Looking for Basstrix Paddle Tail Tubes?
2007-10-18 19:10:00 Right now the Basstrix Paddle Tail Tube is the hottest thing around and hardly anyone can get their hands on any, I have heard they are going for $20 a pack on eBay right now. If you have not seen them, this is what they look like. Some online retailers carry them, but nearly all of them are backordered and are not taking new orders. I posted some of this info on my Tackle Blog, but this just seemend like too hot of a topic to just post in one place We were in need of a good ol' fashion product review to break up the coverage of all my tourney write ups. I have not used them myself, but have heard tons about them and they sound like the real deal. Recently I have come across a few other baits that look pretty similar and are much easier to get your hands on as well maybe a bit cheaper. Not too different then the original chatterbait, when they were impossible to get, many companies duplicated and in some cases came out with superior baits, so here ... More About: Trix
Mississippi River - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #5 - Day 2- Oct 7
2007-10-15 10:23:00 Better late then never, but here is Day 2 Coming into this tourney I had a plan that if weather would cooperate, I would fish the river south of Wabasha the first day and then fish my Lake Pepin fish on day two. As many of you know, wind can ruin a day bass fishing on big wide open Lake Pepin. So day 1, I caught a good bag from the river and it seemed like the wind would cooperate for day 2, so my partner Paul & I were 4th boat out and we headed up past Lake City.We were all by ourselves when we got to this little rock point. We fished it hard with topwater. I was able to catch two nice keepers on a Yellow Magic. I then hooked a 3lb plus smallie on a bone colored Barely Legal Vixen, but I horsed it a bit near the boat and he got off. About 5 minutes later, I hooked another nice smallie on the vixen, this time I took my time and we put her in the net. We caught a few shorts, then moved to the next area. My partner finally caugh... Mississippi River - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #5 - Day 1- Oct 6
2007-10-11 00:00:00 I did get out and prefish one more day for this tournament, but never got around to blogging about it, maybe because it was so lack luster I would have had two days, but my wonderful wife score great tickets for the Packers / Vikings game, what is a guy to do Quite a bit riding on this tournament, I currently stood 6th in the points for the year, the top 8 qualify for nationals and my margin over the 9th through 15th place was not that great.Anyways, I got down to Wabasha around 3pm, which gave me about 2 hours to run around in the boat look at some water color and make a few casts. In that short time, I was able to confirm that a couple key areas were not too muddy to fish and was able to get a couple rolls on a buzz frog back in a slop area.I drew boat #27 out of 31 boats, total 33 boaters but they were short a few non-boater so a two sets of guys had to go boater / boater. My partner was Pat Picciano, seemed like a good guy. Since I got a late draw... More About: Mississippi , Series , River , Weekend , Tournament
Strike King Sexy Shad!
2007-10-05 00:00:00 I think may bass anglers have been trying to get a hold of the Strike King Pro Series crankbaits in the Sexy Shad color that KVD used to win Guntersville and Grand Lake this year. I was surprised to see in my latest BassProShops catalog, they were advertising the heck of the Sexy Shad in both Strike King Pro-Model Crankbaits and the Red Eye Shad. Then I went online (Basspro.com) to see how much, cause I thought they work great down on the river this fall. Hmmm..... they do not seem to have any in stock, you cannot select the Sexy Shad color, that is kind of a downer. So either, they do not have then yet, or they sold out before I got a good look at my catalog......One other note, congrats to Boyd Duckett on being Ultimate Match Fishing champ, he squeaked by Kelly Jordan as they both had 21lb plus bags on Kentucky Lake. Gopher Bassmasters Fall Classic - Coon Lake - September 23, 2007
2007-09-29 00:00:00 Well its that time of year again, its late September /Early October, time for the 3rd Annual Gopher Bassmasters Fall Classic . This tournament is different then the usual club tournament, for a few reasons:Its our only team tournament, the lake is drawn last minute, so no prefishing. We also try to pick lakes with big fish potential. The first two years, we fished Minnetonka & Medicine lake, neither one produced giant bags like we had hoped when we started the Fall Classic idea. Coon Lake was the lake selected from the proverbial hat for 2007. On a positive note, the Fall Classic has been good to me, as my team has won the first two and I had ideas in my winning the 3rd as Coon Lake is one of my favorites lakes in MN.Its been a few years since I have fished Coon Lake, but I have had my share of success there. I figured we could run and gun until we got on a pattern and I knew the lake well enough to keep it going from there. I dr...
