The ongoing issue of F1 being environmentally unfriendly has come up once again. This time the European Parliament has asked Formula 1 to change their rules so that environmentally friendly technologies like bio-fuels, four-cylinder engines or hybrid can be more easily applied in favor of more environmentally friendly technology. bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 This issue has been both a positive and a negative for me over the years. I remember the times where teams had their own labs where they concocted bizarre fuel formulas to make their car faster. Well, sure, the result in many cases was more speed, but every time a car was started, billows and billows of who knows what chemicals were injected into the atmosphere. Not only was this a serious environmental issue, it was as we know, a serious safety issue because of terrible pit fires and horrendous fires in crashes. Fernando Alonso hopped into his familiar Renault today at Jerez and he didn’t dissapoint those watching by tuning out the fastest time of the day. Not bad for a guy who hasn’t stepped into an F1 car since Brazil. Must be the 2 aces on the back of his helmet that gave him luck. 2008 F1 Testing Begins at Jerez

Testing at jerez. 2008 testing got underway today with 9 of the 11 teams on track. Weather was a bit of a story in the morning with a wet track to start things off, but it certainly didn’t faze Ferrari as Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa turned in the fastest times on the day. McLaren, Ferrari and Toyota had their flashy new cars churning up the track, but Felipe Massa’s new F2008 showed a first bug when he lost track time with an unspecified mechanical problem. A relatively quick fix and Massa was off again and turned out the second fastest lap on the day. bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 It was a good showing for Toro Rosso with Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais finishing the day with Vettel grabbing the 4th fastest time and Bourdais taking 6th fastest time. Today BMW Sauber revealed their F1.08 to a large crowd of media at BMW Weld in Munich. In canada where I am, noon local time is 6am my time and I was up watching the live streaming video of the launch. Yes, BMW Sauber is my team and I was looking forward to this and the future of this team. bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 I have captured most of this video and split it into 7 smaller files featuring different aspects of the presentation. They can be seen below. The team is now at a full staff of 730, 430 in Hinwil and 300 in Munich. This has lead to more resources and were able to invest much more in development of this car. Just a matter of days now before we see a small flurry of car launches begin. Yes, January is that time, the time where teams are eager to give their new 2008 contenders a splashy entrance before taking to the track for their first public scrutiny. I find these events interesting partly because they really mean nothing at all to anyone but the teams and big money sponsors. It’s a time for photo shoots and and a time for oooohhh and ahhhh and polite applause. Sure, I like a good entrance, a good show, but show me what your car can do before you give yourself a public pat on the back. Is your car fast? Is it glued to the track and smooth through the corners? Can it brake late into a corner and accelerate out of it quicker than your opponent? Jerez isn’t that far off and that’s where the fun really begins. You have got to be good.
