Montreal Canadiens on a win streak.
2008-12-05 15:32:00
The New York Rangers were at the Bell centre yesterday and faced a solid Montreal Canadiens team. All in all, it was one of the best showing of the season for the Habs in this 6-2 victory. The team coached by Guy Carbonneau notched a third win in a row and despite a troubled month of November, the team is holding it's ground along the top teams of the Eastern conference.Yesterday, goals scored by Andrei Kostitsyn, Alex Tanguay, Maxim Lapierre and Robert Lang sent the Rangers packing early. The Rangers at one point were down 4-0 into the second period and never really got a chance. Even Georges Laraque contributed offensively (with two assists). The Canadiens were wearing a vintage jersey yesterday. The logo of the team during that portion in time was quite different to the one we usually see. As we can see on this picture, the white ''H'' in the middle of the logo becoming a red ''A''.The New Jersey Devils without their star netminder Martin Brodeur will try to stop the strea...
A wild game at the Bell centre.
2008-12-03 16:02:00
The Montreal Canadiens started the month of December with a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Trashers. The third period of this contest was a roller coaster ride for the fans gathered at the Bell centre yesterday. The Canadiens dominated the play during the first two frames and was leading by the score of three to nothing at the start of the third period. Among others, Matt D'Agostini scored his very first NHL goal. The Canadiens were safely rolling towards the win until Georges Laraque forgot to step on the ice with his linemates. The Trashers benefited of this man advantage to score their first goal of the game. A shot from the blue line by Ron Hainsey went past goaltender Carey Price. The gates were open for Atlanta.A minute later, Hainsey scored his second of the game when the puck just passed the goal line on a mad scramble in front of the net.The action resumed only to see this game tied at 3 seven seconds later on yet another goal form the Trashers. Right from the face off, a two-...

The Canadiens' first quarter of the season.
2008-11-25 17:00:00
We are about to complete the first quarter of this 2008-2009 season in the NHL. Some teams have risen up since last season while some are having big problems. The New-Jersey Devils and the Vancouver Canucks for example should have a hard time in the coming weeks. Both teams have lost their star goaltender because of injuries and those teams are now vulnerable. The Canucks have a bit more offensive firepower and could go through these difficult times a little better than the Devils. For the Montreal Canadiens , the 100th season of the club started with an irresistible string of victories as they picked up 18 points on a possible 24 during the first twelve games of the season. But the team's performances declined dramatically since that point.Yesterday's match between the New York Islanders and the Montreal Canadiens was a good indicator of how the Canadiens are playing these last weeks. With a two goals lead under five minutes to play, defense men Ryan O'Byrne committed a huge mistak...

Celebrating the Saint Patrick in November.
2008-11-22 06:11:00
Tonight at the Bell centre, the legendary Number 33 worn by Patrick Roy will be raised to the ceiling of the arena. The glorious debuts in the NHL in 1986, the two Stanley Cups won with the organization and the dramatic events that ended his association with the Montreal Canadiens. The life and times of one of the very best goaltenders of all time will be remembered.Patrick Roy's legacy as a member of the Montreal Canadiens can be described as being the ultimate competitor. He hated the taste of a loss and wanted to win each and every game he took part of during his career. A leader in the room, a fierce competitor and a dependable ally.In honor of his contribution to the team and his fans, in honor of the last two championships of the franchise, a banner with his name and his number will be raised to the ceiling. Rpy will be celebrated despite the chaotic end of his association with the Canadiens this Saturday December 2nd 1995 when his head coach at the moment, Mario Tremblay, lef...

