2008 IFBB New York Pro Preview: Brian Chamberlain Interview
2008-05-08 15:50:00
They say a good big guy always beats a good little guy. Nobody knows that better than Brian Chamberlain. Since turning pro in 2003 by winning the light heavyweight and overall titles at the NPC North American Championships, Chamberlain has finished in the top 10 of each of his five professional contests, including an eighth-place finish at last year's IFBB New York Pro. However, when the top five is announced, the 5-foot-3 Chamberlain consistently finds himself on the outside looking in. With the advent of the 202-pound class at this year's IFBB New York Pro Bodybuilding Championships, which will be held on Saturday at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Chamberlain is hoping the latter streak comes to an end.But Chamberlain, who plans on stepping onstage weighing between 195 and 198 pounds, will first have to deal with a deep and competitive lineup in the new 202-pound class, including pre-contest favorite David Henry. Chamberlain gave Henry all he could handle at the IFBB Olympi...

IFBB Pro Chris Cormier Returns To The Stage In August
2008-05-06 17:17:00
IFBB Pro Chris Cormier announced on Pro Bodybuilding Weekly that he will be returning to the stage in August for a pair of contests, the IFBB Pro Bodybuilding Weekly Championships on August 9, 2008 and the IFBB Europa SuperShow on August 16, 2008.Cormier, one of the most successful competitors in IFBB history and a likely future Hall of Famer, last competed at the 2007 IFBB Atlantic City Pro, placing sixth. A week before IFBB Atlantic City, Cormier placed fourth at the IFBB Montreal Pro. Those competitions marked an improbable return to the stage, as just a year earlier Cormier lost the ability to walk while hospitalized with a severe back injury. Cormier guest posed at the 2008 IFBB Pittsburgh Pro Figure Championships last weekend weighing 275 pounds and said he feels rejuvinated and ready to challenge for an IFBB Mr. Olympia qualification once again. "It's taken me lot of time to get comfortable with mu body again, but I finally felt like I was starting to hit poses right again,"...
New Study: Even After Weight Loss, Fat Cells Remain
2008-05-06 17:12:00
There might be new vindication for those who claim the "big-boned" defense for being overweight, a new study shows.New research suggests that an individual's total number of fat cells remains the same even after weight loss.Adults have about the same number of fat cells in their body constantly, even after losing a significant amount of weight, Swedish researchers say.Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, made their determination by studying fat samples from liposuction and abdominal reconstruction surgery in lean and obese volunteers, leading them to conclude that the number of fat cells is determined in childhood. The researchers made their discovery by studying levels of radioactive materials locked inside of fat cells in people who had lived through the period of Cold War nuclear bomb testing from 1955 to 1963.People whose fat cells developed before the onset of testing still had radioactive matter in the cells, showing that their fat cells were being rep...

Texas Steroid Dealer David Jacobs Sentenced
2008-05-05 17:18:00
The ringleader of one of the largest steroids trafficking networks in the nation said Thursday after he was sentenced to probation that he plans to meet with the NFL to share his expertise to help "clean up" football."I want to help them understand the loopholes, how I was able to help people beat the tests, and how prevalent steroid use is," Plano bodybuilder David Jacobs said after his sentencing hearing. He said he and the league had not discussed whether he would be paid for his expertise.NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed Thursday that the league wants to talk to Mr. Jacobs. He said a league security representative contacted Mr. Jacobs' attorney, Hank Hockeimer, in November "about our interest in speaking to Jacobs at the appropriate time. There has been no further contact to this point."Mr. Jacobs was sentenced to three years of probation and fined $25,000 Thursday after he told a judge that he has cooperated fully with federal investigators and was sorry for what he did.Mr. ...

2008-05-05 17:11:00
Jeff Long, the man that Steve Blechman describes as "Jay Cutler Jr. with Paul Demayo calves", has officially penned an exclusive contract with Team Muscular Development. On June 14th of this year, the 24-year old New Jersey native will be entering the much anticipated NPC Jr. Nationals which will also feature rising star, 2006 NPC Excalibur overall champ, Trey "The Phenom" Brewer. This onstage battle should help infuse new interest into the sport of bodybuilding and help to usher in a new era of young upcoming champions. What's even more interesting is that both men will also be entering this year's NPC USA Championships in Las Vegas, NV on July 28th and 29th in hopes of earning their IFBB Pro cards. Only time will tell if this "clash of titans" will prove to be the epic battle it's lining up to be on paper. Either way, the anticipation is worth the price of admission! At only 5' 6" tall, Jeff has weighed as much as 285lbs in the offseason and he's packing a freakish-looking 245...

