Wizards face must win game five at Cavaliers
2008-04-30 20:55:00
The Washington Wizards came out on all cylinders in a 36-point game three rout but fell just short in Sunday's game four, forcing the Wizards into a must win game five at the Cleveland Cavaliers to keep their postseason alive. Washington trails three games to one in the best of seven, so three straight wins are required for advancement beyond the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.Hopefully, the Wizards (especially one DeShawn Stevenson) can actually focus tonight on playing basketball and not fighting Rap Wars '08. No disrespect to Jay-Z or Soulja Boy intended but if I hear either one of their names in a basketball context again before 2018, it'll be too soon. UPDATE: The Wizards will also have to play this pivotal game five (and any other future postseason games this 2008) without Gilbert Arenas. The star player pulled himself out of action late Wednesday, citing continuing problems with his surgically repaired knee. The actual basketball version of game five will start at about 6...

Howard Bison, Georgetown Hoyas sign football series
2008-04-25 23:45:00
The Howard Bison and Georgetown Hoyas football programs have signed for a four-year home and home football series, matching the two Division I teams (Football Championship Subdivision level) of the District of Columbia. The first of these meetings will take place in early September 2008 at Howard. Despite the long histories of both programs, the sides had never met in football, a situation vaguely reminiscent of the Delaware and Delaware State squads having competed in close proximity but not against each other. Only in this case, it is the traditional black university Howard that would likely be considered the neutral site favorite. Both schools should be applauded for making this long overdue arrangement. Hopefully, Howard and Georgetown universities will market the series as something for which the whole of Washington, D.C. can take a working interest. And as long as Georgetown University wants to make deals with cross-city foes, a certain Smith Center-based basketball program wo...

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs open play for inaugural season
2008-04-25 21:44:00
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs team, the D.C. area's newest minor league baseball franchise, is set to launch its inaugural season. The Waldorf, Maryland-based squad will begin play on the road 7:05 p.m. Friday night at the Somerset (N.J.) Patriots. Formal home play will have to wait till Friday, April 25 when the newly constructed Regency Furniture Stadium opens for action. The Blue Crabs will be unique among area minor league franchises as part of the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an organization outside the formal Minor League Baseball structure. Atlantic League teams also have no official affiliations with major league baseball organizations. Former Boston Red Sox manager Butch Hobson was signed this offseason as the Blue Crabs' first manager. One similarity the Blue Crabs do share with other D.C. area minor league teams is a lack of terrestrial radio coverage. (What else is new??) New Jersey's WCTC radio will instead provide a live audio stream of th...

District Heights, Md. mayor / minister charged with solicitation
2008-04-24 19:51:00
District Heights, Maryland minister turned mayor James Walls, Jr. was arrested Wednesday night in the District of Columbia and charged with solicitation for lewd and immoral purposes. WRC/4 reports that Walls was arrested at the corner of Sixth and F streets in Northwest Washington, D.C. for allegedly soliciting a male prostitute who turned out to actually be an undercover police officer. Walls, now 30, became mayor of the Prince George's County municipality in 2006 at the age of 28, the youngest person to ever serve in the position. The kicker of course is that before becoming mayor, Walls had already established himself as a Baptist minister, serving most recently as an associate pastor of Forestville New Redeemer Baptist Church.Ironically, some of the early reaction on the net has actually been criticism of D.C. police for continuing such pursuit of relatively minor prostitution offenses at a time of spiraling violent crime, especially in the nearby 5th police district.----Relev...

Wizards resume playoff series down two games
2008-04-24 15:19:00
Lost in on the hoopla over the Verizon Center's other major men's pro team has been the Washington Wizards quest for playoff glory. Unfortunately, the Wizards attempt to rile up the rivalry with the Cleveland Cavaliers has only brought embarrassment and humiliation. The Wizards lost the first two game of the NBA Eastern Conference quarterfinal series including a humiliating 30 point defeat last Sunday in which center Brendan Haywood was ejected from the game for a hard foul on LeBron James. Thankfully, Haywood was not suspended and will return to action for tonight's virtual must win game.Start time is 8 p.m. back home at Verizon Center on TNT nationally, Comcast SportsNet regionally and WTEM/980 local radio.----

Washington Capitals eliminated from playoffs with OT loss
2008-04-23 11:43:00
The Washington Capitals comeback playoff effort ended just short Tuesday night as an overtime goal by Joffrey Lupul eliminated the Capitals from the NHL playoffs on a 3-2 score. The Lupul goal came off a power play after Tom Poti was whistled out for tripping. Washington largely dominated the course of play in game seven but was undone by two controversial goals. The second Flyers goal came after the goalie Cristobal Huet was dislodged on alleged interference that was never called. The final one was of course based on that power play. Some fans expected officials to put away their whistles during the extra period though the tripping call was technically accurate.Washington lost its Eastern Conference playoff series against Philadelphia four games to three. The Capitals would have faced the Pittsburgh Penguins with a victory. Due to the upset loss though, the Flyers instead advanced to face the New York Rangers under the reseeded playoff format. The Capitals do have the consolation th...

