   Then again, losing to your former team that has stunk something awful this year while you?re supposed to be a playoff contender must be a tough one to take, too.  Until you read this report on how wonderful you are,...

My Wednesday Night
2007-03-02 04:39:02
Last night was an incredible night for those of us who shun the outside nightlife in favor of great sports.  At 7, Red Sox Nation was witness to the first Spring Training game of the year, headlined by Curt Schilling.  Curt looked strong, and hopefully that will shut up the Dan Shaughnessy?s and Jackie MacMullan?s of the world about his weight?for the time being.  I also received more than a few snickers from my friends after touting the skill of Jacoby Ellsbury before the game.  Damn I could go for a Snickers bar right now.   The Sox kickoff, um, spectacular (if you can call it that, which I wouldn?t) was all well and good, but opposite NESN on Fox Sports saw the Celts laying the wood to those Knickerbockers.  In case you missed it, the C?s are on a two-game win streak.  Could a playoff push be in the making?  Probably not, but a push right out of the top 3 picks in the 2007 draft could be on its way.  Damn Paul Pierce.   I say top ...

Part of me wants Tim Wakefield to pitch for another five years because of what he has done for this team over the course of his career.... ....another part of me wants to see what John Lester can do in a full season as a starter. The odds are on Dice K that he will have a fantastic rookie campaign.... ....but I can't stop thinking that Josh Beckett is going to be the ace of this staff. Yes I realize that Pam Anderson Lee Rock doesn't have VD, but instead has hepatitis B (C?). Damn you Paul Pierce if we don't attain a top three pick... ...damn you Gods if we do land the top three pick and we pick the wrong guy (ala Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan circa 1984). Is there any particular reason that Gerald Green isn't logging 40 minutes a night right now.... ....and is there any fucking reason as to why Scalabrine is logging ANY minutes right now? Manny Wants to Stay...Doesn't Anyone Listen?
2007-02-28 10:36:02
...from the Herald... Ramirez? agent yesterday said the slugger wants to stay with the Red Sox [team stats] for the remainder of his playing career.     ?Mann y is at peace with his situation in Boston,? said Gene Mato, one of Ramirez? representatives, yesterday. ?He has indicated to me that he would look forward to the opportunity to retire in a Boston uniform.?     According to a photographer on the scene, team president and CEO Larry Lucchino approached Ramirez behind the batting cage on Field No. 5 at the minor league complex and inquired about the health of his mother, who is currently recovering from surgery. Ramirez put his arm around Lucchino and guided him a few steps away from the cage, where he expressed contrition for the ?trouble? he caused by arriving one week after the rest of the position players. ...it's kind of like Pam and Tommy Lee. The tried to break up a few times but they always ended up staying together. Of course,...

Mariano Rivera is the greatest closer of all time. Hands down. Bar none. His run of dominance over the past 10 seasons is something that can only be defined as greatness. Trevor Hoffman may have the record, but Mariano has the respect. There isn't a closer in the history of closers that is respected as much as Mariano Rivera is, both by the fans and the players. His entrance to a game was always highlighted by the song "Enter Sandman" by Metallica but it might as well have been the theme song to Superman. But for three seasons, from 2002-2004, there was a better closer. There was a man that was feared by every hitter that faced him. He blew 100 mph heaters past you when you were looking for a change-up, and just when you were sitting on a fastball, he pulled the string and sent the next pitch in at 77. He was big, he was intense, and he feared nobody. His name was Eric Gagne. Gagne will always have a spot in the Dave and the Douglas hall of fame for the brillia...

Damien Nash, 1982-2007
2007-02-27 04:33:01
Here we go again.  The Denver Broncos experienced another tragedy over the weekend. Damien Nash collapsed and died at home, just hours after a charity event organized for heart-transplant research in honor of his brother.  Reading this article is heart-breaking.  It sounded like he was happy at his time of death, being surrounded by everyone he loves while doing a great thing.  It's terrible that something like this can happen to a guy who used what little celebrity he had to make the world a better place. Nash wasn't as highly-visible a player as Darrent Williams, but he was an important part of the Broncos' family.  Judging by his reported conversation with Coach Shanahan, he could have been looking at an increased role with the team.  24 years old is just far too young.  Once again, my thoughts and prayers go out to the Nash family. Tough time to be a Broncos' fan.  You just have to hope that the bad news is over and the organization ca...
Dear Dan,

