Super Bowl 2011 Heading To Dallas Cowboys
2007-05-23 10:07:00
The NFL have voted the 2011 Super Bowl to be held in Arlington, the new home to the Dallas Cowboys set to open in 2009. They reckon that when the stadium opens it will hold 100,000 people seated, with the possibility of allowing an extra 20,000 tickets for the Super Bowl thanks to large viewing screens in each of the end zones. The bid had been coming down between Dallas, Indianapolis (with their new stadium opening in 2008) and Arizona (hosting the 2008 Super Bowl)

Been a nice blogging break since the Superbowl to concentrate on other blogging developments (I’m now producing two podcast shows and numerous other blogs) but its time to get back on top of the football. It all starts with a new blog look too, orange (thats not a hint at team preference or anything!).

Peyton Manning Is Super Bowl MVP
2007-02-06 09:01:01
I don’t think anyone can disagree with the fact that Peyton Mann ing was named MVP last night. I mean seriously, the biggest game in the sport, one of the biggest sporting nights in the world and Manning stood up and faced the test of champions, passing with flying colours. Our sincerest congratulations to Peyton Manning.

Heavy Rain Lifts Colts To Super Bowl Victory
2007-02-06 09:01:01
When it rains it pours and it certainly rained in Miami last night for Super Bowl XLI as the Indianaplois Colts topped the Chicago Bears in a 29-17 scoreline. The weather of course meant it was the first Super Bowl to fall to heavy rain. The firsts didn’t stop there though as Tony Dungy is officially the first African-American coach to win the trophy in the history of the Super Bowl while Bears rookie Devin Hester also added a magnificent first - returning the opening kick off for 92 yards and a score to really rattle the Colts from the start. With a score of that magnitude coming hard and fast you would have been forgiven if you thought the Bears were going to mount an onslaught on the Colts and in fairness, they did well in the first quarter, wrapping it up at 14-6. After Hester’s fantastic opening score Reggie Wayne replied with a 53 yard TD, his first of only two receptions for the game. Alas the kick was not to be, leaving the scores at 7-6 before Mushin Muhammed to...

Cam Cameron Takes Over In Miami
2007-02-04 20:59:01
The Dolphins finally have a new coach to replace Nick Saban (now with Alabama) as they’ve picked up Cam Cameron . If he can work the kind of magic he’s done offensively at San Diego for the past five seasons or so then I think Miami are in for a real treat. Tip o’ the hat there.

Saints Dream Ends In Chicago
2007-02-04 20:59:01
Getting the New Orleans Saint s to the Super Bowl and possibly lifting that trophy in two weeks time would have been a football miracle following the debacle of last season but alas the dream is not to be, the Saints well restricted in Chicago with the Bears cruising to a 39-14 victory. The win crowns the Bears NFC champions for 06/07 and puts the Bears in the running for the Vince Lombardi trophy for the first time since 1985. The Saints had their glowing moments - Reggie Bush putting in a massive 88 yard TD catch and run all the way to the end zone which in the third period closed the gap to just two points before the Bears picked up a safety, their only score of the third. Outside of a Thomas Jones 2 yard TD, Chicago had been busy picking up points through Robbie Gould who kicked three before the break from 19, 43 and 24 yards respectively. However, with the scores set at 18-14 going into the fourth, there really was no going back for the Bears and no going forward for the Saints ...

Disappointment for Eagles fans but you can’t question
2007-01-16 14:52:01
Disappointment for Eagles fans but you can’t question or break the spirits of the Saints who were driven on by Drew Brees, Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister to score big against the Eagles and walk away with a 27-24 victory and move on to the NFC game next weekend. With the conference game on the horizon you’ve got to get a little excited about the fact that the Saints might well wind up in the Super Bowl - about as far away a place as you could have possibly imagined them at the start of the season. But yet, there they are. The two boys, Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister helped an awful lot at the weekend to rally the Saints around. Bush came up with the goods in the first half to grab a 4 yard TD wedged in between scores from Dante Stallworth and Brian Westbrook before McAllister added two scores in the second half on a 5 yard run and an 11 yard pass from Brees to edge past the Eagles. It was a close game, only a point in the difference at half time but the third quarter...

