A comeback for Claude Lemieux?
2008-09-24 00:37:00
A very surprising news came out today. At 43-years old and over five years after his last game played in career during the 2002-2003 season, Claude Lemieux announced that he wishes to play again in the NHL.Lemieux's passion for the game is the only explanation for his return. He wishes to represent himself, is not looking for a multi-million dollar deal and is ready to go through the AHL before making it back into the NHL.''Pepe'' has won the Stanley Cup four times with three different clubs in his career including the Montreal Canadiens, the New-Jersey Devils and the Colorado Avalanche. He is remembered as a gritty player who isn't afraid of anyone. Lemieux was a pest for his opponents and was loved by his teammates. In 1986, Lemieux scored the biggest goal of his career during game five of the first round series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Hartford Whalers. The goal is still fresh in my memory as I was a young hockey player myself and had yet to experience a Stanle...

NFL Week 3: Dolphins deflates the Patriots.
2008-09-21 21:59:00
The New-England Patriots ' consecutive regular season winning streak was stopped at 21 this afternoon as the Miami Dolphins completely dominated the matchup to win by the score of 38-13.Miami's runing back Ronnie Brown had a phenomenal game. He participated to every Dolphins touchdown, rushing for 113 yards and four touchdowns and added a touchdown pass to his already very productive day on a tricked pass play. The Dolphins' head coach exploited Brown all game long as he received a total of three snaps in this game.Brown's four touchdowns broke the Dolphins record for most touchdowns in a game, previously held by Paul Warfield since 1973.Incidently, bofore today's game, the last regular season loss for the Patriots was against those same Miami Dolphins late into the 2006 season.(Picture: Ronnie Brown, Getty Images.)

The group phase of the CONCACAF Champions League begun for the Montreal Impact yesterday with a 2-0 victory over Joe Public FC from Trinidad & Tobago.Stefano Pesoli opened the score early into the first quarter on a well played corner while the timely saves of goaltender Matt Jordan kept his team ahead. Tony Donatelli doubled the score at the second minute of the second half. The Saputo Stadium was almost half empty for this important match in the history of the club. The breeze kept some people at home as summer is now over in Canada. Some players from Trinidad & Tobago suffered the discomfort of playing with a mercury below the 10 degrees celsius mark.Montreal, now at 1-0 (+2) in his group, will host FC Atlante from Mexico on September 24th.(Picture: Stefano Pesoli, Canadian Press.)
Italian Grand Prix: A superstar is born.
2008-09-14 16:20:00
Under rainy conditions this weekend, the Italian Grand Prix was the theatre of the first career Formula One victory of Sebastian Vettel. After setting a new record yesterday as being the youngest driver in F1 history to start from the pole position, the German pilot brought his Toro Rosso in first place today. At twenty years old, Vettel sets another F1 record as being the youngest driver to win a Formula One Grand Prix .Fernando Alonso was holding the record of being youngest pilot to register a victory before today's race. The amazing fact about Vettel's win is that it was accomplished with a very ordinary race car. At the same time, the Toro Rosso team also gets it's first taste at victory.Heikki Kovalainen and Robert Kubica completed today's podium. Kubica's performance is also worth of mention as he took the start from the 11th place. A perfect pit stop strategy allowed Kubica to wear the right type of tires at the right time.As for the points leaders, they had to race for t...

Patrick Roy's number to be retired this year.
2008-09-12 17:15:00
At a press conference scheduled yesterday at the Bell centre, the Montreal Canadiens announced that the number 33 worn by the legendary goaltender Patrick Roy will be retired. Before a match with the Boston Bruins on Saturday November 22nd, the hall of famer will see his famous number 33 join the other retired numbers of legends like Maurice Richard, Howie Morenz and Jean Beliveau. The team owner, George Gillett, and the team president, Pierre Boivin, said that they were thrilled to bring back Patrick in the great family of the Montreal Canadiens. The team's rich history over the last hundred years was marked by the passage of Patrick Roy.The team's last two Stanley Cups in 1986 and 1993 were in a large part due to the exceptional talent of Roy in net. Patrick was able to win a hockey game by himself. Roy holds or shares at least 20 team records and as many league records. To this date, Patrick Roy is also the goaltender with the most wins in career. His record of ten consecutive ove...