Dear Dan, You know Dan, I've been wondering if your feeble attempts at publicly insulting Curt Schilling are ever going to cause someone of importance to turn to you and just say, "Hey Dan, can you shut the fuck up for once? Please?" Yes Dan, we know Curt loves the spotlight, and yes Dan, we know Curt Schilling is not in Marathon running shape this Spring, and yes Dan, we know you don't like him, and yes Dan, we know that your lashing out at Curt is most likely a direct result of you being tormented in high school for sitting inside typing away on those warm summer days when the other kids were all outside playing ball. You couldn't swing a bat, the kids called you a sissy. Now you make a living trying to turn the fans against the players the way the kids turned against you. Hang on one second, I'm.... I think I.... yup I just had a thought... WE KNOW THEY ARE OVER PAYED PRIMA DONNAS WHO PLAY A SPORT FOR A LIVING. WE DON'T CARE, WE LOVE THEM...
Live From New York
2007-02-26 22:32:01
So I attended the Duke-St. Johns battle at Madison Square Garden yesterday.  I didn't get there until there were 3 minutes left in the 1st half because, well...long story short, my friend is a bumbling idiot.  I missed Duke's 12-0 run to start the game, and when we finally sat down, DeMarcus Nelson hit two free-throws to make the score 34-8 in favor of Duke.  Yeah, no barn-burner here.  Duke spent the rest of the game playing clock management and won 67-50. I don't consider it a wasted trip though.  It was my first time at the Garden, and the first time I've seen Duke play up close in person.  We even got to see a little skirmish between Josh McRoberts and some guy (the ESPN recap said it was St. John's Aaron Spears).  We even got to see St. John's fans throw shit on the court when the game was well out of reach (even after the P.A. guy reminded us NOT to throw stuff on the court.  Come on guys!).  And, I sat next to Colin Quin...

If Dave and I ever create a Hall of Fame, it might include roughly 2,000 players.  But I guarantee, after reading this, that Curt Schilling will be a first-ballot Obstructed Seats HOFer. Dave and I hate Dan Shaughnessy.  He's the biggest waste of ink-to-paper in sports history.  And yes, we are jealous that a man of his ilk can hold down the greatest position in all of New England sports media.  For Curt to attack him in the manner in which he did so is beyond greatness. Other first ballot guys will probably include: Jose Canseco, Orlando Cabrera, Antoine Walker, Art Monk, Jeremy Roenick, Chone Figgins, Drew Bledsoe, Rich Garces, Walter McCarty, and about 400 others.

In the wake of Dennis Johnson's death, I thought I'd share a quick story.  Before the current days of pro sports players making professional appearances, and charging outrageous fees for their signature and merchandise to scribble on, public signings were quite simpler.  Athletes would go nearly anywhere if the venue would put up the money.  Dennis Johnson was one of those guys.  He came to an auto dealership in my area (I think it was in West Springfield...it's not really that important) when I was about 7 or 8 years old.  My father, great man that he is, took me to meet D.J. and get an autograph.  This was back when the Celtics ruled the Massachusetts sports landscape (I know that's difficult for you youngins to believe, but it's true).  When we showed up, it was apparent that word spread quickly.  We waited in line for what seemed like 1,000 hours, just waiting for our moment with D.J.  My dad started getting worried, because it...

Every once in awhile, I see a performance I think is worth noting from someone I don't really give two damns about.  Last night, that person was Jeff Garcia. Here's a guy who was called a homo by T.O., declared ugly by Terry Bradshaw, lost in the football abyss in Cleveland and then the career-stopper in Detroit, and is now winding up his NFL life in the unenviable role as the backup in Philly.  Yet the guy played his guts out, despite going down hard twice at the end of the 3rd quarter, and the Philly fans booing that he got back up!  That's rough when your own fans don't want to see you get up off the turf.  Well, he only led the Eagles to a big win on a 4th quarter comeback, finishing with 312 yards, 3 TDs, and no picks.  I bet the phone lines in Philly are still buzzing with calls to replace Garcia with A.J. Feeley.  Good for Jeff.  Philadelphia fans are far and away the worst sports fans in the world.  Enjoy your ongoing ch...

MetsBlog Reporting on Julio Lugo
2007-02-24 16:28:06
Just wanted to share this link to Mets Blog .com. They are reporting that Julio Lugo is being chased by the Mets and the Dodgers. We all know that Minaya has coveted Lugo for quite some time, but didn't they already lock up Valentin? Also, the post states that Olney is talking about the Red Sox as being the frontrunners. Of course, maybe the Dodgers are planning to trade Furcal to the Red Sox in order to get Manny??? Perhaps a little NBA-style sign and trade is in order here with Lugo. Maybe the Dodgers are just greedy and they want a whole infield of short stops and second baseman. Maybe. Who knows.

