Mixed martial arts makes a smash landing
2007-06-26 14:39:00 REX C. CURRY / Special to DMN Mixed martial arts fighters Cody Walker (left) and Jay Serra spar at Guy Mezger's Lions Den Dallas. Not long ago, Travis Lutter became so uneasy about his profession, he worked a white lie into every introduction. Whenever he was asked what he did, he replied that he ran a gym. The few times he told people he was a mixed martial arts fighter, he drew blank stares His vagueness was probably a good thing. If he told people that he entered a metal cage with the intent of pounding another human being into submission, the reaction might have been worse. "I didn't want to have that conversation," said Lutter, who runs a Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy in Fort Worth. "Now, I don't get a chance to answer that question much anymore." Many more people know Lutter, thanks to The Ultimate Fighter, a TV reality show. And mixed martial arts has become the next big thing.ENTIRE ... UFC Fight Night 10 Medical Suspensions
2007-06-25 18:07:00 By: EvilmasterThe Florida State Boxing Commission has issued medical suspensions to five of the 18 fighters from last week’s UFC Fight Night 10 event, and Spencer Fisher and Sam Stout’s three-round, main-event battle resulted in suspensions for both fighters. Fisher scored a unanimous decision over Stout at the event, which took place Tuesday, June 12 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. Stout has been handed an indefinite suspension and will need a CT scan and medical clearance before fighting again. Fisher, who reportedly had sutures (stitches) sewn in over both eyes, has been issued a 45-day suspension. As expected, Jordan Radev was also handed a suspension. The Bulgarian was tagged by hard-hitting Drew McFedries in the night’s first televised fight. The 25-second knockout included the KO punch and a few follow-up punches while Radev was unconscious on the canvas. Radev was slow to get up, and despite leaving the Octagon under his own power, he w... More About: Medical , Suspension

Reality guru Burnett ready for martial arts combat
2007-06-25 15:22:00 LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Reality producer Mark Burnett is developing a primetime series involving the bone-crunching sport of mixed martial arts. The man behind "Survivor" and "The Apprentice" has teamed with ProElite, which organizes professional MMA events, to produce the project, according to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Mixed martial arts is a less violent and more complex version of ultimate fighting, a sport that emerged in the early '90s. It showcases a unique mix of judo, karate, tae kwon do, jujutsu, wrestling, boxing and other established fighting techniques. MMA is still controversial, and events have been approved in fewer than half of U.S states. ProElite, which produces professional MMA events through its EliteXC division and runs the MMA social networking site ProElite.com, already has a presence on television. Showtime has been carrying live EliteXC matches since February, when the premium ca... More About: Martial Arts , Arts , Combat
Sam Caplan: TUF 5 Finale was terrible!
2007-06-25 15:03:00 The production was terrible last night. It seems like they misfired a lot of pre-recorded stuff and played it during times when Mike Goldberg was supposed to speak live. The pacing of the show also sucked, due in large part to how quick the first two matches were. It was great seeing two matches that were taped during the preliminary portion of the show. However, there are just too many commercials. It felt like we were being punished because the first matches ended so quickly and that we got pelted with more commercials than usual. I really wish the UFC would have gotten a deal with HBO because it would have been a way to see cards without paying $39.95 and not having to deal with commercials.I also wish the UFC would start covering their events like it was a sporting event. Why do we have to see a Shannon Lee interview? I realize Spike wants Bruce Lee Day promoted, but just do a live read or a pre-recorded advertisement. If you’re going to interview someone, why not last words f... More About: Finale , Plan , Terri , Fina

