WordPress 2.5
2008-03-29 17:49:00
WordPress 2.5, the culmination of six months of work by the WordPress community, people just like you. The improvements in 2.5 are numerous, and almost entirely a result of your feedback: multi-file uploading, one-click plugin upgrades, built-in galleries, customizable dashboard, salted passwords and cookie encryption, media library, a WYSIWYG that doesn’t mess with your code, concurrent post editing protection, full-screen writing, and search that covers posts and pages. For a short overview of the features with screenshots, it’d be best to visit our sneak peek announcement for RC1. Or check out a 4-minute screencast of the new interface in action. If you just want to jump straight to the good stuff here’s where you can find 2.5 upgrade and download information. If you want to see everything I would grab a cup of coffee or a mojito, because this post is epic. User Features Cleaner, faster, less cluttered dashboard — we’ve worked hard to take your feedb...

Screencast and WordPress 2.5 RC2
2008-03-26 12:36:00
2.5 is coming along thanks to the fantastic feedback you guys provided on RC1 (over 580 pingbacks and counting), and we’re now ready to show you a bit more of a peek with a short screencast covering the new dashboard and uploader and Release Candidate 2. First here’s the screencast, which is also available embedded below, as a Flash movie, or as a 17mb AVI download: I’ve uploaded more than a thousand photos already into the new gallery system — it works. (This was my first screencast, but I hope we can have more on WordPress.org and our documentation in the future.) If you make frequent backups and you’re interested in helping us out with development by testing the very latest, download and install Release Candidate 2 of WordPress 2.5, and join our testers mailing list to report any bugs you find in the code. Finally with regards to theme and plugin compatibility, we’ve had no reports of any broken themes in this upgrade, which makes sens...

2.5 Sneak Peek
2008-03-18 08:08:00
A customizable dashboard, multi-file upload, built-in galleries, one-click plugin upgrades, tag management, built-in Gravatars, full text feeds, and faster load times sound interesting? Then WordPress 2.5 might be the release for you. It’s been in the oven for a while, and we’re finally ready to open the doors a bit to give you a taste. For the past few months, we’ve been working with our friends at Happy Cog — Jeffrey Zeldman, Jason Santa Maria, and Liz Danzico — to redesign WordPress from the ground-up. The result is a new way of interacting with WordPress that will remain familiar to seasoned users while improving the experience for everyone. This isn’t just a fresh coat of paint — we’ve re-thought the look of WordPress, as well as how it’s organized so that you can forget about the software and focus on your own creative pursuits. Here are a few vignettes of what’s in store. The Dashboard The Dashboard’s most important role is to in...

WordPress 2.3.3
2008-02-05 06:02:00
WordPress 2.3.3 is an urgent security release. If you have registration enabled a flaw was found in the XML-RPC implementation such that a specially crafted request would allow a user to edit posts of other users on that blog. In addition to fixing this security flaw, 2.3.3 fixes a few minor bugs. If you are interested only in the security fix, download the fixed version of xmlrpc.php and copy it over your existing xmlrpc.php. Otherwise, you can get the entire release here. Also, there is a vulnerability in the WP-Forum plugin that is being actively exploited right now. If you are using this plugin, please remove it until an update is available from its author. Since we are talking security, remember to use strong passwords and change them regularly.  While you’re updating WP and your plugins, consider refreshing your passwords.

WordPress 2.3.2
2007-12-29 23:44:00
WordPress 2.3.2 is an urgent security release that fixes a bug that can be used to expose your draft posts. 2.3.2 also suppresses some error messages that can give away information about your database table structure and limits and stops some information leaks in the XML-RPC and APP implementations. Get 2.3.2 now to protect your blog from these disclosures. As a little bonus, 2.3.2 allows you to define a custom DB error page. Place your custom template at wp-content/db-error.php. If WP has a problem connecting to your database, this page will displayed rather than the default error message. For more detail on what’s new in 2.3.2, view the list of fixed bugs and see the changes between 2.3.1 and 2.3.2. Special thanks to Alex Concha for his help on this release.

WordPress 2.3
2007-09-25 03:22:00
I’m thrilled to announce that Version 2.3 “Dexter” of WordPress is now ready for the world. This release includes native tagging support, plugin update notification, URL handling improvements, and much more. This release is named for the great tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon. The entire team is really proud of this release, and I’m happy that this is our second on-time release under our new development schedule. The grand experiment of a more agile WordPress with significant features in the hands of users more often is working. I could write a blog post about each new feature, but I’ll try to be brief: Native tagging support allows you to use tags in addition to categories on your posts, if you so choose. We’ve included importers for the Ultimate Tag Warrior, Jerome’s Keywords, Simple Tags, and Bunny’s Technorati Tag plugins so if you’ve already been using a tagging plugin you can bring your data into the new system. The tagging...

