Hangetsu (Half Moon) Shotokan karate Kata Video
2008-02-28 16:59:00 We have just finished filming and editing a video tutorial for the Shotokan Karate kata, Hangetsu, the video will be uploaded to ShotokanUnleashed.com shortly.Hangetsu is generally taught at the brown belt level in most shotokan karate organizations. Master Gichin Funakoshi renamed Seisan to hangetsu when he took shotokan karate to mainland Japan. Hangetsu translates as half moon, there are several semi circular stepping actions performed throughout the kata. Hangetsu is taught differently, by senior shotokan sensei, some sensei teach strong, loud breathing, with dynamic body tension performed throughout the whole of the kata. Other sensei move smoothly, with silent breathing, only tensing the muscle groups at the end of each move. However you and your shotokan dojo practice hangetsu, the kata is excellent training for breathing and body conditioning. The slow movements, interrupted by bursts of fast explosive techniques give a wide and varied style of movement, not found in any oth... More About: Video , Moon , Half
Do You Practice Karate To Keep Fit, Or Are You Fit To Practice Karate?
2008-02-01 09:04:00 There are many reasons why people start karate, they may want to keep fit, they may be looking for a hobby, self defence, socialising, or they have simply been fascinated by the whole history and mysticism surrounding karate and the martial arts. Most people, in my experience, are not very fit when they start karate, fitness seems to be one of the main attractions, for a lot of people. When a karate-ka (a karate practitioner) has been training for a certain amount of time, they will sometimes, naturally, supplement their karate practice, it may be running, swimming, cycling, weight training, etc, etc. Of course, there will be senior karate practitioners who only practice karate and nothing else. These karate-ka are normally very serious, practicing five and more classes each week. But what of the person who only trains once or twice each week?Once again, this is only my opinion, please feel free to disagree. When the karate training steps up a gear, the class takes a natural division... More About: Karate , Practice
Mae Geri Front Kick Training
2008-01-15 14:44:00 We had our first hard training session of 2008 last night, approximately 2000 mae geri (front kick). We started with a really good maegeri exercise, we got ourselves into groups of three, one karateka took their obi (belt) off and held the end of the belt close to their stomach, another karateka sat on the floor and held the other end of the belt against the floor. The third karateka stands in ju kamae (freestyle stance), with their kicking foot placed on the floor next to the end of the belt. The first person holding the belt against their stomach then adjusts the length of the belt so the correct distance is obtained for the kicking karate-ka.You have now created a true straight line from the floor to the target. The kicker then slowly lifts their kicking foot off the floor so it's just above the belt. Then slowly kick from floor to target until you can no longer feel your legs.OssuLinden More About: Training , Front , Geri , Kick
shotokan karate dojo 2008
2008-01-07 12:16:00 Our shotokan karate dojo is just about back to normal now, we always start the new year with lots of stretching and gentle training, this usually carries on for a week. The trouble is, the older i get, the more I want this gentle shotokan karate techniques training to carry on!Your shotokan karate association may have different ideas about new years training, but i'm glad ours is a gentle approach. Soon we will be back to normal, training hard and practicing and teaching our shotokan karate belt grading system , we had a great 2007, with about 10 new dan grades and one new nidan, I'm really looking forward to 2008 . I am trying to change our adult shotokan karate classes , in the past, new adults simply joined on the end of the line and were pretty much, left to it. DOH! I now have one of my senior black belts taking a beginners only class, so I'm hoping this will improve our adult karateka retention.OssuLindenPS I'm going soft in my old age. Shotokan Karate Annual Presentations 2007
2007-12-22 22:18:00 Our dojo recently held it's annual karate presentations, which included a demonstration from the 2007 zanshin jumior squad (pictured). An amazing evening that had a magician for the younger karateka and music for the proper people! Followed by a buffet, raffle and presentations. We presented to our new yudansha, their black belt certificates and silk belts, followed by recognition for the 2007 junior squad, trophies for the 2007 kata grand prix winners, sensei recognition and finishing off with an excellent raffle (which must have been fixed, because the same family kept winning).Merry Xmas and a happy new year to everyone!OSSU Linden More About: Karate , Presentations , Annual , Resent
