2008-10-11 13:20:00 What a fun memory Mr. Miles gives Hendry an offseason to-do list I'm jumping to 3-5. From the Daily Herald: 3. Say thank you and farewell to reliever Bob Howry and center fielder Jim Edmonds. Howry gave it his all, but it was pretty clear there wasn't much left in the tank. Part of it is age. And don't forget, our old pal Dusty went to Howry and Scott Eyre an awful lot during the miserable 2006 season. With Edmonds, the Cubs aren't going to want to repeat the Gary Gaetti mistake. Gaetti sparked the Cubs to the 1998 wild card, and then-GM Ed Lynch re-upped him for '99. Gaetti couldn't repeat the magic and was done. 4. Call your old friend Andy MacPhail and rekindle the Brian Roberts talk. Maybe Andy will take Jason Marquis, Rich Hill and maybe a couple minor-leaguers for a player he's going to lose anyway. But forget the details for a minute. The big thing is that the Cubs have to get Alfonso Soriano out of the leadoff spot and get him out of there now. Roberts would fit the... 2008-10-10 16:25:00 Economic woes slow Cubs deal, according to Cuban From the Sun-Times: ''Yeah, it's going to affect the deal structure,'' Cuban said Thursday at the United Center, where the Mavericks played the Bulls in an exhibition game. ''It's going to create a challenge. Anytime the cost of capital goes up, the cost of assets goes down, which is what you're seeing in the stock market. Honestly, they'd be crazy to do something now because it's not optimal for them and it's not optimal for the buyer. So there's not really a rush. 'In a market like this, when there's so much uncertainty and IBM and General Electric don't know how much they're going to pay on a loan, Mark Cuban doesn't know, either. Six months ago, you could say: 'Here's how much this debt is going to cost you. Here are the terms that are available. Yes or no?' Now you can't do that anymore. Even if we wanted to close the day after tomorrow, the banks might not be able to close. There's that uncertainty that g... More About: Open , Friday , Headlines , Thread

2008-10-09 11:49:00 What? Seriously you guys, WHAT? The ass is back From the Daily Herald: Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Wednesday that doctors found no major problems with pitcher Rich Harden's cantankerous right shoulder. So Hendry had no problem picking up Harden's $7 million option for 2009. Harden, the former ace of the Oakland A's pitching staff picked up by the Cubs in a July trade, underwent an MRI arthrogram Tuesday and was examined by Cubs orthopedist Dr. Stephen Gryzlo and doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "Obviously, Rich has had a long history of some difficulty, but after the arthrogram was diagnosed by Dr. Gryzlo and other experts at Northwestern, it was clearly a situation where the best avenue was not going to be any surgical procedures," Hendry said. "Rich has had, at times, rotator (cuff) tendinitis. But there's been long-standing adaptive changes that every pitcher has in his shoulder." Hendry termed the problem "subtle instability" (with no tears in the rotato... More About: Open , Thursday , Headlines , Thread
More Good News: Marmol Injured in Car Crash
2008-10-08 00:51:00 Trib: SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol suffered minor injuries in a car accident early Tuesday in the Dominican Republic. A truck hit a car carrying Marmol, a cousin and a friend in his hometown of Bonao near 2 a.m. The All-Star right-hander had just arrived in the Caribbean nation after the Cubs were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs. Marmol said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the air bag deployed and he only suffered a cut and an "inflammation" of his forehead. "Out of precaution they did different studies on my body, and I don't have any kind of serious injury," he wrote. Let's hope "no serious injury" means "your body is just as it was before" and not "compared to losing your life, not being able to throw a baseball isn't really that serious." 2008-10-07 19:43:00 See you and your pink tissue paper next year, McDreamy So, it's over. Our team failed to show up. Again. Our hearts are broken. Again. And we're all vowing that we need to blow up this team and start over and never, ever, EVER let them do this to us again. Again. At times like this, I think of Bart Giamatti: It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone. So well said. I read it every year, on the day after our season ends. And then ... More About: Diary , Season , Edition , Base , Off Season

