Chisago Lake - Club Tournament #4 - June 24, 2007
2007-06-28 00:00:00
Well, this tournament got off to a better start because I made it on time   This tournament our club decided to fish as a hole tournament, 5 holes, you draw a start position and rotate every 75 minutes and then 75 minutes of happy hour at the end.  I was hoping to draw holes 1 or 3 first, because those are really the only 2 holes I have any decent spots in.  My partner Chong drew hole #2 and going towards 3,4,5 for our rotation.  Also, Chisago is a immediate catch & release lake, so we are doing a paper tournament and then converting length to weight.Chong had actually done a little prefishing, so we started in a slop corner that he had and I caught a quick fish on my Vixen, and one on a frog.  One at 13.75" & the other 14.375", not the size fish you need on this lake, but a start.  We kept on the move hopping around, trying to find some better fish and just caught a couple shorts. On to hole #3, went to my 2nd favorite spot on the lake, no good ...

2007-06-27 00:00:00
A little late, but I have been really busy.  Ryan & I got out a bit earlier on Thursday night last week.  We started out by poking around on a hard bottom spot with a Fantasy Football jig, no takers.  We then moved in and found some nice 3lb fish on an adjacent inside turn.  Ryan caught his on a Sweet Beaver on a Title Shot jig and I got mine on a Yum Craw Papi rigged on a straight shank tied with a snell knot and a  3/8oz Denny Brauer Flippin' Weight. We hopped around trying some different things the rest of the night, caught 8 or 9 fish, but nothing over about 2.5lbs.Hats off to KVD as the only angler to win two Elite Series events in a single season so far.  Sounds like he pretty much cranked his way to the victory on Grand with a Strike King Series 5 & 6 Crankbaits in a new color called "Sexy Shad" that should be available for the masses very soon.  I like the sounds of it Also, it was another Jekyll & Hyde weekend in my club tourna...

Got back from Italy last night, good to be back in the good ol' USA!  Did not get to do any bass fishing done over in Italy.  Although, I had got a hold of fellow BASS Federation Nation members over there, just ran out of time Plan to get out on Lake Marion a couple nights this week to start practicing for the Pan-o-Prog tournament.  Look for updates on that this week, things are very busy after being off work for 9 days.RichRichLindgren.com Rich's Bassin' Forum Bass Fishing Tackle Blog If you enjoy this Blog, consider making a PayPal donation to help keep it going. Lake Marion Evening Outing
2007-06-23 00:00:00
So my Pan-O-Prog partner Ryan & I got out for about 2.5 hours last night on Lake Mari on in Lakeville.  We decided to look for some new shallow water / slop areas to go with some of our deep water stuff that we fished last year.  We tied on frogs, buzz toads and flipping rigs and worked the shallow pads & weed mats.  We managed to catch 3 bass all around 2lbs and missed a couple more.  They all came on black floating frogs.Nothing to write home about, but it was good to be out bass fishing again after being in Europe.  Also, while I was gone, we climbed to 39 email subscribers, thanks to all you new subscribers!Another note, did you see the 2008 Bassmasters Schedule? Le Homme Dieu Chain - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #1 - June 3rd,
2007-06-08 00:00:00
Due to time constrains, I am going to combo my practice in with the tournament blog entry......I got on the lake around 6:30pm Friday night and started checking some shallow areas that have produced for me in the past, some shallow cabbage, reeds & docks on Le Homme Dieu.  I probably caught 10-15 fish, mostly on a white & chart chatterbait and a tx rigged Sweet Beaver.  Most of them were small and barely keepers.  I did have one good bite under a dock that felt heavy, I pulled on the fish and did not set.  It was good just to get out and do a little bass fishing on Friday night, more serious practice tomorrow.I got out around 7:30am Saturday morning, started out fishing a deep spot in LHD that I milked during last year's event, and only caught a few shorts.  I then hopped around to a few other deep spots and caught some keepers but nothing of much quality.  So then I went to check some areas in Carlos that I had never fished before.  ...

