Montreal-Boston series: A seventh game is needed.
2008-04-20 08:29:00
Yesterday, game six of the first round series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins was nothing less than an emotional roller coaster ride for the fans gathered at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston. The Boston Bruins deserve all the credit in this game. They have worked very hard and rallied from a one-goal deficit three times during the lenght of the game. After a goal from Chris Higgins during the first period, Phil Kessel tied the game at 1-1 early into the second period. Then Tomas Plekanec getting out of the penalty box received a pass from Steve Begin and went all alone with goaltender Tim Thomas. Plekanec netted his first goal of the series and gave a 2-1 Montreal lead after two periods.A great main course was served to the fans during the third period. A total of six goals were scored during this exciting last frame. Vladimir Sobotka tied the game at 2-2 early into the third on a very discutable play. The Bruins looked to be offside at the Montreal blue line but...

A cold shower hits Montreal.
2008-04-18 03:32:00
The Montreal Canadiens were looking to put away the Boston Bruins at the Bell centre tonight. Up three games to one in this first round series, the Canadiens dropped their intensity level thinking the Bruins have given up.The game started well for Montreal when Alex Kovalev scored the first goal of the game during the first period. The crowd was loud in the Bell centre and everybody in the building could almost taste the victory. But the Bruins never gave up. First, Phil Kessel tied the game up on a power play during the second period. Kessel, a healthy scratch for games two, three and four of the series really turned the game around. The third period was entirely in favor of Boston who scored four unanswered goals on goaltender Carey Price. Glen Metropolit, Zdeno Chara, Marco Sturm and Vladimir Svobotka scored a goal each to extend the series to a sixth game.Final score: Boston Bruins 5 - Montreal Canadiens 1 (Montreal leads the series by 3-2)The Bruins with this important victory a...

First career shutout for Carey Price.
2008-04-16 20:02:00
The Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins were facing each other for game four of their first round series yesterday evening at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston.Only one goal was scored during this game. Patrice Brisebois scored during a power play late into the second period with a precise shot thru a crowd. Carey Price protected the slim lead and blocked 27 shots on his way for his very first career playoff shutout. The rookie goaltender handled the pressure very well.We witnessed a real playoff game. A lot of bodychecks and a low scoring affair. Game 5 will be played tomorrow at the Bell centre. The Canadiens will have the opportunity to put away the Bruins in front of their own fans.Final score: Montreal Canadiens 1 - Boston Bruins 0 (Montreal leads the series by 3-1)Other scores:Philadelphia Flyers 6 - Washington Capitals 3 (Philadelphia leads the series by 2-1)San Jose Sharks 3 - Calgary Flames 2 (The series is tied at 2-2)Colorado Avalanche 5 - Minnesota Wild 1 (The serie...

The recipe for self-destruction.
2008-04-15 09:42:00
The Ottawa Senators are now only one loss from elimination. Yesterday, a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins gave a 3-0 series lead to Pittsburgh. If we go back only three months ago, nobody would've believed that the Senators would ever finish 7th in the Eastern conference and nobody would've believed that the Sens could ever lose their first three playoff games. Three months ago, the Senators were comfortably on top of the Eastern conference and looked like a sure bet for the playoffs.I have been following hockey for over three decades and I cannot recall such a collapse during a single season. So what happened with the Senators? How can such a solid looking team completely collapse? The answer is self-destruction.So how did the Senators went from serious contender to figurant?First, we have to take a look at the players, more specifically at the team's unity and chemistry. During the course of the season, goaltender Ray Emery was not satisfied being pushed aside by...

Bruins breaks the curse.
2008-04-14 13:22:00
After thirteen losses in a row versus the Montreal Canadiens, the Boston Bruins have finally won a game versus their arch-rivals and broke the curse.A goaltender duel was presented to the fans at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston yesterday. Both Tim Thomas and Carey Price have played a solid game as they only allowed a single goal each during regulation. The Bruins scored first in this one during the first period with a goal from the young 19-year old Milan Lucic. The Canadiens replied during the second period when Tom Kostopoulos slipped a puck under Tim Thomas to even up the score. The regulation ended with a 1-1 tie and an overtime period was necessary for the second game in a row. Halfway into the first overtime period, Marc Savard ended the contest with his first goal of the playoffs.Final score: Boston Bruins 2 - Montreal Canadiens 1 (overtime) (Montreal leads the series by 2-1)Game four of the series will be presented on tuesday.Other scores:New-Jersey Devils 4 - New-York Rang...