floyd mayweather vs ricky hatton
2007-12-08 22:05:00 Ricky Hatton vs Floyd Mayweather Jr is set to become an unforgettable fight, for a several reasons. Both undefeated, so someone's going to lose, mayweather with the superior technique, hatton with the superior heart! (or so it seems)I'm going to have to go with Hatton! spirit first, technique second, not that I don't rate mayweather, he's one of the greatest boxers ever! But if I had his success, fame and fortune, I wonder how long I could keep the fire burning, I believe it's only natural to lose the desire, when you have everything and want for nothing. Then again, I may be completely wrong, as with all ricky hatton and floyd mayweather fights , what's real and what's for show? Only they really know. If Mayweather wins, which on paper, he should, I'll respect him even more than I do now. (if that's possible)An awesome fight between two of the greatest boxers ever. If you listened to the ricky hatton and mayweather interview , you will understand they are both desperate to... More About: Floyd Mayweather , Ricky Hatton , Ricky
Tekki Shodan Kata Video
2007-11-29 17:26:00 Tekki Shodan (Iron Horse Riding, Level One)I have just uploaded to ShotokanUnleashed.com , a shotokan karate kata video of Tekki Shodan. It may take a few days before the video is live, I rambled on longer than I should have.Tekki Shodan, is usually the required kata for brown belt (3rd Kyu), in most shotokan karate organizations, tekki shodan is excellent for developing close range strikes. All the moves in this kata are performed at close range.Tekki shodan is also a great leg strengthener, only one stance (kiba dachi or horse riding stance), is used through the kata and this demands great leg strength, when practicing intensively. The other shotokan karate kata that use just kiba dachi, are tekki nidan and tekki sandan. There are some unusual techniques in tekki shodan, which I go through in the video, including a sweeping leg movement ( nami ashi ) and an unusul upper cut ( ura zuki ).The embusen ( kata performance line) of tekki Shodan is a straight line with only 6 stepping mo... Shotokan Karate Tournaments. Do You Compete?
2007-11-22 11:29:00 I used to love competing, the whole experience, from training for the event, to going for something to eat with everyone, after the event.Karate competitions are a great learning arena, you find more out about yourself and others, than you could ever do in the dojo, why? Because the pressure is different, yes, there is pressure in the dojo, but it doesn't normally compare to tournament pressure.Everyone should compete at some time, just to experience the multitude of thoughts and feelings that every karateka experiences in a competition. It definitely means stepping out of the 'comfort zone' for most people, but after the event, win or lose, you realise the experience was well worth the effort. One of my black belts has his first boxing match on Friday, he's really excited and at the same time, worried he's going to let everyone down, I said to him, 'If you have trained hard and done your best, it doesn't matter if you get knocked out in the first round, die rather than lose, ... The Magical Karate Kuro Obi (Black Belt)
2007-11-18 21:01:00 Some of our dojo members just tested for shodan, they were all great. Shihan, sensei or student, we are all students of shotokan karate. They had to demonstrate, kihon (basics), kumite (sparring) and kata (forms), from single strikes and kicks to combinations, sanbon kumite (3 step sparring) to free fighting, kihon kata to hangetsu, I could feel all the other yudansha (black belts) in the dojo, willing them on, with their every strike. All those years of dedication, were they going to pay off? This particular group of karate-ka (6 of them + 1 nidan regrade), train at least 5 times each week, so we were happy with their commitment to karatedo, but anything could happen on the day.Well, 100% pass! The first 100% pass I can remember, they all deserved the kuro obi (black belt), the ages of the guys ranged from 14 to 50! We were very happy and proud of everyone that day. There is so much to learn and practice, there are many shotokan exercises that will help and we all need them, shuto uch... It is an extremely spectacular and dynamic kata, because of this, unsu is a favourite competition kata.Unsu has some unusual techniques, from the ipon nukite (one finger strike) in the first few moves, to the spectacular 360 degree spinning double kick, landing on the floor face down. The Definition Of A Good Karate-Do Black Belt
