U.S. Olympic softball team defeats Washington Glory, 2-0
2008-05-11 00:58:00 The United States Olympic softball team scored a 2-0 victory over the defending pro softball champion Washington Glory in Bowie, Maryland. Team USA, as the women's national team is often called, has only been defeated once as part of its "Bound 4 Beijing" promotional tour throughout the country.Saturday's contest from a sold-out Prince George's Stadium was a pitchers' duel through 5.5 innings between Sarah Pauly of the officially visiting Glory and a combination of Monica Abbott, Cat Osterman & Jennie Finch for Team USA. Ironically, Monica Abbott and outfielder Kelly Kretschman are on leave from the Glory to serve as Olympic team members. The scoreless tie was broken up in the bottom of the 6th inning off Glory relief pitcher Amy Harre, a pitcher normally assigned to the Philadelphia Force notes the Washington Post. An error by shortstop Amber Jackson allowed the USA's Lauren Lappin to reach first base. She was eventually hit in from second base off a single from Natasha Whatley... More About: Softball
Wilson Bridge Project rain delay backs up Beltway traffic
2008-05-11 00:01:00 An eight hour rain delay of planned work for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project forced the closure of most Outer Loop lanes approaching the bridge throughout Saturday. Vehicles were reduced to one lane on the Virginia side of the Potomac. The obvious result was backed up Outer Loop traffic this Saturday for miles. As part of the final work for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project, workers are realigning the Outer Loop approach to the bridge. Some on-ramps to the Beltway are also closed for the weekend work. When this weekend's effort is completed, traffic will approach the Wilson Bridge on new lanes about 60 meters south of the previous ones. The alignment will make more sense when the new Outer Loop span of the bridge itself is eventually opened.----Relevant links: WTOP/103.5, AlexandriaNews More About: Traffic , Rain
Tornadoes confirmed in Stafford, Prince George's counties
2008-05-10 18:17:00 The National Weather Service confirmed that two tornadoes hit the Washington, D.C. area late Thursday night/early Friday morning. An EF-2 intensity tornado with 120 mph winds hit the England Run subdivision in Stafford County, Virginia just before 11 p.m. Thursday, May 8. An EF-0, the minimum possible type of tornado, hit Camp Springs, Maryland in Prince George's County with 80 mph winds about 1 a.m. the next day.The impact was far more extensive from the Stafford tornado with at least 140 homes having sustained significant damage, reports the Washington Post. Two minor injuries were reported from the Stafford event. More scattered tree and wind damage occurred in Camp Springs, Suitland and Fort Washington, Maryland. Outside of the tornado zone, flooding was the worst concern. The most memorable television image of flooding was the red-colored car stuck in high water on the ramp from Berry Road to Indian High Highway in Accokeek. Flooding may prove a concern again with another stro... More About: Tornadoes

U.S. Olympic softball game vs. Glory sold out
2008-05-08 14:08:00 This weekend's exhibition softball game between the United States Olympic team and the defending pro champion Washington Glory squad has already sold out. All approximately 7,500 tickets have been sold at the scaled down Prince George's Stadium for Saturday afternoon's contest, reports the Gazette.Team USA, as the Olympian squad has been dubbed, has traveled across the country facing mostly college squads in a "Bound 4 Beijing" promotional and preparation effort for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The professional Washington Glory squad stands as Team USA's potentially toughest pre-Olympics opponent. This year's Olympic Game s could mark the USA Softball program's last chance for its own glory though, no pun intended. Softball was dropped as an Olympic sport from the 2012 London event. Five Mystics games to air on Comcast SportsNet
2008-05-07 21:25:00 Five games of the Washington Mystics' new women's pro basketball season will air on Comcast SportsNet. CSN will televise matchups against the Indiana Fever, Detroit Shock, Seattle Storm, New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun, all but the Liberty game to also air in HD. The local Mystics telecasts will all air in July 2008 as part of what Comcast SportsNet calls "Mystics Month." Whether the Mystics are only worthy of a month is debatable but considering that the team didn't get any locally produced television at all last season, it still stands as an improvement. Additionally, four games will air on national television via the ESPN family of channels.UPDATE: On the other hand, the Mystics have reupdated their radio schedule to remove references to WWRC/1260. It now seems that Mystics games will not air on local radio at all this season. ----Relevant link: Washington Mystics More About: Games , Sportsnet
Northern Virginia earthquake upgraded in intensity
