Rizzo, Monson in summer showdown in 'Big D'

UFC veterans Pedro Rizzo and Jeff Mons on will headline Art of War 3 in Dallas June 30 at American Airlines Center. The Art of War, which promotes its brand of mixed martial arts under the Undisputed Arena Fighting Championships banner, debuted in Dallas in January and hosted its second show in Austin with nearly 3,000 fans in attendance last Friday. AOW's third installment will feature a U.S. versus Brazil theme, with a very strong card in place for a regional promotion. In addition to the Rizzo (15-7)-Monson (22-6) main event, the event will have Jeremy Horn taking on Jorge Santiago and a potentially highly entertaining affair between a pair of tough welterweights in Jake Shields (16-4-1) and Carlo Prater (19-5-1). UFC veteran Chris Leben has accepted a position as Head MMA Instructor at the new ICON Fitness gym on Oahu, Hawaii. The gym is under the ownership of ICON Sport fight promoter T.Jay Thompson.Following his fight with fellow Ultimate Fighter veteran Kalib Starns at UFC 71 in Las Vegas, Nev., Leben laid out his plans as a coach, “I'm going to start coaching at a gym out in Hawaii. ICON Sport is opening a gym out on Oahu and I'm going to be the head coach out there. GINA CARANO OFF OF JUNE 2ND FIGHT CARD

Gina Cara no was supposed to fight Jan Finney at the K-1 Dynamite show on June 2nd, but she unfortunately had to pull out of the card. According to a report by The Fight Network, Carano had just come back from Thailand and had not felt well since her return. While at WEC 27 over the weekend, she had to be taken away in an ambulance due to dehydration. She claimed to be struggling with an intestinal illness.Unfortunately for K-1, this is a blow to their card. Carano has been touted as one of the best female fighters in the world. Her bout with Julie Kedzie at EliteXC was easily fight of the night and provided more interest into the women’s mixed martial arts scene. It is not yet known if K-1 will attempt to find a replacement.(Source)

Johnny Tapia begins rehab

Tuesday, May 15 2007 Five-time world champ Johnny Tapia has checked into the Second Chance rehab facility in Albuquerque, NM, after pleading guilty to felony drug possession Monday. The former champ decided to volunteer to serve at the rehab center rather than opt for a period of probation. Tapia is under court order not to leave the facility until his time is served. In March, Tapia overdosed on cocaine in a hotel room; drugs were found in his possession, leading to a criminal charge. -- Chris Cozzone Source

This hot chick has nothing to do with thisstory. Inset: MMA.tv owner Kirik Jenness"Art of War” 2 was a great show with plenty of entertainment to be had. If you could give a title to the event, it would be “Night of the Rear Naked Choke” or “Horrible Officiating Leads to Vegetables”. There were five RNC in the evening and it was the submission “du jour”. The amazing thing is that each was different in how it was obtained. The secondary theme was horrible refereeing. They were atrocious and there was no excuse for a couple of the matches going as long as they did. We were literally yelling from the media seats to fire the ref’s as they totally bungled their job. Last Saturday night, I was fortunate enough to be in attendance for one of the biggest events in recent boxing history. I was sitting with a few friends getting ready to watch Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather attempt to put on a match worthy of the hype surrounding their encounter for the past several months. As an event, it was one for the ages. As a fight, it could not possibly live up to the hype. It was, however, worth the price of admission.