2008-10-07 12:53:00 Coaches back From the Herald Times: Hendry will have some housekeeping items to deal with this week. All of field manager Lou Piniella's coaches have been invited back for 2009, and Hendry will meet with them this week. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild is the most high-profile among the coaches, and he survived two years under Piniella, who can be hard on both pitchers and pitching coaches. The other coaches are Alan Trammell (bench), Matt Sinatro (first base), Mike Quade (third base), Gerald Perry (batting) and Lester Strode (bullpen). Ivan DeJesus is a special assistant who is in uniform before games. Say it ain't so, Gordo From the Sun-Times: In the bitter end, the difference might have been Brian Roberts, after all. Maybe he wouldn't have overcome the walks in Game 1 or the errors in Game 2, but the Cubs' woeful lack of playoff hitting comes down to two big deficiencies: First, they have no left-handed hitters whom opponents respect. If you don't believe that, ask yoursel... More About: Open , Tuesday , Headlines , Thread

2008-10-06 14:09:00 Colts decide to not completely ruin my weekend I'm starting out with good news today. And the Bears won, too. From Yahoo: Headed for another early-season loss, Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts staged a stunning comeback thanks to a colossal collapse by the Houston Texans. Manning's late-game poise-and the lack of it for Houston quarterback Sage Rosenfels-helped the Colts scored 21 points in a late span of 2:10. Two touchdowns came thanks to fumbles by Rosenfels, then Indianapolis intercepted Rosenfels' last-ditch comeback attempt for a 31-27 win Sunday. On to baseball Lou thoroughly explains how the Cubs lost. There's also some mention of neither Soriano nor Ramirez showing up. From the Daily Herald. But Piniella seemed to know, or seemed to sense, that his team could be had in the playoffs. Asked after Saturday night's loss if he was shocked, he said no. So how did a team go from scoring 855 runs in the regular season to scoring 6 in three playoff games for the second... More About: Open , Morning , Monday , Headlines , Thread

2008-10-05 00:00:00 On August 27, 1883, the volcano on the island of Krakatoa violently erupted in the most cataclysmic natural disaster in modern history. Ships were rocked from the resulting tsunami as far away as South Africa. The eruption sent ash 80 kilometers into the atmosphere, and created noctilucent clouds that colored sunsets around the world a deep shade of red. Upon seeing the sunset and reflecting upon his own madness and the meaninglessness of existence, Edvard Munch wrote: I was walking along a path with two friends-the sun was setting-suddenly the sky turned blood red-I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence-there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city-my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety-and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature. 2008-10-04 23:01:00 I can't say it any better than this. by Abe Frohman There are no such thing as curses. There is no bad mojo. Black cats, billy goats, foul balls . . . they mean nothing. Either you play well enough to win, or you don't. This team is capable of winning. There is absolutely enough talent in the Cubs' clubhouse to win three games in a row. I actually just did the research, and here's what I found: The Cubs won at least 3 (or more) games in a row 15 times this season. 15 times. And one of those sweeps (May 26-28) was against the Dodgers. Guess how many times the Cubs lost 3 or more to National League opponents? Twice. July 13, 18-19 (around the All-Star Break) to Giants and Astros and then that August 30-Sept 3 slide where they lost 5 in a row to the Phillies and Houston. (NOTE: Thost three games in a row against Houston was the only time this year the Cubs lost 3 in a row to the same NL team.) Conversely, the Dodgers had only eight winning streaks of 3+ games against ei... More About: Talk , Saturday , Serenity , Thread