2008-05-07 20:50:00 Suspicions that Tuesday's Northern Virginia earthquake was stronger than first measured have proven valid. A revised report from the U.S. Geological Survey placed the magnitude of the May 6 early afternoon quake as a 2.0, up from the originally reported 1.8. The epicenter was also rereported as being closer to North Springfield, Virginia, not Annandale as earlier stated.Witnesses to the 1:30 p.m. event heard a sonic-style boom followed by a ground rumbling. Regardless of the numbers though, the quake only rattled the nerves of Northern Virginians without causing any damage or injuries. ----Relevant links: WUSA/9, U.S. Geological Survey More About: Earthquake
Mark Warner launches Virginia campaign for U.S. Senate
2008-05-07 16:35:00 Former Virginia governor Mark Warner (D) officially launched his campaign this week Monday for the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring incumbent John Warner (R), pledging to run outside normal partisan divides during a statewide tour that's taking him across eleven stops through Wednesday. Warner had already announced his intention to run for the seat months ago, his residual popularity as a more moderate-style Democrat from his term as governor makes him the strong favorite to claim the seat over the eventual Republican nominee.Warner's Web site and the Web sites of countless other Senate and House candidates from Virginia, Maryland and the D.C. area in general are linked on the left sidebar of this blog's main page.----Relevant links: Mark Warner for Senate 2008, Washington Post More About: Campaign
A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for John McCain
2008-05-07 14:57:00 The Democratic presidential nomination fight has essentially narrowed down to my provocative subject premise. It has become readily apparent after the North Carolina and Indiana primaries to all but the most stubborn that Barack Obama will be the Democratic presidential nominee. The only question now is how long Hillary Clinton is willing to damage the Democratic Party's general election prospects by scorching Obama in a hopeless primary fight.Let me be very clear about this. Every advertisement that Hillary Clinton runs will only benefit John McCain. Every campaign donation that Hillary Clinton receives will only benefit John McCain. Every vote, every single vote that Hillary Clinton solicits for to prop up her delusions of possibility will only benefit John McCain. Barack Obama will be the Democratic standard-bearer, it's time for the party as a whole including Hillary Clinton to recognize that fact and rally behind him. More About: Vote
Minor earthquake in Northern Virginia
2008-05-06 21:32:00 A minor earthquake, registered at a microscopically low 1.8, rocked the Northern Virginia area at about 1:30 p.m. this Tuesday afternoon. The epicenter was located near Annandale, Virginia in Fairfax County according to the U.S. Geological Survey. To date, no reports of damage or injuries have come out nor should they be expected, truth be known. The quake was originally confused with planned blasting, set for later Tuesday, associated with the expansion of the Fort Belvoir military base. Some residents reported hearing a loud boom followed by rumbling (or vice versa), which would have seemed like more than the 1.8 scale event actually recorded. UPDATE: Earthquake upgraded in intensity, see newest post.----Relevant links: WJLA/7, WTOP/103.5, Washington Post More About: Minor
Blue Crabs make successful inaugural home debut
2008-05-05 22:19:00 The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs minor league baseball team made a successful debut both on the field and in the stands Friday night. An overflow crowd of 7,180 greeted the region's first professional sports franchise for its opening home outing at the new Regency Furniture Stadium in the Waldorf / St. Charles area of Charles County. Lawn seating allowed for Friday attendance to skyrocket above the official stadium capacity of 4,200.The sellout crowd got what it wanted Friday in a 3-2 come from behind Blue Crabs win over the Lancaster Barnstormers off an eighth-inning Clint Johnston single that scored Eric Crozier. The Blue Crabs claimed successive 8-7 wins the following two games, the Saturday night game a 13 inning affair, to sweep the series and climb above .500 at 5 wins, 4 losses for the season. My only concern is that the initial attendance surge of Friday didn't take all that well as Sunday's 3,187 mark was already below that of games hosted by the Potomac Nationals & Bowie... Washington Wizards eliminated with game six loss to Cavaliers
2008-05-03 13:52:00 The Washington Wizards were eliminated from the NBA playoffs with a stunningly lopsided game six loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers , 105-88, to fall in the best of seven conference quarterfinal series four games to two. LeBron James scored 27 points with 13 rebounds & 13 assists to help annihilate the shorthanded Wizards' squad. While James should be fully credited for his work as a superstar athlete, the King James title seems to have become a little too literal. The league machinations that (intentionally or otherwise) assured maximum advantage for James and the Cavaliers in this series were more reminiscent of World Wrestling Entertainment than a legitimate sports organization. What is left for the Washington Wizards is an offseason in which team management will have to decide whether it's worth the money to keep their own more mercurial and oft-injured superstar, Gilbert Arenas. Whether he's kept or not, some kind of chemistry shakeup will be needed if the Wizards are ever to adv... More About: Game , Loss
