Phils at Cubs Gamethread 7:05 CDT/ 6:05 EDT
2008-08-29 00:00:00 I'll play first, third, left. I'll play anywhere - except Philadelphia. Richie Allen The Phillies come into Chicago today with a strange combinations of factors working for and against them. The had a great comeback win on Tuesday against the Mets, but then lost night and are now a half game behind the Mets in the NL East. You probably can't rely on another Mets collapse like last year, so the Phillies what to pick up some ground at the Cubs expense. Then there their short stop, Jimmy Rollins, who can't seem to keep his mouth shut. First he made a few semi-controversial, but highly accurate comments, about how the fans in Philadelphia are, um, lets say tough, on their players. This wouldn't have been quite so bad if Rollins hadn't been slumping at the time, but he was and you can't be bad and stupid in Philly. He broke out of it a bit during the Mets series, (unfortunately for us) but then, in an attempt to take some of it back he said the fol...

2008-08-28 14:46:00 True Grit Cubs decide to beat Pirates via small ball From the Daily Herald: Johnson got things going in the seventh, when he caught third baseman Andy LaRoche playing back and laid down a leadoff bunt single. "I saw that he was back, and usually in a 2-0 situation, I was going to hit," Johnson said. "I didn't get pitch that I liked so I kind of glanced at him on the 2-1 pitch, and he was in the same spot, and he wasn't moving. So I decided it was a good opportunity to get on base, especially leading off the inning there." Mark DeRosa doubled to left, moving Johnson to third. Johnson then read the play on Cedeno's groundout to third and scampered home. Blanco put down the suicide squeeze. "It was like a perfect situation," Blanco said. "We hadn't scored a run all day long, and we had a situation where we could squeeze him. We've got a great offense, but we can do the little things to win ballgames. That's what we did today." 2008-08-27 17:30:00 Garsh! The Cubs pitching gave me scurvy last night! Luckily, the Pirates' bullpen surrenders like the French Arrrrrmy! Although the Cubs already have the series win, might as well go for all three. And that's a good chance, since they have...wait a minute.. JASON MARRRRRRQUIS! Oh Noz!! The bats will have to be hot again. Last time out, Marquis was staked to a 4-0 lead against one of the worst teams in baseball. Game in hand, right? Think again. This is Jason Marquis we're talking about. He turned into complete crap during an inning, walked a ton of batters and gave up four runs, then handed it over to a shocked bullpen, who gave up another nine runs. Damn you Marquis. For the Pirates, it's Zach Duke, who has pitched against the Cubs four times this season. In three of those starts, he's given up four runs or more, so hopefully that will continue, as again, this could be another high-scoring game. It's a question of whether this game will get in or not. It's supposed to rain ... More About: Thread

2008-08-27 13:13:00 The man of the hour, the man with the power The good, the bad and the ugly From the Daily Herald: The good: Catcher Geovany Soto had a career night with 7 RBI, capped by a 3-run double in a 7-run eighth inning. The Cubs reached double figures in runs for the second straight night, improving to 82-50, putting them 32 games over .500 for the first time since Sept. 15, 1984. The bad: Starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano saw his August ERA rise to a not-so-august 7.42 by giving up 8 hits and 6 runs in 4 innings. Zambrano also engaged in some of his on-field and in-dugout histrionics, jumping around on the mound and taking out his frustration once again on a pair of Gatorade coolers in the dugout. "We've had some - some - I don't know what the word is - here in Pittsburgh - we've had some long games," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. The ugly: Left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who had a key misplay here earlier in the year, dropped a ball in the Pirates' 2-run sixth while hopping to make ... More About: Headlines , Thread , Wednesday

2008-08-27 00:06:00 Aye matey, we be dealing with those untrustworthy boys from Pittsburgh tonight. So best be preparing to take the ship by force, and use arrrrgh in unnecessary ways. With a little help from Pirate Jokes Q. What did the pirate get on the test? A. high sea! Q Where does the pirate put his cows? A In the BARNicle! Q What do you call a pirate with two eyes and two legs? A Rookie! Ok onto the game. Big Z is taking the mound for the Cubs . Oddly all the talk on him is about his batting since he's hit in 7 consecutive starts. I'm hoping for another good outing, maybe one that does not include spitting a tooth out in the middle of an inning. The Pirates are countering with Ian Snell. He's you know, Ian Snell. He has wtice as many losses as wins, doesn't have a great ERA, and 6 guys are batting .500 or better against him this season. So that's it, check the side for links and such, lineups to come. 2008-08-26 15:17:00 Edmonds, Fukudome forget they're slumping From the Daily Herald: It was a coming-out party of sorts for a couple of previously slumping hitters. Center fielder Jim Edmonds (3-for-5) broke an 0-for-18 dry spell with a triple in the second inning, and he came home on a sacrifice fly by Kosuke Fukudome, the other hitter who hasn't been heard from in awhile. Fukudome, apparently a fast study after working on his swing the past two days, singled twice, doubled and drove in a career-high 4 runs. On Sunday, he came off the bench to hit a pinch homer after working to shorten his stride. "During BP (batting practice), I was able to work on that pretty good, but in the game I don't think I was able to incorporate it 100 percent," Fukudome said through his translator. "It's great to have 3 hits today, but today's over. It's a different game. It starts tomorrow, so I need to keep working at it." Piniella had a simple explanation for the quick results. "When you're a good hitter, you can... More About: Open , Morning , Tuesday , Headlines , Thread