The official end of an era.
2008-11-16 17:38:00
It became official today. The mission to save the Canadian Grand Prix failed. Gerald Tremblay, mayor of Montreal and Raymond Bachand, minister in the province's government met Bernie Ecclestone in England a few weeks ago in a last valiant effort to save Canada's Grand Prix. With Bernie Ecclestone's demands, no private corporation or individual was able to run the event with a profitable outcome. Even the provincial and municipal governments didn't see their profits at the end of the operation at Bernie's demand.Bernie's circus will go elsewhere from 2009 on. Both parties did not agree and the event is not on the 2009 calendar. It is a big loss for the city of Montreal and for North America. Next season, the Formula One will not race on North American soil. Despite the popularity of Montreal's race among racing fans, crew members and drivers, the last page have been turned on that great era.Gilles Villeneuve won the first Canadian Grand Prix held on the famous circuit named aft...

Got Higgins?
2008-11-13 16:42:00
Tuesday evening, Christopher Higgins registered three goals, good for a first hat trick in his career. The Montreal Canadiens blanked the Ottawa Senators by the score of 4-0.The winger did not play in the early stages of the season because of a minor injury. But now he seems like he's going at 100%.I picked him in my fantasy league last year and his production deceived me. But if it happens that he is on your fantasy roster for this current season, consider playing him more often now. Higgins' contract expires after this season and his best chance of getting a new and lucrative contract is to have good stats at the end of the year.Higgins looked very alert against Ottawa and is definitly heating up. His complicity with Saku Koivu looks intact. The duo is lined up with Alex Tanguay who is also having a great start this year.(Picture: Christopher Higgins.)
30$? Sweet!
2008-11-11 16:22:00
I have not played online poker a lot in 2007 and even this year. The reason is simple: I either did not have the time or the freerolls were not interesting enough for me.That was before the Pokerstars Summer games '08 tournament that took place in Spetember and October. I have participated to the event and qualified for the 5$ prize a total of five times out of the eight events proposed. This was a good way to build my bankroll from scratch.Once the competition was over, I started playing some ring games on Pokerstars.com and won my fair share of money. Now my bankroll is big enough for me to start withdrawing some money out of my account. So last week I took 30$ out of there and I received the money a couple of days later.I know, 30$ is not much but it's a start. If I add up all my online poker winnings over the last 3 years, the amount I have withdrawn is a bit more interesting. So, how much have I earned playing poker online thus far? Let me check my notes here...Hmmm, accordin...

Montreal get a point despite Halak's play.
2008-11-08 05:06:00
The Montreal Canadiens can say that they at least sent their game with the Columbus Blue Jackets to overtime. Sergei Kostitsyn caught a great feed from his brother Andrei with 32 seconds left in the third period to tie the matchup at 3 all.Canadiens' goaltender, Jaroslav Halak, had a very difficult night. He gave way too many rebounds and looked handcuffed on every shot coming towards him. Halak gave a goal early to R.J. Umberger who is still red hot against the Canadiens. Alex Tanguay tied the game up at 1 when he pounced on a loose puck standing at the goal mouth.Later on into the game, a quick two goal strike from the Jackets almost resulted in a win during regulation. Marc Methot and Frederik Modin pushed Columbus ahead by a goal before the Kostitsyn brothers connected to allow Montreal to fly away with one point. The shootout session was short and sweet, the first two Jackets to go at Jaroslav Halak scored. Derek Brassard ended the game when he undressed the young goaltender wi...

Brazilian Grand Prix: Suspense held racing fans on the edge of their seats
2008-11-02 20:04:00
The final race of this exciting 2008 Formula One season was held today at Interlagos, Brazil and the drivers championship was still in the balance between Felipe Massa of Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren. For Lewis Hamilton, a fifth place was good enough to be declared world champion. For Felipe Massa, a victory combined with a 6th or worse finish for the British driver was needed. Massa who started from the pole position completed his part of the task as he led this race from start to finish. The race started under rainy conditions, shifted to dry conditions and finished once again under rainy conditions for the last six laps of the race. The final portion of the race gave the racing fans something to remember. As Massa crossed the finish line, his rival had given up the fifth place to Sebastian Vettel and was in sixth place, desperatly driving to gain back his fifth position. With a couple of laps to go, all eyes were on Lewis Hamilton who was struggling, holding on to the fifth...