After game five upset, Wizards return for game six vs. Cavs
2008-05-02 21:10:00 The Washington Wizards were all primed to be taken out of the NBA playoffs Wednesday night, reeling under a three games to one series deficit vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers and the late hour loss of star player Gilbert Arenas. Instead, the Wizards regained the form they had displayed months earlier without Arenas. Caron Butler scored 32 points including the game-winning basket in the 88-87 game five road upset. While game five's win may have been a feel-good moment, the task facing the Wizards this Friday night may be no less daunting. Game six is the second absolute must win contest for the team, an outing the Wizards must face without reserve forward Darius Songaila, controversially suspended a game for allegedly hitting superstar Cleveland player LeBron James in the face with his hand. For the Washington Wizards, the loss of Songaila will be just one more obstacle to overcome. Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to open new Waldorf home
2008-05-02 20:09:00 The long-awaited debut of minor league baseball in Southern Maryland will take place this Friday night as the expansion Southern Maryland Blue Crabs open their home schedule. The home team debut against the Lancaster Barnstormers also marks the debut of Regency Furniture Stadium, a 4200 seat facility with surrounding lawn seating in the St. Charles development near Waldorf. Charles County hopes the baseball team and its new stadium will be the catalyst for economic development in the Waldorf-St. Charles area. Residents of the more centrally located Southern Maryland community of Hughesville didn't want such development and rejected the initial plan for the stadium. Most of the promotional effort to date has been built around Orioles great turned Blue Crabs co-owner Brooks Robinson.----What fans will make of the team itself is an understandably struggling expansion squad, a consensus pick to finish last in the independent Atlantic League as most players were acquired off stints in l... "D.C. Madam" Deborah Jeane Palfrey commits suicide
2008-05-01 19:16:00 Deborah Jeane Palfrey, nicknamed the "D.C. Madam " for her operation of a high-end prostitution ring thinly disguised as an escort service, has reportedly committed suicide. WTVT/13 reports that Palfrey's body was found at her mother's residence in Tarpon Springs, Florida.Palfrey had recently been convicted on federal charges including money laundering and racketeering but was not charged directly with the operation of the prostitution ring itself. While many of the college-educated female "employees" of the operation had their identities revealed, few of the male clients' identities were made public. ----What's left in the wake of this tragedy is just the sense that so many people wasted their collective intelligence and time in this affair, Palfrey in organizing the ring, the young women for being employed in it, the male clients in its usage, the federal prosecutors for pursuing over the top charges and the gossip writers in over the top scandal mongering. Congressional Bowl approved by NCAA for D.C.
2008-05-01 12:54:00 The planned Congressional Bowl college football game has been approved by the NCAA for play in Washington, D.C. after the 2008 season. Approval culminates an effort by the politically connected Sean Metcalf, Marie Rudolph and the District of Columbia Bowl Commission to bring a bowl game to the city. The inaugural edition of the event will take place Saturday, December 20, 2008 at either Nationals Park or RFK Stadium between the Navy Midshipmen and an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent, assuming that both entities are eligible. The Mid-American Conference is the bowl's rumored backup plan in case Navy doesn't get the required six wins or the ACC does not offer enough bowl-eligible teams. For future years, bowl organizers also want to bring in the Army Black Knights and Air Force Falcons to continue the military theme of the event though the former would seem unlikely to become bowl eligible and the latter would have problems getting out of conference tie-in obligations.----Rel...
Chris Core hired by Bonneville's WTOP radio
More articles from this author:2008-04-30 22:35:00 Ex-WMAL-630 radio host Chris Core was hired this week by Bonneville-owned WTOP-103.5 radio to contribute minute long commentaries for the station. The politically oriented segments called "Core Values" will premiere on the afternoon of Thursday, May 1, replacing Mike Buchanan's generally non-political musings. Core became known for an increasingly conservative point of view as WMAL shifted from a general format to a right-wing talk station. While Core kept a significant audience, severe budget cutting from new WMAL owner Citadel Broadcasting eventually resulted in Core's unceremonious release. The possibility of Core getting his own talk show on sister station 3WT (WWWT/1500/107.7) has also been floated, notes the Washington Post, though no such program has been signed as of yet. My own profound differences with Core's perspective notwithstanding, 3WT could stand to use more local, relevant content.----Relevant link: Washington Post, Chris Core's Blog More About: Radio 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