2008-10-04 13:33:00 Help us, Rich. You're our only hope. Lou is done with verbal communication From the Daily Herald: "This is not time for words anymore. This is time to go out on the field and play to the best of your ability and relax and get the job done. "That's it. It's simple. You go out there and you play the best you possibly can, and you win, and you play on Sunday. And if you don't, as long as you played a good baseball game, that's all you can expect." Unfortunately, Ryan Theriot didn't get the memo: "Our mind-set is we're down two games, and we have to win," shortstop Ryan Theriot said. No shit!? Now, back to Lou: "I've tried to downplay these playoffs where everybody says World Series and this and the other," he said, referring to the notion that the Cubs' year is a disappointment if they don't reach or win the World Series. 2008-10-03 12:50:00 Carl goes to bed, Cubs don't come back From the Daily Herald: The defense let starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano down, committing 2 errors in the Dodgers' 5-run second inning, with DeRosa and first baseman Derrek Lee committing miscues. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who refused to talk after the game, committed a harmless error in the fourth. Shortstop Ryan Theriot completed the dubious cycle with an error in the ninth. "I don't think you can win 97 ballgames playing that way," Piniella said. "It wasn't good baseball. In fact, the last two days, they've probably been the two worst games we've played all year from a walking and errors standpoint. It wasn't fun to watch, I can tell you that." Soriano to nay-sayers: "You're right!" From the Daily Herald: "When I swing at strikes, I hit the ball hard," Soriano said. "When I don't hit the ball hard is when I swing at bad pitches. 2008-10-03 01:30:00 Had enough analysis about that first game yet? Doom and gloom set in for you? Convinced this series is over? Well, this is what I have to say, and this goes for the Cubs fans in a silent Wrigley Field (minus Doc and Co.) last night. The Cubs may well lose this game, and maybe even the next. But fuck all those stats, the loser of Game 1 has gone on to lose 24 of 28 series, the Cubs are 0-fer with Dick Stockton, blahblahblah. Let's just play, and see what happens. Below, I present to you tonight's starter: The Many Faces of Carlos Zambrano He can throw a no-hitter, or give up seven runs in 1.2 innings. He can hit a 462-foot home run or swing mindlessly and break his bat over his knee. He has conversations with himself, or maybe it's with someone else we can't "see." No one really knows who (or what) the Cubs are going to get tonight. A start would be not walking the pitcher (twice). 2008-10-02 15:13:00 "Don't give up any more salamis and we'll be fine" Last I saw of carl, he was drowning his sorrows with a yo ho ho and 8 bottles of beer, so I'll take over headlines today. I guess everyone knows by now that we lost. The Cubs brought a heavy hitter to Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon, asking the Rev. James L. Greanias, a Greek Orthodox priest from St. Iakovos Church in Valparaiso, Ind., to spread holy water around the dugout to remove an alleged curse that has hovered over the ballclub since its last World Series appearance in 1945. But after Ryan Dempster couldn't find the plate and their hitters took another siesta in a 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of their National League Division Series, the Cubs might want to get out of the curse-removal business and concentrate on the game itself. And Steve Rosenbloom points out the obvious: This might not be the end of the world, but Cubs fans can see it from here. The Cubs spent six months working and hitting and pi... Let's Get This Party Started Right: Dodgers @ Cubs 5:30 CDT/6:30 EDT
2008-10-01 23:00:00 Here we go. I was all fired up to write this diary this morning, but, as I sit down to write it, I realize that there really isn't a whole lot left to say. Tonight we send our most consistent pitcher, Ryan Dempster (and if you say that you knew he would be our most consistent pitcher at any time before, say, June, you might want to check your pants, for they are on fire), to the hill against Derek Lowe, who has been more-than-red-hot in the last month. He's been like. . . magenta hot. The good news is that Dempster has more wins at home than any other pitcher in the NL this season. The bad news is that we probably have to listen to Dick Stockton call the game again. Let's up he's gotten that whole "Chicago Cowboys/Dallas Cubs " thing finally worked out. The offensive matchup in this series really comes down to this: we have the best offense in the NL (first in runs scored, second in OBP) and they have Manny. Less than a week after speculation surfaced in New York that Piniella may retire as Cubs manager if they win the World Series, the Cubs on Tuesday picked up their club option on Piniella for the 2010 season. Piniella, 65, signed a three-year, $10 million deal in the fall of 2006. The option year is worth $4 million. The Matchup: Cubs v. Dodgers On Paper
