Gabe Ruediger deemed "mentally unfit to fight"

From GracieFight er.com:Spike TV TUF fighter, Gabe Ruediger, has been barred from fighting in this Saturday's K-1/Pro Elite show. Ruediger was released from his UFC contract to pursue fighting elsewhere. He recently signed with the K-1 where he was to face Katsuhiko Nagata (2-1).He was dropped from fighting on the card by California State Athletic Commissioner, Armando Garcia, who had recently watched Ruediger on The Ultimate Fighter TV show. Garcia cited the show in determining that Ruediger was "mentally unfit to fight". On the show Ruediger seemed to have suffered a mental breakdown after unsuccessfuly making the 155lbs. weight limit. This fight would have been at 161lbs. It is unclear if Ruediger will be able to fight in California if he is not cleared by a mental health specialist.

The message all week long was that this was the event that would help make mixed martial arts more popular than boxing.The marketing machine that is the Ultimate Fighting Championship drilled it home on the covers of the two biggest sports magazines, mainstream media coverage unheard of just a short time ago.A few weeks earlier, there was a fight of another kind which also had a message attached. Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. were on the front of Sports Illustrated and the question was whether their fight would save boxing. Diego Sanchez had a staph infection during his UFC 69 to Josh Koscheck.That's what Dana White told reporters during a telephone conference call yesterday. "Diego was going to retire at the weigh-ins that day because a test came up that he had hepatitis C," White said. At some point doctors decided that he didn't have hep-C, but couldn't determine what it was. "The next day after the fight," White said, "he’s got a hole in his thigh the size of a coffee cup; He had a staph infection and they couldn’t diagnose what was wrong with him. ... Although the Brazilian Olympic boxing team performed well in the Prague tournament, in the Czech Republic, overall taking four medals (one silver and three bronze) against European fighters, Rogerio Minotouro Nogueira felt some disappointment with his loss on the first day. Now there is cause to celebrate, however, with his contention in the Boxam tournament, in Vigo, Spain . With a victory by an uncontestable score of 16 to 6 over the Scottish David Harma, Minotouro qualified for the second round of the competition, and gained a boost for the final stretch in his preparations for the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro, set to take place on Monday the 15th of July. Besides Minotouro, Davi Souza and Rafael Lima also won in the first round. SportsMay 22, 2007 Former WWE wrestling champion Brock Lesnar may have to wait to make his professional mixed martial arts debut since his scheduled opponent, Hong Man Choi , was denied a license for medical reasons by the California Athletic Commission. Mike Kogan of FEG USA, one of the card's promoters, confirmed Tuesday that Choi was declined by the commission but said he did not know why. The 7-foot-2, nearly 400-pound South Korean is scheduled to face Lesnar in the main event of a June 2 card at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