2008-08-25 22:50:00 Why does Julie hate this man? And America? So tonight we head into PNC, a ballpark way better than its team deserves, to take on the lowly Pirates . What is there to say about this matchup that hasn't already been said this season? We're good, they're bad. Blah blah blah. But I want to talk about something else. Something that's probably not going to make many of you very happy. The problem of what to do with our 1st baseman. Outside of Z, he's probably the most popular Cub on the team. Everyone (hearts) him. He's intelligent, a quiet leader, seems like an all around great guy. Has a butt that's up there with Rich Harden's. But kids, we have a problem. "A problem?" You probably say. "The guys is hitting .290 with an .828 OPS! And you think there's a problem? Why, any team would be proud to have such a player on their team!" Well, that's probably true. Harden still good From the Daily Herald: Pitcher Rich Harden took advantage of a cool day with the wind howling in as he tamed the Washington Nationals over 7 innings as the Cubs moved to 30 games over .500 at 80-50 with a 6-1 victory. Harden allowed only 2 hits and reached double digits in strikeouts for the fifth time as a Cub as he tied a career best by fanning 11 Nationals, using his overpowering fastball and a wicked changeup. Although he allowed a leadoff homer to Austin Kearns in the third, Harden also let the breeze do its work, recording 4 flyball outs. And he's nice enough to give Soto credit: "I've definitely got to give a lot of credit to Soto," Harden said. "We've been working pretty well together. I feel really comfortable with him behind the plate. Really, it comes down to mixing up pitches and keeping hitters off balance, keeping them guessing. He's done a great job with that." 2008-08-23 18:00:00 Hey, 2008 Cubs . Wow, what a season, right? I mean, you guys are like a billion games over .500, leading the league in just about every offensive category, and doing a bang-up job of holding off the Brewers and the Cards. Good on ya, team. Couldn't be prouder! Except for one thing. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I can't help but notice that you guys lost to the Nats yesterday. I don't know if you've heard, what with your busy schedule of dominating the NL Central and all, but they're pretty bad this year. I mean like really bad. 2008-08-23 12:08:00 That's right, Chad. Hide your face in shame. Cubs ruin Maim's day From the Daily Herald: The Nats scored in every inning from the sixth through the ninth, taking the first of this three-game series. "Yeah, from my perspective, it was a pretty good ballgame for five innings," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella, whose team is 2-2 on this homestand against losing teams Cincinnati and Washington. Instead of making hay, the Cubs had a haymaker thrown at them, and Piniella knew why. "You can't walk three people there in the (sixth) inning with leads," he said. "They're going to score, and that's exactly what happened." So much, also, for Piniella's plan to give Marquis extra rest - Marquis' last start was Aug. 13 - to keep his arm "fresh." Marquis didn't give up a hit until the fourth, but he allowed 2 hits and 2 walks in the sixth. "I don't have an explanation," Piniella said, not wanting to go any further. 2008-08-22 08:55:00 Tooth decay be damned If you were too lazy to read my game recap diary, here's some more on yesterday's game. The main drama involved a cracked tooth. From the Trib: Even baseball skeptics-and those who doubt the tooth fairy exists-would have a hard time denying this seems to be a special season for the Cubs. Or, as manager Lou Piniella labeled the latest lunacy: "That's just a little Cubbie Occurrence." There have been several "occurrences" this season, but what happened to starter Carlos Zambrano during Thursday's 3-2 victory over Cincinnati leaves those skeptics with something to chew on. As Zambrano warmed up for the fifth inning, trainer Mark O'Neal noted that he "made a grimace." O'Neal rushed out and fans were left holding their breath, but before Piniella made it to the mound, the situation had been corrected. And it was nothing to spit at. Zambrano had cracked an upper right molar but quickly spit it out and proceeded to complete seven innings of one-run ball as th... More About: Open , Morning , Friday , Headlines , Thread
Thursday 8/21 Game Recap; Cubs 3, Reds 2
2008-08-22 02:46:00 Sorry for you, Korey Today, your Chicago Cubs avoided looking like complete arses, defeating the Reds 3-2 and coming away with the 2-1 series win. I can only imagine the collective shudder after the first batter of the game, Chris Dickerson walked on 4 pitches. Chris Dickerson = Eric's son? You decide Apparently Big Z had a Big Z moment and got it together (from the AP, via Yahoo): Carlos Zambrano delivered a heated first-inning lecture to someone he knew would listen-himself. Upset after giving up a four-pitch walk to leadoff batter Chris Dickerson, Zambrano calmed down, regrouped and got out of the inning. The Cubs' ace also overcame a sore tooth, and homered on Thursday to finally get his 13th victory as Chicago beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2. "I was talking to myself. I told myself, 'Is it that hard to throw strikes? Come on, let's go,"' Zambrano said. "I would rather have people go out there and hit home runs than walk somebody. I hate walks." So do we, Carlos, so do we. A... More About: Game , Recap

