First set of accounts pile pressure on Liverpool?s warring owners
2008-06-09 18:21:00
More than 300 Liverpool fans spent yesterday posting eviction notices at Anfield, demanding repossession of the club, and the pressure on Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, the warring American owners, will increase with the publication of their first set of accounts. Kop Football (Holdings) Ltd, one of the club?s parent companies, made a £33 million loss in the year ending July 31, 2007, according to accounts submitted to Companies House last week. The club?s £350 million loans will also have to be refinanced as early as January and the club must pay interest on a £64 million loan from Kop Football Ltd, its immediate parent company. The accounts reveal that the owners wrote off £10.3 million when they scrapped the club?s design for a new stadium after their takeover in February 2007 and Liverpool fans will be irked to learn that the co-owners claimed more than £1.4 million in expenses in the seven-month period concerned.by timesonline.co.ukTags: Liverpool, News

Riise Set For Roma
2008-06-08 17:33:00
Liverpool defender John Arne Riise may be about to move to Serie A side Roma in a £5 million deal, if reports are to be believed... Riise, who has long been linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, looks set to join the Italian side who appear to have beaten off interest from Newcastle and Lazio, among other clubs. The Norwegian full back is one of the longest serving players at Liverpool having joined the club in 2001 from AS Monaco. However this season has been something of a disappointment for Riise who is no longer an automatic choice for manager Benitez and has reportedly been told he can leave the club this summer.Roma, who narrowly missed out on pipping Inter Milan to the Serie A title, and finished second in the league now look to be the most likely destination for the defender. The move is likely to be the first of many with a summer of busy transfer activity predict...

Reds In Shock Bid For Gunners Ace - Report
2008-06-08 17:27:00
Liverpool are reportedly planning a sneaky ?6million bid for Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner? Reds boss Rafa Benitez is keen to add depth to his forward line over the summer, and reports from England claim he is considering a shock swoop for the Danish youngster. The 20-year-old has received limited opportunities with the Gunners due to the emergence of Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor, with whom the Dane has had a rather drastic falling out.Bendtner has generally struggled to live up to his billing as one of the most promising young strikers in Europe, although late last season he exhibited glimpses of his significant potential.Wenger will be reluctant to sell given the respective injury issues of Robin van Persie and Eduardo da Silva, not to mention the growing uncertainly surrounding Adebayor?s future at the Emirates. But Benitez will almost certainly have to replace the unsettl...

Alonso Drops Strong Juve Hint
2008-06-07 18:19:00
Liverpool's Xabi Alonso has welcomed the recent reports linking him with a move to the Stadio Olimpico, describing Juve ntus as a "special team"... Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez's putsuit of Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry could push Xabi Alonso out of the Reds' starting XI.It doesn't end there, though, because Alonso, with Spain on Euro 2008 duty, is excited by his recent link to Juventus and could wave goodbye to Anfield altogether. The 26-year-old has been the subject of a rumoured £16m move to Serie A since the end of the season and feels that a transfer to La Vecchia Signora would 'complete' his career."I know the Bianconeri follow me," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "I know there has already been contact with Liverpool and my agent, too."I can say that I am really proud to be linked with a strong and historic club like Juventus.“Del Piero, Nedved and Trezeguet were...

Barry Can Go For £14m - Report
2008-06-06 05:14:00
Aston Villa now look to be resigned to losing club captain Gareth Barry to Liverpool and have accepted a bid of £14 million, according to a report... Barry, 27, has risen through the ranks at the club and enjoyed over 10 years in the first team, rising to particular prominence this season, in which he has managed to become a regular in Fabio Capello's England side.Liverpool registered their interest in the Villa's versatile skipper towards the end of the season to the fury of manager Martin O'Neill, who rejected their offer and slammed the manner in which they had approached the player. That offer was thought to have been worth £10 million - a part-exchange involving goalkeeper Scott Carson, who spent the season with the Villans - but now, as Liverpool have continued to press and Barry has been lured by the prospect of Champions League football, a fee of £14 million said to hav...