Mississippi River - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #4 - Sept 9th, 20
2007-09-22 00:00:00 Hey all,Been crazy busy, time to get caught up a little. So I drove home all night from Leech to Lakeville thanks to some energy drinks. Slept in, did some stuff around the house and got out on Pool 5 for about 2 hours before the registration meeting, nothing too ground breaking there.I made the decision to run to Pool 5 and try to hit a home run in some pads. It was a tough call, because I had some other good fish and areas as well. I kind of talked myself into because I was kind of tired of consistent high finishes in money tournaments, but no big wins to show for it. I attributed it to fishing to conservatively. So I talked myself to going for a big bag. Long story short, made the run, locked through to Pool 5 and fished those pads for a long time and only managed one 2.5lb+ fish on a 1/2oz Fall Craw Tru-Tungsten jig. My partner did manage to get one fish there as well. We started to run some other areas, but I could not get a... More About: Mississippi , Series , River , Weekend , Sept
Leech Lake MNBF TOC Practice Sept 1-4, 2007
2007-09-18 00:00:00 It would take too long to break down every day of practice in to a separate entry. So I will bundle all the practice into one entry and then each tournament day will get their own entry. And then maybe I will be caught up through my Bass Weekend Series tournament by Friday. This would be the start of 9 straight days of bass fishing I left my house in Lake ville before 5am on Saturday morning, picked up my dad and we launched on Boy Bay. It was a windy first day, but we went right to the spot where I had caught 19lbs last year in a club tournament and my fellow club member Dave Ham was there and so were the bass. We spent the rest of the day checking other areas and looking for new stuff in Boy Bay. The best baits were texas rigged plastics, cane toads, & Stanley Ribbits.Day two I spent in Steamboat area, found some new stuff as well as checked some old stuff. Most of my bites came around reeds that day. Stick'Em Lures Salty Sin... More About: Practice , Leech , Sept
MN Bass Federation Nation TOC - Leech Lake Day 1 - September 6, 2007
2007-09-18 00:00:00 Going into the pairings meeting, I knew I would be using my boat, as I was a guaranteed boater. I ended up drawing boat # 5 the first day and my partners was Noah from Bass Seekers. Based on the wind forecast for the two days and that I was sharing my Boy Bay spot with another club member, I decided to fish my Steamboat fish the first day and save my Boy fish for Day 2.We headed out across the lake and not many of the early boats seem to go the direction we did. We arrived at the first area and I pitched my 1/2oz Black & Blue Jig into he cane grass and as I was letting the trolling motor down, one already had the jig and fish # 1 was in the boat, my 3rd pitch yielded fish #2 as well. My partner soon caught a nice fish as well. I ended up culling before 8am on the first patch of reeds and cane. We hit two more reed patches and one produced a cull for me and the next produced to nice fish for my partner. I also hit some bog areas, but... More About: Nation , Leech , September , Lake
MN Bass Federation Nation TOC - Leech Lake Day 2 - September 7, 2007
2007-09-18 00:00:00 Woke up early to get my batteries figured out and ended swapping my battery for another guy's battery in my club! Thanks a bunch John! Do to change of plans and wind issues, launch was delayed until 7:30am. Because of my fortunate draw on day 1, I was boat #73 toady, which was dead last. My partner & I made the long haul to Boy Bay, we were not in any hurry being last boat out. I get to my starting area that I saved for today and there were two boats already there, one on each end. I went to put my trolling motor down and noticed the head was dangling from the cables on the head. Not the greatest start in the world, after about 10 minutes my partner & I got it pieced & taped back together where it would work.I could feel myself being getting little unnerved by having two boats there and having trolling motor issues two days in a row. Not to mention one of the boats there was my buddy's 1st partner and asked him... More About: Nation , Bass , Leech , September , Lake