New Faces
2007-09-24 07:41:00
If you follow WordPress development closely you’ve probably noticed a few new faces around lately, or to be more accurate a few old faces who are taking on bigger roles in the community. I would like to take this opportunity to announce and publicly congratulate Mark Jaquith and Peter Westwood who have both become lead developers, the highest development honor on WordPress.org. Mark Jaquith has been using and contributing to WordPress since 2004. Mark especially enjoys watching people use WordPress to express themselves in areas of the world where free expression is suppressed. But, being a voracious consumer of information, he probably reads your cat blog too. Peter works as an Embedded Software Engineer developing a web-enabled BMS controller. Using WordPress since version 1.0.1, Peter spends his spare time triaging bugs on Trac and investigating new open source tools. When not at the computer Peter can often be found photographing flowers, animals and cars and listening t...

Preparing for 2.3
2007-09-22 12:00:00
In just a few short days WordPress 2.3 will be coming out with tons of new features that (hopefully) will make you want to upgrade right away. Well while you have a bit of time over this lovely weekend, here are some things you can do to help yourself prepare for the big upgrade on Monday: Back up your blog. It never goes out of style, and we have a nifty Codex page with a few different methods. Check for the latest versions of your plugins. Here’s a list of known compatible and incompatible plugins with 2.3, Google Sitemaps seems to be one causing a lot of issues. (Forum thread.) Upgrading might get you cool new features anyway. Don’t forget about our plugin directory. Enjoy the last time you have to check for plugin updates manually, as 2.3 will do it magically behind the scenes. Read up on how to modify your theme to add tag support. Consider switching your install to use Subversion to make updating ultra-easy. Make a list of your friends who are less computer litera...
WordPress 2.3 Release Candidate 1
2007-09-19 06:50:00
The first release candidate for WordPress 2.3 is now available. We’ve spent the week since beta 3 fixing bugs and shaping RC1 into release candidate material. If you would like try RC1 and help us get 2.3 ready for its final release on Monday the 24th, download RC1 here and report any bugs you find. Although we consider this release candidate to be stable, keep in mind that this is still pre-release software. You may find some lingering bugs. Please back up your database before upgrading. If you have problems with RC1, you will not be able to revert back to your previous release without a database backup. And a big thanks to those of you who have been testing the betas and now the RC. Your efforts make 2.3 better for everyone.

WordPress 2.2.2 and 2.0.11
2007-08-05 08:22:00
Today we have two security-related releases available for both users of our main 2.2 branch and the legacy 2.0 branch. As these releases include only security and minor bugfixes they should not cause any plugin or theme compatibility issues, so you have no good excuse not to upgrade. On our Trac you can see the bugs closed for 2.2.2 and 2.0.11 to get more details about the problems fixed. With a little more Trac magic you can see all the changed files for 2.2.2 or 2.0.11. Our download page is always the best place to get the latest release, and our legacy page now has the latest in the 2.0 branch. As always, we have upgrade instructions available and an extended upgrade guide. Thanks to Alex C. and Benjamin Flesch for help with this release.

New Shirts; International Shipping
2007-07-21 03:06:00
One of the biggest complaints when we originally launched our t-shirt store was that folks outside of the United States, which is the majority of our traffic, were unable to order them. Now you can! (And we have a new style available.) At our official shop.wordpress.net you can order the new red t-shirt in either manly or girlie styles and they ship almost anywhere in the world. The shirts are high-quality American Apparel, and are screen-printed. Styles are available for a limited time, we’ll probably to about 2-3 a year, and once they’re gone the style will never be printed again. Update: Indigo the t-shirt company has a great post about the launch.

WordCamp in San Francisco
2007-06-25 11:49:00
Last year over 350 WordPressers of all ages and experience levels gathered in San Franc isco to share a day together. We’re now halfway through 2007, and there is a new WordCamp happening on July 21 and 22 that I hope many of you can make it to. This year we’re expanding the conference to two days instead of one with the first focusing on user and blog-facing topics, like search engine optimization and podcasting, and the second day will focus on more development topics, such as usability, iterative design, and the future of publishing. Speakers this year include several WordPress developers, Matt Cutts, John Dvorak, Robert Hoekman Jr., Dan Kuykendall, Om Malik, Rashmi Sinha, Lorelle Vanfossen, and Dave Winer. Check out the entire schedule. Just like last year there will be free lunch (with the legendary BBQ on Sunday) and t-shirts for everybody, and a party on Saturday night. Unlike last year we’re asking for $25 to help cover costs, but if that’s a problem t...