2008-09-30 19:30:00 Be afraid. Be very afraid. (Relax, I'm kidding. I would have said that about any team we were matched with). It's no secret around here that most of us aren't too thrilled with being matched with the Dodgers . Of all the teams that were a possibility, they're the least known quantity, mostly because they are playing like a completely different team now than when we last played them. That said, to ease everyone's minds a little, let's take a look at how we match up with the Dodgers. Today we'll look at pitching, tomorrow at hitting. I promise, it's not really that scary. Well, it's a little scary. Follow me below the jump. The Cubs were 4-2 against the Dodgers this season, with Dempster, Howry (yes HOWRY) and Marquis all recording wins against. 2008-09-30 15:20:00 Bruce Miles gets top spot because he starts his article with a Harry Caray quote From the Daily Herald: When legendary broadcaster Harry Caray sensed that the home team was in trouble, he'd bellow, "There's danger here, Cherie." The Cubs aren't in trouble. With the best record in the National League, they'll be favored to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League division series, which begins Wednesday evening at Wrigley Field. So where's the danger? But the Dodgers present danger on several fronts. Here is a look at some of those areas and how the Cubs can ward off that danger: The Manny factor: Left fielder Manny Ramirez remains one of the most dangerous hitters in the game, and he has 24 postseason home runs. When the Dodgers traded for Ramirez on July 31, they were hoping for an offensive spark. That's just what they got, as Ramirez hit 17 homers, drove in 53 and batted .396 with a .489 on-base percentage and a .743 slugging percentage in 54 games. To avoid the ... 2008-09-29 11:01:00 I couldn't resist Cubs let Brewers make postseason I wonder if this is an attempt to further ruin the pitching arms of Ben Sheets and CC Sabathia. From the Daily Herald: The Cubs went with a pitcher-by-committee system, and it didn't work out badly until late in the game. Angel Guzman started and pitched 2 scoreless innings. The Cubs got an unearned run against Sabathia in the second. Cubs reliever Michael Wuertz walked in a run in the seventh. Howry gave up a one-out single to Mike Cameron in the eighth. After Ray Durham flied out, Braun crushed the first pitch over the wall in left. "No, I was just trying to hit the ball hard," Braun said when asked if he was thinking homer. "We've just got to find a way to continue to play." All in all, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said he was pleased with the overall effort of his pitchers. Just as he did back on Sept. 15 against the Astros at Miller Park, Ted Lilly took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday against this ballpark's rightful tenants, the Milwaukee Brewers. Lilly didn't get the no-hitter, but he got his 17th victory of the season, and a makeshift Cubs lineup knocked off the Brewers 7-3, sending the National League's wild-card race down to the final Sunday - and maybe longer. The Phillies won Saturday to clinch the NL East, but with the Mets winning in New York, both the Mets and the Brewers have 89-72 records. The Cubs will send rookie Angel Guzman to the mound today against Brewers ace CC Sabathia. Lilly was happy to play a part in tightening the race. "We want to win," he said. "We knew that. "We'll get everything back in place. We're doing the best we can, but right now, you've got to have a little patience." There were a couple of things that had Piniella concerned: ? Catcher Geovany Soto left the game in the sixth inning when he fouled off a pitch. He felt some pain in his troublesome left hand but later said he was fine and that he could play this weekend. ? The bullpen got a bit of a beating. Sean Marshall (3-5) took the loss. Jeff Samardzija gave up a single that allowed a run to score. And most worrisome for Piniella, Chad Gaudin balked and gave up a 3-run homer to Rickie Weeks in the seventh inning. 2008-09-26 13:46:00 HoffPOWER From the Daily Herald: The Cubs claim they still have questions heading into the playoffs. They may have found one answer Thursday night in Micah Hoffpauir. Even though the Cubs suffered a 7-6, ninth-inning loss to the New York Mets at rainy Shea Stadium, manager Lou Piniella was gushing about the performance of Hoffpauir, who may have sewn up a spot on the roster for the division series. The 28-year-old rookie went 5-for-5, including his first 2 major-league home runs. Hoffpauir also doubled home a run and singled twice, driving in 5 runs. "Impressive," said Piniella, who always perks up when a young player hits. "We're looking, we really are. We're looking for a couple spots. We're looking for a little offense.