2007-09-18 00:00:00 Minnesota's best amateur bass anglers tackled the huge waters of Leech Lake for the Minnesota B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Tournament of Champions (TOC) two-day event. 144 anglers from 30 different clubs competed for the top 12 spots to advance to next year's divisional tournament, which will comprise the best anglers from seven other states: Wisconsin, Indiana, South Dakota, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio. Not only were individual honors at stake but the 30 clubs were completing for a top 6 finish so their club could advance to next year's Bass Club World Championships. Day one went like clockwork as all anglers were on the lake by 7:30 a.m. The perfect weather proved to be an advantage as large bags were brought to the weigh-in stage. One bag weight broke the Federation record for a day's catch; as day one leader Nicholas Gross from Granite City Bassmasters brought in five bass weighing a whopping 21.04 lbs. Mississippi River Pool 4 - Practice Day - August 26th, 2007
2007-09-02 00:00:00 Got on the water around 7:30am, tried a few points on the mouths of some cuts with a few bites but no fish. Then moved to a wing dam, caught a near 3lb smallie right away on topwater as well as a couple largemouth. We then ran some backwater, had a few blow ups and caught some northerns, not real impressed. Went to the next backwater area, caught some solid fish on the black Furbit in the slop.We then ran some other areas, had some boils but no hook-ups. We ended the day on a eel grass line where we did real well on soft plastics, overall, a productive day. Added some areas and eliminated some water. Its the end of the week, I am packing for Leech tonight and leaving very early tomorrow morning, probably no blog entries between now and Sept 10th. I will be fishing the MNBF TOC on Leech and the 4th Weekend Series tournament on Pool s 4 & 5, so two tournaments and 9 straight days of fishing!!!!Tight Lines,RichRichLindgren.com Rich's Bass... Gopher Bassmasters Jr. Tournament - Bald Eagle Lake - August 25, 2007
2007-08-31 00:00:00 I served as a boat captain in one of our Jr. Bass Club tournaments this past Saturday. I believe there was a total of 4 boats and 7 youth anglers. I had only a single youth member, Zach Martens. I had not been on the lake in about 10 years, and Zach had never been on the lake. We decided to start in the slop right next to the access. I let Zach use on of my baitcasters that was spooled up with a braid and had a black Optimum Furbit floating frog on tied on. He had a few bites there and even caught a small keeper on it. We tried the cattails for a bit, but nothing happening. Zach then said he wanted to try some docks. I brought him to some docks that I had caught fish way back when. He started throwing a Watermelon Red Flake Yum Dinger he soon lost one and caught another small keeper. He was then out of dingers, so I dug threw my plastics and let him choose from stick baits that I had in the boat. ... More About: Gopher , August , Lake , Eagle , Tournament
Mississippi River - Pool 5 - Club Tournament #7 - August 18, 2007
2007-08-25 00:00:00 Well, let's just start by saying it was the soggiest tournament that I have participated in since the Weekend Series Regional down at Patoka last October. My partner, Ricky, & I were first off, we went straight to a stretch of pads in the back of a lake. It is where I had not a lot of bites, but they were all big. I threw swim jigs, Black Furbit and a dark colored Gambler Cane toad and managed just one 16" bass on the cane toad in just over an hour. We then went back towards the main river to a slough to fish some channel banks, with grass, wood & rock.My first cast with a junebug swim jig got me a 14.5" fish that I threw back because it was a 'no cull' tournament. I then started throwing a bone colored Yellow Magic popper (I get mine from Basspro.com), caught some short fish then caught a 3.3lb largemouth. I continued throwing that popper for the next hour and caught 10+ fish, none of which I actually put in the well. I... More About: Mississippi , River , Club , Pool , August
Mississippi River - Pool 4 - Club Tournament #8 - August 19, 2007
2007-08-25 00:00:00 Nothing like starting a day with the boat still soaked from the previous day..... It was not overly windy, so Josh& I decided to head about 20 minutes north of Wabasha up Pepin to a spot we had found 3-4 weeks prior to the tournament. We were the only boat out of 7 that went north of Ike's park. We got there, it was peaceful and quiet until the smallies started smashing our topwaters Bass Fishing at its finest!!!I started out with a bone colored Yellow Magic Popper (found at Basspro.com) and Josh was tossing a Parch colored Sammy. We both were catching fish and some keepers. I threw back 5 keepers and Josh threw back 2 or 3 before we even put one in the well. Torturous decisions that no cull tournaments present. I finally switched to a bone colored Barely Legal Vixen and that put a nice largemouth in the boat, kind of a bonus fish here. Josh ended up boating two nice smallies on his Sammy. I also added... World's Greatest Fishing Show?
