Liddell's Incredible Conditioning
2007-05-23 17:14:00
Wednesday, May 23, 2007 By Mike Sloan Muhammad Ali used to boast before fights that he was in the best shape of his life. Evander Holyfield did the same, and most recently Oscar De La Hoya has become synonymous with the "best shape of my life" cliché.It's rare when that sort of phrase is muttered in mixed martial arts ... 2007-05-22 21:09:00
Kimbo says he's cage-ready.Kimbo Slice says that training for his upcoming fight with Ray Mercer has given him a new apprciation for MMA.“I gotta give all respect to guys in mixed martial arts, didn't know how serious it was until I got involved myself,” the backyard brawler told a Miami CBS-TV affiliaite.Kimbo has been training at the Miami Freestyle Fighting Academy in preparation for his June 23 Cage Fury fight against former boxing heavyweight champ Ray Mercer. To further make his point, Kimbo offers a testimonial on the FFA homepage (which seems inspired by the infomercials of Ron Popeil):"It's your boy Kimbo, coming out of the 305 down here at the FFA, the Freestyle Fighting Academy, with my boy Marcos Avellan. I come here to keep myself together and be prepared for people like Gannon that like using the guillotine unexpectedly. Back then I didn’t know how to break it down... but now because of my boy Marcos I’m ready for whatever... Believe that! I like to keep ...

Scott Harrison arrested again
2007-05-21 22:23:00
Monday, May 21 2007 Yet more trouble for former WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison. For the second time in seven months Harrison has been arrested in Spain, this time for getting into a fight at a brothel in the town of Alhaurin el Grande. Harrison was held over the weekend by authorities and released Monday. Harrison was previously arrested in Spain last year on charges of car theft and assaulting police and spent five weeks in jail at a time he should have been training to defend his WBO title. He was later stripped after pulling out due an inability to make the weight, and subsequently banned by the BBBC. He is due back in the UK by Wednesday to answer charges of assaulting a police officer in a Glasgow pub.

GFC show sucked big time
2007-05-21 15:37:00
Source: The Fight NetworkColumbus, Ohio – Leading the night in what would mostly become a display of first-round victories, Rob Wince landed a heavy right hand to end Leopoldo Serao’s night just seconds into the first round. Serao would lie unconscious well over two minutes – toes curled and legs locked – raising concerns from ringside doctors and Gracie Fight Championsipss officials. Serao (7-6) was later cleared of serious injury at a nearby hospital.Wince (12-7) credits the victory to his, “Big right hand equals good night!” An emotional Wince dedicated the victory to his recent 12 year old son’s passing, “My son was with me the whole time.”With roughly 1,200 fans filling the seats in the Value City Arena for the promotion’s second effort in a little over a year, energy and expectations were high for an undefeated Nissen Osterneck (3-0) and Chris Myers (3-7). Osterneck made little work out of the night’s only controversial referee stoppage (Shoulder Lock) ea...

Footnote to History: First Bout At 3:05 PM
2007-05-21 15:35:00
Boxing’s historical record, like most forms of history, centers on the exploits of kings, not foot soldiers. But the sweet science is about more than great champions. Journeymen, faceless opponents, and young fighters with optimism are an integral part of the game.On Saturday, May 5, 2007, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr met in the ring after the most extensive marketing campaign in the history of boxing. Five hours earlier, on the same square of illuminated canvas, two unknown fighters faced off against one another in an eight-round lightweight contest. This is the story of those preliminary-bout fighters.ENTIRE ARTICLE

Taylor, Pavlik speak!
2007-05-20 19:04:00
Sunday, May 20 2007 By Matt Amato / Photo: JD Meredith Kelly Pavlik tonight stressed his right for a title fight after a stunning seventh round stoppage of Edison Miranda in the WBC middleweight eliminator fight at the FedEx Forum in Memphis. "To fight Taylor would be great," he said to a rapturous crowd, still on a high from what is sure to have been considered one of the fights of the year. Indeed, his promoter, Bob Arum, was quick to demand a title fight be sanctioned by the WBO, saying that he would take it as far as "the Supreme Court" if Pavlik is overlooked. Naturally, Jermain Taylor immediately faced questions about Pavlik after his split decision victory over Cory Spinks in the main event ensured he retained his WBO and WBC belts. "I’ll fight Pavlik but let’s get the money right," he said. (More)