Big comeback at Uniondale.
2008-11-02 02:54:00
The Montreal Canadiens were nowhere to be found during the first and second period tonight. Their lack of intensity was so obvious that the pitiful New York Islanders were leading by the score of 4-1 after two periods. But the Habs decided to show up in the third period and came back from this three goals deficit. The Habs scored a total of four goals into the last frame. First, Tomas Plekanec woke up his team mates with two goals early into the third period. Those two goals were followed by the first goal of the season for Chris Higgins and the game-winner was netted by Alex Kovalev with five minutes to play. The line composed of Alex Kovalev, Tomas Plekanec and Andrei Kostitsyn was a game saver for the Habs. Kovalev and Plekanec each netted two during this game.Montreal's head coach Guy Carbonneau was happy to steal two points from the Islanders but was not very pleased by the way his team showed up for the first two periods. Carbonneau knew that his team had the offensive firepowe...

Controversial finish at the Bell centre.
2008-10-26 16:04:00
During the wee hours on Friday, Lucian Bute was defending his IBF super-middleweight title against Librado Andrade. The fight was entertaining, intense and ended with a controversial 12th round. For the record, Lucian Bute retained his IBF title by unanimous decision. But should this last round lasted another thirty seconds, Librado Andrade would've walked out of Montreal the IBF super-middleweight champion with a 12th round KO victory. After the 11th round, Lucian Bute was clearly ahead on the judges' score cards. He managed his fight brillantly using his speed and technique to his advantage. With such a good lead going into the final round, Bute decided to give a little more show to the screaming fans gathered at the Bell centre. This mistake almost costed Lucian Bute his IBF title. Librado Andrade continued his charges while going forward and caught the champion with a bundle of shots. The champion was reeling, barely hanging on. Then with only a few seconds to go to the final rou...

2008-10-23 15:43:00
The Montreal Impact's participation in the CONCACAF Champions League is becoming a great adventure for the club.Tuesday evening at the Saputo stadium, Montreal qualified themselves for the quarterfinals with a 1-1 tie versus the CD Olympia. Roberto Brown scored once again for Montreal to insure the club's place into the next round. With a record of 3-0-2, Montreal is still in first place of Group C. Atlante FC is the other club of the group qualified for the quarterfinals. Both teams will play each other on October 28 to decide of who will finish on top of the group. The quarterfinals are to be played in February of 2009 and the club is working with the city of Montreal to present the most important match of the club history at the Olympic stadium.(Picture: Roberto Brown.)
Fifth victory in a row for the Canadiens.
2008-10-21 03:51:00
Tonight at the Bell centre, the Montreal Canadiens hosted the only NHL team holding a winning record against the Habs in franchise history: the Florida Panthers. As strange as it sounds, the Panthers had a 25-22-2 record versus the Canadiens before the start of the match. They represent the only team with a winning record over the Montreal Canadiens in franchise history.During the first period, both goaltenders kept the game scoreless. Both goaltenders, Tomas Vokoun and Jaroslav Halak did pretty good in front of their respective nets. Then into the second period, a great pass from Andrei Markov to Saku Koivu allowed Montreal to take the lead. Koivu's goal was his 600th point as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. Jaroslav Halak faced some quality shots during the second half of the period but did not allow the Panthers to tie the game up.But during the third period, the Panthers finally beat Halak on a rebound. Keith Ballard with his very first goal of the season tied the game at 1.B...