The former WBC champion Eric Lucas intended to come out of retirement and was training seriously since the month of June for a fight in next December or January. But his plans of coming back to the competition have been seriously jeopardized this week. His four year old daughter Melodie was sick and had a strong case of persistent fever. The Lucas family decided to go on and see a doctor hoping for a minor diagnosis. The news that came out of the examination of Melodie Lucas this week was everything but minor. The young girl was diagnosed this week with a rare form of cancer. A tumor around her kidneys was found by the doctor.Eric Lucas' plans of coming out of retirement are now seriously compromised. At this very moment, there is no official decision as of the continuation of his boxing career. A new kind of fight has now been scheduled for the former champion and his family.I sincerely wish the best for Melodie Lucas and her parents, Eric Lucas and Marie-Claude Descoteaux. My praye...

Belgium Grand Prix: Spectacular until the end.
2008-09-07 15:36:00
The rain appeared during the final two laps of the race and gave the fans the most exciting finish of the season today at the Belgium Grand Prix.Lewis Hamilton had a lot of ground to make up on Kimi Raikkonen after his second and final pit stop. Raikkonen was in control and looked like he was untouchable. But the British driver worked hard and managed to close the gap with the Ferrari driver with only a handful of laps to go.The rain appeared during the last couple of laps and complicated the task for the drivers on the track. The conditions deteriorated quickly and the cars who were still on slick tires at that point were slipping all over the place. The battle between Raikkonen and Hamilton during the final laps was epic. Both cars exchanged the lead twice due to the slippery conditions as both of them slipped and spun virtually at every corner. Kimi Raikkonen finally made a fatal mistake and spun his Ferrari into the wall during the final lap of the race, handing out the victory t...

Bad news for Patrick Carpentier.
2008-08-31 15:05:00
The hiring of Reed Sorenson by Gillett Evernham Motorsports racing team earlier this week will force Patrick Carpentier to find a new team for next year. After a decent first season in the Sprint Cup series, Carpentier will have to look around for an open spot. A couple of options are probably available for him because there are other drivers that will be moving around at the end of the season.I really hope that Patrick will find a spot in the Sprint Cup for next season. He has improoved all season long and the amount of experience gained this year will be precious in the balance in his search of a new contract. The fact that he is not American is probably his worse ennemy. Many sponsors will prefer an American born driver. That is what happened with Gillett Evernham's sponsors when came the time to choose. The sponsors forced the team to choose Sorenson instead of Carpentier.Let's wish good luck to Patrick Carpentier in his search of a new team.(Picture: Patrick Carpentier's NASCA...

First international match for the Montreal Impact.
2008-08-29 15:16:00
The Montreal Impact has qualified themselves to represent Canada at the very first CONCACAF champions league tournament a month ago and were playing their first preliminary round match this week.Their first opponent, the Real Esteli FC from Nicaragua, was at the Saputo stadium in the first of two legs to advance to the next round. Nobody in Canada knew what to expect from this club as they play in an unknown league in Nicaragua.Even if Montreal dominated the game, the result was a 1-0 victory on a goal by Joey Gjertsen at the 42nd minute. Gjertsen struck a missed clearing by a defensemen in the left corner of the goal. The second leg between the two teams will be played on September 2nd in the Honduras because Nicaragua doesn't have a stadium good enough for the FIFA rules. The winner of the aggregate will be qualified in a group of four teams that will compete during the second part of September.(Picture: Joey Gjertsen, Canadian Press.)

U.S. Open: Unlucky draw for Wozniak.
2008-08-25 20:25:00
The final Grand Slam tournament of 2008 has begun today, the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows will be disputed for the next two weeks.Aleksandra Wozniak, the only Canadian qualified in singles competition had a very difficult task today as she faced the ex-No. 1 player in the world, Lindsay Davenport. Davenport eliminated Wozniak in two short sets of 6-4 and 6-2.Later today we will see in action the new No. 1 player in the world and gold medallist in Beijing, Rafael Nadal. Nadal will play a qualified player in his first round match. I have seen Nadal in better shape. He seemed a little tired and he looks like he lost an important amount of weight during his trip in China.A lot of action and a lot of tennis is still to be played. We should have an exciting two weeks of tennis ahead of us. Let's not forget Roger Federer who will try to save his awful singles season with a victory at the Open.(Picture: Aleksandra Wozniak, Canadian Press.)

