Monday Morning- Work in Progess Headlines
2008-09-08 15:44:00
Lou is not a happy camper. Even for those who don't believe the Cubs are eternally doomed, Sunday would give them pause. After losing seven of eight games, including Sunday's 4-3 stinker to the Reds, it is understandable that the mentality has evolved into a sky-is-falling September swoon. Can anyone put things in perspective? If manager Lou Piniella could, he certainly didn't try Sunday. He refused to meet with the media for the first time this season. So it was up to team elder Derrek Lee to assess the mood. "We still can't panic," Lee said. "We're still in good shape. We just need to be better. We're a better team than this, and we would like to play better. You don't ever want to play under your talent level, and that's what we're doing right now. "We're in a funk. We're in a skid. We've just got to fight out of it." Could you maybe be in a little less of a funk?  You know, one where you don't lose 2 of 3 to the Reds? For those that missed it Caution: may cause...

If I'm being honest, I watched a combined total of about 8 minutes of Bears pre-season football this season, mostly because when I did watch, it was way too painful and depressing to continue. Our defense looked horrible. Our offense looked. . . well. . . Captain Neckbeard is our starting QB. That should tell you everything you need to know. Oh yeah, and for some reason we let Bernard Berrian walk because Devin Hester is going to be our superstar WR. Score. Since I haven't watched much of our team so far this year, I can't really write intelligently about our chances tonight, but I have a feeling they aren't good. So we'll use this diary as group game support tonight. Colts fans are welcome, but no gloating will be tolerated. If enough people pop in, we might even put up a game chat. (crosses self). Here goes nothing. Bear down! Executive Decision: Max is out of town and I need someone to talk to.

That's more like it Cubs snap into shape A day too late. From the Daily Herald: Cubs manager Lou Piniella issued a warning before Saturday night's 14-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds . "These last 20 games or 21 games, I'm going to try to play a lineup that can win a ballgame that day," he said. "That's all I'm going to do. I've played everybody all year. Everybody's gotten opportunities all year. "And now we're going to try to play a lineup that can win a baseball game that particular night. These guys want to stay in the lineup, swing the bats." It seems the Cubs got the message. One guy who really got it was left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who hit solo homers in the third and fifth innings and followed it with a 3-run blast in the sixth. It was the third time Soriano went deep three times in a game, and it helped the Cubs (86-56) snap a six-game losing streak. The 14 runs matched their amount for the entire six-game skid. More on Lou's new-look lineup Why didn't he try ...

The Cubs are stinky, like my diaper. I'm filling in for Carl today, since he personally decided to help extend the Cubs' losing streak in Cincinnati.  Carl, you are not allowed at any more games this year.  Unless, of course, you've got a great picture of Rich Harden's ass. Lou changes his mind and decides to go to the game instead of visiting secdelahc. From the Trib: "We actually Googled the trip and we were Googled to East Liverpool, Pa., evidently. Who in the heck knows?" Piniella said. "On the [printout] sheet we had Cincinnati-Liverpool. And I'm thinking to myself, I was in Cincinnati for three years and I don't remember a Liverpool around the area." With Sinatro driving, Piniella took a short nap. "When I woke up we were about 80-90 miles from Cleveland. I said no, I don't think so. So we backtracked and came down through Columbus and got here at 5 o'clock. We left Chicago at 8 in the morning so we should have been here at 2 [p.m.] "I probably shouldn't ha...

Ok.  Everyone calm down.  If Major League Baseball resembles anything at the moment, it's slasher films from the 80's, and Cubs fans are acting like the helpless red-shirted dorks who drop their glasses in the rain and thank the person who gives them back, only to find out that they're...The Killer. Hey, as long as we're on the subject of red-shirted, first-to-die-in-movie dopes with glasses... You see what I did there? If you don't follow the Reds that much, you may not have noticed that the Reds traded away two of their best players: Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey, Jr.  Dunn now plays for the Diamondbacks, while Junior is on Chicago's South Side. So I'm not promising anything, but...Corey Patterson has taken over OF duties for Adam Dunn. The Pitchers For the Cubs, it's left-handed Ted Lilly.  With Zambrano hurt, and Rich Harden fragile, the Cubs need Ted Lilly to step up.  Also, it doesn't hurt that he's pitching against Corey Patterson. Ted is a Ca...

