Sunday Night Game Thread: Deadbirds vs Cubs 8:05 EDT, 7:05 CDT
2008-08-11 01:06:00 I'm supposed to tell you this shirt is clean and it's just the shadows from my camera phone. Think what you will. Tonight is the rubber game of the latest installment of Good vs. Evil. Tonight, our beloved Cubs will play and epic battle, er, game, against those evil Redbirds from St. Louis. I'm crying on the inside at the thought of facing the Cubs. Pitching for the Deadbirds is Chris Carpenter, who is making his third start after Tommy John surgery. Carpenter has allowed 1 run in nine innings in his three starts, striking out 4 and walking 2. This image is courtesy of the Heckler. Don't sue me. Up for the Cubs tonight is one Ryan Scott Dempster. Following a tough, rain-shortened loss in his last outing (where he gave up 2 runs in 5 innings), Ryan looks to pound the Cardinals into submission. And now, here are some memorable moments in Cubs-Cardinals history: 1. Who could forget the Sandberg game? One game in particular was cited for ... More About: Night , Sunday , Game , Thread

2008-08-10 14:46:00 Yeah, I know, me too Cubs, um, don't win Z gets hit, hard, and Wellemeyer ends up with the win Schumaker and Albert Pujols homered in the third to give St. Louis a 3-1 lead. Zambrano hit an opposite-field homer off Wellemeyer, his third of the year, to pull the Cubs within a run. But Aramis Ramirez grounded into a double play to end the inning with two men on. Then Zambrano gave up a two-run shot to Glaus in the fourth. snip Piniella had Sean Marshall warming up in the fourth but opted to leave Zambrano in. That decision backfired when Zambrano started the fifth with a walk to Pujols, and back-to-back singles to Ryan Ludwick and Felipe Lopez that made it 6-2. Glaus then smoked a 1-1 pitch into the right-field bleachers for a three-run homer to make Zambrano and the Cubs toast. Everyone REALLY wants to win tonight gotta save the series at all costs The Cubs haven't lost a series at Wrigley Field since June, when the Baltimore Orioles took two of three in an interleague meeting. 2008-08-09 14:55:00 Cubs Win! Cubs Win! And it was a beauty It was a line single to left with the bases loaded by backup catcher Henry Blanco that sealed the deal, but before that the Cubs got a another great start from Ted Lilly, shutdown work by Carlos Marmol, Jeff Samardzija and Bob Howry out of the bullpen, 2 more home runs by Jim Edmonds, and enough quality defensive plays to fill an ESPN Web Gems segment. "That's why we call it a team," said Blanco, who replaced Geovany Soto in the 10th inning. "Every day it's going to be nine guys that go out there, but at some point in the season all 25 count. That's what this team is all about." and all those Hank White fans have friends in the clubhouse Few Cubs sit more than Blanco with Soto in the midst of a rookie-of-the-year season, but the veteran catcher is considered a pro's pro in the eyes of his teammates. "It's so great to see him get involved, too," Lilly said. "He's such an underrated asset on this ballclub, I really believe that, in a lot ... Game Thread: Cardinals @ Cubs: 1:20 P.M CT/2:20 P.M. ET: There Will Be Bloo
2008-08-08 18:30:00 Following a 3-6 start after the All-Star Break, the Chicago Cubs have gone 9-2 in their last 11 games and sit atop the National League Central by 5 games. But in case you were feeling complacent, the Cubs face their hated rival St. Louis Cardinals this afternoon, with Ted Lilly on the mound. Ted does his own pitching and the men that play defense for him, work for him and they are men he knows. Ted makes it his business to be there and see to their work. He doesn't lose any of his five tools in Iowa and spend months fishing for them; he doen't botch the cementing off and let Pujols ruin the whole lease. I assure you, whatever the others promise to do, when it comes to the showdown, they won't be there. Ted will be. There's a whole ocean of Cardinals under our feet! No one can get at it except for the Cubs! There Will Be Pitchers For the Cubs, it's Ted Lilly. After his rough start, it's great to see Ted getting in the groove. He's 6-2 since June, fol... 2008-08-08 14:41:00 Ayyyyyy Cubs recognize importance of weekend series From the Trib: So how important is this weekend's three-game series against the Cardinals, who are making the first visit to Wrigley Field this season only six games behind the Cubs in third place? "It's