Capitals upset Flyers in game six, pivotal game 7 tonight
2008-04-22 22:21:00
The Washington Capitals faced the hardest step of their comeback effort head on and emerged triumphant, scoring four straight goals in a 4-2 game six victory over the Philadelphia Flyers . Alex Ovechkin broke his scoring drought in the third period with two goals to clinch the road upset at Wachovia Center. What's left for the Washington Capitals is a return to their home at Cup crazy Verizon Center tonight for the game seven finale of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Should the Capitals win their third straight must win game to finally advance, they would then be matched against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the conference semifinals.Tonight 's game seven marks the first one ever to be hosted by the Capitals at Verizon Center, a measure of just how dry the hockey landscape has been here in recent years. The focus of the D.C. are though will be squarely at Verizon tonight. Start time is 7 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet regionally, Versus nationally and WJFK/106.7 & WFED/1050 radio...

Capitals win needed game five; game six set @ Flyers
2008-04-21 11:37:00
The Washington Capitals won the first of three potential do or die games Saturday afternoon, dominating the Philadelphia Flyers by a 3-2 mark in game five. Alexander Semin, Nicklas Backstrom and Sergei Fedorov all scored for the Capitals while goalie Cristobal Huet helped the team withstand a late third period Flyers surge. While the Capitals victory was impressive, the team remains behind three games to two in the series headed into the all too crucial game six. Monday evening's game six in Philadelphia is another must win outing for the Capitals, despite the fact that home teams have won four of five games in the series to date. Washington will have to break that pattern and force a road victory to reach a game seven finale.Game six of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series will air on Comcast SportsNet regionally and WJFK/106.7 & WFED/1050 radio Monday evening at 7 p.m. EDT. In a late switch, Versus will NOT carry Capitals-Flyers game six due to coverage of the Boston/Montrea...
Storm damage, possible tornado in Maryland suburbs
2008-04-21 00:34:00
Severe storms traveling through the Washington, D.C. area Sunday triggered damage in at least two Maryland suburbs. Part of the roof of the George E. Peters Seventh-Day Adventist School near Hyattsville was blown off, tells the Prince George's County fire department spokesman to WTOP/103.5. A nearby church suffered damage from the subsequent school debris.Storm damage was also reported earlier along Renner Road in the Waldorf section of Charles County, Maryland. Fire department officials in both counties relayed reports that their damage was due to a tornado but the National Weather Service will need to inspect the damage patterns Monday to make any official determination. No tornado warnings had been issued for either county during daylight Sunday hours.----Relevant links: WRC/4, WTOP/103.5, WTOP/103.5 #2

Washington Wizards begin playoffs against Cavaliers (again)
2008-04-19 17:11:00
For the third straight year, the Washington Wizards will launch their playoff run against the Cleveland Cavaliers , this time though with the eventual outcome of the series a more uncertain proposition. The Wizards come in as the conference #5 seed with more questions than answers, largely over whether previously injured players will regain the form needed to prevail in the series. Gilbert Arenas missed 66 regular season games to repair a torn meniscus and has since been eased into action off the bench. To win, Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler will all need to play at or near full strength. What does work to the Washington Wizards ' favor though is that the #4 seed Cavaliers have their own questions. LeBron James remains as always the team superstar but his supporting cast has struggled to complement the young phenom. Should the Cavs not find their own winning formula, Washington could pull off the mild series upset.Game one is set for Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. on Comcas...

Capitals lose 2ot game four to Flyers, face do or die match
2008-04-18 18:34:00
The Washington Capitals came out with more focus and energy for game four of their playoff series against the Philadelphia Flyers but an elongated double overtime contest yielded the same losing result. Philadelphia came out with a 4-3 result to take command of the best of seven series at three games to one.Washington seemed poised to win game four and even the series before giving up a late regulation goal set up by a Caps' penalty for having too many men on the ice. The Capitals still mounted a threat but couldn't break through in the first sudden death overtime, finally tiring out in OT number two. What's left for the Washington Capitals is a return home to Verizon Center this Saturday afternoon for a do or die game. Another loss would eliminate the Capitals from the postseason. Hope still remains though if only because this squad has already proven its ability to perform in elimination contests.Start time is 1 p.m. on NBC national television (WRC/4 locally) and radio stations ...

Kissing Suzy Kolber co-blogger fired from Washington Post
2008-04-17 21:40:00
The collision between old media and new media has apparently produced another casualty, one Washington Post Metro writer Michael Tunison. It turns out that Tunison had also been a co-blogger on the sports site Kissing Suzy Kolber under the pseudonym "Christmas Ape." Once Tunison outed himself as a Post writer on the blog, complete with off-color language and a photo of himself intoxicated, the old media brushback became inevitable.Tunison was fired from the Washington Post , according to his own account, for failure to meet journalistic standards. The Post later claimed that Tunison resigned, a version since disputed by Tunison. The blogosphere being what it is, fellow netizens decided to take revenge by going apes--- on the Washington Post's D.C. Sports Bog in protest even though the Post's sports department had nothing to do with the situation. Outside of reality television, I haven't seen seemingly intelligent people act this freakin' silly in a long time. This controversy has...