2007-01-16 02:51:02
Ken Whisenhunt has been appointed the new head coach in Arizona with the Cardinals hoping the former Steelers offensive coordinator will be able to bring some kind of joy to the franchise after what was a desperate 2006 for them on the field. Whisenhunt becomes the Cards 8th coach in just under 20 years of football. Whatever about his role in Arizona and what the fans expect from him - a few wins should be enough given that its been over 20 years since the Cardinals had a real winning season - I’m most interested to see what he gets out of Matt Leinart after getting on so well with Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh. I guess only time will tell!

When you saw the scores tied at 20-20 with just five minutes
2007-01-15 20:51:01
When you saw the scores tied at 20-20 with just five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter you could tell it was going to take something special for either side to win last night’s encounter between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants. The special moment was left down to David Akers who kicked from 38 yards on the last play of the game, no time remaining, to send the Eagles further into the playoffs. The game also marked the last time we’ll likely see Tiki Barber on the field of play. Jeff Garcia and Brian Westbrook had pretty good games for the Eagles but it was the Giants who drew first blood when Plaxico Burress got on the end of a 17 yard pass from Eli Manning at the back of the end zone to put the Giants up on the scoreboard. The second quarter, however, belonged to the Eagles. Brian Westbrook made a wild streak up the right of the field, weaving his way through the Giants defence to produce a 49 yard TD run less than a minute into the second quarter. ...

2007-01-15 20:51:01
The Atlanta Falcon s have appointed Bobby Petrino (ex Louis ville) as the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons , replacing Jim Mora who left the post last week. The deal announced by Arthur Blank (Falcons owner) is reported to be with in the region of US$24m over five years. The Falcons finished 7-9 for the season so no doubt Falcons fans will be hoping for a turnaround next season. I’m hoping he’ll be able to do something with Michael Vick. Maybe put a lid on his aggression and really turn him into a diamond quarterback.

2007-01-15 20:51:01
Who do you think is going to be next on the chopping block for coaches? My money is still saying Bill Parcells though in fairness, the Cowboys did pull out a few good games under Tony Romo but collapsed at the wildcard stages. Early season money would have been on Brian Billick except he knew well that he was fighting for his job with “serious” changes having to be made at the Ravens - now though they’ve a chance to regain the Super Bowl glory of recent years. Anyone any takers?

Saban Quits Dolphins, Miami Now Hiring
2007-01-04 14:45:02
Nick Saban has packed in his head coaching job at Miami Dolphin s after just two years to go back to college football. Not only that, but he’ll be taking over as speculated at Alabama and he will become the highest paid coach in college football because of it. Saban signed a deal today said to be worth $30m-$32m over 8 years though that figure could rise as high as $40m. This, of course leaves Miami with a bit of a coaching dilemma as Saban has categorically denied over the past month and more that he would be leaving the Dolphins. The Florida Today makes for a good read on the whole situation. No doubt the names will start to get thrown around the league, Miami supposed to have been destined for the Super Bowl. No doubt they’re kicking themselves for ignoring Drew Brees as a free agent after he brought the Saints back to life after last year’s nightmare season, only to pick up Daunte Culpepper who made a total of four starts for the Dolphins though Joey Harrington ...

Offensive Rookie Of The Year For Vince Young
2007-01-04 14:45:02
While DeMeco Ryans picked up the Defensive Rook ie Of The Year award, the Associated Press have deemed fit to name Vince Young the Offensive Rookie Of The Year after taking almost half the 50 votes cast, beating off competition from Marques Colston (Saints), Maurice Drew (Jaguars), Marcus McNeill (Chargers) and Reggie Bush (Saints) who finished bottom of the voting order with three nominations. When Steve McNair left the Titans for the Ravens it looked like they’d fallen apart. Kerry Collins was draft in but they still couldn’t get anything going and started the season out at 0-5. Up stepped Vince Young and effectively lead the team on an 8-3 run, finishing the season at 8-8. Young is only the second quarterback to win the honour in almost a half century, Big Ben Roethlisberger being the other. Young also rushed for over 500 yards this season and will no doubt, as his career expands, chase down Michael Vick’s PB for this season and beyond. Fair play to the chap.
Defensive Rookie Award For DeMeco Ryans
2007-01-03 14:44:01
Houston’s linebacker DeMeco Ryan s has been named Defensive Rook ie Of The Year by Associated Press, this according to the USA Today. USA Today have themselves named Vince Young as their overall Rookie Of The Year. Ryans had a great first season for the Texans and topped the teams solo tackle charts with 126, bringing a total tackle count of 156 to the front of the line with him, scoring the highest number of tackles in the league for a rookie in the last 20 years, and more than each of the five other linebackers who have scooped the award this decade. Of 50 votes cast to decide the winner, Ryans picked up a whopping 36 of them - the remaining split between Bears end Mark Anderson (second, five votes), the Packers‘ AJ Hawk (third, four votes). Two votes went to Cleveland LB Kamerion Wimbley while one vote each went to Mario Williams (this season’s #1 pick), Bengals DB Johnathan Joseph and Ravens‘ DB Dewan Landry.