Derrek Lee, what's your major malfunction? From the Daily Herald: Consider Lee's numbers: ? His last home run, his 18th, came on Aug. 22. It was his first since July 27. ? He has 3 homers in his last 63 games after hitting 15 in his first 73. Lee's arsenal lately has been mainly singles, a few doubles, and an awful lot of double-play balls. What's going on? Who better to ask than former Cubs great, sweet swinging Billy Williams? The Hall of Famer has been keeping an eye on Lee and doesn't think the first baseman's swing is too far off. "Sometimes you get into a groove and you hit a lot of groundballs," Williams said. "I don't see anything he's doing differently. "He's hitting line drives, too. He might be leaning a bit with his eyes. He's not getting the ball airborne. But you can't steer it, you just hit it." Could it be the lingering effects of the wrist injury Lee suffered a few years back? "I don't think so," Williams said. "He put up some power numbers last year." ...

So we've lost 5 in a row, it appears Harden is hurt, God only knows if Z will pitch again this season. Go ahead and let it out. Let it all out. I'll start. My favorite baseball team is stinky, I have a bad cold, and I have writer's block. And I stubbed my toe on the foot of my bed. Next. UPDATE: Here's the latest from TribCo. The Cubs expect Carlos Zambrano to miss only one start after an MRI Thursday morning revealed inflammation and rotator cuff tendinitis in his right shoulder. Zambrano, who received an anti-inflammatory injection, joined the team on its flight to Cincinnati. "Hopefully by the time we get to St. Louis [Tuesday] he will throw and, if that proceeds in a positive fashion, then he will be ready to start probably by the end of the series in Houston [next weekend]," general manager Jim Hendry said. "So he'll just be missing, hopefully, this one start. Obviously, he'll have to get his strength back from not pitching and once the shot takes its proper course, he'...

The sky is falling From the Trib: In the case of Zany Z and the mysterious missing MRI, no news is not good news. The silence surrounding the pain that is said to be in Carlos Zambrano's valuable right shoulder could speak volumes and the Cubs seemed to be preparing for the worst Wednesday, that Zambrano could be out for a long period, perhaps the rest of the season. Manager Lou Piniella, who served as team spokesman, said he knew little of Zambrano's examination by team orthopedist Stephen Gryzlo, why Zambrano skipped his MRI appointment or how long Zambrano would be out, although Sean Marshall will start in his place Sunday. And Piniella finally revealed what had been suspected all along: That another starter, Rich Harden, "has had some discomfort also." Cubs lose, Dempster tries to give us perspective From the Daily Herald: "It's frustrating for everybody," Dempster said. "It's frustrating for me because I didn't feel I did as good as I could have tonight. It's frustratin...

Jay Mariotti did not read this book. So, which would you like first? Let's start with the bad, followed by the good, on a number of topics. Bad: Still no complete word on Z's shoulder. He had an arm exam today, and will have an MRI tomorrow. What does that mean? Hell if I know. Dammit Jim, I'm not a doctor! Whatever the case, though, it's doubtful he's going to be pitching in the next few weeks. Good: Carlos Zambrano is but one man. Cubs still have a pretty stacked rotation, including tonight's starter, Ryan Dempster. Sean Marshall is expected to take over, and there are definitely worse candidates to have. Bad: The Cubs are mired in a four-game losing streak, and are having a worse time putting it together than John McCain when he found out Bristol Pallin is going the Ariel Moore route and rebelling Good: The Brewers lost again. Everybody know The Brewers for girls! Magic number down to 19, 18 if we decide beating the Astros and sorry-ass Randy Wolf would be a good idea for ...