a series that could really put them in a bind," Mark DeRosa said. On the other hand, the Cubs could find themselves bunched back up with the Cardinals and Brewers, making the final 12 days of the season-when they play the Cardinals three times and the Brewers six (including the last three in Milwaukee)-the most important. "People say this is July or August, that it's not the end of the year, that this isn't that big of a series, but really it is," Ryan Dempster said. "They're always big when you play in your own division and especially against a team that's chasing you in standings. "Why do those games mean any less than any other games? You ultimately want to win as many games as possible." ... Any games against the Cardin... More About: Open , Morning , Friday , Headlines , Thread
Off-Day Challenge: Look in the Mirror, Cubs Fans
2008-08-07 18:35:00 It's a Bandwagon! Get it?? Okay, it's starting to dawn upon me that we have a couple of soul-searching decisions we are going need to make as Cubs fans. These are personal decisions, and each fan must decide his (or her) own conscience. But end result will define how Cubs fans - as a group - are defined. The first is: What to do about the bandwagon fans? They're starting to come out in force, and it's just going to get worse. A lot worse. But how they are received will speak volumes about true Cubs fans. As some of you know, I am not a life-long Cubs fan. I'm not even a life-long Illinoisan (is that what we're called?) I've been here about five years, and I have embraced Chicagoland with my whole being. I feel like this should have been my hometown, and after living in eight different cities in five different states, this is the only place I would ever call home. I am a lifelong baseball fan. A hardcore baseball fan. And, as a traditionalist and devotee of ballparks, the Cu... More About: Fans , Challenge , Mirror

2008-08-07 13:22:00 Cub offense resurgent From the Daily Herald: The Cubs added 2 more in the fourth and cruised to an 11-4 victory at Wrigley Field, taking this series two games to one. The victory improved the Cubs' record to 69-46 and kept them 5 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. "Our lineup 1-8 - and even our pitchers can swing the bat - but our lineup 1-8, it's tough," said DeRosa, who has 2 grand slams among his 12 homers this year. "There's not much room for error there. We've got a lot of guys who are capable of leaving the park with one swing. We've got a lot of guys who know their roles and work to get on base. It's a tough lineup to deal with." Manager Lou Piniella, whose team just finished a stretch of 20 games in 20 days, pointed to several reasons for the resurgence, which came about after a 2-4 trip after the break. For the season, the Cubs have outscored their opponents 615-472. "I said all along when we were in that Houston-Arizona road trip that once we got Soriano back in ... Game Thread; Astros at Cubs, 2:20 p.m. EDT/1:20 CT: Marquis is pitching? Cr
2008-08-06 18:28:00 I'm a people person!! The Cubs have won eight out of their last nine non-rain shortened games. The one loser has been, of course, Jason Marquis . Even though he gave a quality start, it was the max you could do. Marquis is now 0-4 in his last six starts, and hasn't recorded a win since mid-June. It's now August, if you're wondering. Now, I'm not saying Jason Marquis is a bad pitcher. Wait. Yes I am. He's bad. Smoke and mirrors. I truly believe the only reason Jason Marquis is on the roster is for luck purposes. Since Marquis has started his major league career, every team he's been on has made it to the postseason. Look it up. When you haven't won a World Series in a century, I guess you'll try anything. I mean, come on. Zambrano, Lilly, Harden, Dempster...and Marquis. He's like the fifth Beatle. Or the fifth Monkee. Or the fifth Door. Those guys rocked it out with four members. Maybe the Cubs should as well. This is no great quintet. The good news for the Cubs is ... More About: Game , Astros , Thread