2007-11-11 01:19:00 "A Man of Do (The Way) and a Little Man". As it is told, a student once asked, "What is the difference between a man of Do and a little man?" The sensei replies, "It is simple. When the little man receives his first dan black belt, he can hardly wait to run home and shout at the top of his voice to tell everyone that he has obtained his first dan. Upon receiving his second dan, he will climb to the rooftops and shout to the people. Upon receiving his third dan black belt, he will jump in his car and parade through town blowing the horn, telling one and all about his third dan".The sensei continues, "When the man of Do receives his first dan, he will bow his head in gratitude. Upon receiving his second dan, he will bow his head and his shoulders. Upon receiving his third dan, he will bow at the waist and quietly walk alongside the wall so that people will not see him or notice him". The question is, do you follow the way?Karate -do (The Way of Karate) More About: Black , Belt , Definition , Good
Kihon kata or Taikyoku Shodan Video Tutorial
2007-11-08 00:52:00 I have just uploaded a 20 minute+ video tutorial to shotokanunleashed.comI try and explain some of the finer details when executing this shotokan kata, please remember this is just one way to practice the kata, your version may be completely different and I would love to see different interpretations of this kata.Kihon kata or Taikyoku Shodan (the original name), is a very advanced basic kata! What? I hear you say. I believe taikyoku shodan (kihon kata) to be the hardest of all the shotokan kata, there is nowhere to hide, very basic moves, moves that show every weakness in your karate (and I have many).A great kata to train, drill and perfect. The basic fundamental movements of shotokan karate are all there, if you work this kata correctly, your foundations will be strong, neglect this kata (and Heian shodan) at your peril. The founder of Shotokan karate, Master Gichin Funakoshi, developed six taikyoku kata. Some Great Karate Quotes
2007-10-26 13:19:00 The First Shotokan Karate Dojo (pictured)"Karate begins and ends with respect."~ Master Anko Itosu"The ultimate aim of the art of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the characters of its participants." - Gichin Funakoshi It is important that karate can be practiced by the young and old, men and women alike. That is, since there is no need for a special training place, equipment, or an opponent, a flexibility in training is provided such that the physically and spiritually weak individual can develop his body and mind so gradually and naturally that he himself may not even realize his own great progress. - Gichin Funakoshi"Some people think a martial artist has to be tough against everybody - that's not true at all. A martial artist has to be strong against bad people. But we must also be able to know and understand the feelings, moods and mentalities of good and bad individuals before we can comprehend when to be strong and when to be gentle." - Tsutomu ... Bassai Dai Shotokan Kata Video Tutorial

2007-10-16 23:11:00 I have just uploaded a video of heian godan to shotokanunleashed.com, I made a boo boo! I forgot to add the slow version of the kata, so I will attempt to upload again tomorrow. After working on heian godan for a couple of hours before filming, I realized how many different versions there are of this shotokan kata. Although there are many versions, the kata remains the same, all around the world. There may be a different step here, or a slightly different spin here, but when a shotokan karateka practices heian godan, it's plain for all to see, that it most definately is heian godan and not some 'made up in the back yard' karate kata! This Great Karate-ka Was Useless!
2007-10-01 17:47:00 I listened to a karateka on a seminar once, he had us all enthralled, he said he had beaten this guy and that guy, he had been training ten times per week since he was 2 months old, we should do this, we should do that, he had fought Bruce Lee and won! Man, I was impressed, so impressed, I wanted to watch him train and partner up with him. My dream, became a reality in the next class. I turned to partner up and he was behind me, I thought to myself, I’m going to get my butt kicked from here (London), to the JKA honbu dojo in Tokyo, but I was still excited, this awesome karateka was going to show me how to train correctly, boy, was I in for a shock. His shotokan kumite was awesome alright, it was the most awesome pile of rubbish I had ever seen! When seeing shihan minakami execute karate's snapping techniques, it always amazes me how someone can generate that much power in their basic karate strikes. Truly amazing. The last hour of training was directed towards Yamani ryu bo and sai basics. Trying to relax and not use force when striking with the bo and sai, is very difficult. Shihan was trying to get us to use our whole body to execute the strikes.