This is my attempt to distract us all from the last three days. The original case members ruin the new 90210 for everyone: "90210" version 2.0 definitely won't be a reunion show. While Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty are happily reprising their original roles for the spin-off drama, which premiered Tuesday night, no one else from the old-school cast has any interest. Tori Spelling may have been interested before the equal-pay scandal hit the headlines, but she's since said she's out. And '90s heartthrob Luke Perry can't even imagine taking another turn as bad-boy Dylan. Well, how nice for all of you. I will just point out that the last time I saw any of you in anything was Jason getting mangled in a car wreck, Tori in "Mother May I Sleep With Danger?" on the Lifetime network, Shannen getting kicked off "Charmed," and Luke getting stomped by a bull in "8 Seconds," (or however many seconds it was called), so it's not like you guys are burning up the Oscars or anything. Please, Bob, feel free to eat your own shoulder. Z's arm status down(up?)graded from dead to not feeling good From the Trib: Zambrano left Tuesday night's 9-7, 11-inning loss to Houston after five innings and 86 pitches and "told pitching coach [Larry Rothschild] he wasn't feeling good," according to manager Lou Piniella. Wasn't feeling good, as in ... "It has to be in his arm," Piniella said. "I'll let you know [more] tomorrow." Zambrano will visit Cubs orthopedist Stephen Gryzlo on Wednesday , but it's obvious he will be shut down for several days, which would put his effectiveness for the playoffs in doubt. "If he can pitch, he'll pitch," Piniella said. "If not, we'll put [ Sean] Marshall in the rotation and go from there." In case you didn't hear, movie trailer dude extraordinaire Don LaFontaine died today. You know, this guy: First, that sucks. Second, is there a better name in show business than "Don LaFontaine?" Cubs delay 2008 June swoon From the Trib: Marquis (9-8) allowed two runs on five hits over six innings while striking out eight, his highest total as a Cub. But the Cubs' sluggish offense was clueless against Oswalt, and has gone 28 consecutive innings without an extra-base hit since Alfonso Soriano's home run in the eighth inning of Friday's win over Philadelphia. They've hit 27 singles since then, scoring only five runs. Piniella inserted Kosuke Fukudome into the No. 2 hole in an effort to jump-start the struggling right fielder, hoping he'd see a few more fastballs with Lee batting behind him. "It's a good spot to hit in," Piniella said. But Fukudome went 0-for-4, including a ninth-inning force out at second against closer Jose Valverde with runners on first and second and one out. Piniella had red-hot lefty hitter Micah Hoffpauir on the bench and available to pinch-hit, but Piniella opted to stick with Fukudome, who hit .193 in August and came in batting .231 since the Al...

Cubs stink for second day in a row A 20-8 August isn't so bad, I suppose. From the Trib: "There's nothing wrong with the effort," a testy manager Lou Piniella said after Sunday's 5-3 loss. "Give the Phillies credit. We're not supposed to win every day. It's not that easy. "I think we spoiled people and we got people used to [winning]. But every day things don't go your way in this business. That's why you play 162 games, and that's why you play six months." But with their second straight home loss - for only the second time since the opening series - the Cubs had their nine-series winning streak broken. Cubs hitters left 19 men on base in the last two days. Their last 23 hits have been singles, going back to Friday's homer by Alfonso Soriano - and he left four runners on base in his final two at-bats Sunday. "We believe [our] team is very good," Soriano said. "We have to play better. We left a lot of runners in scoring position, so I have to start concentrating a little bit...