China Grand Prix: Hamilton dominates and leads by 7.
2008-10-19 15:59:00
Starting from the pole at the Chinese Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton did not commit any major mistake and led the race in it's entirety. This is the fifth victory of the season for the McLaren driver. Felipe Massa in his Ferrari finished in second place and stayed in the hunt for the last event of the season. Kimi Raikkonen completed the podium. Now with only a single event to go in this 2008 season, Hamilton's lead over Felipe Massa has increased to seven points. For Felipe Massa, a victory in Brazil combined with a 6th place or worse for Lewis Hamilton is the only way he can still win the drivers championship. The championship is for Hamilton to lose.Fernando Alonso continued his great end of season with his 4th place. We can expect great things from Renault during the next season. The car is more and more competitive as this 2008 season unfolded and could be a serious contender come next season. Will we crown Lewis Hamilton in Brazil? Or will we re-live the spectacular ending of 2007?...

Rough Saturday evening for Andrei Kostitsyn.
2008-10-19 03:22:00
The Montreal Canadiens played the Phoenix Coyotes at the Bell centre tonight. As far as the final score is concerned, the Canadiens disposed easily of the Coyotes by the score of 4-1.But the match itself was a tough encounter. Many times, we saw some pushing after the whistles and the fans witnessed a few brawls, especially during the second period. The incident that initiated the rough stuff came during that second frame when Kurt Sauer used one of his elbow to pin Andrei Kostitsyn hard into the boards. The forward stayed on the ice for a long period of time before being escorted outside the rink.Tom Kostopoulos and Georges Laraque came to Kostitsyn's defense and fought with Kurt Sauer and Todd Fedoruk during that long second period. Andrei Kostitsyn never came back to the ice, his physical condition will be evaluated this weekend. As for the scoring in this game, Montreal scored twice during the first period. Alex Tanguay and Saku Koivu continued on their great early season moment...

Blackhawks fire Denis Savard.
2008-10-17 15:33:00
After only four games into this new season, the Chicago Blackhawks have fired their head coach and ex-superstar, Denis Savard. At the head of the Hawks, Denis Savard kept a record of 65 wins, 66 losses and 16 losses during extra time. The Hawks announced that they replaced Savard by Joel Quenneville but the real question to ask is: Why wait after only four games into the season? If the team planned to replace Denis Savard, why did they wait after the training camp and after four games into the season to make their move? The team would've been better off with their change during the off-season. Now, the new coach is thrown in without any work and preparation. The training camp is designed to put in place a strategy and for the coaches to install their system. So why not fire Savard during the off-season to give a running chance to their new head coach? Then there is the other side of the story. Why let Denis Savard work thru the training camp if they intended to fire him? The managing ...

The Montreal Canadiens ended their three-game road trip in Philadelphia as they faced the Flyers. Many players wanted to avenge last season' elimination at the hands of the broad street bullies. After a tough first and second period, the Flyers were ahead by 2 to 1. Jeff Carter and Mike Richards scored two quick goals to take the early lead into the contest. But the Canadiens lit the lamp four times in the third period to finally win the contest. Roman Hamrlik and Mike Komisarek scored two goals in a 44 seconds span to definatly put the Canadiens ahead. Robert Lang added a goal for Montreal who was leading by 4 to 2 past the halfway mark into the third period.Simon Gagné made the game interesting with a goal for the Flyers but it was too late. Japan Grand Prix: Alonso wins a second race in a row.
2008-10-12 16:11:00
After winning his first race of the season in Singapore, Fernando Alonso repeated and finished in first place of the Japan Grand Prix.Besides the fact that Renault has shown that they are back to the front of the pack after a difficult start of season, all eyes were on the battle for the drivers championship between Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa.Hamilton sabotaged his race at the very first corner. Once the red lights extinguished, the McLaren driver pointed the nose of his car inside of the Ferrari driven by Kimi Raikkonen and locked his wheels, forcing Raikkonen to roll outside of the track. This loss of control from Hamilton forced the race officials to penalize him sending Hamilton way back. The British driver will finish the race out of the points in 12th place. As for Felipe Massa, he collided with Lewis Hamilton a few corners after the start and was also forced to the back of the pack. Massa will end up in 8th place and will only gather a single point. The race for the driver...

