Moderate risk of severe storms for Mid-Atlantic
2008-06-04 17:00:00
The Mid-Atlantic region has been placed under a moderate risk zone for severe thunderstorms and possible tornados, according to the Storm Prediction Center. A widespread outbreak of storms with potentially damaging winds is expected for the late afternoon and early evening this Wednesday. Today's expected storm outbreak would be the second one in as many days. An outbreak of storms with heavy rains broke out late Tuesday evening across the Washington, D.C. area especially towards the southern suburbs. A waterspout was also reported near Indian Head, Maryland. The earlier issued Flash Flood Watch has been cancelled.----Relevant link: Storm Prediction Center, Capital Weather Gang

Barack Obama clinches Democratic presidential nomination
2008-06-04 03:33:00
Barack Obama has clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, accumulating enough delegate pledges to gain majority support at the Democratic National Convention. CBS News reports that despite losing the state as a whole, Obama won enough delegates in the South Dakota primary combined with pledged superdelegate support to put him over the top. The nomination victory was well-earned by Barack Obama, it is a great and remarkable achievement that can never be taken away from him. My disclaimer having been written, the deficits in Obama's support have become apparent and obvious over the past several months. Weaknesses among white working-class voters, Hispanics and women remain that stand to be exploited by John McCain in the general election campaign. With or without the support of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama will have his work cut out for him in reunifying the party. That work will need to be done though post-haste for Obama to maintain any serious hopes of becoming the next pr...

Bernadette McGlade named Atlantic 10 commissioner
2008-06-03 17:55:00
Former ACC associate commissioner Bernadette McGlade has been named commissioner of the Atlantic 10 conference. McGlade's background in women's basketball should help in promoting women's programs like the D.C. area's George Washington as well as rivals Temple and St. Joseph's.More important for the Atlantic 10 fandom though may be McGlade's working knowledge of the sports television industry. The conference is still laboring under a restrictive deal signed with the former CSTV. The arrangement has blocked most local broadcasts of A-10 games on systems that don't carry CSTV (now known as CBS College Sports), a large majority of the northeastern and mid-Atlantic United States. ----Specifically to the D.C. area, the poor television contract has blocked George Washington Colonials from negotiating significant regional carriage deals with Comcast SportsNet (Mid-Atlantic) or with MASN, allowing Maryland, Georgetown and George Mason to dominate local coverage unchallenged. The new A...

Jim Gilmore wins Virginia Republican nomination for Senate
2008-06-03 17:29:00
Jim Gilmore won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate from Virginia , taking the nod with only 50.3% of his party's delegate vote over state delegate Bob Marshall. Gilmore likely actually had a minority of the delegates at the weekend party convention but a weighting process for vote counts allowed him to eek out the win.The former governor had helped engineer a convention process for the nomination vote, essentially forcing the moderate Rep. Tom Davis out of the race before he could get into it. The path to a party coronation went awry though as instead of Davis taking on Gilmore from the center, Gilmore was severely hurt by a Marshall challenge from the far right. The end result is the best of all worlds from likely Democratic challenger Mark Warner. A former governor himself, Warner left office with far greater popularity than his Republican counterpart and will enter this race with vastly superior financial resources and a more unified party apparatus. The operative question m...

Washington Glory open pro softball season title defense
2008-05-29 20:20:00
The Washington Glory women's professional softball team opens play tonight (Thursday) for the second year of its brief existence at home against the New England Riptide. Last year's Glory squad dominated the six-team National Pro Fastpitch en route to the league's championship, a virtually unprecedented feat for an expansion team in any league. Our local softballers title defense will be led in large measure by infielder & reigning MVP Amber Jackson, profiled by WJLA/7 earlier this week, and pitchers Desiree Serrano & Sarah Pauly, the returning aces of a pitching dominant squad. ----Two Glory players will be out on hiatus for the year due to service with the Team USA Olympians, pitcher Monica Abbott and outfielder Kelly Kretschman. The Glory's top collegiate draft pick, Arizona pitcher Taryne Mowatt, will also not be available yet while she continues play in the Women's College World Series. Aside from the notable player absences, Glory fans will also deal with a home stadium ad...

Snyder / Red Zebra near purchase of WTEM, WTNT, WWRC
2008-05-28 22:48:00
Red Zebra/Redskins Radio owner Dan Snyder is within a week of announcing the purchase of Clear Channel-owned sports station WTEM/980 and sister stations WTNT/570 & WWRC/1260, according to a report on DCRTV. Should it happen, the purchase would give Dan Snyder an area sports radio monopoly and control of most local play-by-play game broadcasts. The impending monopolization of D.C. sports radio is an appalling prospect for fans of multiple sports teams. In any Redskins sports radio megalith, what little time exists for discussions of operations like the Nationals & Wizards would be further marginalized in favor of more Redskins talk and not so unbiased talk at that.----Additionally, with WMAL unwilling to air sports play-by-play and WJFK aligned exclusively with the Maryland Terrapins, only Red Zebra and Bonneville owned stations could be left as viable access options for game broadcasts of local college and pro sports franchises. As is, minor league baseball and Washington Mystics br...