2007-08-18 00:00:00 So I have seen 3 or maybe 4 episodes of the World's Greatest Fishing Show with Mark Zona. So far, I think I like it. Is it the greatest every, not sure about that, but it is well above average thus far. The pictures of that 8lb smallie out of Eastern basin of Lake Eries were top notch. I really enjoyed the last episode with Bob Cobb, I grew up watching Bassmasters back when it was on The Nashville Network, brought back memories of my dad & I watching Bassmasters in the morning together. When Zona asked Cobb about his 3 top memorable moments, he nailed them.1. Bitter's Lost Classic, where he dropped a keeper in and lost the classic by an ounce2. Fritz Flip, where he fell in lake landing a bass3. Nixon's monster bass on Harris Chain in MegabucksWell, hats off to Zone for capturing those moments on TV this past weekend, it was a great show and it was great to watch ol' Cobb get that big smallie on that old rod!Its refresh...
Mississippi River Pool 5 - Practice Day - August 12th, 2007
2007-08-18 00:00:00 Man, I cannot believe I only got out bass fishing one day this weekend. My partner (Lil' Gin Rickey) and I got out on Pool 5 around 7:30am. I caught two quick short fish on a bone Pop-R along a deep bank in a slough. Fish were jumping and busting all over, some were bass but I think most were rough fish. I then switched to a 1/2 oz Fall Craw Tru-Tungsten jig and caught a pretty quick limit of 2-3lb plus fish, Ricky also caught a handful of fish on a Mojo Rig with several different plastics. It was about 9am, so I wanted to check where I had found some big fish previously.I got back to the pads and I started tossing a floating frog, about 15 minutes later I had a 4.5lb bass in the boat, shortly after that Rick had one just as big on a white cane toad and then a little later I had a big one miss my swim jig. I was pretty excited with the quality, but it was not fast and furious by any means. We spent a few hours trying to... More About: Mississippi , Practice , River , August
Got some new tackle...
2007-08-11 00:00:00 You can never have too much bass fishing stuff, right?Well here are a few things that I have picked up lately.Bought some more Vixens, because I have been wearing them out on this bait for the last year or so. I thought I would get some more colors and also wanted to get that Baby Bone colored one on the bottom, because I think it may really light up the smallies next weekend on the Mississippi. Also, these baits walk like not other, its falling over easy to walk the dog with these I have been doing more & more flippin' lately and with the river and Leech on the horizon, I needed to stock up a bit. These BMF Hooks (Bad Mother Flippin') are unbelievable when it comes to flippin', caught some really good fish practicing on Pokegama when I teamed these up with Tru-Tungsten Flippin' Weights. Just look at the bite these hooks have and they are heavy duty, no worries about straightening hooks on the set. Also, these BMF Barbs help ... More About: Some
Pokegama - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #3 - August 5th, 2007
2007-08-08 00:00:00 I arrived to prefish around 3pm on Friday afternoon, found some decent smallies deep and a few good largies in the reeds. Saturday was much of the same, not much for size except for a few fish I was able to flip up on soft plastics in the river area of the lake. I did not have near the fish that I had going last year for this tournament. I drew boat #32 and had a pretty solid non-boater, he ended up being a lot of fun to fish with.I decided to fish some reeds that I thought would produce a solid 10-12lbs, but I ended up wasting over an hour fishing reeds, we each had a couple fish in the well when we left, but nothing special. The first weedline that I pulled up on, we had a near double and I soon caught a nice smallie and largemouth on a drop shot with a little 4" Chompers worm in a watermelon flake color paired with a 1/4oz Tru-Tungsten drop shot weight and a drop length of about 16". A northern bit of my drop shot weight so I switched to my... More About: Series , Weekend , August , Tournament , Mast

Mississippi River Pools 4 & 5 - Practice Day - July 29th, 2007
