World Cup chief braced for Windies exit
2007-04-09 15:08:00 Scenes such as this have not been uncommon all throughout this edition of the World Cup World Cup organisers, already reeling from the shock exits of crowd-pullers India and Pakistan, are confident the 2007 tournament will survive the West Indie s' expected elimination, AFP reports. Chris Dehring, the World Cup chief executive, said the local committees in the Caribbean will have to be resolute if the hosts, who have lost all three of their Super Eights matches, fail to make the semi-finals. That would have a further disastrous effect on crowd figures which been poor throughout the competition with many locals complaining they have been priced out of the stadiums. Other fans are furious over expensive park-and-ride schemes, fussy security and the refusal to allow spectators right of re-entry into the grounds. "It [a West Indies exit] would be devastating for all the hearts of the Caribbean but we can still put on a good tournament," Dehring told the BBC's Test Match Special."We can... Sound the trumpets! Instruments are allowed!
2007-04-09 14:50:00 World Cup organisers have finally relaxed their ban on musical instruments and will allow them from Saturday's match between Bangladesh and South Africa. Soulless venues over the first half of the tournament have forced the authorities to ditch the regulation in the hope of regaining the usual sounds of the Caribbean crowds. Spectators will be able to take conch shells, horns, drums and trumpets into the ground at Guyana, Reuters reported. "Safety must be paramount but we do want everyone to watch cricket in a festive and lively atmosphere," the World Cup chief executive Chris Dehring said. "We just ask that they be mindful of the comfort of other spectators around them and, of course, of the players on the field."RSS Feeds Submission Directory More About: Pets , Instruments , Men , Sound , Instrument
Fluke no more
2007-04-09 14:49:00 Bangladesh fans take to the streets... a familiar sight during this World Cup Bangladesh + win = Frenzy. Emergency rule or not, thousands thronged the streets to celebrate Bangladesh's 67-run win against South Africa at Guyana, and the police were kind enough to allow the fans let their hair down well into the wee hours of the morning. According to an AFP report, at least 3000 marched through Dhaka's main square, and the sound of firecrackers and fire horns filled the air. The emergency rule which took effect in January, restricted public rallies, but in the glorious world of sport, exceptions can be made. "We are now on top of the world," exclaimed Waji Ullah, a student at Dhaka University. "It is our biggest victory in the World Cup. [Mohammad] Ashraful was magnificent. So were all the bowlers." Helal Uddin, a local police chief, added, ""They were dancing wildly, cheering and waving Bangladesh flags and chanting patriotic slogans. Some wrapped their heads with national flags.... Free tickets at last ... but still too late
2007-04-08 17:59:00 The World Cup is coming in for some flak about its (lack of) organization, so here's a heartwarming tale, or so you would think. For the England and Sri Lanka thriller on Wednesday, the Local Organizing Committee announced that they were offering Antiguan and Barbadian residents free entry to the match. The offer was for two tickets per person and aimed to redress the inflated ticket pricings that had priced the locals out of the market, in a bid to fill up the stands. So far, so good. The only problem was the announcement came half-way through the match, too late for most to head on down. Our man on the spot, Andrew Miller, rang the committee to find out whether this grand gesture of free entry was going to be repeated for England against Australia on Sunday, also at Guyana. Apparently not. "For the last three games we have been distributing free tickets to youth clubs and church organisations to pack the stands with young people," .. clearly. As I noted, with even a hint o... More About: Free , Last , Tickets , Stil , Still
Pak fans force suspension of WorldCup ad campaigns
2007-04-08 17:56:00 A leading Pakistan bank has suspended a high-profile publicity campaign featuring Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi after billboards and posters were defaced in Karachi. Habib Bank, which employs several other top players, launched the campaign with big billboards, posters and commercials on television to coincide with the World Cup. Pakistan were eliminated in the first round of the World Cup after losing to West Indies and debutants Ireland."We decided to suspend this campaign because of the prevailing mood and after some of our billboards and posters were defaced," Abdul Raquib, a senior bank official told The News. Pakistan players had to face angry fans who have burnt their effigies and taken out mock processions to mourn the World Cup debacle.Afridi said people had a right to be upset with the team. "We played badly in the World Cup. But there must be a limit to venting their anger," he said. The angry reaction of fans also led to a multinational soft drinks company dumping a campa... Desperate times for West Indies
2007-04-04 00:52:00 Desperate times for West Indie s Apr 03, 2007 By Cricketguru Dissappointed West Indies fans watch the Sri Lanka victory over West Indies in World Cup Super-Eights match at Guyana National Stadium in Georgetown 01 April 2007. Fans and former cricketers are fast losing faith in Brian Lara's West Indians, who are facing an early exit from the World Cup after three successive defeats in the Super Eights. GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AFP) - Fans and former cricketers are fast losing faith in Brian Lara's West Indians, who are facing an early exit from the World Cup after three successive defeats in the Super Eights. The West Indies' semi-final hopes were severely jolted when they crashed to a 113-run defeat against Sri Lanka in front of their supporters at the Providence Stadium here on Sunday. They were always considered a dangerous side because of their unpredictability, but have looked only predictable in their last three matches against defending champions Australia, ... They came, they saw, they collapsed!