IFBB Pro Phil Heath Signs Multi-Year Deal With Weider Publications
2008-05-05 06:03:00
IFBB Pro Phil Heath , one of bodybuilding's biggest and brightest stars, signed an exclusive multi-year publishing contract with Weider Publications on Saturday. The 28-year-old Heath made it official while in town for a guest posing appearance at the 2008 IFBB Pittsburgh Pro Figure Championships.Heath burst onto the bodybuilding landscape in 2005 by winning the overall titles at both the NPC Junior Nationals and the NPC USAs. He inked his first contract with Weider Publications after being approached by FLEX Group Editorial Director Peter McGough before the NPC Junior Nationals. His impressive showing at the NPC USAs led some observers to crown him as an IFBB Mr. Olympia in waiting. Since turning pro three years ago, Heath has done nothing to temper those expectations. In five professional contests, Heath has notched three wins - at the IFBB New York Pro and IFBB Colorado Pro in 2006 and the IFBB Ironman Pro in February of this year - and has never failed to finish in the top five....

Bodybuilding Thru The Lens of Danish Photographer Joachim Ladefoged
2008-05-03 19:20:00
Popeye biceps, rippling six-packs, and supernaturally dark tans: these pumped-up people have trained for a Scandinavian bodybuilding contest by shaking off every last ounce of fat. But even if you admire their commitment, it is hard not to recoil in confusion at such asexual specimens. It was this reaction – something between respect and disgust – which prompted the Danish photographer Joachim Ladefoged to photograph this slew of hard-bodies. He took a mixture of black and white and colour photography at the Danish Bodybuilding Championship in 2001 and similar events in the ensuing years, underexposing the subjects to make them appear darker still. The resulting snaps are assembled in a book, Mirror (the title a nod to his models' narcissism), to be published later this year."For me, personally, these people are all strangely photogenic," he says. "Bodybuilding is like theatre in many ways. The tan – which they use to cast shadows across their muscles, so they can be picked ou...

Right now, Ben is weighing in at a monstrous 255 pounds at only 5 percent bodyfat! But how is he achieving this wicked physique? And to rebuild his torn muscle fibers, Ben re...

Some Athletes’ Genes Help Outwit Doping Test
2008-05-01 18:57:00
The 55 men in a drug doping study in Sweden were normal and healthy. And all agreed, for the sake of science, to be injected with testosterone and then undergo the standard urine test to screen for doping with the hormone. The results were unambiguous: the test worked for most of the men, showing that they had taken the drug. But 17 of the men tested negative. Their urine seemed fine, with no excess testosterone even though the men clearly had taken the drug.It was, researchers say, a striking demonstration of a genetic discovery. Those 17 men can build muscles with testosterone, they respond normally to the hormone, but they are missing both copies of a gene used to convert the testosterone into a form that dissolves in urine. The result is that they may be able to take testosterone with impunity. The gene deletion is especially common in Asian men, notes Jenny Jakobsson Schulze, a molecular geneticist at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. Dr. Schulze is the first autho...

Tribeca Interview: 'Bigger, Stronger, Faster' Director, Chris Bell
2008-05-01 15:50:00
In Bigger, Stronger , Faster, a big hit at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, documentarian Chris topher Bell takes a hard look at steroid culture and the bad rap it gets from mainstream America, tackling the Western obsession with body image.Clocking in just under two hours, Bell's sprawling overview deals with the impact of 1980's pop culture icons like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, then dives into the gritty details of steroid usage in sports and the recent congressional hearings where baseball players were reprimanded on national television.Bell doesn't view the issue in black-and-white terms: His own brothers, featured in the film, continually use steroids to enhance their bodybuilding careers. Contrasting the personal with the political, Bigger, Stronger, Faster diagnoses a distinctly American malady.Cinematical spoke with Bell last week in New York, where Bigger, Stronger, Faster has been screening at the Tribeca Film Festival. The movie opens May ...

