Falcon does not dissapoint
2008-01-14 00:00:00
Yesterday, Falcon Lake near Zapata, TX debuted in its first semi big time tournament as the FLW Stren Series visited this border reservoir.  Locals and pundits predicted that this one could break all the records, much like Amistad did when tournaments starting visiting there.  Turns out, they were right. After catching 27 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday, Jeremy Guidry finished the event with 110 pounds, 2 ounces. That?s the heaviest four-day cumulative tournament weight in the history of both the Stren Series and FLW Outdoors as a whole. Guidry?s catch shattered the previous record of 105 pounds, 8 ounces set by David Mauldin of Tomball, Texas, during the 2006 Stren Series tournament on Lake Amistad. In fact, the top three finishers on Falcon all surpassed the previous record. On top of this, it took over 62lbs for 3 days, just to sniff the money in this event.  Imagine catching 20lbs a day for 3 days in a row and head home without even a check....  Pretty crazy!  ...

First Bass Fishing outing of 2008
2008-01-12 00:00:00
Hey all,Finally got back out after my late December trip was foiled by another motorist.  The weather was beautiful for Minnesota in January standards.  For the 6 hours we fished, the temperature hovered between 35 & 40 degrees.  Overall the fishing was solid as well, I did not catch as many fish as I did in my trip in late November, but the overall quality was better.  I am going to let the pictures do most of the talking  Good Start Brushhog with a nice a smallie & I with a 10lb 15oz carp Josh Douglaswith a 3lb 6oz & Ryan Brant with two goodns' Another chunk, along with my biggest 3lbs 3oz, it looks cool with the snow & ice on its tail!I caught several fish on a drop shot Gulp Alive 3 Minnow, but most of the fish came on either a 3" Yum or Berkley Green Pumpkin tube, the biggest was on the Power Tube.My totals: 49 Smallmouth, 3 Rock Bass , 3 CarpOverall 4 guys: 207 smallmouth, 3 carp, 1 walleye, 1 northern, and hand...

Happy New Year!
2008-01-01 00:00:00
Hey All,First of all, I hope you all have a safe & fun new year's eve.    Also many of you are probably itching to get started on a new fishing year.  Over all I had a pretty good year, it almost always can be a little better, but what would I have to shoot for next year if I won every tournament??  LOL!Looking back, I could not have had as good a year as I had if it were not for my sponsors.  First off, I would like to thank my existing sponsors coming into 2007.  It feels good to help and grow companies that are committed to you as you are to them.Tru-TungstenTru-Tungsten jigs and sinkers changed my fishing over the past two years.  It is hard to believe what a difference tungsten makes in feeling your bait and catching fish.  I could go on & on, but the 3/8 Green Pumpkin/Brown Tru-Tungsten jig has won me more money then any other lure in my box in the past two season, hands down!Secret Weapon LuresSecret Weapon Lures...

Late Season Smallmouth Outing Folied
2007-12-23 00:00:00
Disclaimer:  This is a rant/venting post.  Feel free to keep browsing.Got up early to head out to the river for some open water smallmouth fishing this morning.  Halfway there my plan was foiled by some guy without a drivers license or insurance who obviously had now clue how to drive.  He was out of control and side swiped me and pushed me into the middle barricade on I-94.  Some justice served as he was cuffed and stuffed and his car hauled away.So quickly visions of jumbo winter smallies were dashed and now having to get by with one car during the holidays and filing claims for repairs became the reality.  Also even if we get some warm weather during my time off during the holidays, I likely will have no mode of transportation to go fishing I feel better now, Merry Christmas & Best Wished to all!

Dymamite Spawning Bass Article
2007-12-10 00:00:00
I found a really good article, of all places, in Field & Stream magazine.  I never thought they would have a decent bass related article, but I was killing time in a waiting room for a doctor appointment.  I was glad I put my pride aside and flipped through the pages.  I actually thought about taking the magazine when I left, but common sense prevailed.  Another cool thing, there is a copy online, you have to view 13 different pages to read it all, but I guess that is how the pay the bills with advertisement, but I think its worth it.  Here is the link to the online article.  The premise of the article, is one guy scuba dives around spawning females while another guy fishes above, really excellent info.   I think there are a couple key tips, that can help most of us if we are targeting spawning fish in a tournament situation.  I know some of you hate everything about fishing for spawners, if this is you, skip this entry...