How to fix The Ultimate Fighter
2007-05-20 19:03:00
Things haven’t been going great ratings wise for the Ultimate Fighter reality show. TUF4: The Comeback started strong but quickly slid in the ratings, panned by the general public as the dryest and most boring season yet. The fighters were too cautious in and out of the ring, and it spelled for terribly dull television.ENTIRE ARTICLE

Pavlik KOs Miranda in classic!
2007-05-20 05:08:00
Saturday, May 19 2007 By Matt Amato at ringside In the bout we've all been waiting for, middleweight Kelly Pavlik (31-0, 28 KOs) scored a spectacular seventh round knockout over Edison Mira nda (28-2, 24 KOs) in a WBC eliminator. In a spectacular first round, both fighters traded punches the full three minutes, with Pavlik pressing the action. More toe-to-toe action in round two as both landed and absorbed major league bombs. Pavlik's aggression allowed him to keep Miranda backing up and off balance as he outworked Miranda over the next few rounds. Pavlik finally knocked down Miranda twice in the sixth. Miranda spit out his mouthpiece after the first knockdown and was deducted a point by referee Steve Smoger. A Pavlik barrage floored Miranda again in the seventh and the fight was stopped. Time was 1:54.For live updates and undercard results, click here.

Marijuana Culture in MMA
2007-05-18 22:57:00
Recently, there has been a lot of heat surrounding the mixed martial arts world and marijuana. The most recent is the case of Nick Diaz, who tested positive for marijuana following the biggest win of his career over Takanori Gomi at Pride 33 by way of gogoplata. Subsequently Diaz has gotten screwed because the NSAC has fined him, suspended him, and changed the victory to a no-contest.Read the entire article HERE.

Fighter changes nickname for UFC 72
2007-05-18 22:43:00
From GracieMag.com:Those that keep up with MMA are aware of how it is fertile terrain for the creation of nicknames. Often the nickname will become more well-known than the fighter’s own name, as with Minotauro, Cyborg, Shogun and Shaolin, for example. However, sometimes the nickname may cause problems. That is what happened to the American fighter Marcus Davis. Called up to fight at UFC 72, to take place on June 16, in Belfast, Ireland, Davis had to change his nickname. And what was the reason for that? The fighter is known as "The Irish Hand Grenade." “It sucks because I’ve used the nickname for 15 years. It’d be like calling yourself the Taliban Bomber and fighting in New York. So, it’s a temporary change implemented by the UFC,” explained the cheerful Davis, who will be introduced as “The Celtic Warrior” at UFC 72. An American of Irish descent, Davis earned the nickname “The Irish Hand Grenade” while training boxing in New England. The one responsible for it ...

So Long, Boxing
2007-05-17 20:57:00
MMA Fighter Chris BrennanColumbus has helped to make cage fighting America’s hottest sport By Erik Johns / May 17, 2007 Two weekends ago, 17,000 people packed into the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to watch Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather duke it out for boxing’s super welterweight world title. Another 2 million people plopped down $60 to watch the pay-per-view broadcast. The bout was dubbed The Fight to Save Boxing . It hardly lived up to the task—the lackluster match ended in a widely booed split decision in favor of the cocky, unlikable Mayweather. On that same Saturday night in Columbus, about 1,000 people who might once have been glued to the boxing telecast were instead at the LC Pavilion, watching a bunch of amateur cage fighters go at it with much thinner gloves and a lot fewer rules. They are fans of this no-frills, no-holds-barred competition that is on the cusp of passing boxing as America’s blood sport of choice.ENTIRE ARTICLE

Chris Brennan talks Gracie Fighting Championships
2007-05-17 20:49:00
Mixed Martial Arts Fighter Chris BrennanAlthough the Gracie Fighting Championships card has taken some hits with both Wes Simms and Jeff Monson out there are still plenty of good matches. Several Abu Dhabi competitors are on the card including Jacare, Cacareco, Dmaian Maia, and Chris Brennan. Chris is not only a Abu Dhani ’05 vet, he is also a UFC vet, Pride vet and former King of the Cage Champion. At GFC his opponent is Adam Disabato. KM: What have you been up to lately?CB: I moved to Dallas, Texas so I’m training here a lot. Training some motorcross kids and some jiu-jitsu guys too, just not full time. KM: Why Dallas?CB: We found a really good house at a good price in a good neighborhood. KM: Isn’t that also where Travis Lutter has his school?CB: Travis is a couple hours from here in Ft. Worth. Even (Guy) Mezger is an hour from here. I don’t have a gym here in Dallas, I just teach privates at my house. I still have my guys that have schools in Canada, England, and Ireland...