European Grand Prix: Massa re-launches the championship.
2008-08-24 15:32:00
The Formula One circus was in Valencia for the first time in it's history and Felipe Massa in his Ferrari won in a little bit of controversy. The Brazilian driver did commit a mistake when he left his stall after his final stop. He almost collided with Adrian Sutil in the pit lane and this event will be reviewed by the officials. If the result holds, the race for the title will really be in the balance. The second place for Lewis Hamilton today allowed him to stay in front but the lead could be reduced to a mere 6 points over Massa.Starting from the third position on the grid, Robert Kubica finished in third place and now stands only two points behind Kimi Raikkonen who had to retire today because of another blown engine for Ferrari. This is already the fourth engine failure for the Scuderia this season, very uncharacteristic for the team. Just before the engine failure, Raikkonen ran over one of his teammate in the pitlane during his final pit stop. Another race to forget for the de...

European Grand Prix: Massa on pole.
2008-08-23 15:35:00
The European Grand Prix was presented for the first time in Valencia, Spain. There is no previous data for anyone and it should level the field for this weekend. The drivers and the teams are exploring new grounds this weekend.Felipe Massa finished the qualifying session with the best time and will start from the pole position tomorrow. It is a first pole for Ferrari since the French Grand Prix . But there is no clear domination from any team as the drivers looks to be randomly positionned on the starting grid.Lewis Hamilton in his McLaren will start from the second position while Robert Kubica in the BMW-Sauber will go from the third place. The two Toro Rosso cars are having a good weekend this far as they both placed in the top ten on the grid. The young phenom, Sebastian Vettel, will start from the sixth place while the rookie Sebastien Bourdais took the tenth spot on the grid.European Grand Prix starting grid:Pole : Felipe Massa (Ferrari) 1:38.9892-Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) 1:39.199...
Emilie Heymans mimics Alexandre Despaties.
2008-08-21 16:12:00
After failing to win a medal in singles competition at her last two attempts on the 10 meters tower, Emilie Heymans handled the pressure and finished in second place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. With a total of 437,05 points, Heymans splitted the two skeletal Chinese divers on the podium. In fact, before the last round of diving, Emilie was in first place by a small margin. But a perfect dive by Chen Ruolin of China was good enough for a gold medal for the 15-year-old diver. Wang Xin finished in third place. The podium finishers can be described as being two childrens and a fully grown woman. The two Chinese divers' combined body weight does not exceeds Heymans' body weight. With that fact in mind, we can only admire Heyman's performance. The Canadian diver wins her third Olympic medal in career after winning a medal at the synchronized diving competition in Sydney and Athenes.Another Canadian was present in this final. Marie-Eve Marleau finished with a total of 332,10 poin...
Silver with a taste of gold.
2008-08-20 15:05:00
After winning a silver medal from the 3 meters spring board at the 2004 Olympics in Athenes, Alexandre Despaties has repeated the exploit yesterday in Beijing. The athlete from Laval, Quebec, was simply exceptionnal. After missing four months this year because of a broken foot and a back injury, Despaties was not a sure bet for a podium finish. The level of competition was high as Dimitri Sautin from Russia, He Chong and Qin Kai from China were in great shape.Despaties did not commit any major mistake during the final. He gave his best and finished in second place with a total of 536.65 points. Only He Chong was better. In fact, Chong was impressive, immaculate, untouchable. When he was asked to comment his performance, Alexandre Despaties said that this silver medal had a taste of gold after this horrible year 2008 that kept him away from competition for too long. The situation was so uncertain for him that even a great magazine like Sports Illustrated doubted him and excluded the mul...