NEW LOW FOR MERCER: TAPS OUT TO SLICE IN 72 SECONDS
2007-06-25 14:44:00 Kimbo Slice KO1 Ray Merc er (MMA exhibition)... In a fight that was ultimately sanctioned as an MMA exhibition, 1984 Olympic medalist and former WBO heavyweight titlist Ray Mercer sunk to an all-time low. Mercer lasted just 72 seconds against Kevin Ferguson, aka Kimbo Slice. After Slice took Mercer down, the two rolled around on the canvas for a while until Mercer succumbed to a Slice chokehold in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Slice is a former homeless man and bodyguard for a pornography director who had no professional fighting experience. However, Slice made a name for himself posting videos of his underground fights on Internet sites such as youtube. Those videos revealed Slice as a powerful but unskilled brute who could fight hard for about a minute and a half before becoming exhausted. That Mercer could lose to him is a complete disgrace. Hatton KOs Castillo in 4th!
2007-06-24 05:56:00 Saturday, June 23 2007By Albert Howell at ringside / Photo: Evilmaster IBO light welterweight champion Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton (43-0, 31 KOs) demolished Jose Luis "El Temible" Castillo (55-8-1, 47 KOs) on Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Both fighters made good on their promise to not take a step backward -- which led to a lot of wrestling between punches. The noticably quicker Hatton, however, was able to beat Castillo to the punch all night, finally knocking down Castillo with a paralyzing left hook to the body in round four. All Castillo could do was watch referee Joe Cortez count him out at 2:16. An eleventh round knockdown didn't stop IBF International welterweight titleholder Matthew Hatton (31-3-1, 12 KOs) from retaining his belt. Hatton, younger brother of Ricky, defeated Edwin Vazquez (22-10-2, 8 KOs) by scores of 115-113, 117-111, 115-112.Super middleweight Fulgencio Zuniga (19-2-1, 16 KOs) pounded out a unanimous ten round decision ove... Dana White continues to spout bullshit
2007-06-24 02:05:00 Dana White , seen here staring at the ass of Ken ShamrockBRAD McCRAY The Oregonian Staff It's quite possible that Dana White (according to Dana White) is the hardest working man in sports. The president of the UFC has been living at the center of a four-year whirlwind of press conferences, television appearances, negotiations with innumerable fighters, sponsors and partners and, oh, yeah, mixed martial arts fights. Catching up with White via phone on Thursday was a feat unto itself. "I'm busier than I ever was," he said. "I never want to sit back. I want to turn it up a notch every year." Last week, White flew from Las Vegas to Bangor, Maine, to speak at a high school commencement and then back to Vegas. On Tuesday, he flew from Vegas to Florida for Ultimate Fight Night. On Wednesday, he was in Denver for meetings and then to New York. He slept in New York, attended meetings and then arrived in Ireland on Friday for the UFC 72 weigh-in. Dennis Kang weighs options
2007-06-24 00:47:00 “The number one thing is going to be financial. We’re looking at different factors, such as the level of exposure that the organization can bring me and the talent I can go up against. I want to fight anyone that’s on top. I think the No. 1 guy in my division [185 pounds] right now is Dan Henderson. You’ve also got Anderson Silva, who’s real tough, out there, and there are guys like Rich Franklin. It’s such a deep division. I don’t want any easy fights. I want the best fights, the hardest fights…. Just the exposure alone [in the UFC] is worth heavy consideration. It’s something I want a piece of. Every time that I go to corner a friend [or] a teammate at a UFC, or if I just go to watch, I realize I have a lot of fans. Everybody always asks me when I’m going to be fighting in the UFC. It just depends on who is going to make the right offer.” – Talented middleweight free agent Denis Kang tells FightNetwork.com that he is in negotiations with several organizatio... Frank Shamrock Should Be Suspended!
2007-06-24 00:45:00 By Evilmaster On Thursday, Armando Garcia was quoted by Dave Meltzer as doing the following at the StrikeForce fighter weigh-ins and rules meeting: Armando Garcia was very careful in explaining what wouldn’t be allowed, including swearing, lewd gestures, antagonizing T-shirts and hats, face paint in the ring (not a problem here since Warpath isn’t on the show), carrying an opponent and entertaining the crowd or anything that isn’t a 100% in earnest effort to win at all times. Well, last night’s fight between Frank Sham rock and Phil Baroni at HP Pavilion was a good fight. It was also a fight that featured Frank Shamrock taunting his opponent, including putting his hands together and motioning that he was going to put Baroni to sleep before hitting him with a 1-2 combination that sent Baroni to the canvas. Other periods (time marks) of taunting or ‘entertaining the crowd’ from Mr. Shamrock include — 1:19 left in round one, talking from the bottom position as the end...
UFC on HBO Deal Is Dead
2007-06-24 00:42:00 By EvilmasterA long-publicized — and long-awaited — deal between the UFC and subscription-cable leader HBO will now not happen because of the recent arrest (and subsequent firing) of HBO Chairman and CEO Chris Albrecht last month, according to a report from Variety.com. Rumors of the possible deal first surfaced late last year, and throughout the 2007 calendar year, UFC president Dana White spoke often about the progress and benefits of a potential partnership with HBO. The discussions advanced far enough for White to announce in April that a deal was done. In fact, the Dana White was so confident an agreement would be reached that April 21’s UFC 70 event was supposedly going to air on HBO. It was later moved to Spike TV after the deal stalled. However, after May 5’s mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya, Albrecht was arrested for allegedly assaulting his female companion near a valet-parking station. Albrecht was actually responsible for overruling HB... More About: Deal , Dead

James Toney busted for steroids AGAIN!
2007-06-22 14:53:00 Three-time champion James Tone y tested positive for steroids and could face a one-year suspension from boxing. Armando Garcia, the California State Athletic Commission's executive officer, said Toney and Danny Batchelder, his opponent in a heavyweight bout May 24 in San Jose, tested positive for two types of steroids. They were suspended indefinitely. "They have a right to appeal," Garcia said Wednesday. "My recommendation is suspension until the end of the licensing year and a $2,500 fine for both. We will give them the 30 days to appeal. If they don't, that's what the suspension will be." Toney tested positive for boldenone and stanazolol, and Batchelder tested positive for stanazolol and oxandolone, Garcia said. If they don't appeal, the boxers would be suspended one year from the date of their fight. Toney won a split decision over Batchelder, an outcome that won't be changed, Garcia said. Franklin, who survived some late-fight danger to defeat Yushin Okami in UFC 72’s main event, is one of the UFC’s winningest fighters. He defeated Evan Tanner at UFC 53 to win the middleweight title, but after two successful title defenses, he lost his belt to Silva at UFC 64. An all-out turf war for PRIDE in Japan
2007-06-22 14:33:00 By: EvilmasterJune 22nd, 2007 On Wednesday, Nikkan Sports published a report that on August 18th, the first ’shinsei’ PRIDE event would happen at Saitama Super Arena. Obviously, it sounded like the kind of rumor that would be started by someone who used to be affiliated with DSE or is trying to get involved on the ground in Japan to try to revive the PRIDE name there. That’s just how business works in Japan. Japanese writer Motoichiro Takasu contacted Hiroyuki Kato, who was an important director of PRIDE events in Japan under DSE Inc. leadership. (Kato was described as a representative for PFWW in Takasu’s post.)Kato flat out denied that there are any plans for a PRIDE Worldwide FC event in Japan right at this moment.
