Federation Nation Northern Divisional - Day 1
2009-08-29 03:17:00
As I waited with my partner in the Escanaba harbor, I had a good bit of excitement at the possibility of what I could catch and my chances to do well in this tournament.  The plan was to head all the way to the east side of Big Bay de Noc and work several of the key spots and areas that we had so much success on during Monday's practice. The first area, was an absolute ghost town, no fish or bait.  Probably wasted too much time there.  My next area was a large peninsula/point, there were 2 other boats working the area, I caught a nice keeper on a Quickstrike spinnerbait, then just a few shorts from there.  We hopped around to a few areas, finally I missed and then caught a nice 3lb plus smallmouth on a 6" BassTrix swimbait.  I then went back through this area only to have a giant smallie climb all over the swimbait and somehow not get a hook. The next area I caught another keeper on my spinnerbait, I then went to my bigger swimbait, 5" Optimum Baby Line Thru ...

Bay De Noc Practice Days 1 and 2
2009-08-21 15:07:00
I drove pretty much straight through from MN to the UP on Friday night/Saturday morning so I could start fishing early on Saturday morning for the Northern Divisional that would start on Wednesday.  I arrived around Cedar River area at about 8am, I was greeted with 6 foot plus waves, I fished a little in the harbor and caught a northern and headed 8 miles out to Whaleback Shoal, I found it to windy to fish when I got there.  It was time to meet a team member Tim back at the landing.  We headed up to Ford River area, had a couple bites but no fish.  We then decided to check into our cabin for the evening at Lindberg's Cove up in Gladstone, great resort right on the lake!  Tim and I decided we needed to catch a fish before dinner.  We goofed around, ended up catching 1 keeper largemouth on a white Super K swim jig and then Tim got a nice smallie on a tube, we also caught a few short fish, time for dinner and bed.Day 2 we tried more deep areas, fishing br...

Bay De Noc Practice Days 3 and 4
2009-08-21 15:07:00
Monday morning greeted us with very light winds and a calm LIttle and Big Bay de Nocs to run around on.  We spent just a few minutes checking some pencil reeds between Escanaba and Gladstone, not even a bite.  It was time to check the fish in Big Bay de Noc that we found late Sunday.  When we got there it did not take long for me to catch a beautiful 4lbs smallmouth on a Tru-Tungsten Depth Shad.  Tim ended up catching a 4 and 5lb bass on small spinnerbait, then we got the heck out of there, 3 quick fish for 14lbs and we saw plenty more there. We spent the rest of the day covering water looking for more of the same type structure and cover, we did best on spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and swimbaits.  I alternated between a 13/16oz Golden Shiner Secret Weapon Lures spinnerbait, Ima Flit in Chartreuse Shad, 6" BassTrix in BlueBack Herring and the best bait for me was the 5" Optimum Baby Line Thru Swimbait in Ayu.  Both Tim and I would have had around 20...

Too Busy....
2009-08-07 21:28:00
Traveling the past two weeks, so this blog entry will try to get me all caught up in one shot.  I was home last weekend between trips, my buddy Ryan Brant decided to fish the Celebration OUtdoors tournament on Lake Marion kind of last minute.  Neither of us had fished Marion since last summer, but we thought it would be fun none the less.  We did not get to practice at all, so we had a couple ideas and decided to start on one of our favorite deeps spots.  We fished the area pretty good and only had 1 missed bite.  We then tried  a few shallow areas, we caught a couple shorts and then I got a good bite on my favorite 3/8oz Green Pumpkin/Brown Tru-Tungsten jig using a 3" Green Pumpkin Chigger craw as a trailer, it ended up being about 3.5lbs.  Definitely a good first fish! The next are we fished was a mid-depth area that usually has good coontail clumps, after a few casts I got a decent 2lb fish on my jig and that was the only bite we got there....

