Describing the Pleasure of Squishing Dandelions Between Your Fingers as Lin
2008-03-01 09:31:00
Several days ago I wrote a post about how Dandelions bring back memories of my childhood long past. The inspiration was contributing to my angst of knowing I had another birthday coming up and was not looking forward to it. Birthdays are something that I have not looked forward to as the years pass and this one was one that need to be pushed out of my mind. I wanted an escape from the everyday emotions of life that always seem to unravel right before our eyes. This brought me to the inspiration of how could I create an emotional linkbait that would still motivate active users of social media to create a return of emotional investment by way of social recognition. The experiment was a success in my opinion. It helped me to get to know several readers of the Collective-Thoughts blog much better than I would have if I were to have written a white paper about the intricacies of linkbait instead of showing the over all results. It also helped me, or should I say it pulled me ou...

Earthquake in the Solomon Islands
2007-04-07 22:29:00
Earthquake in the Solo mon Island s, lifted the Solomons island metres from the sea exposing the coral reefs! RANONGGA, Solomon Islands (AFP) - The force of this week's Solomons earthquake has lifted an island in the South Pacific archipelago and pushed out its shoreline by tens of metres, exposing surrounding reefs. The remote island of Ranongga in the western Solomon Islands used to have submerged coral reefs that attracted scuba divers from around the world. But since Monday's massive earthquake in the Solomon Islands, the reefs are now exposed above the water and are dying, an AFP reporter and photographer have seen. The AFP team, which travelled to Ranongga on a chartered outboard after the quake, saw exposed reefs bleaching in the sun, and covered with dead fish, eels, clams and other marine life. The 8.0-magnitude quake, caused by a shift in the Earth's tectonic plates, triggered a tsunami that killed at least 34 people in the remote western Solomons ...

Fishermen catch giant shortraker rockfish
2007-04-07 04:02:00
Fishermen catch giant shortraker rockfish ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A commercial fishing boat hauled in what may have been one of the oldest creatures in Alaska — a giant rockfish estimated to be about a century old. The 44-inch, 60-pound female shortraker rockfish was caught last month by the catcher-processor Kodiak Enterprise as it trawled for pollock 2,100 feet below the surface, south of the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea. The Seattle-based vessel, owned by Trident Seafoods, pulled up an estimated 75 tons of pollock and 10 bright-orange rockfish. Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle measured, photographed and documented the fish. They removed an ear bone, the otolith, which contains growth rings similar to rings in the trunks of trees. They estimate the rockfish was 90 to 115 years old. That's toward the upper end of the known age limit for shortraker rockfish, said Paul Spencer of t...

16-Pound Bonefish Caught in Keys
2007-03-27 21:31:00
16 Pound Bone fish Caught in the Florida Keys out of Islamorada WOW, a 16 pound Bonefish! Time to hit Florida Keys and Biscayne Bay!!! I still have not caught a Bonefish I could show off. Other than 2 fish caught more than 30 years ago in South Africa, no one has caught a bonefish as large as Bob Schroeder did last week while fishing out of Islamorada with guide Paul DiMaura. The bonefishes are a family (Albulidae) of ray-finned fish that are popular as game fish in Florida, select locations in the South Pacific, and the Bahamas where two bonefish are on their 10 cent coin, and elsewhere. The family is small, with eight species in two genera. Presently the bonefishes are in their own order: Albuliformes. The spiny eels (Notacanthidae) and halosaurs (Halosauridae) were previously classified in this order, but are now, according to FishBase given their own order, Notacanthiformes. The world record for largest bonefish is a 16.3 pound example caught off Islamorada, Florida, on Mar...