Mora & Green Start Coaching Carousel
2007-01-03 14:44:01
The revolving door has already started to spin in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons ditching coach Jim Mora while the nightmarish Cardinals have shut the door on Dennis Green ’s stay in Arizona, Mike Sherman already a possible candidate for his seat. I couldn’t get over the exits last year, ten or eleven coaches replaced, coordinators chopping and changing and who knows - maybe we’ll see the same this year. God knows that Art Shell’s return to the Raiders hasn’t gone exactly as planned, finishing the season on 2-14 at the bottom of the NFL. Dennis Green was in his third year at Arizona and in almost 50 games manged a mere 16 wins. He will be paid $2.5m from the fourth year of his contract, a nice golden handshake there. The Falcons started the season well under Jim Mora but in their last 9 games came up with 7 losses, Mora kind of knowing in advance that if the Falcons missed the playoffs again that he would be out of a job. Well, now he is. Any bets on w...

Bronco Darrent Williams Shot Dead
2007-01-03 14:44:01
Darrent Will iams, cornerback for the Denver Bron cos was shot dead last night, killed in a driveby shooting around 2am. The stretch hummer limo he was travelling in was sprayed by gunfire in the early hours on the morning leaving at least “eight bullet holes” in the limo, Williams and two others in the limo hit. The Broncos were eliminated yesterday from the playoffs as they lost 26-23 despite Williams having a good game including a sack and a forced fumble. As of yet there are no clues as to why the shootings happened. Full story here on 7News.com (Denver).

Indy?s Win Is Good For Ravens
2006-12-22 14:34:01
When Peyton Manning fired four TDs against the Bengals, three of which landed in the hands of Marvin Harrison, he was able to hand the Rave ns the AFC North title. His interception-free game meant the Colts also improved out t 11-3 for the season. No matter what the Bengals did, they couldn’t crack the Colts - either on the ground against the league’s worst rush defence, or in the air with Palmer failing to pick up a TD while also managing to fumble a grand total of four times. Each side kicked for scores in the opening and closing quarter but the Colts outscored the Bengals 14-7 in the second and 14-3 in the third, three TDs going Harrison’s way to wrap things up with a 34-16 lead, leaving Carson Palmer’s men in an 8-6 position, tied four-ways for the two AFC wildcard slots. Hopefully things will improve for Cinti against the Broncos on Sunday while the Colts shouldn’t see any problem this time getting past the Texans.

Questions Raised About David Carr
2006-12-22 14:34:01
David Carr needs to get out of Texas. Thats my opinion anyway, whether others agree with me or not is another thing. Maybe a trip to Oakland or something, improve the fates of the Raiders and Carr himself. Sunday was a bad day for Carr who threw no less than 4 interceptions in a 40-7 mauling by the Patriots. Not only that but the chap was sacked 4 times during the game and now has more interceptions than he does scores for the season. Speaking after the game… This is as hard as anything I’ve gone through playing football. I’ve never had to work so hard to achieve so little. You wish you had the answers, and if I did I would just go out there and find a way to win. I will never lose my confidence in what I can do. I still know what I’m capable of doing with the football in my hand. Yet Gary Kubaik won’t be drawn into a discussion about the future of the Texans QB. The Eagle has a nice piece on it…

