2008-06-09 15:30:00 A Code Red air quality alert is in effect for both today (Monday) and Tuesday for the Washington, D.C. area. The persistent Bermuda high pressure system that has brought the area excessive heat and humidity has also led to stagnant air across the Mid-Atlantic region.Area residents are being encouraged to limit driving and outdoor activities due to the heat and unhealthy air conditions. In most area suburban jurisdictions, Metro and other government bus service will be free during the Code Red alert period.----Relevant link: WTOP/103.5 More About: Alert , Quality

Clinton, Crist lead DCAbloob vice-presidential polls
2008-06-09 13:51:00 U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton (D - New York) and Governor Charlie Crist (R- Florida) lead the totally unofficial DCAbloob polls for the respective Democratic and Republican vice-presidential nominations. Controversies notwithstanding, Clinton has proven a dominant choice to date in lapping the Democratic field. Ex-Vice President Al Gore (D - Tennessee) is the next closest choice. On the Republican side, Governor Sarah Palin (R - Alaska) has actually received the most first place, first ballot votes to date but falls behind Gov. Crist when the instant runoff system comes into play.Voting for each poll will continue until the end of June, or until the respective party's presumptive presidential nominee makes his VP selection, whichever comes first. George Washington's Joe McKeown leaving for Northwestern
2008-06-08 17:31:00 George Washington Colonials women's basketball coach Joe McKeown is leaving his position after 19 seasons to become the new coach at Northwestern University, according to Mel Greenburg @ the Philadelphia Inquirer. GW Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz confirmed McKeown's departure in a GW Hatchet report. The move comes as a body blow to GW in particular and the Atlantic 10 conference in general after Temple coach Dawn Staley's departure to South Carolina.McKeown will reportedly receive an increase in salary from the Big 10 Conference school which hopes to upgrade its women's basketball program in the same way as its women's lacrosse program. The mid-major George Washington University program had already maxed out McKeown's contract and apparently could not further increase his salary. ----A more important rationale for the McKeown departure was a family consideration, according to the Greenberg report. While the consideration wasn't stated directly, it's already public knowle... More About: George , Leaving

Hillary Clinton suspends campaign, endorses Obama
2008-06-07 19:07:00 Hillary Clinton finally effectively ended her presidential campaign four days after she had already lost, endorsing fellow Democratic Senator Barack Obama for the presidential run. Clinton's campaign was officially placed under suspension, allowing for her to continue to raise money against her massive campaign debt. While it's noteworthy that Clinton finally came around to acknowledging the obvious, her concession only came after weeks of pointlessly damaging Obama. Clinton claimed up until today that Obama would have trouble winning some segments of voters in the general election. If that proves the case, it will be largely because Clinton did everything possible short of a convention fight to bring that scenario to life. If Barack Obama loses the presidential election come November, both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton should be held responsible for the defeat. More About: Hillary Clinton , Campaign , Hillary
Maryland, Virginia tornadoes confirmed in damage assessments
2008-06-07 00:46:00 The National Weather Service confirmed that at least six tornadoes struck Maryland and northern Virginia during Wednesday's massive storm outbreak. WRC/4 reports that National Weather Service meteorologists evaluated the Chesapeake Beach, Md. storm in Calvert County as an EF-0, the weakest form of tornado. The aerial pictures demonstrated if nothing else that even the weakest of tornadoes can cause significant damage.Northern Virginia's multiple damage patterns were caused at least in part by tornadoes as well. EF-1 tornadoes caused damage in Stafford, Culpeper and Fauquier counties. EF-1 is the next highest level of tornado severity after EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.Much of the damage that occurred in the Washington, D.C. area though was the result of straight line winds. Gusts of 70 to 80 mph over a wide geographic area caused over 300,000 customers to lose electrical service including the DCAbloob homestead. A few tens of thousands are still without power, an increasing c... More About: Tornadoes , Assessments , Damage
GW women's bball coach rumored to Northwestern
2008-06-06 23:43:00 George Washington University women's basketball coach Joe McKeown is rumored to be the lead candidate for the head coaching vacancy at Northwestern University. The report from Mel Greenberg on the Philadelphia Inquirer site indicates that McKeown was unavailable for comment, leading to more speculation that he could be in the final states of negotiation. Late rumored word on GWHoops.com indicates that McKeown's departure could be a done deal.McKeown has led the George Washington Colonials women's program to an unparalleled record of success including 15 NCAA tournament berths and three runs to the Sweet 16, the last two Sweet 16 bids in the team's most recent seasons. The idea that McKeown would leave this offseason after 19 seasons seemed inconceivable, the sudden turn of events only now being found out as Northwestern's coaching search had been cloaked in secrecy.----The one frustration that McKeown must have felt over the years was the constant struggle to build upon a small... Snyder / Red Zebra buys WTEM, WTNT, WWRC radio
2008-06-06 15:08:00 Feared rumors became reality as the Dan Snyder -owned Red Zebra radio officially announced the purchase of radio stations WTEM/980, WTNT/570 & WWRC/1260 from Clear Channel Communications. After FCC approval, the maneuver will give the Redskins' sister company an effective local monopoly on the sports talk radio format. It's often stated by defenders of Red Zebra that John Riggins and his compatriots have had relatively free reign in criticisms of the Redskins, that much is admittedly true to a partial extent. Of course, the former Triple X also has had to compete until now with the more freewheeling WTEM. With that competitive pressure about to be ended, Dan Snyder will no longer have the same need to maintain a veneer of legitimacy.---- Ironically, the stated reason for the maneuver by Red Zebra suits is to allow more outlets for Washington Redskins game broadcasts. Red Zebra already announced that WTEM, WTNT & WWRC will air the Washington Redskins games this upcoming season, crea... More About: Radio