NPC Bodybuilder Dan Puckett Did NOT Die from Anabolic Steroids
2008-04-30 16:30:00
NPC Bodybuilder Dan Puckett was found dead in his apartment on November 8, 2007 at the age of 22. There was immediate speculation that Puckett died from the use of anabolic steroids based on the fact that he was a bodybuilder and furthered by the rampant steroid hysteria in the media. This week, autopsy results reveal that Puckett’s unfortunate death was due to “natural causes” dispelling claims that he died from steroid use.Dan Puckett was a collegiate bodybuilding champion, winning the 2006 NPC Teen & Collegiate National Championships, and a senior marketing major at the University of Alabama.RIP Dan.Source: MesoRxAuthor: Millard Baker

House Television Series and Roid Rage
2008-04-30 16:27:00
House, M.D., the medical television drama, discussed “roid rage” as a side effect of steroids last night in an episode entitled “No More Mr. Nice Guy.”The House medical team attributed the “roid rage” to the catabolic steroid prednisone. “Roid rage” is not a medical term, but a term arising from popular culture.“Roid rage” is a typically used to described uncontrolled aggression exhibited in anabolic-androgenic steroids users. “Roid rage” has become an accepted side effect from anabolic steroids in spite of the lack of medical evidence documenting a direct effect of steroids on aggression.Even though aggression in anabolic steroids users is rare, the producers of House decided to promote an even less plausible case of “roid rage” (arising from prednisone use). Then again, the whole point of the television show is to explore rare medical cases and consequently rare side effects. So, perhaps the reference to roid rage was consistent with the goals of the sh...

New Study: Scientists Link Baldness and Weight-Lifting
2008-04-29 06:36:00
British scientists say lifting weights can cause baldness. That's because weight training increases testosterone levels immediately after a session, rising 25 percent after 45 minutes, The Sun reported. About 30 minutes later, testosterone levels drop as the hormone is converted to dihydrotestosterone or DHT, which shrinks hair follicles and roots."We have seen an increase in men in their 20s and 30s who regularly circuit train," Rogers Medical Group, a practice specializing in hair transplants, said in a statement. "There's no doubt it is often a factor in hairloss."While inheriting genes for baldness is still the biggest single cause of hair loss, scientists say training with weights is No. 2. Women who lift weights are also likely to end up with thinner hair.Heavy-set men who eat high-fat diets are at the most risk of losing hair because of weight-lifting. Muscletech Fires Christian Boeving for Talking About Anabolic Steroids
2008-04-28 20:37:00
Filmmaker Christopher Bell interviewed his good friend Muscletech spokesperson Christian Boeving about anabolic steroids for the critically acclaimed documentary “Bigger Stronger Faster”. Boeving spoke honestly about his use of anabolic steroids. When CNN aired excerpts from the documentary shortly after its screening at the Sundance Film Festival, Muscletech released the bodybuilding and fitness model from his contract.Muscletech apparently has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to steroids. You certainly can’t talk about steroids if you are sponsored by Muscletech. Muscletech allows you to publicly talk about quite a few things (like masturbating to Christina Lindley’s Maxim photo spread, making multiple references to Lindley’s ample breasts or alluding to Lindlay and microphone fellatio while interviewing Christina Lindley) without consequence, but talking about steroids publicly crosses the line. Such a public admission of steroid use might indicate to consumers tha...

Chemical Pink - The Movie
2008-04-28 20:20:00
There’s some interesting news about Chemical Pink , the planned movie based on Katie Arnoldi’s novel about the world of women’s bodybuilding. The project has gone through some ups and downs: Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk had originally been slated to write the screenplay, and David Fincher, who was supposed to direct it, both dropped out. Arnoldi eventually wrote the screenplay herself and music video director Jonas Akerlund will now direct. The latest is that he and producer Ted Field are now looking for someone to play Aurora Johnson, the main character - an aspiring female bodybuilder who moves to southern California to pursue her dream. They were initially hoping to get a big Hollywood name to play Aurora - at various points in the process they were talking to Patricia Arquette (who apparently even started training at Gold’s in Venice and eating six meals a day!), Rosario Dawson and Jessical Biel - but in the end they couldn’t persuade any of them to take on the job. ...