Kovalev reels in game two.
2008-04-13 08:03:00
Yesterday evening, game two of the first round series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins was presented at the Bell centre. Once again the atmosphere was incredible in the arena. The Canadiens despite being more seriously challenged by Boston compared to the first game of the series managed to take the lead late during the first period on a goal by defensemen Roman Hamrlik. Then during the second frame, Sergei Kostitsyn sent a rebound past Tim Thomas to double the Canadiens' lead. The Bruins never gave up and rallied during the third period of the game. First, Peter Shaefer picked up a rebound and sent it over Carey Price's shoulder. Then a little later on during a Bruins power play, Alex Kovalev took a selfish slashing penalty. The five-on-three opportunity was enough for the Bruins who tied the score at 2-2 with the double man-advantage goal by David Krejci. An overtime period was necessary to declare a winner. The Bruins self-destructed during the first overtime p...

The Montreal Canadiens began their quest for the Stanley Cup yesterday as the first game of the first round series with the Boston Bruins was presented at the Bell centre. The Bell centre was filled to capacity and the fans were not disappointed by the home team. The Canadiens exploded out of the gates, bringing the loud roar from the crowd. With just over two minutes of play, Sergei Kostitsyn and his brother Andrei Kostitsyn had scored a goal each. The Canadiens played a very solid game as they only allowed a goal to Boston. Shane Hnidy deflected a shot from the blue line to bring the Bruins within a single goal. But that's about all the Bruins could do during this game. The Canadiens dominated the Bruins physically. Some very good bodychecks were distributed by the home team. Zdeno Chara was often targetted by the Canadiens players. Bryan Smolinski and Tom Kostopoulos completed the score for Montreal. In net, Carey Price had his first playoff experience in career and was never seriou...
2008 NHL playoffs: Round 1 (continued)
2008-04-09 12:16:00
So here it is, today is the beginning of the 2008 NHL playoffs as four matchups are scheduled today.Yesterday I flew across the East, now let's have a look at the Western conference matchups:Nashville Predators (8) vs Detroit Red Wings (1)The Red Wings have won yet another Presidents trophy this season with a total of 115 points. The fact that they play in a poor division helps a lot winning those trophies year after year. But we cannot look away from offensive stars like Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg in the Wings lineup. Nicklas Lidstrom has been steady as ever on defense. They look like a steamroller to be frank. The Predators will try to pull off a huge upset here! Don't get me wrong but the Predators winning this series would be a huge upset. I just don't believe that they can pull this off. So if you are in for a longshot, pick this team.My prediction: Detroit in five games.Calgary Flames (7) vs San Jose Sharks (2)This series promises to be a great one. The San Jose Sha...

2008 NHL playoffs: First round.
2008-04-08 18:38:00
So this is the time of the year once again, the 2008 NHL playoffs are set to begin this week. What team should we follow more closely? Who will win the Holy Grail?Let's go thru the Eastern conference first round matchups:Boston Bruins (8) vs Montreal Canadiens (1):The Montreal Canadiens have surprized every hockey analyst this season by finishing in first position of the conference. Not a lot of hockey analysts gave any chance to the Canadiens this season but here they are, standing atop of the conference and with the ice advantage thru the first three rounds. The Boston Bruins also had a notable season. With the loss of their main offensive weapon Patrice Bergeron, very early into the season, nobody thought that Boston would be able to get into the playoff round. Both teams faced each other eight times during the regular season and the Canadiens have won all of them. In fact, Montreal has won their last 11 matchups versus the Bruins. I do not expect a very close series. My prediction...

Montreal Canadiens: Eastern conference champions!
2008-04-07 11:30:00
The last match of the regular season has been played in the NHL and the Montreal Canadiens with 104 points clinched the Eastern conference championship. The last time the club has won the conference championship was in 1992.So for the first round of the playoffs, The Montreal Canadiens will face the Boston Bruins who finished 8th in the East. Montreal and Boston played each other eight times this season and Montreal has won all eight games. I expect that this trend will continue. I think the Habs have what it takes to take the Bruins out in five games.I will add more details about the 2008 NHL Playoffs, daily. I will also give my view on every first round series.