A dream weekend for Andrew Ranger.
2008-08-18 15:23:00
This weekend, the 39th edition of the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres was presented in front of a huge and loud crowd. The narrow circuit going through the streets of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec is the oldest road course in North-America. Over the course of the last four decades, many legendary pilots like Gilles Villeneuve, Jacques Villeneuve, Paul Gentilozzi, Ron Fellows, Alexandre Tagliani, Patrick Carpentier and James Hunt participated to the event since it's first edition in 1967.I had the privilege to be on the site with a couple of friends yesterday and we had a great time. We sat at the start/finish line to experience the top speed of the Atlantic series and NASCAR Canada race cars. It was my very first NASCAR experience and I was impressed by the power of those cars. The loudness of those engines running at full capacity is simply amazing. The NASCAR Canada series was the last race presented this weekend. Two french-canadians (Alexandre Tagliani and Andrew Ranger ) were respectively ...

It took eight days but finally Canada has won it's first medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The country has won a total of three medals today. A gold, a silver and a bronze medal. The first gold medal for Canada was won by Carol Huynh, an Olympic wrestler. In her perfect run, she defeated Mariya Stadnik from Azerbaijan by 4-3 and 2-0. Then in her second match, Carol Huynh defeated Hyung-Joo Kim from Korea by 1-0 and 1-0. Her third match was won over Kazakstan's Tatyana Babatyuk by 1-0 and 4-0. The gold medal match was disputed with Chiharu Icho, a match that Carol Huynh won by 4-0 and 2-1.The bronze medal won by Canada also came from the women's wrestling team. Tonya Verbeek suffered a loss in the prelims round but came back with two wins to finish on the podium. The silver medal won today by Canada came from David Calder and Scott Frandsen in rowing. So after a long and difficult week, the country is now officially on the board. One week without a podium.
2008-08-15 16:54:00
The 2008 Olympics are now halfway over and Canada is still looking for a first medal. The expectations were to finish in the top 16 but it seems that the objective is impossible to achieve for the country.Despite having problems finding a rythm, some of our athletes offered their best performance in career. For example, Mike Brown registered a new Canadian record at the 200m breast stroke but finished in fourth position. Only a mere 9/100th of a second from a bronze medal. The Canadian delegation is not pushing on the panic button just yet. Historically, the better performances for the country are coming during the second week of the Olympics. It will not be different in this edition because we still have to see the best from the Canadian athletes.Alexandre Despaties, multiple world champion and bronze medallist at the 2004 Athenes games in diving will begin his quest for a gold medal this weekend. We also anxiously wait for the finals in rowing that have to be run this weekend. A co...

Montreal Grand Prix: A race full of surprises.
2008-06-08 22:52:00
Historically, the Canadian Grand Prix is the theatre of exceptional performances and has a lot of surprises in store. Today's edition was no different. The 30th Canadian Grand Prix was the occasion for the BMW-Sauber to shine. Not only Robert Kubica finished in first place for the first time in his career but Nick Heidfeld who was starting from the eight spot finished in second place. A pleasant and unexpected one-two finish for the team who finishes in first place for a first time also. The main incident of the race came at the 19th lap when the Force India of Adrian Sutil stalled and was forced to retire. The safety car was sent out on the track and the leaders decided to pit in. Lewis Hamilton who was starting from the pole position came out of the pits after his service behind Robert Kubica and Kimi Raikkonen. Hamilton committed a fatal mistake when he came out of the pitlane. He did not see the red light and the stalled Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen and rammed him. Both drivers had ...

The end of hockey's theme song?
2008-06-07 01:12:00
Yesterday, a shocking news for Canadian hockey fans came out. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) announced that the theme song of the very popular TV show named ''Hockey night in Canada'' will be changed for a new one at the start of the next season. The song composed in 1968 by Dolores Claman is one of the most known theme song in Canada and the majority of Canadians that tune in each and every saturday evening think that the news of it's retirement is a bad idea. Some people like myself have known and appreciated the theme song for their entire lives. The song has been used for the last 40 years and every time the CBC used it, Mme Claman was receiving $500 in royalties. The idea of not hearing it anymore is really sad. Many of us associate ice hockey with this tune while we anticipate and prepare for action from the first few notes on. Many hockey fans are deceived and angry about the decision. Some of them have said that they will not tune in anymore in protest. A peti...