Liverpool Face Competition For Thiago
2008-06-05 17:10:00
Monaco have declared their firm interest in Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, who is also reported to be a target for Rafa Benitez's Liverpool . Thiago has been in stellar form for Fluminese, and his rapid development has not gone unnoticed by Carlos Dunga, who has rewarded him with call-ups to the national squad.Monaco boss Ricardo, a former Fluminese player himself, had this to say about the highly promising 23-year-old: "He is a huge player, an ace."If we can attract him at Monaco, we will be good in defence. I will do my best to have him."If Thiago does opt to sign for the French Principality club, they would actually become his third European team. In 2004, FC Porto signed the player, but he ended up being sold to Dynamo Moscow after one year of play in the second team.Milan, Villarreal and Bayer Leverkusen are also known to be keen on Thiago, along with his former club Porto an...

Tom Hicks approaches Alistair Mackintosh about succeeding Rick Parry at Liv
2008-06-04 16:23:00
Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has reportedly approached Manchester City chief executive Alistair Mackintosh about replacing his counterpart at Anfield, Rick Parry The move will no doubt place fresh question marks over Parry's long-term future on Merseyside, especially in light of Hicks's comments earlier in the year regarding his performance as chief executive at the club.Every picture tells a story: George Gillett, Rick Parry and Tom Hicks during happier times at AnfieldHowever, Parry still has the support of the majority of the Liverpool boardroom, including Hicks's fellow owner George Gillett and former chairman David Moores, two key individuals, although the fact that the Texan is so openly touting his job about will do little to ease the simmering tensions between the pair.In April, Hicks labelled Parry as "arrogant" with "an inability to manage an organisation", before going on to ask for his resignation in a three-page letter, only for Gillett to refuse to sanction such a m...

Benitez Tables £15m Barry Bid - Report
2008-06-04 15:50:00
Liverpool are thought to have upped the ante on their quest to sign Aston Villa's Gareth Barry , now offering the club £15 million for their captain... Rafael Benitez has made it clear that the England international is his number one target for the summer, and is being convinced from all quarters to make the switch. An old coach, England team-mate and Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and even former team-mate Patrik Berger, who was dropped for the offence, have told him to make the move to Anfield. From Villa Park, there have been streams of support for the versatile 27-year-old, with manager Martin O'Neill particularly keen to hold onto his side's key player as they continue to go from strength to strength. However, having rejected a cash-plus-player deal last month thought to be worth around £10 million - and indeed heavily criticising the Reds' conduct for even making such an ap...

Liverpool close to £7m deal for Inter's Dossena
2008-06-04 15:14:00
Liverpool are on the brink of completing the £7million signing of Italian full-back Andrea Dossena . The 26-year-old is believed to be on Merseyside today having a medical ahead of a proposed move from Udinese. The proximity of the deal has been confirmed by the player's agent, Federico Pastorello, who has been quoted in the Italian media today saying: 'Everything is confirmed and we have already exchanged documents via fax. The deal is practically done.' Dossena is getting married at the weekend, but both club and player want the medical concluded and the final details of the deal settled before then. Initially, Udinese wanted £8million for the player, but a compromise has been reached and, subject to the medical, Dossena will become Liverpool's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Swiss right-back Philipp Degen. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez will fund the move by selling John Arne Riise, with Roma now the favourites to sign the Norwegian. Benitez will then...