Brees, Romo for Pro Bowl
2006-12-20 20:32:01
Well well well, there’s something I didn’t see coming! Not the fact that that Drew Brees has made Pro Bowl starter - I think from the start of the season that was going to be a given and I’ve been an advocate for him since September - but Tony Romo making the Pro Bowl . If you had asked anyone at the beginning of the season as to who would be the NFC’s QB in Hawaii come next February, Romo would have been WELL down on the list - but there he is, likely to start the second half of the game in Honolulu. The most notable fact I suppose is that the Chargers and Bears share 16 players between them on the NFC and AFC rosters, the Chargers with nine while the Bears have seven including the likes of last year’s Defensive Rookie Of The Year Shawn Merriman (Chargers) and this year’s record-breaking rookie Devon Hester, who has scored six returns for TDs this season so far - one a missed field goal, two on kickoff returns and three on punt returns. Other nota...

Will Brian Griese Play This Weekend?
2006-12-20 02:30:02
Thats the question on a lot of peoples minds. Now that the Bears have home advantage in the playoffs, its likely that most of the starters will take it hand for the windup of the season, which means that Brian Griese may well yet get to play this season for the Bears. The Bears have had a great season to date but Lovie Smith and the fans alike know that changes are going to have to be rang over the holiday season if the team is to progress as a unit and make a serious challenge for the Super Bowl. In fairness, I’d still see the Ravens putting in a good claim for it but Chicago aren’t going to stop for love nor money. The changes of course mean that starters will be swapped out for the last two games of the regular season with Brian Griese in line to replace Rex Grossman. But, Grossman went and threw an interception-free 339 yards at the weekend against the Buccaneers so maybe he won’t sit out at all. Still, the Sports Network gives plenty to think about.

Third Straight Title Tonight For Seahawks?
2006-12-16 14:28:01
The Seattle Seahawks have a chance at taking the NFC West title for the third year in a row when they face the hapless 49ers tonight in the first game of Week 15 of NFL action. Hopes are high that the win tonight will also take them that bit closer to a playoff spot with Darrell Jackson quoted as saying “We’re going to get in the playoffs one way or the other”. Of course, the Seahawks would be a bit more comfortable had they not lost to the Cards last weekend but there’s nothing they can do about it now except press on and look for a win in their remaining three games - starting tonight.

I Should Pay More Attention?
2006-12-13 02:26:02
…to my fantasy football team. I missed two weeks of action when I was away in Canada and missed another few during the season. Couple that with some general forgetfulness I now lie at 4-10 for the season in the West Division, bottom of the standings overall in the league. Of course, the fact that Drew Bledsoe and Jake Plummer both got benched, McGahee and Joe Horn struggle with injuries, and the Panthers have fallen apart at the seems defensively since losing to the Falcons on the opening day of the season my team is pretty much doomed anyway. Better luck next year Ken!

So Disappointed - Saints Hammer Cowboys
2006-12-13 02:26:02
When Julius Jones sprinted for 77 yards in the opening stages of the first quarter last night I thought we were going to have a mammoth game. Drew Brees obviously wasn’t listening. The former Charger went for 5TDs as he just keeps getting better and better this season, the Saint s clocking up a massive 42 points between the second and third quarters. No big comeback from Tony Romo this week, no massive running game from Jones or Barber, just pure class on the part of the Saints. The Cowboy s run off with their tails between their legs but still have a single-game advantage in the NFC East, something they’ll hope to hold onto heading into week 15. I still reckon though that 2006 is the year of the Ravens

Ravens Almost There
2006-12-13 02:26:02
Fair play to the Baltimore Rave ns - they’re almost there. The Bengals won again tonight but the Raven s made sure that they’re just a game away from taking the division with a 20-10 victory over the Chiefs - the first time a visiting team has won at the Arrowhead in 11 years. Mark Clayton thought he’d just be on returns for the day but his 87-yard receiving TD from Steve McNair in the third quarter sure helped the Ravens along their way. Going into the half, Baltimore had a six point lead with Matt Stover having kicked the only scores of the first and second quarter, going from 41 and 23 yards respectively. Then Clayton exploded in the third to take McNair’s pass for 87 yards to extend the Ravens lead to 13-0 before Lawrence Tynes grabbed 3 from 49 yards. Jamal Lewis took a one yard run to bring the score to 20-3 with under three minutes remaining in the fourth before the Chiefs used the 2-minute warning to their advantage to try grab a score, Trent Green find...
