Notes: Lia tries to build on win by facing The Monster
2008-05-27 17:05:00 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Donny Lia’s victory last weekend at Mansfield Motorsports Park was surprising to many. And that would include Lia himself. "I knew we could do it; I wouldn’t be driving this truck if I didn’t think we could do it," said the 27-year-old Jericho, N.Y., native and 2007 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion. "But so soon? I can’t believe it." He didn’t do it the easy way either, passing veteran David Starr on the final lap. Lia is just the 10th winner to lead only one lap — and the only one to do so without previously leading a series race. Lia is the first Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate to win a race in nearly five years. Carl Edwards was the last first-year winner in August 2003 at Nashville Superspeedway. The victory also was the first for TRG Racing and owner Kevin Buckler, previously a winner of more than 50 races in IMSA, the American Le Mans Series, the Grand American Rolex GT Series, t... Next week’s renewal of the dirt late model all-star race at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg — featuring the likes of Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne — will have a significant charitable impact, as the funds generated by the live HBO pay-per-view broadcast will benefit the construction of Victory Junction Gang Camp-Kansas City for chronically ill children, as well as the Tony Stewart Foundation. Biffle struggles, battles — runs down second place
2008-05-26 12:05:00 CONCORD, N.C. — Don’t hate Greg Biffle for wishing that the Coca-Cola 600 — the Sprint Cup Series’ longest race by 100 miles — was a few dozen laps, or 50 or so miles, longer. But after a hectic Sunday evening, highlighted by an off-sequence green-flag pit stop a little more than a quarter of the way through the 400-lap distance that put him almost two laps down, Biffle’s No. 16 Ford was coming on at the end. “ … You get it right for about eight laps and you’re thinking, ‘Man, this is great. Look out, here I come.’ ” – GREG BIFFLE And for the second consecutive weekend, he finished runner-up to Kasey Kahne’s No. 9 Dodge. "Yeah, it’s the same thing two races in a row and we finish second to Kasey, but we needed this good finish, for the points [because] finishing last at Darlington really hurt us," Biffle said. "I wish we had another 50 laps or so, because 600 miles... More About: Place , Battles , Runs
Hall of Fame Racing takes time to thank injured vets
2008-05-26 10:05:00 CONCORD, N.C. — Sitting on top of a cooler inside the NASCAR garage, Billy Ray Ricketts lifted up his shirt to show two friends a tattoo under his left arm. Brightly colored Life Savers candy spilling from their package is permanently inked down the left side of his chest. Above the tattooed candy’s package, however, is an unwanted, dark-in-color scar that tells a deeper, more painful story yet symbolizes the need for Ricketts’ colored rings. Billy Ray Ricketts shows off the tattoo of what possibly saved his life. A machine gunner in the United States Marines, Ricketts, in his mid-20s, was severely injured two years ago when his Humvee was blasted by an Improvised Explosive Device near the Iraq and Syria border. "It was a Life Saver candy that saved my life," recalled Ricketts, who sustained shrapnel wounds to the left side of his chest as well as the back of his head. "I went down to the gun turret asking the driver for a Life Saver and r... More About: Racing , Time , Hall of Fame , Hall , Fame
Labonte salvages his 600 after flirting with disaster
2008-05-26 07:05:00 CONCORD, N.C. — Bobby Labonte came back from the brink of the racing abyss to match his best finish of the season in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. In the end, the driver of the famed No. 43 Dodge for Petty Enterprises was pleased with his 11th-place finish but frustrated nonetheless that it didn’t end up being even better. Johnson, Junior each find trouble in Coca-Cola 600
2008-05-26 01:05:00 CONCORD, N.C. — Sunday night’s Coca -Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway became the latest chapter in a 74-race saga titled: "When will Dale Earnhardt Jr. reach Victory Lane?" It looked like it might happen Sunday night, at the place where Junior won the 2000 Cup All-Star Race. Autostock Dale Earnhardt Jr. Coca-Cola 600 Unofficial Results Pos. Driver Make 1. Franchitti to get back in car at Pocono test on Tuesday
2008-05-26 00:05:00 CONCORD, N.C. — It was the day on which the Indianapolis 500 was run, and former IndyCar driving stars Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti were together again. But not on the racetrack. The two ran into each other in the garage area following Sunday’s running of the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, after Franchitti, who remains out with a fractured ankle that is still healing, watched Hornish earn a 13th-place finish that was the best of Hornish’s budding Sprint Cup Series career. "Hey, you gonna run next weekend or what?" Hornish asked. "I hope so," Franchitti replied. It has been almost one month to the day since Franchitti fractured his left ankle in the Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. He hasn’t been able to get back in a racecar since, but plans to do so this Tuesday for Sprint Cup testing at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. "It’s coming along good. Hopefully I’ll be in the car T... More About: Back , Test

Hornish finds his footing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway
More articles from this author:2008-05-25 23:05:00 CONCORD, N.C. — There’s something about Lowe ’s Motor Speedway and Sam Hornish Jr. Maybe it was the four days of testing between the Nationwide and Sprint Cup series sessions earlier this month, or maybe the successful transition from the open-wheel ranks to stock cars is nearing. His crew chief Chris Carrier said big things were coming, but whatever the reasoning, the former Indianapolis 500 champion has gained ground and it seemingly all happened at LMS.
