HGH bill altered in order to help children

A Senate bill originally designed to combat use of human growth hormone by athletes and celebrities has been altered in recent weeks to protect another group: children who use HGH to counter growth deficiencies.Senators Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, have dropped language in the bill that would have put HGH on the same legal plane as anabolic steroids, a move that would have severely limited access to the synthetic hormone.For example, under the bill's original language, HGH would not have been widely available through the mail and would not have been available in longer than six-month supplies. Because doctors specializing in childhood growth disorders often are far from patients, such controls could have caused hardship for families with children using the drug."We've ran into some things that we didn't anticipate. The hormone that drives male aggression and sexual interest also seems able to boost short- term success at finance.But what seems to start out well can turn bad, with elevated testosterone levels over several days possibly leading to irrational risk-taking, according to researchers at the University of Cambridge in England."If people want to get practical, it would be good for both banks and the financial system as a whole if we had more women and older men in the markets," said John M. Taking daily recommended dosages of ibuprofen and acetaminophen caused a substantially greater increase over placebo in the amount of quadriceps muscle mass and muscle strength gained during three months of regular weight lifting, in a study by physiologists at the Human Performance Laboratory, Ball State University.Thirty-six men and women, between 60 and 78 years of age (average age 65), were randomly assigned to daily dosages of either ibuprofen (such as that in Advil), acetaminophen (such as that in Tylenol), or a placebo. NYPD To Start Random Steroid Testing

The New York Police Department will soon begin randomly testing its 36,000-officer force for steroid abuse, officials said Wednesday.The testing program comes in the wake of allegations that an illegal steroid ring was supplying bodybuilding police officers.Police officials insisted that the decision to test for anabolic steroids -- first reported Wednesday in The New York Post -- doesn't reflect a concern about widespread abuse at the nation's largest police department. Instead, they said they wanted to drive home the point that using steroids without a prescription is illegal.Since the NYPD already tests for narcotics, it "only makes sense to include steroids," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement.The department plans to begin the urine testing, expected to cost about $1 million a year, in July. Sam Vasquez: First MMA Fatality in a Sanctioned Event

For MMA fans, the day we hoped would never come (but knew eventually would) is unfortunately here.Mixed martial arts competitor Sam Vasquez has become the sport’s first fatality resulting from injuries sustained in a sanctioned MMA fight according to the Houston Chronicle’s Chron.com.Vasquez, 35, died last November of complications from head trauma suffered at the hands of opponent Vince Libardi at Renegades Extreme Fighting on October 20.The official cause of death reported by the medical examiner’s office was complications from blunt trauma to the head with subdural hemorrhage.Despite two surgeries and prompt medical care, Vasquez was unable to recover after being knocked out in the third round. He was admitted to St. Joseph Medical Center and eventually transferred to an area hospice on November 26.Subdural hemorrhage is considered a rare injury in sports - even in boxing. The owner of a bodybuilding supplements business accused in the baseball-bat bludgeoning of his live-in lover last month appeared yesterday in ankle chains and handcuffs to inform a judge that he had switched defense attorneys.Robert Sepe, 53, owner of Healthy 'N Fit International in Croton-on-Hudson, appeared briefly in Cortlandt Town Court. When asked by Justice Gerald Klein if the murder suspect wanted to change attorneys, he said, "Yes."Sepe's new attorney, Bruce Bendish, did not enter a plea for Sepe, who is accused of beating live-in girlfriend Janette Carlucci so badly with a metal baseball bat that she had to be identified days later through dental records.Nor did the new attorney ask the judge to set bail.Sepe has been held in Westchester County jail in Valhalla since March 22, when the Cortlandt man's two sons found blood on carpet in their father's home and called police. Federal agents seized more than $1.3 million in illegal dietary supplements from LG Sciences , a Brighton, MI business that markets products to bodybuilders, authorities announced Friday.U.S. Marshals confiscated the items Wednesday at a warehouse of LG Sciences, located on Whitmore Lake Road, because the products contain unapproved food additives or dietary ingredients that violate the law, according to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.The LG Sciences products are labeled as dietary supplements, but are marketed for use by bodybuilders. Products seized were marketed and distributed online and in retail stores under the names Methyl 1-D, Methyl 1-D XL and Formadrol Extreme.Methyl 1-D XL is pictured on the LG Sciences Web site as a bottle of capsules that increases strength and muscle mass.
