2007-12-07 22:21:00
Warm-up over, Abahani and Mohammedan gear up for the third and final match of the Teletalk Series hoping that the decider will put an end to the scarcity of crowd. With the charity series - organised by the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) to raise fund for the victims of Cyclone Sidr that ripped through the southern part of the country last month - locked 1-1, today's match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium will separate the winners. The match will kick off at 4.30pm.The two perennial foes' failure to attract fans in the last two matches was not totally unexpected as people have already turned their faces from the game. Even during competitive matches between the city rivals, the stadium remained half-full.A total of 14,000 tickets worth just over Tk four lakh have been sold so far but the organisers are still hoping for a boost by the holiday crowd.Mohammedan won the first encounter 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation 90 minutes but Abahani bounced back with...

Farewell to Nayeemuddin
2007-11-26 20:10:00
For the first time in the history of Bangladesh football, an outgoing foreign coach received a farewell party when footballers bade Syed Nayeemuddin goodbye yesterday. The Indian coach, who joined the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) last August, saw his contract terminated after just three months at the start of November. The 60-year-old Nayeemuddin, who has yet to leave for home, also set an example by giving wristwatches to 30 players - who belonged to his camp for the Merdeka Cup and Nehru Cup tournaments as well as the World Cup pre-qualifiers.Nayeemuddin had earlier wanted to give some cash out of his remuneration from the BFF to the players, who refused to take any money. He finally had his way by handing over the expensive gifts at a party at a local hotel. Although it seemed that Brothers Union were organising the farewell, sources said that it was an effort of BFF president SA Sultan.Nayeemuddin coached Brothers Union last season - his second stint at the Gopibagh club in...

Abahani Suffer in Sudden Death
2007-11-24 21:11:00
Abahani's dreams to end the season with an international football title shattered yesterday when this year's Bangladesh professional league champions bowed out of Assam's 56th Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy on penalties. The Dhaka heavyweights paid for numerous missing chances against ten-man ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) of Mumbai, who won 5-4 in sudden death tiebreakers after the 120-minute second semifinal ended goalless at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. ONGC, who will take on Thailand's Bangkok Port Authority in tomorrow's final at the same venue, were reduced to ten men in the first minute of the second half. But Abahani's firepower was not enough to beat rival goalkeeper Bilifung Narzary, who pulled off a series of saves.Abahani manager Satyajit Das Rupu told The Daily Star over phone from the biggest city of India's northeast that Abahani fluffed so many chances that they should have won the semifinal by a big margin. "Officially we are unbeaten but we ...

2007-11-20 19:19:00
Abahani strolled into the semifinals of the 56th Bordoloi Trophy as Group A champions when they drew goalless with defending champions Assam Electricity Board today in Guwahati. Playing on a cold November afternoon at the Nehru Stadium, the Dhaka heavyweights who rested a few key players wasted a number of chances with Moni, Joy, Pranotosh and Emily fluffing sitters in the last quarterfinals group match. Bangladesh's B League champions Abahani, who won their opener against fellow semifinalsts Oil India Ltd 2-0, finished with four points while the local powermen bowed out with just one point.Abahani will take on Group A runners-up Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) of Mumbai in the second semifinal on Thursday while Oil India face Thailand's Bangkok Port Authority in Wednesday's first semifinal. The final is slated for November 24.Abahani team: Biplab, Obaidur, Nazrul, Ghansah, Mintu, Ujjal (Zahed), Joy, Pranotosh, Robin (Abdullah Parvez), Moni and Emily.

Abahani Meet AEB Today
2007-11-20 18:19:00
Abahani will look to seal their place in the semifinals of the 56th Bordoloi Trophy when the Dhaka giants meet defending champions Assam Electricity Board (AEB) in the last quarterfinal league match today. The Group-B match will be held at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati, Assam. The holders, in a must win situation, are on the verge of elimination after losing their opening match 1-0 to Oil India Limited.Abahani's 2-0 win over Oil India on Sunday, thanks to goals either side of the half by striker Saifur Rahman Moni, has put the Bangladesh professional league champions on top of the table and all but confirm their place in the last four with a better goal difference.Having ended their two group matches, the Oilmen have three points with an inferior goal difference that can only come handy if Abahani lose 4-0 to the pointless powermen.A message from Guwahati last night, however, confirmed that Abahani would not relax and go for a win when a draw will suffice for them to emerge group cha...

Kyrgyzstan 3-0 Bangladesh
2007-08-25 12:43:00
Kyrgyzstan tore apart an exhausted Bangladesh 3-0 yesterday to stay alive for a final berth in the Nehru Cup.Vadim Herchenko was unstoppable and the winger exploited the tired legs of the Bangladesh defenders to set up a brace for Hurshid Lutfullaev and one goal for Ruslan Djamshidov, the striking duo who toured Bangladesh during the AFC Challenge Cup in April last year. With two wins from three matches, Kyrgyzstan now face a must win situation against hosts India, who also have six points but enjoy a better goal difference.Ruslan wasted an early chance against Bangladesh, who ended their campaign with three defeats in four games inside just seven days, retained the same line-up from their 1-1 draw against Cambodia two days earlier. After the wake-up call, Syed Nayeemuddin's boys took brief control with strings of passes and Zahid Hossain hammered the ball inches wide from 30 yards in the 26th minute. Two minutes later, makeshift rightback Ariful unnecessarily lingered with the ball a...