2008-08-21 11:49:00 Bleurgh Cubs ruin cubbiejulie's night From the Daily Herald: On the second straight night with the wind blowing in, the Cubs needed to do a lot of little things right, much as they did in Tuesday's 5-0 victory over the Reds. It didn't happen Wednesday, and you didn't have to read too much between the lines to see where Piniella was directing his tight-lipped anger. The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on singles by Aramis Ramirez and Mark DeRosa, with those hits composing two-thirds of the team's hit total for the game. But what happened in the fourth galled Piniella. Jim Edmonds led off with a walk, and DeRosa singled. But Kosuke Fukudome lifted a weak flyball to shallow center, and Edmonds had to hold. Geovany Soto then grounded into a double play, and that was that. "First and third with no outs, put the ball in play on the ground somewhere, and you get a run," Piniella said, referring to the at-bat by Fukudome, who batted seventh in the order and who may be heade... 2008-08-21 00:40:00 One of the good things about having a 6 5.5 (thanks a lot, Cecil and your sorry-ass guarantee)-game lead is you don't have to stress about every game. Especially when the Reds come in town. Did you see that lineup last night? Wow. So, speaking of the Reds, they just sent out a letter to their season-ticket holders (no word on if there is such a thing) explaining their "plan." And by plan, I mean, sucking. Here are a few highlights, along with the true meaning: What they said: "While the run production generated by these two veterans (Griffey and Dunn) will not be quickly replaced, we chose to endure the short-term ramifications for the sake of building a strong, competitive team for 2009 and many seasons to come." What they meant: "Those were our two best players, and the guys who actually got what few fans we have left to come to the ballpark. So, yeah, we're in trouble. But we have hope for next year. 2008-08-19 22:04:00 Dusty in happier days It's actually kind of cute the lengths that Reds .com has gone to to try to keep their fans engaged; like suggesting that the Reds, now 21.5 games back of the Cubs , are still "a factor" in the division race. CINCINNATI -- The Reds are 21 1/2 games out of first place. But that does not mean they're not participants in the pennant race. Actually, it does. But never fear. Dusty has big plans for next season. And with an abundance of youth on the roster, Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker feels the experience will be good for his club. "It'll be beneficial because we're planning on being in that race next year," Baker said. "Guys that have never been there don't know what it's like. We need to get a taste of it." 2008-08-19 15:30:00 Marmol back in serious groove From the Trib: Going into Monday's games, Marmol led all NL relievers in opponents' batting average (.132), strikeouts per nine innings (12.03) and hits per nine innings (4.01), while ranking second in holds (22), first-batter efficiency (.107) and inherited runners stranded (84.8 percent). But no matter, today we have a chance to take 2 of 3 from the fish; no small feat, considering that we had been 0-for-Florida the last two years before this trip. Ryan Dempster will take the mound, looking for his 14 win of the season. Did you honestly think, before the season started, that Ryan Dempster would win 14 games all season? If you say yes, you are a filthy rotten liar. The correct answer is "no, i would have been surprised if Dempster was still in the starting rotation come May." Honest is always the best policy. 2008-08-17 14:50:00 Cubs lose, now officially worst team in MLB From the Daily Herald: Leaving eight runners stranded over the final four innings, the Cubs fell 2-1 and saw their road winning streak end at nine. "Too many chances - early and late," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella, whose team fell to 75-48. "Never got a hit when we needed." Piniella looked to have the best intentions in mind when he stacked his lineup with four left-handed hitters in the middle against Marlins pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who had yielded a .473 batting average against lefties. Turns out that Mike Fontenot was the only left-handed batter to get 1 of the 3 hits against Sanchez in the 5 innings he worked.