Manny Trade Rumors Swirling
2007-02-24 16:28:06
It is becoming increasingly more apparent that there are some teams out there with some serious interest in our beloved slugger, Mann y Ramirez. The Hartford Courant is even going so far as to say that Manny may be dealt by Saturday. The Red Sox are surely looking to lock up a deal with JD Drew before they move Ramirez, or they will be left with a major hole in their lineup and will need to fill it via trade. The Courant discusses the Dodgers as being the best fit, The Dodgers might be the best fit for the Red Sox, with an array of top minor league prospects at their disposal, including third baseman Andy LaRoche, pitcher Chad Billingsley and outfielder Matt Kemp. And Ramirez, who has veto power over any trade, would probably welcome a reunion with former Red Sox manager Grady Little. With the departure of JD Drew, the Dodgers are in dire need of a big bat in their lineup, and would easily have the pieces to put together a trade for Man Ram. The SF Chronicle sites the Giant's havin...

Boston makes a "fair" offer
2007-02-24 16:28:06
According to ESPN.com, Boston has made what Larry Lucchino deems a "fair offer" to Matsuzaka. In other words, they are about 50 million away from what Scott Boras is demanding. If I could guess I would imagine somewhere in the realm of four years 32 million was offered. Either way, this ones going down to the wire folks.

More on Drew
2007-02-24 16:28:06
I find this whole JD Drew thing a little too disturbing. I was just reading an article posted on MLB.com about the contract being offered by Boston and I came across this statement: The Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox and Drew may soon come to terms on a multiyear deal that would make him the highest-paid player on the team. But a potential stumbling block remains. Does that bother anyone else? What the hell has JD Drew ever done to warrant that kind of money? What could he possible do for the Red Sox that would make them want to pay him that kind of money? I realize that they think he is on the verge of breaking out, but are they really going to pay him 14-15 million per on the hopes that he miraculously hits .310 with 35 home runs and 120 RBI? He's 31 years old and hasn't done that even once in his career. Holy shit, someone tell me what I'm missing here. Too Manny Trades and Signings
2007-02-24 16:28:06
While my mind is spinning over the probability that JD Drew will be a starting outfielder for Boston next year, I wanted to stop and discuss some of the other situations that the Red Sox are currently in. It is anyone?s guess right now as to what the team is actually going to look like next year. With a trade involving Mann y Ramirez appearing imminent at this point (San Francisco, both LA teams, and even the White Sox being talked about as potential suitors), the Red Sox could seemingly head in 100 different directions if they were to dump Boston?s most beloved right handed hitter in a trade. Hypothetically speaking, if Boston traded Manny tomorrow, that would leave them with holes in right field, left field, short stop, second base, a spot in the rotation, closer, and two or three slots in the bullpen. Not to mention a vacant bench which is in need of a left handed bat with some pop, a back-up catcher (brace yourself Wakefield), and some speed. The way it?s looking right now, tradi...

Indians Interested in Foulke
2007-02-24 16:28:06
The India ns are reportedly interested in signing Boston's former closer, Keith Foulke. "Keith says he's as healthy as he was before the 2004 season," Horwits said. "Every team we've talked to has no concerns about his health." Why do oft-injured players who are in the twilight of their careers always claim that they are in the best shape of the life? I will always hold Foulke in high regard for his efforts in 2004 and I honestly wish his reign in Boston ended better than it did. Considering the present state of our bullpen, I would do anything to have the 2004 Keith Foulke back in there. I wish luck to Keith on his future endeavors and would like to personally thank him for what he did to bring this city a championship.

Rumors: Red Sox Show Interest in Tomo Ohka
2007-02-24 16:28:06
Apparently, Boston is searching high and low for pitching. Tomo Ohka is on their radar, Ohka, 30, went 4-5 with a 4.82 ERA in 18 starts for the Milwaukee Brewers last season, one in which he missed two months to a shoulder impingement. Over eight years, he has a 48-57 record and 4.04 ERA. He made $4.53 million last season and, because of the manic market for pitching in free agency, could command $7 million or more. I wonder if they are just trying to make Matsuzaka a little more comfortable. Rumor has it that they have their sites set on a left handed reliever out of Japan who is eligible for free agency. I'll pass on Ohka thanks. 7 Million is a little too much for a long reliever who was a mediocre pitcher in the National League.

Rumors: Pettitte Retiring, Clemens Going for One More
2007-02-24 16:28:06
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Andy Pettitte is leaning toward retirement while Roger Clemens is coming back for one full season. If Pettitte doesn't come back then that means Houston will be the odds-all favorite to land Clemens. Now that they have Carlos Lee planted in the middle of their line-up, Clemens wouldn't have to worry about receiving the lowest run support in baseball if he returns. The older Roger gets, the harder it will be for him to compete every five days if he has to go on the road. I'm not getting my hopes up over Roger returning to Boston right now, I'm more concerned about the lack of position players and the need for relief pitchers.