Bahrain Grand Prix: Ferrari dominates.
2008-04-06 16:48:00
Today, for the third leg of the Formula One championship, Robert Kubica in his BMW-Sauber had the privilege to start from the pole position in front of the Ferrari s.But the Ferraris did not waste any time to take the lead. After the second lap, both Ferrari drivers were in front of Kubica's BMW. While Ferrari was taking the lead of the race, Lewis Hamilton completely missed his start, collided with Fernando Alonso and then went back all the way to the 18th position. After the numerous position changes following the start of the race, the situation stabilized itself and we saw a lot less position changes in the later stages of the competition. Both BMW-Sauber cars finished behind the Ferrari but are now leading the constructors championship after three events. We could have an interesting 3-way race for the constructors championship until the end of the season. With all his problems encoutered during the early stages of the race, Lewis Hamilton did not score any points and finished 13t...

2008-04-05 18:19:00
Robert Kubica in his BMW-Sauber has registered his very first career pole position today at the Bahrain Grand Prix.Behind Kubica, all the contenders for this season's drivers championship are present. Felipe Massa, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen complete the first two rows. After the second grand prix of the season, I mentionned the fact that if there is no major breakdown this season, the BMW-Sauber could very well be a serious contender for the constructors championship. Kubica's pole today only confirms that the BMW is now really only an inch behind the Ferraris and McLarens. While Fernando Alonso still struggles with his Renault this season (he only qualified 10th), the surprise of this qualifying session came from Jenson Button who managed to rank in the top ten with his Honda. Here is the top 10 qualifying positions for the Bahrein Grand Prix:Pole :Robert Kubica (BMW-Sauber) 1:33.0962. Toronto defeats Montreal at the ACC.
2008-03-30 18:42:00
The Toronto Maple Leafs took advantage of the downgraded version of the Montreal Canadiens to defeat them by a score of 4-2 saturday evening. Jiri Tlusty and Anton Stralman both scored two goals, providing all of Toronto's scoring. Stralman's second goal, an unassisted effort, was scored on a dynamic end-to-end rush, finished by a wicked wrist shot. The most costful for Montreal is the small general letdown that resulted in a number of minor injuries. Sometimes, playing to avoid injuries result in more injuries. The Canadiens' head coach Guy Carbonneau had to juggle with his linuep all game long. To add to the difficulty level for him, Ryan O'Byrne has been ejected for elbowing an opponent during the early part of the first period. This ejection thinned the Habs' defensive roster. No Komisarek, no O'Byrne, no Streit were available for the coach. But despite all the lineup turmoil, Guy Carbonneau was proactive and tried a new combination, something new that might spice up j...
The comeback team has struck again.
2008-03-29 14:06:00
The Montreal Canadiens has completed another comeback yesterday to defeat the Buffalo Sabres at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo. The Canadiens were completely dominated and bottled in their own end of the ice during the first two periods of yesterdat's game. Goaltender Carey Price has kept his team in the game during the early part. Only Drew Stafford for Buffalo and Alex Kovalev for the Habs had scored goals during the first two frames. Then into the third period, Nathan Paetssh and Daniel Paillé provided a three to one lead for the Sabres. The victory was almost in the bag for Buffalo. But a mistake was made by the Sabres... they have decided to play a more defensive style to protect their lead.Tomas Plekanec with less than three minutes to go to the game has reduced the Sabres' lead to only one goal on a power play. Then during the last minute of the game, the Canadiens pulled their goalie for a sixth player and managed to tie the game up with only 14 seconds to go. Tomas Plekanec, wit...

Seven games for Jonathan Roy, five for Patrick.
2008-03-25 23:03:00
The Québec Junior Hockey League has laid out a string of mild suspensions today regarding last saturday night brawl involving Jonathan Roy of the Québec Remparts at the Goerges Vézina arena in Chicoutimi. The verdict is in my own opinion is not nearly severe enough. The league has suspended goaltender Jonathan Roy for seven games while his father and coach of the Québec Remparts, Patrick Roy, is suspended for only five games.Other minor suspensions to the Québec Remparts have been handed. Maxime Lacroix (three games), Marc-Olivier Vallerand (two games). As for the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, head coach Richard Martel has been suspended for two games for being unable to control his own players while defensemen Sébastien Rioux who left the penalty box to join the brawl has been suspended for six games. Charles-Antoine Messier (two games) and Antoine Roussel (one game) completes the string of suspensions. Both teams have also been fined for 4000$ each by the league. In my opinion, the league c...