Bassmaster Weekend Series Tourney at Prairie Du Chien - 2009
2009-08-01 21:26:00
Sunday was my 3rd Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament of this year.  In general river fishing suits my fishing strengths well, so even though I had not fished this strech of river in about 10 years, i still felt I could compete down there.  I ended up getting 3 full practice days inn.  Fishing both pools 9 and 10, based on that, I really felt I had two areas in Pool 9 that could produce a potentail winning bag.I am not sure what happened, we got a lot of rain and most things got muddied, but my area remained in great shape, but the fish seemed to have vanished.  Long story short, I was back at the lock around 11am and neither myself or partner had a fish in the livewell.  We hit a rock point just below the lock, nothing happening there.  At that time, I pushed the panic button and went to the area I was most confident that I could get a keeper bite and put at least one in the well.  It was a shallow flat backwater area with just a little wood...
FLW Fantasy Fishing Group Prizes Keep on Giving!
2009-07-25 21:24:00
Hey all,Got some great feedback on some fish catches on the some of the prizes given away on my FLW Fantasy Fishing group from the Lake Norman event.  Mychal proves that the west side bass like their Tru-Tungsten hand pour worms!"I got the Tru-Tungsten worms and you even sent them in green pumpkin... you are the man!  Put them to use yesterday, attached is a picture of the 4lb result.  I just figured I'd let you know that this one definitely worked for your sponsors, I am picking up a few more packs tomorrow after work, awesome worms, I was fishing senkos most of the day but things started to slow down, popped the TT's on and the fish kept eating them up (not to mention they last a hell of a lot longer than senkos).  Take care man.Mychal Boerman"If anyone else has had success with their prizes, feel free to drop me an email as well.  Thanks for the feedback Mychal!RichLindgren.com Rich's Bassin' Forum Bass Fishing Tackle Blog

Catch Up Time
2009-07-23 21:23:00
Man not enough time to blog in the day these days....Couple things to update on:Check out this 7lb 2oz pig that Richard Wong caught from a local metro lake, see a story here.  Hard to believe this thing did not weigh more, guess it was lacking in length, but not girth!  Either way, I am sure Mark Zona would label this as a "Man Bear Pic", "Slaunch Kong" or "Fence Panda"!!! Richard Westley Wong of Minneapolis caught and released this 7-pound, 2-ounce largemouth bass last week on a Twin Cities lake.--> I had a fairly rough practice down on Mississippi River this past weekend.  I was practicing for an upcoming Bassmaster Weekend Series.  I fish both Pools 9 & 10, not much current in either pool, made it tough to pin down any schools of fish.  Got a couple areas that have some potential, one more day to nail them down before practice.I actually just add a new tournament to my tournament schedule, I will be fishing the Celebration Bass Tournament on Augu...

Rush Lakes - Gopher Bassmasters Tournament - July 11, 2009
2009-07-17 21:21:00
Saturday morning came very early this weekend, as several Gopher members stayed up in Hinckley the night before and participated in the town festival on Friday night.  I actually was retying most of my rods as my partner Rick was parking the truck and others launched.  We were boat #2 and boat #1 actually went to the same area on East Rush that we did.  We set down about 75 yards apart and worked a weedline towards each other.  I made sure I had my buoy on my deck, so if we ran into the school that I hoped was there, we would be able to stay on them.  (More on Buoys here)  Sure enough a few pitches with my 3/8oz Tru-Tungsten jig and I had a nice fish hooked and in the boat, as I fought it, I kicked the buoy in with my foot and it was game on.  I was able to boat 6 fish on my jig, lost 3, and my partner got 2 and lost 1.  After that the fish stopped biting, we tried a few other baits, but then left.On the next spot, I cracked a nice fish o...

Knife Lake - Gopher Bassmasters Tournament - July 12, 2009
2009-07-17 21:21:00
I was able to get up to Knife Lake on Friday night for about 3 hours to scout the lake for my tournament that was on Sunday, prior to that I had never been on the lake.  I did catch a few fish, but nothing bigger then about 2lbs, learned my way around the lake anyways.  Because of some last minute adjustments, I ended up fishing alone in this tournament and there for was last boat to take off.  So I decided to just start by the landing.  After working the shallows with buzzbaits, frogs, jigs and a chatterbait, I decided to toss my Carolina Rig out from one of the small points, it did not take long to put a nice solid keeper in the boat on a ring fry.  I ended up catching one more fish on the C-Rig and another on a Chompers Twin Tail Grub  on a TackleSmith Tungsten Bronzeback Football head jig.  Not too long after that, I picked up two smaller keepers on a chart/white Fishing Magician VooDoo.  Fished a few docks along there and got nothing on t...

