Ducati: Domenicali Fears Honda Most, And Mamola Agrees
2008-01-15 22:46:00 In an interview on the official MotoGP.com website, Claudia Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Corse told reporters what they already knew: that Ducati is most fearful of the new Honda RC212V for the 2008 season. Domenicali made two very obvious and related points: that Honda will want revenge for their miserable performance in 2007, and that HRC have the technological prowess and means to achieve just that. "They can make a mistake once, but it's difficult for them to make a mistake twice," Domencali said. Former 500cc veteran Randy Mamola backed up much of what Domenicali had to say. Mamola, also present at Ducati's annual press week at the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio, had a chance to ride all of the 2007 MotoGP bikes after the final race of the season at Valencia, and had some interesting observations to make, which found a willing audience in Italian site GPOne.com. "Of all the bikes present (at the Valencia postseason test ) the Honda has made the most progress during ... More About: Fears

Ezpeleta Steps Away From A Spec ECU
2008-01-12 23:33:00 Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna s.l., the body which organizes and runs the MotoGP show, is a shrewd political operator. After his most recent coup, forcing Bridgestone to supply Valentino Rossi with tires for 2008 by threatening to turn MotoGP into a single make series, he turned his attention to the racing spectacle of MotoGP. A much-heard lament in the latter half of the 2007 season was that electronics - and more specifically, traction control - were killing the spectacle of racing, and even, it was muttered, removing much of the skill. And so just before Christmas, Ezpeleta once more tried the "cat-among-the-pigeons" gambit by suggesting that a single, standardized ECU could solve MotoGP's problems. This time, however, he may have pushed the envelope just a fraction too hard: In a fascinating interview with the Italian site GPOne.com, Ezpeleta appears to pull back from the brink, and is now discounting the possiblity of a spec ECU. Rather unsurprisingly, the main objection has... More About: Steps
Kropotkin's Top Ten Motorcycle Racers of the 2007 Season
2008-01-09 23:52:00 In the long, bleak period of the MotoGP winter test ban, it is traditional to look back and assess the season just passed. Although we are no big fans of tradition here at MotoGPMatters.com (tradition, after all, is the enemy of progress), this is one we are prepared to make an exception for. And so, as a prelude to the resumption of testing in Sepang on January 22nd, here's a run down of Kropotkin's Top Ten Motorcycle Racers for 2007. More About: Season
Wild Rumors Abound: Schumacher To Race 3 MotoGP Races In 2008
2008-01-03 11:04:00 It sounds almost too bizarre to be true, and our research has failed to turn up any further confirmation, but the Spanish website DailyMotos.com is reporting that Michael Schumacher is to take part in three MotoGP races in 2008. According to DailyMotos, Ducati were so impressed by the times set by Schumacher during his test after the final race of 2007 at Valencia. Ducati have allegedly put Schumacher on a special diet, given the German F1 World Champion training advice, and banned him from going skiing. Schumacher is supposed to appear at several MotoGP tests in preparation for his wildcard appearances, starting at Sepang. ~~~ UPDATED ~~~ This story was originally posted on the Spanish website DailyMotos.com on December 28th, also known in Spain as "el Dia de los Santos Innocentes", the Day of the Innocent Saints. On this day, it is usual for Spaniards to play tricks on each other, and for the media to try and pass off fake stories as news, as a joke. In other words, this story lo... Rusty Writes - Advice For Carmen Ezepeleta about Standardizing ECUs
2008-01-01 21:32:00 As an American who has as much interest in auto racing as he does motorcycle racing, I was more than a bit nervous as the threat of a single-tire-supplier rule loomed over the Fall of '07. Now that I read of the latest seemingly similar threat of a standardized ECU, I'm begging an inquiry into motive. Valentino Rossi is complaining about the pervasiveness of electronic traction controls. I infer this is a complaint about Dani Pedrosa, since Casey Stoner claims to be using none... Standard ECUs Could Come To MotoGP
2007-12-20 16:51:00 The influence of electronics has been growing ever since the MotoGP class entered the four-stroke era. This has caused a great deal of concern among many fans and riders, as the bikes get easier to ride within 99% of their potential. To put an end to this, Carmelo Ezepeleta, the CEO of Dorna, has suggested that MotoGP could switch to a standard ECU, much as Formula 1 has done. Any such move would cast doubt on the rationale for the MotoGP class, which is meant to be the pinnacle of motorcycle engineering. It is also unclear how a standard ECU could be created which could cope with requirements of the many different engine configurations and firing sequences currently in use in MotoGP. Ezpeleta's suggestion should probably be seen in the context of his last proposal: to move to a single tire rule. In retrospect, it seems certain that this threat was meant solely to force the tire manufacturers and teams to reach an agreement on tire rules. The proposal to switch to a single ECU ... MotoGP Rule Changes: Tire Testing Restricted, Oval Cylinders Banned
2007-12-20 01:26:00 The FIM, the governing body of international motorcycle racing, today announced changes to the technical regulations for the MotoGP series. The changes are numerous, if mostly rather minor, and covered tires, seat units, and cylinder bores, together with a host of minor clean ups and clarifications. The biggest change concerns tire testing, and is aimed at further reducing the sky high costs which developing tires for MotoGP seem to entail. The text, which is a clarification of the new tire regulations released in October, allows MotoGP tire manufacturers to test for up to four whole days using MotoGP machines at a Grand Prix track selected by the teams before the season starts. However, the amended text seems to create some ambiguity in testing. The text reads: Tyre manufacturers that supply tyres to the MotoGP class may, prior to the first event of each year, designate and inform the Race Direction of one Grand Prix circuit as their testing circuit at which they may practice du... Stoner To Run #1 Plate, Vermeulen To Take #7 Sheene Tribute Plate in 2008
2007-12-14 15:27:00 The FIM today unveiled the provisional entry list for the 2008 MotoGP season (PDF document), revealing a couple of important changes in the numbers riders will be running next season. The most important of these is of course the number to be carried by the world champion. Like Nicky Hayden before him, Casey Stoner 's bike will bear the number 1 plate. This will please Dorna and the FIM, as it's much easier to explain to newcomers to the sport who the champion is when the champion is riding around with a great big number 1 on his motorcycle. Although Dorna and the FIM were delighted with Valentino Rossi's popularity as a champion, they always regretted the fact that Rossi never elected to run the #1 on his bike, preferring to stick with #46, his lucky number. The other major, if unsurprising, change is Chris Vermeulen. Vermeulen has made no secret of wanting to run the number 7, in tribute to the late, great Barry Sheene, Vermeulen's hero and mentor. Unfortunately for the Austral... More About: Tribute
Rossi To Stay For "Five More Years"
2007-12-12 16:05:00 One of the specters currently haunting MotoGP is the question of when the series' biggest audience puller, Valentino Rossi , will retire. After losing the title now for two years in a row, speculation had been mounting that Rossi would leave MotoGP sooner rather than later, possibly as early as the end of the 2008 season. In a recent interview with the Italian magazine MotoSprint, Rossi put an end to that speculation, claiming that he is likely to stay in MotoGP for another 5 years, which could see The Doctor remaining in MotoGP until 2012. Those 5 years are not definite, however, as Rossi has said in earlier interviews that the age he is likely to retire at is around 31, which would mean 3 more seasons in MotoGP for the 28 year old. What is certain is that Rossi will race in 2009, "unless I win every race next year", according to MotoSprint. Who Rossi will be racing with is the next area of conjecture, with the Italian's contract with Yamaha due to end after the 2008 season. R... More About: Years , Stay

