Fresh off a loss that likely sealed their fate as NIT-bound, the Syracuse Orange starting five signed and returned an 8x10 photo I designed in just under two weeks care of the SU athletic department. Jonny Flynn, Paul Harris, Donte' Greene, Scoop Jardine, and Arinze Onuaku all signed the photo.Former Miami (Ohio) quarterback Ben Roethlisberger signed a single index card care of his current NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in about three weeks. The Booty brothers - Abram, Josh, and John David - each signed a pair of 8x10 photos I designed and sent back in December. That request took 80 days. Abram, the oldest of the trio, was a wide receiver for LSU from 1997 to 2000, while younger brother Josh was a Tiger quarterback from 1999 to 2000 before transferring. John David, of course, is the two-year starting QB for the USC Trojans who just wrapped up his college career.The starting five for Drake - Josh Young, Leonard Houston, Jonathan Cox, Adam Emmenecker, and Klayton Korver - all signed a single 8x10 photo sent care of the Drake athletic department. Hawaii record-setting quarterback Colt Brennan signed an ESPN the Magazine and an 8x10 photo in less than two weeks. The Warriors' signal-caller broke countless school, conference, and NCAA records while at Hawaii but is projected to fall into the 3rd round or lower in this spring's NFL Draft. The former three players were the Commodores' leading hitters last season, all batting between .378 and .386. At long last, star Indiana freshman Eric Gordon signed and returned a pair of index cards care of the IU athletic department in two weeks. The first year sensation is leading the Big Ten with more than 21 points per game while shooting 40% from downtown.Also signing was Drake sophomore guard Josh Young. That success, care of the Drake athletic department, took just under 3 weeks; Young signed a pair of cards, completed a questionnaire, and also included one of the nicest notes I've ever received. The Bulldogs' leading scorer, Young has led the team to a 22-2 start to the season with his superb 46.1% shooting from the outside.Rounding out the week was star Arizona first baseman C.J. One of the coolest successes I've ever obtained finally arrived fully completed this week. The Brohm brothers - Jeff, Gregg, and Brian - each signed an 8x10 photo I designed and sent to them care of the Louisville athletic department. Jeff was a former Kentucky "Mr. Football" who went on to play in the NFL and is now coaching at UL. Like Jeff, Greg is also a current assistant at UL after starting for three years at WR for the Cardinals in the early '90's. Brian, of course, is the team's record-setting quarterback who is expected to be a top choice in this spring's NFL Draft.Legendary college football running back Earl Campbell signed an index card and a pair of 4x6 photos in just 9 days. It was a mailbox full on Monday as a total of eight college basketball coaches signed photos via email.Maryland head coach Gary Williams and Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun highlighted the list, as both sent back a personalized 8x10 photo. Also signing were St. Joseph's head coach Phil Martelli and Southern Cal head coach Tim Floyd, though I question the legitimacy of the latter signature. In addition, Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint and Delaware head coach Monte' Ross also signed 8x10 photos. Meanwhile, Miami (Ohio) head coach Charlie Coles and Binghamton head coach Kevin Broadus each signed smaller photos. All of these requests took less than two weeks.
