NFL Fixtures: Week 14 (Sunday)

5K Fine For Keyshawn Johnson
2006-12-13 02:26:02 No mention of it yet over at Panthers.com but Keys hawn John son’s little spat in the fourth quarter at the weekend left the Panther’s receiver with a $5,000 fine after throwing his helmet up the sideline and yelling at an official. Get a grip man! Fair enough, he’s got a right to be pissed off, if the pass interference call had gone the other way the Panthers could have been smiling on a 31-27 victory but the scoreline stayed 27-24 thanks to some handy work by Jeff Garcia. Bit heavy treatment on the former Cowboy but there you go! More About: Johnson , Keyshawn Johnson , Fine
Damaged Hand May Keep Delhomme Out
2006-12-13 02:26:02 Ligament damage to the thumb in his throwing hand is what may rule Jake Delhomme out of week 14’s footballing action. The big Panthers man, who has 15 TDs to his name this season, sat out practice again yesterday which means that backup Chris Weinke may well be in with a shot at starting against the Giants on Sunday evening. Injury-wise he doesn’t need surgery, as of yet, with the ligament more “stretched and not torn off the bone” (according to ESPN via Coach John Fox). The Panthers are currently 6-6, a bit away from their proposed record at the beginning of the season but they have a chance against the Giants as they pick up momentum in the NFC wildcard race. Good news for Panthers fans, however, is that DeShaun Foster is likely to start having missed the last two games through injury. If the Panthers are going to progress to the playoffs they’re going to need all hands on deck for this one. More About: Keep , Hand , Damage , Damaged
Time For Vick To Step Up
2006-12-13 02:26:02 I’ve been critical of Michael Vick in the past - and why not! He’s brash, he’s arrogant, has a bit of a temper but while he doesn’t always get things done in the air, he certainly knows how to move on the ground. If Vick plays anything like he did for Atlanta last weekend then in week 14 he’s got a chance at becoming the first quarterback to post 1,000 rushing yards in a season, a feat he last came close to in 2004 when he ran for 902 yards on the ground. Not only that but he’s just 40 yards off the most rushing yards in one season for a QB, Vick currently poised on 929 yards, requiring 71 more to reach that 1,000 mark. The six year veteran who has been with the Falcons since he started his NFL career could do a little better passing wise, currently at 51.1% for the season having gone 157/307 in 12 games so far this season. His combined yards for passing and rushing currently stands at 2,821. While he might be doing well along the ground, as good... More About: Time , Step , Step Up
Fine Follows Yards For Face Mask Penalty
2006-12-13 02:26:02 As if quarterbacks weren’t protected enough already this season, fines are starting to follow yards - a move starting to increase in the game. The latest comes with the Dolphins‘ Jason Taylor getting fined $7,500 for his face mask penalty on Jon Kitna at the weekend (via ESPN). Tough love on defenders these days! Surgery For Favre?
2006-12-13 02:26:02 Are we possibly looking at the end of the career of Brett Favre before the season has ended? Word on the wire has it that the Packers QB and NFL legend is looking at surgery on his left ankle, though he has admitted that he could wait until after the season as ended. The 37 year old is troubled by bone spurs in his left ankle and would need keyhole surgery to clean his ankle out. With a a month of regular season football remaining, Favre has thrown almost 2,900 yards in what is his 16th season in the NFL and while he still hasn’t declined the opportunity of a 17th season in football, many fans (including myself) believe that 2006 will be the end of the road for Brett Favre with the Packers. Having thrown almost as many interceptions as he has touchdowns this season Favre isn’t exactly at his best, performance-wise, though he would certainly be missed from the league. B.J. Sams Breaks Leg For Ravens
2006-12-05 02:24:02 Baltimore Rave ns KR BJ Sams snapped a bone in his right leg during Thursday’s loss to the Bengals and looks like he won’t play again this season for Baltimore. Injury reports state that it was a broken fibula and it is the first major injury for the Raven s thus far in 2006. Ground conditions were by no means friendly with a lot of rain, possibly causing Sams to twist and fall as he returned the football following Cinti’s second FG, let alone Kenny Webster’s presence. Best of luck to him in recovery and hopefully with the Ravens looking set for the playoffs, it won’t be the last we see of him. More About: Break , Breaks , Brea
Plummer Replaced Against Seahawks
2006-12-05 02:24:02 Jay Cutler will be stepping into the starting role for Denver this Sunday after being Jake Plummer lost his starting job for the Broncos following a severe up and down season. Comparisons between Drew Bledsoe and Jake Plummer? He he…. Though in fairness - look what Tony Romo has been able to do. Twice in four starts named as the NFC Offensive Player Of The Week - not bad going. Should certainly be interesting to see the connection between Javon Walker and Jay Cutler now that the rookie has a chance to shine. Tony Romo NFC Offensive Player Of The Week (Again)
2006-12-01 08:06:05 When the Cowboys beat the Bucs last weekend, Tony Romo tied the Cowboys franchise single-game record for TD passing as he went for 300+ yards and a 5-TD passing game. Not only that, but his efforts secured him the NFC Offensive Play er of the Week award, his second time in three weeks after scooping the award in week 10 as well. Not a bad run for Romo who has only been starting for the Cowboys in the last month or so. Are you watching Drew Bledsoe? More About: Player , Again
Vick - You Muppet
2006-12-01 08:06:05 Someone needs to teach the Vick boys a lesson in discipline. He’s gone got himself in trouble again for a “hand gesture” at the weekend which resulted in a $10,000 fine confirmed this morning by Reggie Roberts in Atlanta. The gesture came after the Falcons were effectively booed off the field for their fourth straight loss, this time coming in at 31-13 to the Saints, a game that saw Drew Brees cement his place for the Pro Bowl, again throwing for over 300 yards. Vick himself had a great game though and still managed to rush for 166 yards. You have to hand it to the man, there aren’t many around who would attempt the same. Vick said after the gesture I don’t know where it came from, but the people who know me know that’s not me and that’s not my character Some people I think, Michael Vick, would beg to differ. Doesn’t matter how good you are on the field, its these little hiccups that stick with you through your career.