Newcastle United are being linked with a possible move for Liverpool pair Peter Crouch and John Arne Riise. As Kevin Keegan looks to strengthen his Newcastle squad, there is speculation that he copuld mount a double bid for his old club's striker Peter Crouch and full-back John Arne Riise. This summer will be Keegan's first opportunity to enter the transfer market on behalf of Newcastle since he ended his first spell as Magpies' manager nine years ago.He is keen to mould his squad for next season and is therefore expected to make some significant signings this summer. He has Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins recovering from an ankle injury sustained on international duty and set to join Australian Mark Viduka on the sidelines for pre-season. Milner links intensify
2008-06-01 18:16:00
Milner links intensify20080601 12:06 Everton have joined Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and Liverpool in the race for Newcastle winger James Milner, according to reports. The former Leeds youngster found first-team football hard to come by at the end of last season with Magpies boss Kevin Keegan favouring an attacking trio of Mark Viduka, Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins, with three midfielders behind them.Milner, 22, knows he could secure a regular start elsewhere but also that he needs the right move at this stage in his career after making his Premier League debut in 2002 aged just 16. Goodison chief David Moyes is looking to add to his squad for another assault on the Uefa Cup and the so-called 'Big Four' but his Anfield counterpart Rafa Benitez might throw a spanner in the works after the release of Harry Kewell. Aston Villa cannot be ruled out after Milner enjoyed a loan spell with the Villans in 2005/06.from clubcall.com

Liverpool To Offer ?20m For Ribery
2008-05-31 18:15:00
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is reportedly preparing an ambitious bid for Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery ? The French international, widely tipped to star for Les Bleus at EURO 2008 next month, has catapulted himself to superstardom since his arrival in Bavaria last summer. The 25-year-old journeyman is now recognised as one of the most dangerous wingers in the game, alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. His performances for Bayern have alerted some of the biggest clubs in Europe, and reports from Germany claim Liverpool will offer ?20 million for the former Marseille man.Benitez is keen to strengthen his attacking options over the summer, and has been monitoring a number of wide players, including La Liga stars Maxi Rodriguez and Albert Riera.Ribery?s ability to play right across the pitch will no doubt attract the former Valencia boss, as will the Frenchman?s...

Rafa To Go Easy On Crouch
2008-05-31 18:13:00
Liverpool striker Peter Crouch is likely to be granted his wish of leaving the club, after they finally backed down on their ambitious asking price? The 27-year-old was aghast when Reds boss Rafa Benitez announced it would take at least ?15 million to prize the lanky target-man away from Anfield.Aston Villa and Portsmouth had expressed interest in bringing back their former striker, but Liverpool?s lofty price tag seemed to scare off all potential suitors, much to Crouch?s chagrin. The England international had previously intimated his desire to leave Merseyside in search of regular football, in order to stay well and truly in view of Three Lions boss Fabio Capello. The former Southampton man has received few first-team opportunities in recent times, as Spanish import Fernando Torres has clearly established himself as Benitez?s first-choice forward since arriving last summer from Atlet...

Injury rules Babel out of Euros
2008-05-31 18:03:00
The loss of Babel is a big blow for The Netherlands Netherlands winger Ryan Babel will play no part in the Euro 2008 championship after he tore ankle ligaments in training on Saturday. The 21-year-old Liverpool star had been expected to play some part of the team's final warm-up match against Wales in Rotterdam on Sunday. And he was set to be a key part of Marco van Basten's squad for the tournament in Austria and Switzerland. Van Basten is believed to be already discussing a replacement for Babel. The Netherlands are in Group C along with France, Italy and Romania for Euro 2008, which kicks off on 7 June. Van Basten also has a concern over the fitness of Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, who has been on the sidelines since joining the squad last week. However, Van Persie is optimistic about making his side's opener against world champions Italy on 9 June. "I am in the final phase of my recovery. I feel fit," Van Per...

Liverpool And Everton Eye Johnson
2008-05-30 15:10:00
Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton are set to go head-to-head in their efforts to land Manchester City midfielder Michael Johnson , according to reports. Johnson, an England under-21 international, had an impressive season for the Eastland-club, making twenty-three league appearances and drawing plaudits for his midfield displays.Such form did not go unnoticed by City?s rivals and the uncertainty surrounding manager Sven-Göran Eriksson could lead to Johnson?s exit as he, along with several other first-team players, seek the security other Premier League clubs can offer. With Xabi Alonso looking increasingly set on a move to Italy and talks with Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry deadlocked, Liverpool could well swoop for Johnson within the next two weeks to see off the challenge from The Toffees.David Moyes, however, is keen to bolster his midfielder after the departure of Lee Carsley and has ...