Final Times From Day 2 of Jerez Test
2007-11-28 22:21:00 Dani Pedrosa ended top of the heap on the second day of the MotoGP test in Jerez , pipping Valentino Rossi to the post, and being the first rider to crack into the 1'39 bracket. Pedrosa set his fast lap on the 2008 version of the Honda RC212V, demonstrating that HRC has learned its lesson from the beating it took early in the 2007 season. Rossi set his fastest lap on qualifying tires, which he commented were not quite as good as the Michelins. Otherwise, Rossi is pleased with Bridgestones, claiming he has found real improvements with edge grip, despite the tires' construction being softer and less rigid than Yamaha expected. Rossi has been testing the 2007 tires, while Casey Stoner went out on 2008 rubber and crashed heavily, which Rossi put down to the tires not warming up quickly enough. Stoner injured some ligaments in his left shoulder, the result of a nasty Turn 3 highsider. His injuries compounded the problems he was already having with his right shoulder, after falling on t... Latest Times From Day 2 of Jerez Test - 5pm
2007-11-28 18:43:00 Once again, GPOne.com has the latest times from Jerez . Casey Stoner is no longer the fastest man on the track, but this was probably due to the unfortunate world champion suffering another big highside at Turn 3 during the early afternoon. Although Stoner walked away from the crash, he did not return to action. With Stoner gone, Valentino Rossi showed remarkable progress on his new Bridgestone rubber by setting the fastest time of the test so far. With Shinya Nakano second and Alex de Angelis third, the Japanese tires still seem to hold the edge so far. Of the Michelin runners, it was Andrea Dovizioso who was fastest, fractionally ahead of the two factory Hondas. The biggest worry in the paddock must be for Marco Melandri. So far, the Italian has signally failed to get to grips with the Ducati Desmosedici, in an ominous echo of his predecessor at Ducati, Loris Capirossi. Great things were expected of Melandri, but so far, he has been a long way off the pace. Test ing concludes on... More About: Times , Erez