Toronto In The NFL?
2006-12-01 08:06:05 I’m over in Toronto at the moment and while the Maple Leafs are continuing to pack the ACC on a weekly basis for games, it looks like the city might be hosting an NFL franchise in the near future as the league are set to announce the chosen city for a regular-season game to be held outside the US, just in time for the Super Bowl. The finalists include Mexico City, Toronto, London, Frankfurt and Cologne. While Frankfurt and Cologne would sound like good options given the increasing interest in NFL Europe in the post season, league Chiefs are likely to keep it on this side of the Atlantic and Toronto, according to Reuters, seems like the hot spot. Cowboys Release Mike Vanderjagt
2006-12-01 08:06:05 By the sounds of things, the Cowboy s are sick with Mike Vanderjagt apparantly not being the most accurate kicker in the league and as such have let him go, opting to sign former Colts and Bucs kicker Martin Gramatica in his place. At just 13/18 on FGs, Vanderjagt was never going to last long under Bill Parcells, the kicker originally signed in preseason to avoid having a record like 13/18 and actually convert the points that cost the Cowboys a spot in the playoffs last season. While Vanderjagt was reluctant to handle kickoffs, Gramatica doesn’t have that problem. He’s also decent on XPs, having missed just two since 1999 but currently stands at 138/180 for FGs since he started out in Tampa Bay. More About: Release , Lease
Looking at ?Superbugs? in the NFL
2006-12-01 08:06:05 Often is now the case, with sorrow, that we see athletes in their prime struck down in some sport. It happens in soccer, Liverpool having had a number of players in the past suffer strange bugs and diseases, corroding muscles, unexplainable illnesses. It happens in golf, hockey, Gaelic Football, players are now having their careers ended - or worse, their lives - by the tiniest of germs. NewsDay.com has a great look at superbugs in football and how they are “blindsiding” the NFL. Well worth a read. More About: Super , The N , Bugs , King , Look

Cowboys First To Beat Colts
2006-12-01 08:06:05 The Dallas Cowboy s kept their playoff chances alive and moved to 6-4 last night with a 21-14 victory over a previously unbeaten Colts side. The Colts, despite not looking like their usual selves, held on until the fourth quarter when Marion Barber opened up and found running room to pick up 14 points and hand the Colts their first loss of the season. Peyton Manning threw up two interceptions and the Colts turned the ball over on four out of their first six possessions, coach Tony Dungy admitting that the Colts have “been playing with fire” of late but that it has finally caught up with them. After a scoreless first quarter, the Colts finally broke the deadlock just before half time when Peyton Manning found Reggie Wayne for 23 yards, the Colts taking a 7-0 lead into the break. Manning was then made to pay for his mistakes in the third, Kevin Burnett returning an interception for all of 39 yards in the opening minute of the second half, before Dallas Clark picked up a 4 y... Thats The Panthers I Know
2006-12-01 08:06:05 I pulled the Panthers for my fantasy football team back at the start of the season, thinking of course that they would be the perfect defensive unit for the year but boy what a let down. That said, they were fantastic on Sunday against the Rams, handing St. Louis a shutout going 15-0 including two turnovers and a safety. Why, oh why Carolina, did you wait until NOW to start playing like that? More About: Hat , Know , Hers , Hats

Old Habits Die Hard for TO
2006-08-29 15:21:02 Looks like its a case of “old habits die hard” for Terrell Owens who has been fined just shy of $10,000 for being late to an offensive meeting, missing a team meeting and team rehab session. Owens has missed over half the Cowboys training camps and hasn’t featured in any of their preseason games (with the Cowboys going 3-0 after a good 17-7 victory over the 49ers on Saturday). To be fair, I think Owens is taking the piss with his whole injury thing. I like the Cowboys, no denying that, and was disappointed when they couldn’t make the playoffs last year despite some good turns with Keyshawn Johnson before his release, along with Terry Glenn who continues to impress in preseason. When they signed Owens I thought “fantastic”, just what they need and provided he wasn’t acting up over anything it could prove to be a great partnership between Drew Bledsoe and himself. Yet with regular season just over a week away, no doubt TO will expect to walk ... More About: Habits , Hard , Die Hard , Bits , Abit
Kerry Collins Finds A Home In Tennessee