2008-08-06 13:02:00 We had so much fun with Reed's curtain call, I thought we'd try it again. Fonzi reminds you that he's pretty good From the Daily Herald: Soriano had 4 RBI, moving his season total to 52. Over his last 10 games, he has multiple hits in five and is 18-for-43 with 2 doubles, 5 homers and 11 RBI. So how much does he mean? "He changes the game with one swing," said second baseman Mark DeRosa. "He's one of the big superstars in the game. We feed off those guys. I think more so than his ability to hit the ball out of the ballpark, he loosens us up as a team. He's a huge part of who we are." Soriano's big homer was his 20th, giving him seven straight seasons of 20 homers. He shrugged off the praise of his teammates. "I don't know," he said. "The more important thing now is my legs are good, my hands are good. I can do whatever I can do to help he team win. I'm happy to be back in the lineup." And Lou, what the hell were you thinking leaving Howry in against Carlos Lee? The Astros... More About: Open , Morning , Headlines , Thread , Wednesday

2008-08-05 19:30:00 Rain Rain go away, come again some other day. (Just not this weekend, I have beach plans) Gray skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face Yesterday's loss was annoying in the way only a shortened game can be. But with a number of regular starters getting the day off it wasn't as painful as it could have been. Hopefully most will be back today, although there are rumors of Soto getting the day off. Up for the Astros today is Wandy Rodriguez. His ERA has been steadily increasing over the last 2 months, and last week he gave up 5 runs in just 4 and 2/3 to the Reds. No offense to his parents, but Wandy doesn't really strike me with fear. The Cubs are countering with my favorite smirking smile Rich Harden. After a few good outings with double digit strikeouts in each and no win to show for it Harden took a slightly different approach. With only 9 strikeouts, he pitched a little longer into the game, and bribed Jim Edmond... More About: Game , Central , Tuesday

2008-08-05 12:07:00 Cubs lose in monsoon From the Trib: By the time the last, loud bolt of lightning hit around 11:13 Monday night, Lance Berkman had seen, heard and felt enough. "I've never played a game before where I was fearful for my life," the Houston Astros first baseman said before running off the field and taking his team with him. It seemed to matter little to either the Cubs or the Astros that Houston walked away with a rain-shortened 2-0 victory on the most bizarre night in recent memory at Wrigley Field. Lightning halted play with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, and a second batch of heavy rain finally washed this one away. "It actually looked like somebody stood above the the stadium with a Zip-Loc bag and opened it up," said Cubs starting itcheer Ryan Dempster, who wound up taking the loss after pitching 5 innings. The first rainstorm hit at 7:39 p.m., halting play with the Astros coming up in the sixth inning already ahead 2-0. About a half-hour after that, the rain seemed... 2008-08-04 22:32:00 I would love to have one of these. You know, except for with today's date. Tonight, our first-place Cubs (67-45) take on those despicable middle-of-the-pack Astros (53-57). The Astros just finished off a sweep of the Mets at Shea. Which would be more impressive if the Mets were, you know, consistent. Pitching for Houston tonight is Brian Moehler, who in his last outing gave up two runs in 8 2/3 IP. My name is Brian Moehler, and I like hockey. I'm a douche. Going for the Cubs is our 2008 Hometown Hero: Ryan Scott Dempster. Dempster just won his second road start of the year last week, and has a 0.86 ERA since the All-Star break. I'll use my Jedi mind tricks to win. You don't have a chance against me Fun tidbits from previous matchups: 1. Michael Barrett charged Roy Oswalt in 2004. 2008-08-04 12:20:00 For Reed's a jolly good fellow Wild and wacky day at Wrigley From the Trib: With the Cubs trailing 2-0 after Brandon Moss' solo home run, Soto went to the mound seemingly to calm Zambrano. But instead of telling Zambrano to calm down, Soto just moved his lips and said absolutely nothing. "He just went out there and was standing out there," Zambrano said. "That was kind of funny. He was moving his chin and looked like he was talking, but he wasn't saying nothing." Soto's routine apparently worked, and Zambrano retired the final 11 batters he faced. The Cubs tied it off Ian Snell in the second on Soto's RBI single to right and a run-scoring double-play grounder by Zambrano. They took a two-run lead in the fourth on three straight doubles by Jim Edmonds, Soto and Zambrano. After Ramirez's solo homer in the fifth made it 5-1, Zambrano said "it was my idea" to come out of the game after only 82 pitches. "I