Final 2007 MotoGP Test Sees Important Debuts
2007-11-26 23:30:00 On Tuesday, the final MotoGP test of the 2007 season will start at Jerez before the long winter test ban sets in. And the Spanish track will see some of the most significant pieces of the 2008 season puzzle make their debut, and giving MotoGP fans a first taste of what next year is likely to hold. Probably the most eagerly awaited event is Valentino Rossi's first outing on Bridgestone tires. Rossi already believes he has some idea of what to expect after spending all season watching how the Japanese tires react at close quarters. And being in a position to watch the tires so closely is probably what convinced Rossi to make the switch: after all, if you're ahead of your opponents, you can't see what their tires are doing. And Rossi's debut on Bridgestones will also see the first outing of the Split Yamaha Garage, with Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo's garages and pit crews carefully shielded from each other, despite the assurances made to Lorenzo before the Spanish prodigy signed for ... Sepang November 2007 Testing Times - Day 3
2007-11-17 16:43:00 Testing finished on Saturday at Sepang in cooler, but still hot, tropical conditions, and thankfully without any of the rain which had plagued the two previous days.. At the end of the three-day test, it was Nicky Hayden who came out fastest, shaving one hundredth of a second off Valentino Rossi's pole record, set on the 990 cc Yamaha M1. Next fastest man was Colin Edwards on the Tech 3 Yamaha, down 1.2 seconds, but as the Texan's time was set on race rubber, still 0.2 seconds faster than Casey Stoner's lap record set during the race here in October. Andrea Dovizioso was the fastest rookie, setting an impressive 4th fastest time, keeping the Suzuki veterans of Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi behind him. Jorge Lorenzo significantly improved his time on Saturday, as did the other Yamaha rookie James Toseland, despite setting the slowest time of the day on his first outing on the Yamaha M1. Rusty Writes: Tourist Trophy - The best way to learn in the off-season
2007-11-14 23:12:00 This will likely appear to be a paid commercial for a video game. Sorry for that, but I assure you, it isn’t. Rather, I beg your indulgence to consider one of the best ways to keep your mind racing while the sport is on its long hiatus. As I sit to write this, the game is at least a year-and-a-half old, and it was probably considered outdated when I started playing it just under a year ago. I insist that you trust me: this is much more than simply a “video game” with which you can avoid reality and otherwise escape being productive. Tourist Trophy was a product developed, in conjunction with the last generation of Gran Turismo for the PlayStation 2 platform. GT4, like its predecessors, was the best vehicle dynamics simulation available (prior to PS3 and GT5) without a race team contract or a manufacturer’s super-computer. This point alone, could be labored over for an entire column, and certainly has been elsewhere, so I will not do that here. Suffice to say, Tourist Troph... More About: Season , Learn , Off Season
A New Writer Joins MotoGPMatters
2007-11-14 23:04:00 Over the past couple of months, we have had a little help from guest writers. First, Mike did a fantastic job filling in for me while I was away on vacation, and later, The Duke from Rumblestrip Radio sent us an excellent article on the single tire situation. And now, another writer will be contributing to MotoGPMatters. He will be writing under the pseudonym Rusty Bucket, and I first started corresponding with him over a year ago. His e-mails to me have always been thoughtful and interesting, and offer fresh perspectives on things that I have missed, or just plain got wrong. As a consequence, I asked him if he would like to write for the site, and he has kindly agreed. His first piece is a discussion of the Tourist Trophy game, and how it helps him understand MotoGP, while later on, Rusty will be examining the Musco lighting company, the company responsible for the floodlights at MotoGP's first night race in Qatar. I hope you enjoy his contributions, I know I will. More About: Writer

Qatar Night Race Receives Official Approval
2007-11-12 23:52:00 When Dorna first announced that the opening round of the 2008 MotoGP season in Qatar was to be run at night, they were met with a great deal of skepticism. The fear was that the race would be too dangerous, with riders either being blinded by the floodlights, or else not being able to see the track well enough to race safely. To allay those fears, Dorna and the FIM, together with the MotoGP Riders Safety Commission, agreed to organize a test under night conditions at Qatar once the floodlighting had been completed. That test has now been completed, and the verdict is unanimously positive. Loris Capirossi, Ant West, James Toseland, Marco Melandri and Alex de Angelis, representing each of the manufacturers, ran several laps of the track on roadgoing supersports bikes, concentrating on the first section of track for which the floodlighting has already been completed by the American company Musco Lighting. All of the riders were very impressed by the floodlighting, and happy to give t... More About: Race , Night , Official

Phillip Island Faces "Upgrading" For Formula 1, But Ruin For Motorcycle Rac
More articles from this author:2007-11-09 23:31:00 Reports emerged from Australia yesterday that the Phillip Island circuit has become a possible future venue for the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. The option was mooted by Andrew Fox, managing director of the Linfox Property Group, the circuit's owners. Linfox are already planning an 18 hole golf course and a 5 star hotel at the facility, and are trying to lure Australian Formula One Grand Prix to the circuit, which is currently run on a street circuit around Albert Park in Melbourne. Fox suggested the move in an interview with a chain of Australian newspapers, after complaints in Victoria, the Australian state of which Melbourne is the capital, that the current street course in Albert Park cost local taxpayers some AUS $35,000,000 to stage. He told News Ltd that all it would take is for Ron Walker, chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, to pick up the phone and make the call. If a 10 year deal could be reached, then Fox could see no problem making the investment re... More About: Motorcycle , Faces , Formula 1 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