Jim Webb co-favorite for Democratic vice-presidential bid
2008-05-28 15:46:00
U.S. Senator Jim Webb from Virginia has moved up at one offshore gambling site to become a co-favorite with Sen. Hillary Clinton for the Democratic vice-presidential nomination. As of midday May 28, the Ladbrokes sports book has Clinton and Webb each with 4-1 odds of becoming the vice-presidential nominee, likely on a ticket with Sen. Barack Obama. Webb has broken through as the top non-Clinton possibility based on his military experience, longtime opposition to the Iraq War and effective work thus far in the U.S. Senate including his shepherding of the new G.I. Bill.----Relevant link: Ladbrokes

Ex-cop Keith Washington sentenced in Accokeek shootings
2008-05-28 15:21:00
Former Prince George's County police officer Keith Washington was sentenced to the maximum 45 years in prison for the shootings of two deliverymen at his Accokeek, Maryland home. One of the Marlo-employed movers, Brandon Clark, died from his injuries. Washington had been convicted of multiple charges including involunatry manslaughter for the attack which he claimed had been self-densnse.Keith Washington's wife maintained at sentencing that Washington was a hero for protecting his home and family, a statement that comes off as sadly incomplete. Somewhere along the line, Washington sadly forgot that part of his job as a police officer was to protect innocent people in the community at large. The movers did nothing to deserve such retribution.Aside from being a profound tragedy, the shootings also proved a political embarrassment as Washington had been the homeland security deputy director for the county, a job secured based on personal ties to County Executive Jack Johnson.----Rele...

D.C. Council to consider Poplar Point soccer stadium bill
2008-05-28 04:02:00
The D.C. Council will consider and vote on a bill next Tuesday, June 3 to authorize a soccer stadium at the Poplar Point development in Anacostia, according to a report from WUSA/9's Bruce Johnson. Should it be approved, a new soccer stadium would serve as the home field for D.C. United and likely for the women's Washington Freedom squad.WUSA/9 reports that D.C. United owner Victor MacFarlane would pay for the construction costs of the stadium. The Washington Post later reported that the city would pay $150 million in costs with D.C. United responsible for the excess. Whether the Post writer meant that the city would pay for stadium or infrastructure costs is unclear.D.C. Councilman Marion Barry seems to be a driving force behind the council's effort. WUSA/9 claims that Council Chairman Vincent Gray, Councilman Jack Evans and Yvette Alexander are also on board as bill sponsors. The reported bill comes after weeks of hints from both DCU and the city government of some kind of arra...

Mid-Atlantic blogs for Democratic convention profiled
2008-05-27 17:11:00
In a followup to today's earlier note, the credentialed state blogs named last week to the Democratic National Convention for the local Mid-Atlantic region are DCist for the District of Columbia, Raising Kaine for Virginia and The Center for Emerging Media in Maryland.I thought it would be a fun task to see just what kind of audiences these blogs reach, according to rough estimates from the Quantcast service.----First for DCist:This site reaches over 130K monthly uniques, of which 120K (92%) are in the U.S. The site caters to a more educated, fairly wealthy crowd. The typical visitor reads Earth Times. So far, so good. Note that the blog also skews heavily towards the Washington, D.C. television market as one would expect. Extra kudos to DCist to signing up for the Quantcast service to get a truer demo reading. The only problem is that a lot of the content is non-political.----For Raising Kaine:This site reaches approximately 5,057 U.S. monthly uniques. The site attracts a more educa...

Race controversy in Democrats' blog credentialing
2008-05-27 16:47:00
A racial controversy has erupted over the credentialing of state blogs for the Democratic National Convention notes the Washington Post. The State Blog ger Corps blogs, named by the DNC based for propagating a Democratic perspective on state & local issues to their audiences, also turn out to be written by overwhelmingly white bloggers. Needless to say, this has left the growing chorus of African-American and other minority Democratic bloggers feeling aggrieved. The principal problem for the DNC as far as can be told is simply that the first wave of major political bloggers turned out to be predominately higher income white males. The newer bloggers who have come along have been at a disadvantage to catch up in terms of audience reach. What should be more important than the diversity of the bloggers though is ultimately the diversity of their respective audiences. If it's only white males writing to white males, that's a serious problem. If it's Democrats across the demographic spe...
