Petty to re-sign Labonte, announce merger deal
2008-06-10 15:06:00
Petty Enterprises on Wednesday will announce the re-signing of driver Bobby Labonte and that a Massachusetts-based private equity firm has purchased controlling interest in the organization during a press conference at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, sources have told NASCAR.COM. Labonte Labonte, 44, has been the driver of the team’s flagship No. 43 car since 2006. The Petty team also needs a sponsor for Labonte’s vehicle, given that current backer General Mills is leaving to sponsor a fourth Sprint Cup entry at Richard Childress Racing for next season. It was unclear whether a sponsor announcement is part of Wednesday’s program. That may hinge on the forthcoming agreement with Boston Ventures, a private equity firm that has been negotiating to buy part of the Petty organization. In 2003 NASCAR team owner Richard Childress used a similar agreement with another equity firm, New York-based Chartwell Investments, to raise capital that helped him turn his team...

No. 4 crew chief Frazier penalized for infraction
2008-06-10 15:06:00
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR on Tuesday announced that Bryant Frazier, crew chief for the No. 4 Dodge driven by Stacy Compton in the Craftsman Truck Series, has been fined and placed on probation for an infraction occurring during the June 6 event at Texas Motor Speedway. Frazier was fined $2,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31 for violating Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (determination that truck, truck parts, components and/or equipment used in the event do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20B-12A (rear axle housing offset from vehicle centerline) of the 2008 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Rule Book. The infraction was discovered June 5 during pre-race inspection. More: continued here

Notes: Momentum carries Benson home to Michigan
2008-06-10 14:06:00
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Grand Rapids, Mich., native Johnny Benson rides a wave of momentum following his third-place finish in Friday’s Sam’s Town 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. The past five races have produced a steady climb up the point chart from ninth to third. Saturday’s Cool City Customs 200 may be the spark that carries the 44-year-old Benson to the No. 1 position in the standings. Benson got his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory at Michigan International Speedway in 2006. He finished ninth last year — his third top-10 performance in four visits to the 2-mile superspeedway. "We are slowly moving up in the points and hopefully that will continue this weekend," Benson said. "We started the season out strong and then got into a string of bad luck, but it looks like this Tundra is back on track now." Benson started the season with a pair of third-place finishes but slowly has been digging out of the hole created by a 30...

Former NASCAR official files $250 million lawsuit
2008-06-10 12:06:00
A former racing official is suing NASCAR for $250 million, alleging racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination. Mauricia Grant, who is black, worked as a technical inspector responsible for certifying cars in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series from January 2005 until she was fired last October. Grant alleged she was referred to as "Nappy Headed Mo" and "Queen Sheba," by co-workers, was often told she worked on "colored people time," and was frightened by one official who routinely made references to the Ku Klux Klan. In addition, Grant said she was subjected to sexual advances from male co-workers, two of whom allegedly exposed themselves to her, and graphic and lewd jokes. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, lists multiple incidents of alleged sexual harassment and alleged racial discrimination beginning when she was hired in January 2005 thru her O...

Pocono full of ‘could haves’ for quartet of contenders
2008-06-09 09:06:00
LONG POND, Pa. — Pocono Raceway is much too flat to be related to a rollercoaster, but that’s exactly the ride the 2.5-mile triangle in the northeastern Pennsylvania mountains delivered on Sunday for several Sprint Cup competitors. Three of the four — Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Martin Truex Jr. — all led laps but ended up with a lot less to show for their day’s efforts. Jeff Gordon came into the Pocono 500 with the most scintillating record here of the quartet, but it did him little good. Edwards, who came into the race fourth in the standings, had the best day. He’d been fastest in both Saturday practices and started sixth in his No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford. He ran inside the top 10 for nearly three-quarters of the race, despite leading only a single lap on two occasions. When the race’s final caution flew, at lap 178 for Kyle Busch’s spin exiting Turn 1, Edwards was heading to pit road as the race leader when the red light ...

Red Bull Racing hits stride with another strong finish
2008-06-09 09:06:00
LONG POND, Pa. — In a slow yet consistent pace, Brian Vickers, the same driver who failed to make 13 races last season, is making a chance at the Chase a possibility. His runner-up finish to Kasey Kahne in Sunday’s Pocono 500 is giving the Toyota driver an optimistic outlook for the remainder of the season. Pocono 500 Official Results Pos. Driver Make 1. Kahne overcomes pit snafu to dominate Pocono race
2008-06-08 21:06:00
LONG POND, Pa — Pole-sitter Kasey Kahne recovered from missing lug nuts that dropped him to the back of the field — and weathered myriad strategic ploys from his rivals — to win Sunday’s Pocono 500 Sprint Cup race at Pocono Race way. The victory was Kahne’s second of the season and the ninth of his career in 158 starts, but it wasn’t as easy as Kahne’s 3.702-second margin of victory over Brian Vickers might suggest. After a restart on Lap 182 of the 200-lap event, Kahne passed Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Lap 183 and Vickers on Lap 185 to take the lead for the final time. Denny Hamlin ran third, followed by Earnhardt and Jeff Burton, who trimmed the series points lead of 43rd-place finisher Kyle Busch to 21 points. Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards and Mark Martin completed the top 10. Kahne is riding a wave of momentum that dates to the May 17 Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. After Kahne failed to qu...
Kurt Busch not impressed with comeback at Pocono
2008-06-08 21:06:00
LONG POND, Pa. — Kurt Busch slid out of his royal blue No. 2 Penske Racing Dodge after pulling it into a garage stall directly behind his transporter. He was soaking wet and slightly flushed in the face — but after four hours and 500 grueling miles around Pocono Raceway, he was entitled to look that way. But before he met with the media, Busch walked around the front of his car, shaking his head. He stared — almost glaring at it — as he wrinkled his brow before walking toward his hauler, never pausing to look back. “ This was a day when we were given lemons and we turned it into lemonade. ” KURT BUSCH That he had come back from a spin in the race’s first quarter (watch video) that knocked him back to last place to finish eighth, and in the process moved closer in the driver standings to getting into the 12-man Chase for the Sprint Cup field was little consolation to him. His recent record at Pocono, which included two wins and t...

Kahne overcomes penalty to dominate at Pocono
2008-06-08 21:06:00
LONG POND, Pa — Kasey Kahne promised a month ago to use momentum to turn his slumping season around. Boy, has he delivered. Kahne dominated Sunday at Pocono Raceway for his second victory in the last three Sprint Cup Series points races. Counting his win in the All-Star race last month, Kahne has been to Victory Lane three times in the past four events. And he should probably thank his fans for this season-saving run that’s pushed him into championship contention. Kahne’s fans voted him into the All-Star event, and after picking up the $1 million first prize, he vowed to parlay the victory into a strong surge through the summer months of the schedule. Although he bobbled with a 31st-place finish last week at Dover, he owned the weekend at Pocono. Kahne started from the pole, overcame an early pit road penalty that dropped him to 38th and led a race-high 69 of the 200 laps in his Dodge. "Never. I’ve never had a car that dominant before," Ka...