was mentally prepared to go five or six innings," Zambrano said. 2008-08-03 18:30:00 Watch as the Pirates attempt not to stick something in their eye Today's the third and final installment of Pirates @ Cubs , early August 2008. We'll slip into clich? mode and call it the rubber game, mostly because I giggle when I hear the word rubber. On the mound for the Pirates is Ian Snell, of the 6.04 ERA and 1.88 WHIP. Ian Snell is peace-loving and popular with the ladies (or at least two ladies). As you may have been able to tell by his ERA and WHIP, Snell's not doing so well this year, but he won his last game, and John Russell thinks he's back in business: "We know he can pitch," Russell said of Snell, who also won for just the second time in 18 outings. "He's proven it. He's just had a tough time this year. It was nice to see him win (Monday night). That's what we've been looking for. Hopefully, it's a turning point." Hoping to avoid said turning point is Alfonso Soriano, who's fared well against Snell in his career, to the tune of 6-12 and 3 HR. Going fo... More About: Sunday

2008-08-03 15:57:00 Lou helps Cubs learn to harness power of wind From the Trib: The winds of change swept through Wrigley Field after the 2006 season when Lou Piniella replaced Dusty Baker as Cubs manager. And though Piniella has no control over the wind trends at Wrigley, the difference in how his Cubs teams have performed with the wind blowing in is in stark contrast to Baker's record in the same category. Aided by a cool breeze blowing in from right field Saturday, Ted Lilly (11-6) avoided the long ball while pitching the Cubs to a 5-1 victory over Pittsburgh. "The wind was blowing in, and it was cool," Piniella said. "I hope it stays just like this." The victory left the Cubs with a 23-6 record with the wind blowing in at Wrigley this year and a .676 winning percentage (48-23) with the wind blowing in over the last two seasons. In comparison, the Cubs played at a .477 clip (83-91) with the wind blowing in at Wrigley during Baker's tenure from 2003-06. Lou loves Lilly From the Daily Herald: "He... 2008-08-02 13:25:00 Cubs turn Karstens into Cy Young candidate From the Daily Herald: Pittsburgh pitcher Jeff Karstens, making just his 10th career start and the first in the National League, held the Cubs scoreless on 5 hits over 6 innings, and three relievers sealed a 3-0 victory for the Pirates in front of 41,340 frustrated fans at Wrigley Field. Was Friday's poor showing a classic letdown by the Cubs after an intense series? "I can't say 100 percent that we didn't have a letdown, but you definitely have to give that kid credit," Jim Edmonds said of Karstens. "It would be a shame not to give him the credit that he deserves." A 25-year-old right hander, Karstens' previous major-league experience consisted of 9 starts with the Yankees over the span of two seasons. He entered Friday's game with a career record of 3-5 and a 5.65 ERA, and he'd never faced anyone in the Cubs' starting lineup, which proved to be a problem for the division leaders, The Cubs left the bases loaded against Karstens in ... 2008-08-01 12:16:00 Cubs spank Brewers From the Daily Herald: "It's July 31 today," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella, whose team improved to a season-best 21 games over .500 at 65-44. "We've got baseball to be played in August, in September. But certainly, coming in here and beating a good opponent in their own ballpark four times is something to feel good about. "Oh, I don't know about statements. We came in here knowing that Milwaukee was playing solid baseball. We came in here with a purpose in mind, to win some baseball games, and that's exactly what we did." Although the Cubs didn't make a trade before Thursday's nonwaiver deadline, they won with two players who weren't here at the start of the season. Pitcher Rich Harden, picked up in early July in a trade with Oakland, won his first game as a Cub after 3 tough-luck starts. 