Habs schools the Leafs.
2008-10-12 03:36:00
Only 24 hours after their deceiving performance in Buffalo, the Montreal Canadiens were the guests of the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada centre. Tonight's game was the home opener for the Leafs a few days after their brilliant victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions.Jaroslav Halak was in net for Montreal and he had to keep Toronto off the score sheet after only a few minutes. The solid play from the Habs goaltender gave confidence to Montreal. Once the early Toronto storm has passed, the Canadiens opened the flood gates on the Leafs. The Habs scored twice during the first period with goals from Roman Hamrlik and Alex Kovalev. Montreal added four goals during the second frame. Sergei Kostitsyn scored twice, Guillaume Latendresse added one goal while Alex Tanguay scored his first one as a member of the Canadiens.Montreal's power play was clicking as they converted on the man advantage a total of three times during the evening. Montreal and Buffalo opens their season in a total boredom.
2008-10-11 03:56:00
The Montreal Canadiens opened their 2008-2009 season tonight at the HSBC centre in Buffalo . After waiting for months since the last hockey game played in June, hockey is finally back.Tonight's match between the Habs and the Sabres lacked rhythm all evening long. There was a few moments here and there but in general, the excitement of the new season wasn't there.I really pity those who bought season tickets for this 2008-2009 Buffalo Sabres season. The team will be a total bore this year and we had a very good sample of it tonight. On the other hand, there was one good news for the Buffalo Sabres tonight: they managed to drag down the Montreal Canadiens to their level of play. The scoring for tonight is very easy to elaborate. First, the newest member of the Canadiens, Robert Lang, opened the score during the first period with the first goal of the season for Montreal. Lang recuperated a loose puck in front of goaltender Ryan Miller and sent it over the goalie.Tomas Vanek tied the g...