The power outage parlor game
2008-06-06 12:48:00 As you may have guessed from reading the hopelessly out of date weather warnings remain up over the past several days, the DCAbloob homestead was knocked out by a power outage. From about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday to 3:15 a.m. Friday (excluding a half hour Thursday evening), your friendly neighborhood blogmaster has learned the "joys" of listening to the world go by via portable radio without being able to comment on anything. My own favorite power outage parlor game was to continually calculate just what percentage of people who has lost electricity had it restored before yours truly. It went from 50% restoration by daybreak Thursday to about 70% by a heat filled Thursday evening before the power briefly came on at 7:45 p.m. Of course, that restoration was just to jerk me around as it went right back off at 8:15 p.m.Finally, power was restored for good (I hope) at about 3:15 a.m. Friday morning. By my own rough calculation, 83% of the PEPCO Customers who has lost power were restored bef... More About: Power , Game , Outage

Barack Obama clinches Democratic presidential nomination
2008-06-04 03:33:00 Barack Obama has clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, accumulating enough delegate pledges to gain majority support at the Democratic National Convention. CBS News reports that despite losing the state as a whole, Obama won enough delegates in the South Dakota primary combined with pledged superdelegate support to put him over the top. The nomination victory was well-earned by Barack Obama, it is a great and remarkable achievement that can never be taken away from him. My disclaimer having been written, the deficits in Obama's support have become apparent and obvious over the past several months. Weaknesses among white working-class voters, Hispanics and women remain that stand to be exploited by John McCain in the general election campaign. With or without the support of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama will have his work cut out for him in reunifying the party. That work will need to be done though post-haste for Obama to maintain any serious hopes of becoming the next pr... More About: Barack Obama , Nomination , Presidential , Barack

Bernadette McGlade named Atlantic 10 commissioner
2008-06-03 17:55:00 Former ACC associate commissioner Bernadette McGlade has been named commissioner of the Atlantic 10 conference. McGlade's background in women's basketball should help in promoting women's programs like the D.C. area's George Washington as well as rivals Temple and St. Joseph's.More important for the Atlantic 10 fandom though may be McGlade's working knowledge of the sports television industry. The conference is still laboring under a restrictive deal signed with the former CSTV. The arrangement has blocked most local broadcasts of A-10 games on systems that don't carry CSTV (now known as CBS College Sports), a large majority of the northeastern and mid-Atlantic United States. ----Specifically to the D.C. area, the poor television contract has blocked George Washington Colonials from negotiating significant regional carriage deals with Comcast SportsNet (Mid-Atlantic) or with MASN, allowing Maryland, Georgetown and George Mason to dominate local coverage unchallenged. The new A... Jim Gilmore wins Virginia Republican nomination for Senate
2008-06-03 17:29:00 Jim Gilmore won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate from Virginia , taking the nod with only 50.3% of his party's delegate vote over state delegate Bob Marshall. Gilmore likely actually had a minority of the delegates at the weekend party convention but a weighting process for vote counts allowed him to eek out the win.The former governor had helped engineer a convention process for the nomination vote, essentially forcing the moderate Rep. Tom Davis out of the race before he could get into it. The path to a party coronation went awry though as instead of Davis taking on Gilmore from the center, Gilmore was severely hurt by a Marshall challenge from the far right. The end result is the best of all worlds from likely Democratic challenger Mark Warner. A former governor himself, Warner left office with far greater popularity than his Republican counterpart and will enter this race with vastly superior financial resources and a more unified party apparatus. The operative question m...