WordPress 2.2.1
2007-06-21 06:49:00
WordPress 2.2.1 is now available. 2.2.1 is a bug fix release for the 2.2 series. Since 2.2 was released a month ago, the WordPress community has been improving fit-and-finish by identifying and fixing those little bugs that can be so annoying and by fine-tuning some small details. The result is a nicely polished 2.2.1 release. The full list of bugs fixed in 2.2.1 is available here. Here are some highlights. Atom feed validation fixes (#4274, #4307, #4381, #4382) XML-RPC fixes (#4314, #4329, #4315, #4469) Widget backward compatibility fixes (#4275) Widget layout fixes for IE7 (#4264, #4268) Page and Text Widget improvements (#4302, #4259) Unfortunately, 2.2.1 is not just a bug fix release. Some security issues came to light during 2.2.1 development, making 2.2.1 a required upgrade. 2.2.1 addresses the following vulnerabilities: Remote shell injection in PHPMailer Remote SQL injection in XML-RPC Discovered by Alexander Concha. Unescaped attribute in default theme Special...

WebWare 100 Winner
2007-06-19 01:32:00
The results are in, and WordPress is the winner of the Webware 100 in the Publishing category. Thanks to everyone who voted, but thank you even more to all the great people who make WordPress what it is. It’s an honor to have so many of you entrust your blogs to our software, and it’s an incredible opportunity for us to live up to the high standards you’ve set. Here’s what Rafe Needleman wrote about the results: WordPress got the most votes. I was interested to see the Drupal CMS platform placing high in this category–above the consumer-oriented publishing products Typepad and Vox. Even combined, these two Six Apart services didn’t come close to winning the same number of votes as Drupal. Glad to see our open-source brother-by-another-mother representing. The rankings in Publishing were WordPress, Adobe Flash, Drupal, Blogger, and Google Analytics as the top 5.

Two Contests
2007-06-13 01:12:00
There are two contests going on in the WordPress community right now. If you’d like a chance to flex your WordPress skillz and perhaps win a prize and lifelong fame, you should consider dropping your code in the hat. The first is the Sandbox Designs competition, which is like a theme competition, but working only with CSS and the highly semantic Sandbox theme. They already have a thousand dollars in prizes, so check it out. Second our friends at Weblog Tools Collection are running a WordPress Plugin competition. They have a blog to track all the entries, but if you’re participating don’t forget to submit your code to the Plugin directory. Both competitions require entries to be under the same GPL license that WordPress is, so regardless of who wins they’ll make the entire community much richer. (Remember, WordPress itself was written on the base of existing GPL code!)

WordPress 2.2
2007-05-16 02:36:00
On behalf of the entire WordPress team, I’m proud and excited to announce the immediate availability of version 2.2 “Getz” for download. This version includes a number of new features, most notably Widgets integration, and over two hundred bug fixes. It’s named in honor of tenor saxophonist Stan Getz. Goodies: WordPress Widgets allow you to easily rearrange and customize areas of your weblog (usually sidebars) with drag-and-drop simplicity. This functionality was originally available as a plugin Widgets are now included by default in the core code, significantly cleaned up, and enabled for the default themes. Full Atom support, including updating our Atom feeds to use the 1.0 standard spec and including an implementation of the Atom Publishing API to complement our XML-RPC interface. A new Blogger importer that is able to handle the latest version of Google’s Blogger product and seamlessly import posts and comments without any user interaction beyond e...

WordPress 2.1.3 and 2.0.10
2007-04-03 09:50:00
We have a security update release now available for both the 2.1 and 2.0 branches of WordPress now available for immediate download. This update is highly recommend for all users of both branches. These releases include fixes for several publicly known minor XSS issues, one major XML-RPC issue, and a proactive full sweep of the WordPress codebase to protect against future problems. Many thanks to Sumit Siddharth and Alex Concha for their help with reporting issues in this release. As an update to the systems issue we had last month, we have taken dozens of additional precautions with the servers and systems that run WordPress.org and they appear to be working well, despite hundreds of hack attempts after we publicly disclosed there had been a problem. We are also now aggressively monitoring all downloads for any changes or modifications, and we are confident the same type of problem won’t happen again.

Plugin Directory
2007-03-15 23:57:00
One of the greatest things about WordPress has always been the amazing number of high-quality plugins available for the platform. I believe that there aren’t any more “killer features” in software, there are 10,000 killer features and everyone has a different 20. If we tried to put everything into WordPress the result would be, for lack of a better term, bloated. However through our robust plugin API people have used WordPress as a platform for building almost anything you can imagine leveraging the huge WP userbase and scalable core codebase. That’s all fine and dandy, but having all these plugins isn’t that useful if you’ve got no place to find them. Even though we have provided development hosting at wp-plugins.org for years, we hadn’t had a user interface to the plugins hosted there, which I think was a travesty. No longer! Our ever-expanding “extend” section now has a brand-spanking new plugins directory where you can browse...