Molby warns against Alonso sale
2008-05-29 18:37:00
Former Liverpool star Jan Molby feels selling midfielder Xabi Alonso would be a great loss to the Anfield side. Alonso struggled for form and fitness last season and has been strongly linked with a move to Juventus in recent weeks. Molby told BBC Radio Merseyside that the Spanish International could still have a pivotal role to play at Anfield. "They're once in a lifetime, players who can play, players who can dominate games like he can," he said. Alonso, a £10.5m signing from Real Sociedad, was one of the first players Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez brought to Anfield, following his own arrival from Valencia in 2004. He has since gone on to make 161 appearances scoring 14 goals. Benitez is looking to make changes to his squad ahead of next season and Molby concedes that some difficult decisions may have to be made to generate the finance required to make a sustained challenge for the Premier League. "There are always players at every foot...

REDS SET TO BE NUMBER ONE IN EUROPE
2008-05-28 15:45:00
Liverpool are on course to be Europe 's number one ranked team according to UEFA for the first time since 1985. The basis for the UEFA rankings is the performance of teams in the European Cups during a five-year period. While the Reds currently stand third behind AC Milan and Chelsea, the projected figures for 2009 put Merseyside's finest on top. That's because over the last four years ? winning the Champions League in 2005, losing in the final in 2007 and reaching the semis last term ? the Reds have accrued more points than any other team (Liverpool 104.288; AC Milan 103.006; Chelsea 102.284). Therefore, a decent European campaign in 2008-09 would see Rafa Benitez's side overtake AC Milan and Chelsea to take top spot. Meanwhile, Liverpool's recent form in the Champions League also means they will go into the qualifiers for next season's competition as number one seeds when the draw is made in July.from liverpoolfc.tvTags: Liverpool, News

New Liverpool signing Philipp Degen has vowed to do whatever it takes to make the grade at Anfield. The 25-year-old Swiss international, who arrived on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund, will be in direct competition with Steve Finnan and Alvaro Arbeloa for a place in the Reds' starting XI next term, which he acknowledges is a daunting prospect."All of my team-mates have congratulated me [about Liverpool]," he told Swiss reporters."My team-mates know the business. They know what this transfer means."Only in the last week were the details clarified. I am glad now everything is clear."I made the change but it's not easy. I was in Dortmund for three wonderful years."My playing style suits The Premier League. It is played moving forward. The move is a challenge for me. Liverpool are not just any club."They play every year for the championship and the Champions League. It is clear to me that it's not easy to get through [to the team]. Benitez ponders dropping Barry for Petrov
2008-05-27 17:46:00
The uncertainty of Manchester City boss Sven Goran-Errikson?s future and the newspaper reports that Shinawatra will put his whole side up for sale could attract Rafael Benitez?s eye. Martin Petrov who constantly troubled Liverpool with his pace in the game at Eastlands earlier in the year has attracted Rafa Benitez?s eye with scouts sent to watch him and should Gareth Barry agree a £75,000 new contract with Aston Villa, the Spaniard will make a bid for the Bulgarian. Having Stewart Downing also on the possible left-wing signings, the paciest is the Bulgarian. It remains to be seen however if the ludicrous offer of £10m plus Carson, Riise and Crouch will be increased to speculated Newspaper fees of £15m plus Carson and Crouch with £4m of Riise?s sale to Newcastle. Jermaine Pennant, Steve Finnan and Sebastien Leto could leave after losing their places in the side. Benitez could try to fund a move for Barry by offloading these 3 but should Barry decide to stay in the Midlands, a move ...