Montreal clinches a playoff spot.
2008-03-25 08:25:00
The Montreal Canadiens are now officially qualified into the 2008 NHL playoffs. Yesterday, the team has defeated the Ottawa Senators by the score of 7-5 at the Bell centre to ensure their place into the spring competition. The Canadiens played a perfect first and second period in yesterday's game. After two frames, the Habs were leading by an impressive 7-1. But the Senators did sent a message to the home team during the third period. The Senators went firing on all cylinders and scored four unanswered goals during the final period. But the Canadiens' lead was just too large to be covered.Andrei Kostitsyn with two goals, his second one counting as his 25th of the season, Andrei Markov, Christopher Higgins, Francis Bouillon, Mikhail Grabovski and Tom Kostopoulos scored for the winners during the first two periods.Dany Heatley with two goals during the third period, Antoine Vermette, Martin Lapointe and Jason Spezza replied for the Senators.Goaltender Carey Price registered his 20th ...

Patrick Roy's son involved in a fight.
2008-03-24 06:39:00
The Quebec Junior Hockey League's first round series between the Quebec Remparts and the Chicoutimi Saguenéens promised a heated rivalry. Both teams are definatly arch-rivals and many incidents occured between those two teams in the past.Saturday evening, the second match of the series was presented in Chicoutimi and with the home team up by the score of 7-1 late into the second period, a brawl developped on the ice. It is obvious that the visiting team was frustrated and wanted to let off some steam. Nothing really exceptionnal and nothing really surprizing up to that point. But according to some spectators present in the arena and according to some video tape under investigation by the league, the head coach of the Quebec Remparts and ex-NHL legendary goaltender Patrick Roy has presumely invited his own son Jonathan Roy to go thru the lenght of the ice and engage the opposing goaltender, Bobby Nadeau. Nadeau did not want any part of this fight and tried to protect himself the best...

Malaysian Grand Prix: Ferrari's revenge sabotaged by Massa.
2008-03-23 09:06:00
The second leg of the 2008 Formula One championship was run today on the Sepang circuit in Kuala Lumpur. Both McLaren-Mercedes cars were penalized by the FIA after the qualifying session for running at a very slow pace after registering their qualifying time. They both were backed up by five positions on the starting grid. The Ferrari cars occupied the first row on the starting grid. Without any doubt, the Scuderia possessed the best setup for this race. Felipe Massa was on pole while Kimi Raikkonen was second on the grid. After a clean start, the two Ferraris were flying ahead, untouchable for their competitors. Then, Kimi Raikkonen managed to pass Felipe Massa during the first pitstop. Everything was running smoothly for Ferrari up to that point. We were already expecting a perfect one-two finish for them. But Felipe Massa sabotaged the perfect weekend for Ferrari when he lost control of his car. Massa exceeded the limits of his race car in a curve and spun into the gravel, unable t...

A perfect eight for eight versus Boston.
2008-03-23 02:57:00
The Montreal Canadiens completed their sweep of the Boston Bruins at the Bell centre tonight with a 3-2 victory acquired at the shootout session. This was without any doubt the best performance from Boston in those eight matches against the Canadiens but it still wasn't enough to beat them. Andrei Markov and Andrei Kostitsyn scored for Montreal while Marc Savard and Petteri Nokelainen managed to score on goaltender Carey Price. After sixty minutes and the score tied at 2-2, the overtime period was marked by a total domination of the Canadiens. Tim Thomas was simply spectacular to preserve the Bruins' hopes in this one.A shootout session was necessary to declare a winner and only Saku Koivu managed to score on Tim Thomas to give the victory to the Canadiens. Combined with the victory of the Toronto Maple Leafs over the Ottawa Senators, the Canadiens now have a five point lead in the northeast division.Montreal and Ottawa will meet monday at the Bell centre.Mike Komisarek injuried. An ...