Rush Lakes Practice Report
2009-07-10 09:19:00
Sunday I was able to get up to Rush City with John Haynes to get a little practice on  East & West Rush Lakes for my upcoming club tournament.  We did not get a super early start, probably on the water a little after 8am.  We checked a few reed & dock areas early, not much water on them to speak of, but John did manage a single small keeper.I then drove around East Rush and found what i thought looked to be a good looking inside turn in the outside weedline.  We caught 4 keeper bass from there and big pike, felt we did not need to catch anymore and left.  We then went froggin for a bit, had about 4 hits on my new Mad Maxx Frog, but they all just slapped at it or bumped, they would not commit.  We checked a few more deep areas, trying to duplicate our first area.  John got one bass and I went through a bunch of jig worm hooks, lost to pike.  After that, I went to check some more shallow stuff, did catch the nice 3.44lb bass pictured bel...

Congratulations to Shawn Holt from Princeton, KY!  He was the highest scoring member of my Bassin' Blog group for FLW Fantasy Fishing that did not win an FLW prize.Brief email interview with Shawn and this is what he had to say on his strategy:"I live near KY & Barkley Lakes and I did pick 4 locals & only one (David Young) made the top ten.  I picked Larry Nixon because I remember he did quite well on KY Lake in a BASS tournament back in the mid 90?s, I felt good about his chances to find some fish.  The other two of my picks that made the top ten (Keith Williams & Mark Rose) were made based on tips from Players Advantage."For Shawn's efforts, he has won a 9/16oz Citrus Shad Secret Weapon Lure QuickStrike Spinnerbait and will get a 30% off promo code to order anything he wants in the Secret Weapon Armory! Setting a FLW Fantasy Fishing Lineup for Lake Champlain
2009-07-07 21:17:00
Lake Champlain is an awesome fishery and a favorite for the anglers whenever a tour stops here, abundant big smallies and largemouth available, but as of late, largemouths have been winning most of the summer events of late, so think Green for you winners, although some solid finishes will likely come from Brown fish as well.Fishery Details:Type of water: natural lake - 6th largest in US behind the great lakesSurface area: 271,000 acresShoreline: 587 milesAverage depth: 64 feetMax depth: approximately 400 feetPrimary structure/cover: rocks, grass, flats, drops, docksSpecies: largemouth, smallmouthLength minimum: 12 inches for all speciesShould be lots of patterns, frogs and flipping milfoil to deep rock reefs for smallies. Here are my other anglers to watch:Dion HibdonJim MoynaghDave LefebreBasically I am sticking with the strategy to keep littering my lineup with anglers that are hot right now and have past experience and lots of wins & top 10's this week.  Plus a little m...

Another Potential World Record Bass Caught?
2009-07-04 21:15:00
Yesterday, reports of a potential world record largemouth bass started surfacing based a giant largemouth being caught out of Lake Biwa in Japan.  I think we will learn more today, but based on early reports, it actually may be a tie for the record and not a new World Record .So here are a few pictures that have surfaced, for fun of comparison, I have also posted a picture of Dotty when she was caught but not hooked legally and weighed 25.1lbs. Guess we will just have to wait as more details unfold....RichLindgren.com Rich's Bass in' Forum Bass Fishing Tackle Blog

2009-07-01 09:12:00
Here is a little tool that I developed mainly for my own use last spring and shared with a few close fishing buddies last year.  I finally decided it was too handy not to share with all of you.  Basically, I created a downloadable and printable PDF Tru-Tungsten Size chart that you can adhere to the inside lid of your terminal tackle box.  If you are like me, your hook box is a disaster and all your Tru-Tungsten weights are all mixed up, this way you can keep track of what weight you are using and when someone asks you, you can tell them.  Or when you get busted off, you can go back and make sure you use the same size that was working. You can see how handy this can be for my hook and weight box! Here it is in use, you can see, I also created a Flipping Weight Chart as well.Click Here to Download TT Weight ChartClick Here to Download Tru-Tungsten Flipping Weight ChartCouple things to note, make sure your print settings are set to 100% or No Scaling to get the right ...