St. Croix Pre-Practice & Catching Up
2007-06-06 00:00:00
Things have been super busy, anyways my father and I were out on the St. Croix on Memorial Day from about 8 - Noon and launched out of St. Croix Bluffs park.  I caught a smallmouth on my very first cast off a sandbar on a LC Sammy and my dad also got one on his first cast with a drop shot.  The long and short of it is that we did not find any areas that did not have bass, caught close to 25 and about 5-6 of them were above the 14" keeper range. We caught fish on topwater, cranks & plastics.  Most of my fish came on a Watermelon / Green Pumpkin Sweet Beaver texas rigged with 1/8oz. Tru-Tungsten sinker, force bead & smart peg shown below.  The tournament is not until July 15th, so lots can change, but it was good to see the water. On another note, I took 13th out of 65 in the Weekend Series up on Le Homme Dieu chain of lakes, which was the last money spot   I hope to blog about my practice & tournament in more detail before I leav...

2008 Bassmaster Classic has Carolina on it's Mind
2007-06-02 00:00:00
A recent announcement from BASS.....  The Super Bowl of bass fishing will be held in February of 2008 on Lake Hartwell near Greenville, SC.  I had my bets on Georgia, but I guess I was wrong....See full release below: CELEBRATION, Fla. -- Recently named as one of Southern Living's three favorite cities, Greenville, S.C., will host the 2008 Bassmaster Classic , Feb. 22-24, in its downtown region. This marks the second time that bass fishing's premier event will be staged in South Carolina , with the first held in 1973 in McCormick on Clarks Hill Lake, site of a 2007 Bassmaster Elite Series event. In February, Classic competitors will fish on 56,000-acre Lake Hartwell, site of three previous BASS tournaments. The fishery, which features 962 miles of shoreline, gave up a winning three-day tournament weight of 42 pounds, 13 ounces to Georgia's Tony Couch in a 1998 Bassmaster Invitational. Bassmaster Elite Series angler Gerald Swindle of Alabama finished second in that event ...

Bass Opener on Minnetonka
2007-05-30 00:00:00
Well, the plan was to hang sheet rock all weekend, but my buddies inspection did not pass, so I quickly made plans to hit the water to do some bass fishing Couple of my fellow Gopher club members are fishing the Denny's tournament today and had invited me to go prefishing with them, so on Saturday morning I hopped into the Ranger with the Brant Boys.  I started the morning tossing a 6" Optimum suspending swimbait over the milfoil & cabbage while they fished docks.  I had a good fish on for a split second, but never got to see it, not sure if it was a muskie, bass or pike.We fished everything from 1ft to 15ft, our best fish came relatively shallow on inside weedlines, throwing soft plastics and finesse jigs tipped with smallie beavers.  I caught most of my fish pitchin' a regular Watermelon Green Pumpkin Sweet Beaver rigged with a color matched 1/8oz. Tru-Tungsten sinker, force bead & smart peg. Based on what I saw, I would say that&n...

Big & Little Trade Lakes - Club Tournament #2 - May 20,2007
2007-05-24 00:00:00
As I sat in the boat rigging up the night before the tournament, I decided that I needed to fish deeper, so my partner (Sport) and I agreed we would search for fish on the adjacent drops to where we saw and caught the best fish the previous weekend.  I tied on a 3/8oz Green Pumpkin/Brown Tru-Tungsten jig the night before and told myself that I was going to put it to use tomorrow. We were boat #1, so we cruised over to the flat where we saw fish last weekend, the wind was blowing in so we spent a few minutes throwing cranks & chatterbaits.  After a few minutes, we worked our way to the edge of the spring curly cabbage and Sport dropped a jig down into 8ft and caught a keeper just like that.  I quickly grabbed my jig and hopped up front to hold the boat and a few pitches later caught a 3lb bass.  Things were definitely looking up.  We continued down the edge and I busted a 14.75" keeper and thought about tossing him back, but I didn't.  Spo...