Montreal loses the Formula One Grand Prix.
2008-10-09 16:59:00
As we were remembering and celebrating the first Formula One victory of Gilles Villeneuve thirty years ago this week, a bombshell hitted the organization led by Normand Legault.Bernie Ecclestone unveiled a version of the 2009 calendar this week and the Canadian Grand Prix is not on the list. The 2009 calendar was supposed to contain a total of 19 races but is now only showing 18. The Canadian Grand Prix is nowhere to be found on the list.In reaction to this fact yesterday, Normand Legault, the only remaining private Formula One race promoter, announced that he and his company (Grand Prix du Canada) are retiring themselves and will not negotiate for any future Formula One Grand Prix to be held in Montreal . The amount of money asked by Bernie Ecclestone to run again in Montreal is too much for Legault and his company. In a word, the Canadian Grand Prix is officially dead. The only way that another Formula One race could be held on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit is through a negotiation ...
Ready for an historic season.
2008-10-07 15:42:00
This weekend, the Montreal Canadiens will begin the 100th season of their rich history. A hundred years that will be celebrated all year long. The club has prepared a couple of celebrations and fans will have the chance to join in all year long. The club is without any contest NHL's most recognized hockey club on the planet. The 24 Stanley Cups won in it's history and the many legendary players that worn the uniform will be celebrated in this 100th season.A first occasion to remember the glorious past of the organization will take place on November 22nd when the Canadiens will retire Patrick Roy's number 33. The legendary goaltender will see his number retired and raised to the roof of the Bell centre before a match with the Boston Bruins.Montreal will also host the All-Star game and the 2009 NHL entry draft. Jeff Hardy's indiscipline.
2008-10-03 16:00:00
As we are now only a couple of days away from ''No Mercy'', I have read that just a couple of weeks ago, WWE superstar Jeff Hardy was removed from a plane by police officers because he was too drunk to board.Hardy is a part of the main event this weekend as he has a shot at the WWE Championship held by the great Triple H. This kind of bad publicity could jeopardize an eventual reign atop of the WWE. The championship belts are usually awarded to wrestlers who contribute the most to the success of the company. In this last month's incident, Jeff Hardy was boarding on a plane in Nashville with his brother Matt who is incidently the current ECW champion. A Southwest Airlines employee called the police when he or she felt that the wrestling star was intoxicated. Jeff Hardy was not arrested nor handcuffed but was clearly ''escorted'' by officers. This is not the first incident involving Jeff Hardy this year. Just a few months ago in march of this year, Hardy was suspended for 60 da...
The Montreal Impact strikes again.
2008-10-02 16:05:00
For their third group phase match of the CONCACAF Champions League yesterday, the Montreal Impact were visiting the CD Olympia in Honduras. After a quick goal from the head of Roberto Brown during the second minute of the match, the local team started to pick up the pace. A well played free kick allowed the CD Olympia to tie up the score at 1.Then late into the second half, a penalty was awarded to Montreal at the 79th minute. Roberto Brown converted this glorious chance and gave Montreal a 2-1 lead. A lead that the team did not waste. With this victory, the Montreal Impact improoves their record to 2-0-1 (+3) and occupy the first place of Group C. The FC Atlante can tie up Montreal's record with a win over Joe Public FC.The next group phase match for Montreal will take place on October 8th in Trinidad & Tobago.(Picture: Roberto Brown, Canadian Press.)
Singapore Grand Prix: Ferrari hosed down.
2008-09-28 15:34:00
Two separate incidents changed the face of the Singapore Grand Prix today. Fernando Alonso who took the start from the 15th position was on a single stop strategy and the combination of the incidents and his strategy paid off for him.Nelson Piquet Jr sent his Renault into a wall in the early stages of the race which forced the race officials to send the pace car. While the rest of the pack was still forming, Nico Rosberg and Robert Kubica were forced to stop to get fuel while the pit lane was still closed. Both pilots were penalized with a stop and go.From the pole position, Felipe Massa was still leading when came the time to enter the pits. A major mistake from Ferrari sent Massa away while the fuel hose was still attached to the car. Massa ripped the hose from the tank and dragged it into the pit lane. The crew members were forced to run the entire lenght of the pit lane to get the hose off Massa's car. A major mistake that will impact his drivers championship race with Lewis Ha...

Singapore Grand Prix: Historic and spectacular.
2008-09-27 17:05:00
Bernie Ecclestone isn't one of my all-time favorite person. The way he rules his Formula One circus can be debated on many fronts. But I have to admit today after watching the qualifying session that his daring idea of running a race under the spotlights during the night will be a total success once the weekend is over. The images coming from Singapore are simply spectacular and memorable. The lighting for the pilots is safe and adequate and is giving the fans something to cheer about. The city's infrastructure around the circuit is giving us some great pictures. The stands all around the circuit were filled to capacity for this qualifying session and a record television attendance is expected. The success of the event is undeniable. The experience will be repeated for next season. As for the qualifying session itself, Felipe Massa was once again the fastest of the group. His Ferrari was just over a half a second faster than Lewis Hamilton's McLaren. Hamilton almost missed Q3 when he...

The second match of the group phase of the CONCACAF Champions League for the Montreal Impact was presented at the Saputo stadium yesterday. The FC Atlante from Mexico were the visitors. The weather was surprizingly warm for this time of the year and the stadium was almost to it's capacity as 12 187 fans were gathered for this match. After a slow start, the Montreal Impact took control of the match and had a few glorious chances to score. FC Atlante's goaltender, Federico Villar, kept his team in the game on a few occasions with spectacular saves to keep the game scoreless. When the final whistle blew, the score was still tied at 0-0 and both teams gathered a point in the standings. Both teams are tied in first place of Group C and both teams have a record of a win and a tie after two games. The next match for the Montreal Impact in this Champions League will take place Honduras as the CD Olimpio will host the Montreal squad.(Picture: The Montreal Impact.)