2008-07-31 18:10:00 Dear Cubs offense, Salutations. I've greatly enjoyed my time here so far in Chicago. Everyone seems really nice and it's a winning atmosphere. All in all, good times. I think I've done well for you guys, striking out at least 10 batters in every appearance since I've donned the pinstripes. My velocity is there (thankyouverymuch) and I've pretty much put this team in position to win whenever I've left. So, one small request. SCORE SOME RUNS FOR ME! Dave Bush is going for the Brewers . In another case of being Yosted, the bumbling manager is using Bush at home and Seth McClung on the road, meaning lots of time off between starts if Milwaukee goes away for a while. Yeah, no idea. 2008-07-31 12:11:00 Cubs appear to be back on track From the Daily Herald: "A week or so ago, we were all talking about, 'Are we going to come out of this thing?' " Johnson said of a recent team hitting slump. "We didn't know when it was going to be. But I think that just the emotions and the adrenaline of the series probably is what really locked us back in and got everybody swinging the bats really well." The Cubs didn't hit a home run, and they left 15 runners on base, but they bunched hits at the key times and got some good heads-up play. And all that's to say nothing of the job turned in by starting pitcher Ryan Dempster, who worked 7 innings of 5-hit, 1-run ball to run his record to 12-4 with a 2.90 ERA. "I think if you look at the last few games, we've been real aggressive, throwing a lot of strikes," Dempster said. "Sheets was falling apart last night, and the manager didn't go out once to talk to him? He sure yosted that game away." Said it before and I'll say it again: No matter how well the Brewers play, Ned Yost is going to be their downfall. I might even trust Dusty more than him. Well, maybe not. After two stellar games, the Cubs look to keep Big Mo going, sending out Captain Canada, Ryan Dempster, against Manny Parra. Dempster had suffered some bad luck on the road, but that ended two starts ago when he finally got a road win. So maybe his luck is changing. Also, in four of his last five starts, Demp has given up two or fewer runs. Manny Parra has been quite the surprise for Milwaukee; many say he has top potential for the future. 2008-07-28 12:33:00 Cubs remember how to hit From the Trib: "The good thing is that our bats came alive," manager Lou Piniella said. "Let's hope they travel well to Milwaukee." Piniella's Cubs were back in first place by a full game as they packed their bats for a four-game series against the Brewers starting Monday night. They haven't been out of first place since May 10. Of course, facing Florida's Rick VandenHurk at Wrigley Field is not quite as challenging as facing CC Sabathia at Miller Park. But the 12 hits, including a three-run homer by Alfonso Soriano and a three-run double by pinch-hitter Mike Fontenot, gave the Cubs some momentum. "It was a good game for us; we needed that one," said Derrek Lee, whose 2-for-5 day included a game-tying homer in a four-run seventh inning. "We needed to score some runs. We were not getting much going, so it was nice to see some excitement on the bench, guys high-fiving." Fontenot, whose seventh-inning double made a winner of reliever Chad Gaudin, said: "He... 2008-07-27 19:00:00 This pretty much sums up the way I feel about this team and yesterday's game I don't want to talk about yesterday's game. So instead, I'm going to talk about the LOHO get-together. After most of the crew met up at Murphy's, I stayed behind to wait for flyball while eveyone else left to grab seats in the right field bleachers. This wound up being a good move, as flyball and I walked under CF and right by the batting cages where McDreamy, Reedz, E6, and Fotnenot were taking BP under the stands. Harden dominates, gets another no decision From the Daily Herald: Harden became the first Cub to record 10 strikeouts in his first three games with the Cubs. Only Kerry Wood and Mark Prior have ever had three straight starts with 10 strikeouts. All that and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee. All that - plus a Milwaukee win over Houston on Saturday night - gets the Cubs a share of first place in the National League Central, which is where they sit for the first time since May 25 after wasting another dominating - and short - effort by Harden. Harden left with the lead, only to watch Florida come back to beat the Cubs 3-2 in 12 innings in front of 41,471 at Wrigley Field. He allowed 1 run in 5 innings. After throwing 112 pitches against Arizona on Monday, manager Lou Piniella pulled Harden after 87 pitches Saturday. "We wanted to shorten him up a little bit and we did," Piniella said. In 3 starts since coming over from the A's, Harden has 30 strikeouts... More About: Open , Sunday , Headlines , Thread 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