You know, good looks will only get you so far. . . I guess I'm up with the headlines this morning, so these are going to be quick. The Cubs don't want us to panic: It was a very rare scene in the Cubs' clubhouse Saturday: Quiet. Usually the stereo is blaring and players are jabbering at each other. But here it was eerily subdued, because the Cubs (gasp) lost a home game. It doesn't happen very often, just 17 times in the last 67 games at Wrigley Field, but this time the Phillies prevailed 5-2 as the Cubs had no comeback to counter them. "It's going to happen," losing pitcher Ted Lilly said. "We play a lot of games and there are a lot of good teams out there." Aramis Ramirez didn't seem overly concerned. "You can't win every single game," he said. "We'll come back [Sunday ] and try to win a series." Technically, you COULD win every game, but I guess you guys choose not to. Hrumph. Lou warns us not to get too excited. .. Others might be giddy over the Cubs' success, but no...

Will the Cubs ever lose again? From the Daily Herald: The postseason is more than a month away, but everything around the Cubs these days is looking, feeling and smelling like the playoffs. Friday's 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field wasn't the prettiest the Cubs have played this year, but they found a way to win and improve to 85-50. They've come from behind to beat the Phillies twice in two days. On Friday, Alfonso Soriano's seventh-inning solo homer broke a 2-2 tie after the Cubs rallied earlier from a 2-0 deficit. While the Cubs are cruising in the National League Central, they're putting some serious hurt on the Phillies, who are in a fight with the Mets for the East lead. "They're a really good team," said Cubs second baseman Mark DeRosa, who had 2 of the Cubs' 7 walks. "These first two games are an indication of what playoff baseball is like when two teams are fighting to get there. We caught some breaks today and were able to come out on top....

Wrigley, shit. I'm still only in Wrigley. Every time I think I'm going to wake up back in  the playoffs. When I was home after last year's playoffs, it was worse. Japanese media fuel Cub victory From the Trib: After turning 65 Thursday, Cubs manager Lou Piniella had but one birthday request. "Get a win," Piniella said late Thursday afternoon. "That's it." Before the game against the Phillies, Piniella was happy to receive a commemorative bottle of sake from the Japanese media that supposedly bestows good luck on whoever receives it. A few hours later, Aramis Ramirez belted a grand slam off Chad Durbin in a five-run eighth inning that turned Wrigley Field upside down and led the Cubs to a 6-4 comeback victory before a crazed crowd of 40,362. Lou pushes all the right buttons Speaking of all the right buttons, last night I got to see the Simpsons episode where Homer goes to college. From the Daily Herald: Late in the seventh inning Thursday, Cubs manager Lou Piniella sent Jim Edmonds to the on-deck circle to pinch-hit in the No. 9 spot, but Phillies starter Cole Hamels recorded the third out before Edmonds got to the plate. I'll play first, third, left. I'll play anywhere - except Philadelphia. Richie Allen The Phillies come into Chicago today with a strange combinations of factors working for and against them.  The had a great comeback win on Tuesday against the Mets, but then lost night and are now a half game behind the Mets in the NL East.  You probably can't rely on another Mets collapse like last year, so the Phillies what to pick up some ground at the Cubs expense. Then there their short stop, Jimmy Rollins, who can't seem to keep his mouth shut.  First he made a few semi-controversial, but highly accurate comments, about how the fans in Philadelphia are, um, lets say tough, on their players.  This wouldn't have been quite so bad if Rollins hadn't been slumping at the time, but he was and you can't be bad and stupid in Philly.  He broke out of it a bit during the Mets series, (unfortunately for us) but then, in an attempt to take some of it back he said the fol...