2007-04-04 00:47:00 They came, they saw, they collapsed! by Cricketguru Apr 03, 2007 It was a must win situation for India to advance to the next leg. The bout was with the island neighbors who had been terrific through the tournament thus far posting huge scores. Their batting was peaking at just the right time and the bowling was simply following suite. India had an uphill task of going up against the odds in a do or die tie, something that they seldom came out successfully from. Lankans were put into bat on the day the ball had a certain say, at least in the first session. The dreaded opener who had tormented the Indians since long, with his impeccable timing and power hitting, was removed early and a majority of the runs from there on were from mis-timed boundaries and lucky edges. However, the Lankan batsmen dug in, refusing to be guiled by the swaying charms of the moving ball, even when wickets seem to be tumbling at regular intervals. For once, what was once considered ... Jayasuriya equals Sachin's record for most ODIs
2007-04-04 00:43:00 Jayasuriya equals Sachin 's record for most ODIs by Cricketguru Apr 03, 2007 On April fools day, West Indies cricket team made fools of themselves by putting up their worst performance ever on the cricket field in a World Cup match. While not only hosting the tournament in their own backyard but also in front of a record crowd at Providence Stadium, Guyana they were completely outplayed by Sri Lanka in every department of the game. They lacked enthusiasm on the field while bowling, were completely out of sorts with their sloppy fielding and were terribly short of providing any kind of excitement to the spectators while chasing second consecutive total of 300 plus after inserting the opposition to bat first. Defeat is one thing but the manner in which they fought is another. Teams can emerge successful even after losing a match like their counterparts did couple of days back against South Africa. In the end they lost the game by 113 runs to Sri Lanka, ten runs mor... More About: Suri , Equals , Most , Equal
Bangladesh brought down to earth by Kiwis
2007-04-04 00:39:00 Bang ladesh brought down to earth by Kiwis By Cricketguru Bangladesh Cricket team was brought down to earth from their euphoria of entering into the Super 8 stage by New Zealand. The warm-up game loss to the minnows may have actually aided the Kiwis in preparing themselves for this game and giving the due respect to the Bangladesh team and playing according to a plan and executing it with clinical precision. Like a true professional side they did not repeat any of the mistakes that they have committed four weeks back on March 6th right from the coin toss. Fleming put Bangladesh into batting first this time as he was very much aware of New Zealand top and middle order collapse in that match when he gifted the first use of the wicket in early morning conditions to the Bangladeshi bowlers after winning the toss and saw his team struggling at 75 for 6.To their credit Bangladesh too tried not to repeat their mistakes of their disastrous outing in that rain affected 22 overs ... Tendulkar has to take a quick decision
2007-04-04 00:32:00 Tend ulkar has to take a quick decision By Cricketguru The debate has started in real earnest. Should Sachin Tendulkar call it a day? Should he at least retire from ODIs? Or should he be dropped altogether? There were traces of this debate over the past year ever since there has been a noticeable drop in Tendulkar's average and his contributions to the Indian team's cause. But now in the wake of two developments the for and against columns in the argument have become shriller. One of course has been the Indian debacle in the World Cup wherein Tendulkar''s scores were 7, 57 not out and 0. The second was a call from Ian Chappell asking the superstar to leave the scene. Said the former Australian captain in a recent column: ``At the moment Tendulkar looks like a player trying to eke out a career; build on a glittering array of statistics. If he really is playing for that reason and not to help win as many matches as he can for India then he is wasting his time ... More About: Take , Quick , Decision , Sion
Team India split between leadership and senior pla