Big Wood Lake - Club Tournament #1 - May 19, 2007
2007-05-24 00:00:00
Let's just start out by saying, I have had worse tournaments, but not many that I can recall.  Neither Frank or myself spent much time practicing for this tournament, so we started in a place that I did well last time the club fished here and one of the few spots I checked the previous weekend.  We started in a shallow pad bay that a lot of lily pad roots which almost all of them were holding fish the previous weekend.  We each made a few casts with reaction baits and I quickly switched to a weightless ring fry. I started catching bass immediately, but none that exceeded the 14" minimum.  About 15 minutes later I caught a 14 - 1/8" keeper, I thought about it for a moment and tossed it back.  These first two club tournaments are both "no cull" tournaments, so once it goes into your livewell, there is stays, no upgrading.  My logic was, that I wanted to win the tournament and I was fairly confident that I would catch bigger fish, after all that was about...

Wood & Trade Practice Day
2007-05-18 00:00:00
Unlike previous years, I only made it to WI to practice one day for my first two club tournaments, so Sport & I split are day between the lakes.  We spent about the first 5 hours on Trade & less then 2 hours on Wood .  We got out around 8am on to Trade.  We jumped around and fished a bunch of different areas in both Big & Little Trade lakes.  Sport struck quickly with his new hand poured stick bait (senko) that he poured at home this winter while the rest of us were at the office I went on to catch several fish in a row before Sport responded with another fish.  The water temp was around 60 when we started the day and many smaller bays had much warmer water.  In total between the two lakes, I caught 16 bass, 5 keepers and Sport caught 3 keepers total.  He mentioned something about quality over quantity.  The majority of my fish came on a baby ring fry, pic below.  I rigged it weightless with just a bead or two in front held in ...

Well, unfortunately I was not ready to head to WI and get any additional practice in, but on a positive note I was able to get my boat out for this spring's maiden voyage.   I headed over to Marion which is just a few minutes from my house & the best part was she ran great, from the main motor to the electronics to the trolling motor.  It was good to test out my new Stay'n Charge system as well.I did do a little casting for notherns, casting both a crawdad XCalibur xr50 Lipless crank and DT6.    Ended up catching two nice bass, the biggest being a solid 3lb bass in about 8ft of water on a weed edge, she totally tagged the DT6.  The water was in the mid to upper 60's every where I went.  Only was out for about 2 hrs, most of that driving the big engine, then I headed home to grill steaks for my parents.RichRichLindgren.com Rich's Bassin' Forum Bass Fishing Tackle Blog If you enjoy this Blog, consider making a P...

MN Fishing Opener is Here
2007-05-12 00:00:00
That means its time for me to head to WI and do some bass fishing.  I can honestly say, I do not think I have ever fished in MN on the MN opener.....Tomorrow Sport (fellow Gopher club member) & I are heading to Grantsburg, WI to spend a couple hours on each of two lakes that I have tournaments on May 19-20.  I have fished both lakes before in club tournaments and have done well, but I feel the need to get over there and see what stage the lake is in so I can have a clue where to start come race day.Should be fun, we are having great weather so I expect the fishing to be good.  The two lakes are Big Wood Lake and Big & Little Trade lakes.  I expect we will do a lot more driving around and looking rather then fishing.Sunday, I plan to get my boat out on a local lake in Lakeville to make sure everything is firing on all cylinders   I am chomping at the bit, because I have not been on the water since my trip to Amistad.  I really intended ...

First an Apology for no entries of late, I could give you lots of good excuses but I will not bore you.Clarks Hills a.k.a J. Strom Thurmond LakeWinner - Mike McClellandHere is how he did it: McClelland said he fished "extremely shallow" water. "I never caught a good fish in water deeper than 4 feet. They were all very shallow places, but they did have deep water close to them. They were all clay points with scattered rock mixed in. That was the key." He added that "99% of them were post-spawn fish, but they weren't in an area they should be in. The points they were on were very susceptible to wind and weather. They were waiting on the blueback to show up. "I think that's the reason the jig worked so well. They weren't schooling yet on the blueback. They were up there trying to find something to eat, and that 1/2-ounce football jig was the perfect morsel." Technique Notes A football-head jig, by design, is meant to catch on rocks. About how he worked his jig, McClelland said: "I...