2007-08-03 00:00:00 Well Tim & I started out at about 5:45am, it was a beautiful quiet misty morning in Wabasha for some bass fishing. We started off fishing some backwater around Wabasha and caught some solid fish on Frogs and buzz toads. Tim also caught a couple dandy Dog Fish (bowfins). Targeting mainly duck weed & slop. We drove around and looked at some other stuff, then headed south for Pool 5.We hit one small wing dam, I caught a 13" smallie on a Pop-R, and we also got a few small largies on other baits. The next point, I made one cast and caught a nice largemouth on my popper and had a bigger on following it, then Tim launched his Sammy into the trees and we scared the fish getting it We worked a slop pocket in from that, caught a couple bass and large sized northern. We then hit the point on the way back out and caught sever bass on swim jigs & soft plastics. I also showed Tim the power of the Mojo Rig......We then fished a cut ... 2007-08-01 00:00:00 Well, I got a handful of tournaments coming up on Pool s 4 & 5, and I never really have fished them much, so this is the weekend where I start putting some time in. I have two club tournaments on Aug 18 & 19 on Pool 4 one day and Pool 5 the other, then there is a Weekend Series tournament on Sept 9th out of Wabasha as well as a two day Weekend Series out of Wabasha in early October. My club partner for Pool 4, Josh Douglas, and I took his Ranger out on Saturday morning and launched out of Colvill Park just south of Red Wing. The second spot we stopped at, I caught two nice chunky largemouth on a mojo rigged super fluke in an Arkansas Shad color. Josh also caught a keeper on a Baby Brush Hog. We worked our way down Pepin and found some nice smallmouth on some rocks & grass. We initially caught them on a Bone Pop-R and a Perch Sammy. It was just good plain fun whacking some smallies in the 3lb + class on topwater I also caught a nice ... More About: Mississippi , Practice , River , July
St. Croix River - Club Tournament #6 - July 15, 2007
2007-07-26 00:00:00 Time to get caught up a little big......I came into this tournament feeling pretty confident and hoping to make a dent in the deficit from 1st place in the club standings. My optimism & confidence train wrecked into two keepers.I ran up to Afton, only to arrive simultaneously with another club member. Turns out the fish never really went on that spot. My partner Art & I started working the adjacent weed beds and edges. I started catching some short fish on a white swim jig and then missed a few others that felt bigger because I could not catch up to them before they spit the jig ( I have since ordered a new Curado DHSV Reel ) We then followed the weed edge to some docks, I quickly caught a short smallmouth and largemouth off the first dock and missed another fish. Art then caught a nice keeper largemouth on the inside weed edge on a 4" Fork Craw Green Pumpkin that he texas rigged with a 1/8oz screw lock weight. I then caug... Whitefish Chain - Practice Days - July 13-14, 2006
2007-07-26 00:00:00 Well, due to me missing half my tournament last week because of work related travel, I got to leave early on Friday. Drove up to Fifty Lakes, messed with my tackle and spooled some new reels I recently got and was on the lake a little before 4pm. The campground was just minutes from Big Trout, so I decided to practice there for a couple hours since it was so late in the day. I started on a sharp point that I had caught good fish in a previous State TOC, plus I really wanted to try out my brand new Crucial Drop Shot Rod that was paired with a 2500 Stradic Mg (What a SWEET Setup!). I drop shotted a few dinks & small keepers on a little 4" Chompers worm. Then I checked a few docks with a Paca Craw, plenty of fish, but not great size. Then I checked a weed turn, small keepers on a 4" jig worm. I then found a hump that I started fan casting with a Parrot DT6 and it was unbelievable to say the least. 2-3.5lb fish and at on... Whitefish Chain - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #2 - July 15th, 200