2006-08-29 15:21:02 Kerry Collins , cut by the Raiders in the post season, has finally found a new home after agreeing a contract with the Titans who dumped Steve McNair this past post season. Before McNair wound up at Baltimore it was thought that Kerry Collins might well have ended up playing there this season but instead the veteran QB will start his season at Tennessee . Whether or not he pulls off another 3,000+ yard season (threw over 3.7k last season) remains to be seen however but its certainly going to be great for Vince Young to have someone of Collins’ experience to look up to on the field and in practice. Hopefully too it will give the Titans offensive line a bit of a mental spur as they currently sit 0-3 for the preseason. Should be some good competition for Billy Volek too! Welcome back, Carson Palmer
2006-08-29 15:21:02 Well, I certainly don’t think that last night’s preseason game between the Bengals and the Packers could have gone any better for Cars on Palm er. Back after injury with a knee brace to support him, Palmer looked well, took a few hits and found the endzone with three TD passes in the first half alone as the Bengals mauled Green Bay at the Paul Brown Stadium 48-17. Brett Favre on the other hand didn’t exactly have the greatest of games on his return to Cinti last night giving up a fumble on the Packers first offensive series which was returned all the way for a TD before being interecepted on their second. Palmer seemed to be having the time of his life, looking good in the pocket, even scrambling for extra yards and sliding on his braced knee without any telling signs of trouble. Speaking after the game he said ?It felt good to get hit and to know my knee could withstand the contact. They can talk all they want about you being ready to go, but until you get hit, unti... Palmer, Favre Face Off Tonight
2006-08-29 15:21:02 Tonight should be a good night in the Paul Brown Stadium as the Bengals take on Green Bay in their third preseason game ahead of Friday’s closeout with the Colts. But why so special? From my point of view anyway tonight represents a terrific achievement in terms of NFL quarterbacks. Carson Palm er is back in action after extensive surgery and is expected to start the first half tonight, possibly playing into the third, while Brett Favre is still at the helm in his 16th NFL season, most certainly his last one. One of the NFL’s stalwarts and living legends against one of football’s brightest prospect for years. Palmer steps in to start ahead of Anthony Wright (signed as a free agent back in the Spring from the Ravens) though tonight’s game along with Friday’s will tell a lot as to whether Palmer starts the regular season in two weeks time. Both Favre and Palmer threw for over 3800 yards a piece last season, with Favre just edging out on top in a season tha... More About: Night , Face , Tonight
Koren Robinson Cut By Vikings
2006-08-27 15:21:01 Vikes’ wide receiver Koren Robin son has been, rather unsurprisingly, cut from The Viking s side following his arrest almost two weeks ago for speeding, drunk driving and evading the police. Robinson had been arrested after being clocked breaking 100mph in a 55mph zone and subsequently failed to stop for police when requested to do so. He picked up almost 350 yards receiving last season play for the Vikings, having spent the previous four with Seattle, but made his mark with over 1200 yards on kick returns - going to the Pro Bowl as kick returner before signing a $12m contract extension in the post season. No doubt he will be picked up somewhere before the season commences, or at least before the deadline as he should be allowed to build on a good season last year. Solid kick returner, decent with his hands but certainly carries a little bit of personal baggage that needs working on. More About: King , Kings

Madden 07 Explodes Onto The XBox
More articles from this author:2006-08-27 15:21:01 We’re not massive next-gen heads here at The Football Times but the office XBOX has been burning feverishly since Friday morning with the arrival of this year’s installment of Madden 2007. The game has been solidly put through its paces in the last few days and continues to spin away in the drive for this Sunday afternoon as we get to grips with the new Hall Of Fame angle on Superstar mode. Drafted in the third round to replace Edgerrin James at the Colts brought our first taste of the new camera and gameplaying angles in this year’s updated mode. Now, unless you’re the QB you’ve got no control in the early stages over the plays but instead you have full control over just your superstar - whatever the position. Play out as the lead blocker, or in our case as the RB - making good yards on some plays, covering Manning on others as a blocking back. Certainly adds more character and jazz to game in a definite improvement over Madden 06. Sure, there’s... More About: Xbox , Explode , Odes 1, 2, 3 |