Get to Know'em - Fred Roumbanis

Here is a fun little piece from an Ima Mailer that I wanted to share, I had not done a Get to Know'em piece since Derek Remitz.  I plan to to another similar piece on Brent Haimes in the near future as well.Introducing Ima Pro Staffer Fred Roumbanis Hello, I am Fred Roumbanis. I am 28 years old, will be 29 at the end of November. I was born and raised in California and spent my youth on the California Delta and nearby local reservoirs. As kids, my brother and I learned to fish mostly from watching our angler heroes on BASS/ESPN TV tournament shows, including Denny Brauer, Rick Clunn and all the greats. I loved to watch Bill Dance, Hank Parker, Fish Fishburne and every TV show that had anything to do with fishing. At the early age of 8 years old, my grandpa gave me my first rod and reel, a Zebco 33 spincast combo. What's cool is my future father-in-law was an engineer for Zebco at that time and he designed that reel. So I think that's pretty cool that's how I got started wi...

Not Giving Up Yet - Part Two
2007-11-30 00:00:00
As I eluded to in one of my comments, Josh & I did very well in our little excursion to the Mississippi River.  We started fishing sometime after 11am.  As we worked our way to the spot, the bet was set. We decided to bet big fish, and the reward would be dinner.  We also would keep track of numbers for bragging rights, it is just in our competitive nature It started fast & furious, I managed to land 6 smallmouth bass in my first 7 casts.  When we first started, I was using a Green Pumpkin Mizmo tube on a BiteMe Tube Jig head.  I think early on, I was up 10 fish to Josh's 4 and thats when I lost a decent fish right at the bank and soon after that I broke of my tube jig.  So I played around with my mojo rig, and caught several bass on a Baby Ring Fry-Green Pumpkin.  Although during that time period, Josh got up like 17 to 12.  That is when I told him, "numbers are all fine & good, but today its the big fish that pays the bills...

I am refusing to let winter be here yet in Minnesota.  I am going Smallmouth Bass Fishing tomorrow.  My buddy Josh Douglas & I are going to fish the Mississippi River from an undisclosed bank location. So today, I went through my tackle like I had a tournament tomorrow, funny stuff.  Anyways got a couple spinning rods setup with 8lb fluorocarbon and two baitcasters.  I also made up a little smallie box.  Got some 1/0 & 2/0 wide gap hooks, drop shot hooks, hair jigs, tube jigs, scroungers, etc.  Then I sorted through my plastics and grabbed a bunch of grubs, tubes, smallie beavers, & salty sinkers, etc.I also spent some time updating my websites, as well as my MySpace page.  We even are starting to think about getting the Christmas tree setup tonight.I have to get up early and make a bunch of turkey sandwiches from leftovers. Also, Josh & I plan to stop at Cabela's on the way, get some last minutes supplies as wel...