The russian player has just released a DVD this week in which he is displaying his skills and training methods. The profits of the sales of the DVD are given to charity. He showcased his stickhandling skills in front of the Bruins' defensemens before leaving Bruins' goaltender Tim Thomas clueless.Andrei Kostitsyn and Michael Ryder has scored the other goals for Montreal. Both teams will meet for a eight and last time on saturday evening. Montreal will have the opportunity to completely sweep the Bruins this season. The Canadiens with 92 points this season are now momentarily back in first place of the Eastern conference, one point in front of the New-Jersey Devils and the Pittsburgh Penguins.(Picture: Alex Kovalev, Getty Images.)
St-Louis defeats Montreal 4-3.
2008-03-19 12:33:00
The St-Louis Blues were visiting the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell centre yesterday evening. Despite being out of the playoff picture already, the Blues played a solid game to defeat the Habs. For a second game in a row, head coach Guy Carbonneau have sent Jaroslav Halak in action. At his 9th start in career at home, Halak had never lost a game at the Bell centre before yesterday night and his performance versus the New York Islanders forced the coach to use him once again.Halak did play a good game in general. His teammates in front of him were not really supportive, except during the third period. A great pass from Sergei Kostitsyn allowed Mikhal Grabovski to score the tying goal halfway into the third period.Bard Boyes was the only player to score a goal during the shootout session, giving the victory to the Blues.Montreal grabbed a point despite the ordinary performance. Hopefully for the fans gathered in the arena, the home team played better as the game developped.Roman Hamrlik finally managed to beat goaltender Rick DiPietro and opened the score during the second period on the power play. Alex Kovalev and Guillaume Latendresse scored during the third period to give a bit of breathing room to goalteder Jaroslav Halak who did very well. Australian Grand Prix: Car cemetary.
2008-03-16 07:11:00
An eventful race was presented today for the first leg of the 2008 Formula One championship as only seven cars managed to cross the finish line. The safety car has been used three times during the lenght of the race.Lewis Hamilton in his McLaren-Mercedes was imperial as he dominated his opponents all race long. The young British driver starts his season on the right foot with a solid victory. His march towards the 2008 drivers championship has begun. As for the rest of the field, many spectacular incidents ponctuated this race. The most spectacular one involved Timo Glock in his Toyota. His car litterally took off and disintegrated on the impact. The clowns of this first race of the season are without any doubt both Ferrari drivers who didn't manage to cross the finish line. First, Felipe Massa took out David Coulthard who was rightfully running in front of him. Massa continued for a couple of laps after the incident before retiring. Tomorrow for the Australian Grand Prix, the first race of this 2008 season, Lewis Hamilton will have the priviledge to start from the pole position. This qualifying session has been full of surprizes. First, the defending champion, Kimi Raikkonen, will have to start from the 16th place because of mechanical problems. His Ferrari has stalled just before the entrance of the pitlane, disqualifying him by a new rule. This new rule states that any car stalling on the circuit during a qualifying session is automatically disqualified. A huge task is awaiting him for tomorrow's race. Also, Fernando Alonso, who is now back within the Renault team has failed to place his car in the top ten. Alonso will start from the 12th position, a surprize itself. As for the pleasant surprizes, Robert Kubica in his BMW-Sauber has qualified himself in second place while a surprizing Sebastian Vettel in his Toro Rosso has managed to place 10th. With only four weeks of regular season hockey to go, the voting members could have a very difficult decision to make.Who REALLY is the most valuable player for his team this season? In many occasions, the player ending the season with the most points takes away the honor. Mainly, because the Hart Trophy recipient leads his team into the playoffs while dominating the score sheets all season long. This season, with the equity of the forces all around the National Hockey League and the timely injuries to star players of the caliber of Sidney Crosby, Dany Heatley, Paul Stastny, Henrik Zetterberg and Daniel Alfredsson, the decision is not carved in stone just yet.Let's make a scan of who's in line for the Hart Trophy this year:Alexander Ovechkin. An obvious top three nominee for the Hart trophy this season. He's the only player with more than fifty goals this far. There is only a small detail: The Washington Capitals must make the playoffs for him to attract a majority of votes from the...