True Grit Cubs decide to beat Pirates via small ball From the Daily Herald: Johnson got things going in the seventh, when he caught third baseman Andy LaRoche playing back and laid down a leadoff bunt single. "I saw that he was back, and usually in a 2-0 situation, I was going to hit," Johnson said. "I didn't get pitch that I liked so I kind of glanced at him on the 2-1 pitch, and he was in the same spot, and he wasn't moving. So I decided it was a good opportunity to get on base, especially leading off the inning there." Mark DeRosa doubled to left, moving Johnson to third. Johnson then read the play on Cedeno's groundout to third and scampered home. Blanco put down the suicide squeeze. "It was like a perfect situation," Blanco said. "We hadn't scored a run all day long, and we had a situation where we could squeeze him. We've got a great offense, but we can do the little things to win ballgames. That's what we did today." Garsh! The Cubs pitching gave me scurvy last night! Luckily, the Pirates ' bullpen surrenders like the French Arrrrrmy! Although the Cubs already have the series win, might as well go for all three. And that's a good chance, since they have...wait a minute.. JASON MARRRRRRQUIS! Oh Noz!! The bats will have to be hot again. Last time out, Marquis was staked to a 4-0 lead against one of the worst teams in baseball. Game in hand, right? Think again. This is Jason Marquis we're talking about. He turned into complete crap during an inning, walked a ton of batters and gave up four runs, then handed it over to a shocked bullpen, who gave up another nine runs. Damn you Marquis. For the Pirates, it's Zach Duke, who has pitched against the Cubs four times this season. In three of those starts, he's given up four runs or more, so hopefully that will continue, as again, this could be another high-scoring game. It's a question of whether this game will get in or not. The man of the hour, the man with the power The good, the bad and the ugly From the Daily Herald: The good: Catcher Geovany Soto had a career night with 7 RBI, capped by a 3-run double in a 7-run eighth inning. The Cubs reached double figures in runs for the second straight night, improving to 82-50, putting them 32 games over .500 for the first time since Sept. 15, 1984. The bad: Starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano saw his August ERA rise to a not-so-august 7.42 by giving up 8 hits and 6 runs in 4 innings. Zambrano also engaged in some of his on-field and in-dugout histrionics, jumping around on the mound and taking out his frustration once again on a pair of Gatorade coolers in the dugout. "We've had some - some - I don't know what the word is - here in Pittsburgh - we've had some long games," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. The ugly: Left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who had a key misplay here earlier in the year, dropped a ball in the Pirates' 2-run sixth while hopping to make ...

The Pirates are countering with Ian Snell.  He's you know, Ian Snell.  He has wtice as many losses as wins, doesn't have a great ERA, and 6 guys are batting .500 or better against him this season.   So that's it, check the side for links and such, lineups to come.

Edmonds, Fukudome forget they're slumping From the Daily Herald: It was a coming-out party of sorts for a couple of previously slumping hitters. Center fielder Jim Edmonds (3-for-5) broke an 0-for-18 dry spell with a triple in the second inning, and he came home on a sacrifice fly by Kosuke Fukudome, the other hitter who hasn't been heard from in awhile. Fukudome, apparently a fast study after working on his swing the past two days, singled twice, doubled and drove in a career-high 4 runs. On Sunday, he came off the bench to hit a pinch homer after working to shorten his stride. "During BP (batting practice), I was able to work on that pretty good, but in the game I don't think I was able to incorporate it 100 percent," Fukudome said through his translator. "It's great to have 3 hits today, but today's over. It's a different game. It starts tomorrow, so I need to keep working at it." Piniella had a simple explanation for the quick results. "When you're a good hitter, you can...

Why does Julie hate this man? And America? So tonight we head into PNC, a ballpark way better than its team deserves, to take on the lowly Pirates . What is there to say about this matchup that hasn't already been said this season? We're good, they're bad. Blah blah blah. But I want to talk about something else. Something that's probably not going to make many of you very happy. The problem of what to do with our 1st baseman. Outside of Z, he's probably the most popular Cub on the team. Everyone (hearts) him. He's intelligent, a quiet leader, seems like an all around great guy. Has a butt that's up there with Rich Harden's. But kids, we have a problem. "A problem?" You probably say. "The guys is hitting .290 with an .828 OPS! And you think there's a problem? Why, any team would be proud to have such a player on their team!" Well, that's probably true. But consider that this is the lowest OPS Lee has had since 2001. His OPS and his average has declined every season since 2...

Raise your hand if you're Sure!