Monday Bass Fishing Randomness April 23rd, 2007
2007-04-23 14:44:00
I think Monday Bass Fishing Randomness could be a regular feature....Let's start by congratulating Mike McClelland on running down Chris Lane on the final day at Clarks Hills Reservoir.  Sounds like Mike's Jewel jig strikes again, to give him his second win in as many years.  Also, of note Derek Remitz aka the Wolverine or Next Big Thing turns in another solid Top 5 and anchors my fantasy team when the likes of Steve Kennedy & KVD let me down a little this week.  On the flip side, consistency of Skeet Reese and the late addition of Casey Ashley helped me maintain a 13th best overall in the nation, as well as close the point margin to #1 I have decided to leave my roster as is for Guntersville, my top 4 guys are & have been studs and I do not see any better options then Mr. Ashley for his $ value, plus he is supposed to be a damn good singer. I want to apologize for not having any posts of late, but work schedule and trying to get our house ready to sell has kept me swamped    Give me a holla, if you know of anyone looking for a home in Lakeville....Hopefully once we are up on the market, I can get back to my routine, plus WI bass opener is only about 18 days away.  I was hoping to get to the river for some bass fishing in April sometime, but that is not looking good right now.  I feel bad for my boat, it keeps looking at me with a sad face wonder when we are going out this spring. On another note, had a couple minutes to freshen up my main site (RichLindgren.com), got a new header on all the pages with some help from Rick over at AIG Outdoors, (Thanks, Rick), and also updated some pics and other info.  Let me know if you like the changes. In case you missed, the Toyota Texas Bass Classic was this past weekend on Lake Fork, TX.  It was put on by the PAA, looked like a great event, di...
Breaking Down Clear Lake Elite Series
2007-04-10 00:00:00
Swimbaits were a bigh part for almost all of the Top 12, much of that is probably due to the large bass and the hitch, which is a minnow that's endemic to central California and looks similar to a golden shiner. It can reach a length of 14 inches. There was a point during the first day of practice for the Clear Lake Bassmaster Elite Series when Steve Kennedy was convinced that California's largest natural body of water harbored no bass under 4 pounds. He started out throwing a swimbait, and it took him awhile to catch anything that didn't meet that standard.  He eventually discovered that 3s - and even 2s - did swim there, and he was forced to bring a couple in that class to the scales on day 1. But over the final 3 days, his average weigh-in fish went nearly 7 pounds. The Alabamian caught 122-14 to set a new BASS total-weight record en route to his first Elite Series victory. He overtook 3-day leader Greg Gutierrez of California with a 32-10 stringer on the final day....

Clear Lake Rewrites the Bass Fishing Record Books
2007-04-03 00:00:00
Man oh Man, the tournament that just concluded a few minutes ago was probably the greatest in B.A.S.S.'s long history.  Skeet Reese trumped Preston Clark's record from last year with a giant 4 day total of 117-6!  That was short lived fame, because the very next angler Steve Kennedy blew him out of the water with 122-14, nearly 7lbs heavier then what Clark could muster at Santee Cooper last April.   Believe it or not, that is the 3rd time Kennedy has reached the century club in BASS tournaments!  It was unbelievable watching it unfold on the live internet weigh-in.  Kennedy averaged over a 6lb bass for 4 days straight and told stories of a 9lb Goliath that he had to turn loose today because it was hooked on the outside of the mouth, not too shabby for a guy that says he never threw a swimait before practice at Amistad in early March.  It is borderline disturbing how good the bass fishing was this week at Clark Lake.  G-man caught a...