2007-04-03 16:08:00 Greg Chappell's report to the board is expected to be scathing in its criticism of the senior players including Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh Of all the challenges the Board for Control of Cricket in India has faced in the recent past, this could turn out to be the toughest one. When the working committee of the BCCI meets on April 7, following the meeting of the review committee the day before, they will have to choose between the leadership of the Indian team - Greg Chappell and Rahul Dravid - and the senior players. The division is sharp, complete and has reached a point of no return. Cutting to the chase, the issue is a simple one. There's a coach who wants a team he can take control of, and mould according to his vision. There are a group of players who would prefer a coach they can control. And there is a board that would prefer to have control over both of these factions. From all accounts, Chappell's report, due to... More About: Senior , Leadership , Team , Between
Flintoff set to play against Sri Lanka
2007-04-03 16:01:00 Allrounder takes part in practice session Andrew Flintoff has allayed fears over his fitness ahead of England's Super Eights match against Sri Lanka on Wednesday by taking part in a full training session at Antigua Recreation Ground. Flintoff was forced off the field for treatment on his left ankle during England's win against Ireland in Guyana. Flintoff batted and bowled during practice and was expected to face Sri Lanka at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. England need to win at least one of their two matches against Sri Lanka and Australia to have a realistic chance of reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 1992. More About: Play , Again
South Africa feel the weight of expectation
2007-04-03 15:55:00 Mickey Arthur's first goal is to leave Guyana with six points. Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, said his team felt "added pressure" to beat Ireland on Tuesday as they tried to set themselves up to progress past the Super Eights stage. Arthur also said South Africa wanted to avoid a rematch with Australia in the semi-finals. South Africa face Ireland and Bangladesh this week and need a more convincing performance than in their warm-up game when Ireland nearly pinched a shock victory. South Africa were in trouble at 91 for 8 before Andrew Hall led a recovery that inched them to 192. Ireland were on track to overhaul the total until they lost 18 for 6 in a late collapse. Arthur said beating Ireland and Bangladesh, which would give South Africa six points from three matches, was crucial. "They are huge games because when you sit down and make plans for the rest of the tournament, they are both 'banker' games and, with games like that, there comes an added pres... South Africa to target key Irish
2007-04-03 15:51:00 Not many South Africa ns may have made it to Guyana for the cricket but god knows there have been enough of them addressing press conferences. There were three of them in one hour this afternoon, and the least somebody could have done is got a braai going, seeing how there is not a morsel of food to be found at the National Stadium on non-match days anyway. With most of the Super Eights clashes arousing about as much anticipation as an invitation to watch cows cud, it is what preview days at this World Cup have been increasingly reduced to, cute symmetries and connections, such as, for example, how the teams for Tuesday's encounter both have South Africa n coaches and, what's more, the two have been friends. Yet if there is a degree of mutual admiration between Mickey Arthur and Adrian Birrell, the Ireland coach, it is borne out of professional achievement. When Arthur talks of Birrell and Ireland, he could almost be describing his own team. "I think what makes them a toug... More About: Iris , Irish
Power without responsibility:the story of Pakistan
More articles from this author:2007-04-03 00:59:00 Nasim Ashraf has had a forgettable tenure so far. Today we hear that Mushy, the president not the assistant coach, has not accepted the resignation of his pal Nasim Ashraf. This is a diabolical decision. Ashraf has presided over the most disastrous period in the history of Pakistan cricket. Blessed by failure he is being asked to continue and finish the job. God help us. The job he gave the impression of performing was the destruction of Pakistan cricket. Following the lead of his own boss, President Mushy, he appointed his own pals and acquaintances to key PCB positions. No wonder Pakistan cricket is in a mess. Ashraf has presided over the dumb reign of Younis Khan as "dummy" captain, the doping fiasco, Waqar's dismissal and the horse-trading that lead to Mushy the coach being appointed, the injury and selection chaos, the unfettered power of Inzamam and the sidelining of Woolmer (on this I quote Bob: "Since the resignation of the last Chairman any views I have had have not been w...