2007-07-26 00:00:00 Well, in my last post I was chomping at the bit to get out in the morning and whack them bass on that hump. So my partner & I take off 5th boat with a hitch, get to the spot first. Its a little too windy there for topwater, so I grab my trusty Parrot DT6 and cast & cast & cast...... I feel something slap it really hard but no hooks..... then the rod loads, just a northern. Well I fished it hard, with my DT6, lipless crank, Lucky Craft Pointer, etc..... My partner caught two small keepers on a little white spinnerbait and I caught a small keeper on a 8" Redbug Lake Fork worm on a jig head. Also, after awhile my Loomis rods were really buzzing with the "energy" in the air, I even felt a few shocks through my rod blank, so we moved a little closer to the bank. I started working some docks that I had prefished with my 3/8oz Green Pumpkin/Brown Tru-Tungsten jig & a 1/2oz fall craw version as well. I whacked them... Big Marine Lake - Club Tournament #5 - July 14, 2007
2007-07-20 00:00:00 It will not take long to cover this tourney because I only fished half the tournament, but that is all I needed to get 2nd place I guess.... I was traveling for work on Friday and due to mechanical issues with Delta Airlines, I got to spend the night in NYC and was not able to get to my tournament until 10am at Big Mari ne while everyone else started fishing at 6am.Fortunately I was fishing alone, so I did not have a partner that was effected by my misfortune. I got to the lake, picked up my 3/8oz Green PumpkinT ru-Tungsten jig and targeted shallow cover. I quickly caught a nice keeper out of a piece of brush in some dollar pads and then started methodically working docks around the lake. I managed to catch 9 keepers and several short fish. I did pick one up on a Sweet Beaver, but he was quickly culled, so all my weigh fish were on my go to jig. It turns out most people struggled in my club that day, not very many limits. My final weight... More About: Club , July , Lake

2007-07-13 00:00:00 Wow, this is great, I actually got out on the water for this club tournament two different days, once for about 3hrs on Memorial day and now about 5 hours this past Sunday. Mr. Veech and I got out on the water a little before 7am. Nothing really happened topwater wise for us and the first 3-4 spots we hit produced nothing. We then worked our way all the way down to the bottom of the St. Croix just so we could see what it looked like, we did manage to find a few fish down there on a white super fluke. On the weigh back up, we caught a keeper on the west side on some chunk rock bank. We then rode all the way up to the Afton area and found a sand bar with some rocks on it and few other areas. We even found some shallow grass, wood and rocks that were able to pluck some nice largemouths with a swim jig & tube. All in all, it was kind of hit and miss, we did find some good areas with good quality fish, which will be key as we are fishing a no-cull t... More About: Practice
Lake Marion - Pan-O-Prog Days Tournament - July 7th, 2007
2007-07-10 00:00:00 Forecast was to be very hot and little wind, it lived up to the prediction for heat but with less wind. My partner Ryan drew boat #22 out of 40 for us. We decided to start deep and make adjustments from their. There were two boats positioning themselves on the deeper hard bottom area of where we wanted to start so we went straight for the inside turn that had some really healthy coontail clumps. We fished around for about 45 minutes without a bite, we then went out on the edge of the two other boats and I was able to boat a nice 3lb fish on a Bluegill DT10. I also had another bite on a C-Rig. We then dashed into this the inside turn one more time and I immediately loaded the rod up on a 4lb fish that sucked down my ever reliable 3/8oz Green Pumpkin/Brown Tru-Tungsten jig. We only had two fish in the well after 90 minutes but they were both nice fish. After no more bites there we decided to try some shallower water. We started runni... Pan-O-Prog Weekend Preview
2007-07-07 00:00:00 Well, almost time to jet out of work and get ready for some bass fishing this weekend. Tomorrow Ryan & I try to take Lake Marion by storm and keep Shawn Frame & Jerry Hawke from going back to back to back. We have not been out but one evening to practice and that was a couple weeks ago. Let's hope my fish on my hard bottom spot go this year or we are going to really have to scramble.