The weights were off the charts yesterday at Clear Lake from Top to Bottom.  Early reports from today suggest it could be even better today.  BassZone.com has a Blog that updates throughout the day and a live on water chat room.  Great source of info and then at 5pm Central go to Bassmaster.com to watch the live weigh-ins, you should see some giant bags.  Word is that Greg Gutierrez has over 30lbs again today.  The one disappointment was Derek Remitz right near the bottom with only 13lbs, but I would expect for him to make a charge today, my fantasy team needs him to Also sounds like there is a sight bite at Tennessee's Ft. I told you a few posts ago, that I would find out how Trevor Rogge caught his fish to take 2nd in his first ever BASS Open event.Prefishing Trevor covered water from 1ft to 30ft. The only place he was able to locate females was in 1-2ft swimming a jig in the back of creeks. He located about 4 good creeks that had at least one 4 lb plus fish in them. The problem was finding good numbers of keeper bass.  "Catching a limit I felt would be hard because I was searching most of my day. I caught some smallies down by the dam on the last day of practice but catching 5 would be challenging and many were only 2 pounds or less" said Rogge. The place Trevor ended up fishing was in the back of Walnut Creek where he felt was the only place that had numerous fish. According to Trevor "I caught a 4 pounder prefishing and saw another 2 in a short amount of time. I never thought it had almost 30 quality bass in such a small area". The first day had a huge fog d...

MN anglers continue to have success

Champlain Park's own Trevor Rogge nearly pulled off a win in his first ever BASS Open event yesterday.  He fished the Central Open even on Lake Texoma and after leading on Day 2, he could not quite hold on and Texas angler Brian Clark over took him and Trevor finished 2nd.  I am not sure how he caught them, but I intend to follow up with him to see how he did it.Regardless, this is a great start to the Open season and Trevor has a great shot to be in contention at the end of the year to qualify for the Classic and Elite Series for 2008.  In the mean time, check out Trevor's MySpace Page.RichRichLindgren.com Rich's Bassin' Forum Bass Fishing Tackle Blog If you enjoy this Blog, consider making a PayPal donation to help keep it going. Amistad Top 5 Patterns 2007
2007-03-20 00:00:00
This report on final pattern is a little late, but oh well. The bass in deep, clear and relatively cool Lake Amistad never turned the corner that was the spawn. Sure, a few bed-fish were found here and there, but nearly everyone in the final Top 12 targeted staging fish inside or immediately adjacent to spawning coves. Winner Derek Remitz, a rookie, took a little different tack. Of the three options available - spawning fish, staging fish, and early pre-spawn fish - he chose the latter. His fish were just coming out of their winter pattern and beginning to stage out deep in the main lake. Photo: ESPN Outdoors It was the right choice. Across 4 days, when others in the field struggled to stay consistent, he continued to improve. On day 4, he whacked 31-06 - his biggest sack of the tournament - and spanked 2nd-place Mike Iaconelli by nearly 8 pounds.  Not bad for a MN Sod Farmer And he beat 12th-place finisher John Murray by a massive 33 1/2-pound margin. He threw a jig...

Amistad Day 2 & 3 as a Co-Angler
2007-03-16 00:00:00
I spent the night getting ready for fishing with Takahiro by redoing my rods so I could have more reaction baits tied on.  We started in the Black Brush area fishing a tree line/channel edge with DD22's.   We each caught one small keeper on the crank. The Top Crank is what Omori used, bottom is the Crank I caught my fishWe ran to several more spots and caught nothing throwing cranks, by this time I started to mix in a Jerkbait and trying to fish my finesse carolina wacky rig, but it was tough to do so when he was fishing cranks and moving the boat so much.My wacky rig was a weedless gamakutsu hook and then a 3/16oz Tru-Tungsten sinker pegged about 24" up I ended up picking up my 2nd keeper on the wacky rig throwing out the opposite side of the boat.  We continued to hop and would move shallow to deep and back and forth.  It was obvious he was scrambling because his main pattern was not producing.  He even tried looking for spawners some. ...