The Bet!
2007-11-23 00:00:00
So here is the back drop.  My buddy Billy Harris and I both qualified for the Bassmaster Weekend Series National Championships on Clarks Hill through our  respective divisions.  If you have read both of our blogs and forums, we both contribute a bit of trash talking and good natured ribbing to each other.  After all, that is what good fishing buddies are for My travel plans to Clarks Hill involved flying to Nashville where Billy lives, we were then going to drive to Hartwell for some fun/pre-practice fishing out of his boat on Saturday.  Then of course we would practice on our own on Clarks Hill before the tournament on Sunday - Tuesday.  Billy being the competitive spirit he is, he set the bet in which we would take out best 5 fish by weight for Saturday on Hartwell.  I set the prize at the winner gets a bait of choice out of the others boat/tackle box.  Not a big prize, but there is a certain amount of humiliation of having another...
Bassmaster Weekend Series National Championship - Days 3
2007-11-23 00:00:00
Well, its moving day.  I find myself in 157th place, top 50 get a check and top 25 fish tomorrow.  My partner Adam Bain from Alabama & I are out boat 108 or something like that.  We arrive at my chosen starting point and there is a nice breeze coming in on it, which I expect would only help.  We work the point hard for about 30 minutes, with cranks, jigs & spinnerbaits, etc.  Nothing happening.  I decide to try the adjacent pockets it the wind blowing on them, figuring there could be some fish pulled up in there.  I quickly catch a 2lb fish on a my Sebile Flatt Shad, not too much longer my partner gets a nicer fish on a spinnerbait, just under 3lbs.  We went back and forth on these two pockets once more each, no more bites. We stop and fish a main lake shoal, looks good, but nothing.  We then fish some rip rap with the wind blowing on it near the HWY 47 bridge.  Finally we make our way into a pocket and I catch keeper #2 on th...

Bassmaster Weekend Series National Championship - Days 1 & 2
2007-11-23 00:00:00
Wednesday - November 14 - Tournament Day 1Day 1 was a beautiful looking day for fishing.  My partner Brian Greenwood from Vermont made it to our starting area in the back of Gray's creek.  Had it all to ourselves, I started throwing my Vixen hoping to draw some fish up and my partner drug a senko behind the boat.  Nothing happening, I then tried a BuzzR Bait, DT6 and an Inchi Wacky Rig, not a bite.  I think we each caught one channel pickerel each.  We then tried some areas in Little Creek, I saw several nice fish cruising in there, but could not elicit a strike from any of them.  I finally broke out my flippin' stick and started dropping a black neon speed craw on a 3/4oz Tru-Tungsten Flippin' weight rigged on a 3/0 BMF Hook.  I switched my flipping rig from braid to 20# Fluorocarbon during the tournament hoping to get some more bites.  I quickly got a 12" keeper on that.  On the way out, my partner caught a small ...

Bassmaster Weekend Series National Championship - Practice
2007-11-23 00:00:00
Hey all,  I am back from a long week of fishing down at Clarks Hill.  I am going to wrap my practice into a single entry for the sake of keeping current.  Saturday - November 10 - Pre-Practice Lake HartwellMy buddy Billy Harris and I fished Hartwell the last day of off limits as we had read & heard that the lake fished similar to that of Clarks Hill and they both had healthy populations of Blueback Herring.  We also decided to have a friendly little tournament.  Weight of each of our best 5 fish, winner gets a bait out of the others boat at the end of the week.  We also wagered a similar bet for the Clarks Hill tournament, highest finisher gets to steal a bait as well.  Well fishing was tough at Hartwell for us, I managed on nice 2.2lb spot on a 3/8oz Tru-Tungsten Green Pumpkin Brown Jig under a dock in about 18ft of water.  Other then that, we each caught a few short spots.  I caught a handful of small spots on a Zappu Inch...

Just in case some of you worried, I am alive Sorry, been awhile since I have sat down & blogged.  Since my last tournament, I have been elbow deep in my "honey do" jar, that will happen when you get a new house.  Lots of stuff to do before I leave for the Bassmaster Weekend Series National Championships on Clarks Hill.Other then that I have been busy sorting tackle and doing other prep work for my upcoming tournament.  Which includes buying some new lures on the internet, as they come in, I will try to get some snapshots up before I leave. One interesting thing, that I came across while doing research for Clarks Hill.  I was reading how Frank Ippoliti recently won the Southern Open on Lake Wheeler.  Turns out he was stroking a Tru-Tungsten Jig along a bluff-wall and all but one of his fish came on the jig.  I am reading more and more on how people are turning to this jig. Also, I recently found this cool underwater video of the Tru-Tungsten jig i...

Well you probably know this by now, unless its your first time to my blog, I will be fishing the Bassmaster Weekend Series National Championship s next week on Clarks Hill Reservoir (a.k.a. J.