Mississippi River - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #2 - June 28, 200
2009-06-30 09:11:00
Yesterday was my 2nd Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament, I was able to get two days of practice in for this event.  It sure would be nice to get some more time so I could expand my water and areas, but there is only so much time.  Based on my practice, I had one really strong area that I felt good about and a couple back up areas, plus some stuff that I had fished in that past that I felt could produce a few bites in a pinch.I drew boat #15 and a heck of a nice co-angler named Sam.  We arrived in my starting area and were the only boat there, I shut down a little short and used the trolling motor to get into position and as we approached I saw a surface swirl.  All ready with my Yellow Magic Popper in hand, I started firing casts towards the area the fish were boiling and they started biting pretty fast and furious.  A mixture of smallies and largemouths were biting, as well as some white bass and a walleye.  Once the topwater fizzled I switched to a ...

Mississippi River - Pool 4 Practice
2009-06-25 21:08:00
This past Saturday I had a window to get some fishing in, so I decided to get down to Pool 4 to start practicing for my next Bassamaster Weekend Series tourney.  Overall practice was hit and miss, found some fish in area that I practiced in for previous tournament, but its a long ways from Alma where we are launching from.Chunky bass that fell fer a Game Hawg creature bait on 3/16oz TT WeightMost of the other areas were hit and miss, but found one nice batch of fish relating to some grass, that was the bright spot of the day other then some ealry flipping and swim jig fish.  Other then that, it was an awesome weather day on the river and Lake Pepin, made it easy to get around other then the boat traffic.I did catch some nice fish on a new bait that i just tried.  KVD Perfect Plastics Game Hawg seems like a really nice bait, its like a Baby Brush How, but just a little bigger and some fine ribbing, very soft and scent built in.  I would reccomend in trying a ...

Last Weekend Club Tournament Recaps
2009-06-19 21:04:00
This past weekend, I had two Gopher Bassmasters club tournaments on Big & LIttle Green Lakes on Saturday, and Sunday we fished the Chisago/Lindstrom chain.  I was able to briefly practice the weekend before on Green. My partner Art & I started in a little shallow water pocket that had lots of pads, wood & other grass.  We were both able to get a limit from this area by a little after 8am.  I caught 2 of my better sized fish on a frog and on Kizew Gill Super K swim jig, the rest of the limit was filled with a tube & a weightless Green Pumpkin Ring Fry.  Art caught all 5 of his fish on a 8" Green Pumpkin Fork Worm on a 1/8oz texas rig.  The rest of the day, we pecked around docks, bluegill beds and other shallow cover, where I was able to cull 3 times, twice on the Ring Fry and once on a 3/8oz Tru-Tungsten Jig.  My final weight was 14.32lbs with a big fish of 3.82lbs.  It was good enough for 2nd place.  Art had around 7lbs an...

Setting an ESPN Fantasy Fishing Line-up for Kentucky Lake
2009-06-10 12:23:00
The Mississippi River is one of the great bass fisheries in this country, but this particular section (Fort Madison) I think is under a little bit of hard times from last year's flodding.  This time of year, fish should be really starting to gang up in pads and eel grass edges, but from the sounds of it, not much of it has grown back from last summer.  So if you can find some good stretches, they could be loaded, but also very crowded.  A strong wood flipping bite could play as well.  Either way, its nice to see the Elites visit the upper midwest for a change, should be a very exciting tournament, they will catch plenty of fish.  Look for Swimming Jigs to be a big player here.I am making some fairly serious changes this week to try to make some big moves, Alton Jones had to go, he was just too safe. Here are a few guys that I think would be solid fantasy fishing picks that are not on my team.  Chris Lane, Tommy Biffle, Iaconelli and Jami ...
