Petty to re-sign Labonte, announce merger deal

Petty Enterprises on Wednesday will announce the re-signing of driver Bobby Labonte and that a Massachusetts-based private equity firm has purchased controlling interest in the organization during a press conference at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, sources have told NASCAR.COM. Labonte Labonte, 44, has been the driver of the team’s flagship No. 43 car since 2006. The Petty team also needs a sponsor for Labonte’s vehicle, given that current backer General Mills is leaving to sponsor a fourth Sprint Cup entry at Richard Childress Racing for next season. It was unclear whether a sponsor announcement is part of Wednesday’s program. That may hinge on the forthcoming agreement with Boston Ventures, a private equity firm that has been negotiating to buy part of the Petty organization. No. 4 crew chief Frazier penalized for infraction

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR on Tuesday announced that Bryant Frazier, crew chief for the No. 4 Dodge driven by Stacy Compton in the Craftsman Truck Series, has been fined and placed on probation for an infraction occurring during the June 6 event at Texas Motor Speedway. Frazier was fined $2,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31 for violating Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (determination that truck, truck parts, components and/or equipment used in the event do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20B-12A (rear axle housing offset from vehicle centerline) of the 2008 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Rule Book. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Grand Rapids, Mich., native Johnny Benson rides a wave of momentum following his third-place finish in Friday’s Sam’s Town 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. The past five races have produced a steady climb up the point chart from ninth to third. Saturday’s Cool City Customs 200 may be the spark that carries the 44-year-old Benson to the No. 1 position in the standings. Benson got his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory at Michigan International Speedway in 2006. He finished ninth last year — his third top-10 performance in four visits to the 2-mile superspeedway. A former racing official is suing NASCAR for $250 million, alleging racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination. Mauricia Grant, who is black, worked as a technical inspector responsible for certifying cars in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series from January 2005 until she was fired last October. Grant alleged she was referred to as "Nappy Headed Mo" and "Queen Sheba," by co-workers, was often told she worked on "colored people time," and was frightened by one official who routinely made references to the Ku Klux Klan. In addition, Grant said she was subjected to sexual advances from male co-workers, two of whom allegedly exposed themselves to her, and graphic and lewd jokes. Pocono full of ‘could haves’ for quartet of contenders

LONG POND, Pa. — Pocono Raceway is much too flat to be related to a rollercoaster, but that’s exactly the ride the 2.5-mile triangle in the northeastern Pennsylvania mountains delivered on Sunday for several Sprint Cup competitors. Three of the four — Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Martin Truex Jr. — all led laps but ended up with a lot less to show for their day’s efforts. Jeff Gordon came into the Pocono 500 with the most scintillating record here of the quartet, but it did him little good. Edwards, who came into the race fourth in the standings, had the best day. He’d been fastest in both Saturday practices and started sixth in his No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford. LONG POND, Pa — Pole-sitter Kasey Kahne recovered from missing lug nuts that dropped him to the back of the field — and weathered myriad strategic ploys from his rivals — to win Sunday’s Pocono 500 Sprint Cup race at Pocono Race way. The victory was Kahne’s second of the season and the ninth of his career in 158 starts, but it wasn’t as easy as Kahne’s 3.702-second margin of victory over Brian Vickers might suggest.
