Bills Select DE Ellis in Third Round of NFL Draft
2008-04-27 16:29:00 Ellis figures in as #4 DE as rookie (Photo Source) With the seventy-second overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft , the Buffalo Bills have selected Virginia tech defensive end Chris Ellis. After spending the early part of their free agency period upgrading the interior of their defensive line with the additions of tackles Marcus Stroud and Spencer Johnson, the Bills have added another piece to their defensive line in the form of Ellis, whose strength is as a speed rusher. Ellis immediately becomes the #4 defensive end for the Bills, effectively replacing Anthony Hargrove, an unrestricted free agent who stood no chance of being re-signed by the Bills after failing a drug test, leading to another suspension. Ellis measures up at 6'4" and 263 pounds, and ran a 4.71-second 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine. That 4.71 speed will serve him well as a rookie, and he has the frame to get bigger. That likely won't happen in Buffalo, where smaller ends are preferred, but his ... More About: Round , Ellis , Select

Bills Fill Big Needs on Draft Day One
2008-04-27 04:18:00 Day one of the 2008 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Buffalo Bills have to be pleased with the two prospects that they picked up. Entering draft weekend with major needs at cornerback and receiver, the Bills were able to address both needs with talented players that can start immediately. Round 1, Pick 11: Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy - As we reported earlier in the week, McKelvin was the top guy on Buffalo's draft board all along. There was some concern among Bills brass that McKelvin would not be available at pick 11, as COO Russ Brandon mentioned in today's press conference, but it was clear that if McKelvin was available, he was the pick. McKelvin has been widely regarded as the best cornerback available this year for some time. Blessed with excellent size (5'10", 190) and speed (4.38 in the 40), McKelvin is a superb athlete with outstanding footwork. He is an aggressive all-around corner that is solid against the run, excels in zone coverage thanks to ... More About: Fill
WR Hardy is Bills' Choice in Round Two of NFL Draft
2008-04-27 01:14:00 Hardy should start next to Evans as rookie (Photo Source With the fourty-first overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft , the Buffalo Bills have selected Indiana wide receiver James Hardy. After passing on a receiver in round one in order to select CB Leodis McKelvin, the Bills were lucky to see no wide receivers taken in the first round, and the team had their pick of Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly and Hardy at this point. Ultimately, the Bills' choice was Hardy, who at 6'6" provides precisely the big-bodied target that the Bills coveted. Even at such height, Hardy pumped out a sub-4.5 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, proving his athleticism. Hardy is arguably the best red zone threat in the entire draft, and immediately gives young QB Trent Edwards a possession and red zone threat with the potential to be a vertical nightmare as well. Hardy is a matchup nightmare, and although he has some documented character concerns, they were not enough to deter the Bills fr... More About: Choice , Hardy , Round

Bills Select CB McKelvin in Round One of NFL Draft
2008-04-26 22:14:00 Troy alum should start at CB in Buffalo (Photo Source) With the eleventh overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft , the Buffalo Bills have selected Troy cornerback Leodis McKelvin. The small-school product with big-time potential was reportedly the top player on their board, and fills an immediate need at cornerback. We can now report that McKelvin was the top player available on Buffalo's board, which was finalized this week. The team did consider other options at one point earlier this week, but ultimately, McKelvin was "their guy" all along. Had McKelvin been gone, the team would have targeted a trade down, with selecting WR Devin Thomas atop the priority list. The McKelvin SkinnyMcKelvin is widely regarded as the top cornerback available this year and comes from a Troy program that has produced such NFL stars as Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware. McKelvin is a pro-ready corner that is a solid tackler, has good size, outstanding leadership skills and instincts, and is a... More About: Round , Select

In upgrading hardware configuration for the influx of the new 2.0 blogs, SB Nation ran into a spot of bad hardware, causing the first major outage since I've joined this fine network. The hardware issues have been fixed (clearly), but we've also been cautioned that they could resurface under heavy traffic loads. Please be assured that the network's tech gurus are doing everything in their power, 24/7, to ensure that every blog on this network is up and running as smoothly as possible, as quickly as possible. Dolphins' Pick is In; Good News for the Bills
2008-04-22 21:00:00 In a development that has taken place remarkably early, the Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms with offensive tackle Jake Long on a 5-year, $57.5 million contract ($30 million guaranteed), which will make Long the first overall pick in Saturday's NFL Draft. The Dolphins have been negotiating with Long for over a week; the team, headed up by Bill Parcells, had also been rumored to be interested in defensive ends Chris Long (Virginia) and Vernon Gholston (Ohio State). While at first glance it may not be the best news to hear that the draft's elite tackle prospect will be playing in the division, this is a development that could be a favorable one for the Buffalo Bills. It has been quite some time since the clear best option for the Bills in the draft has been to trade down; the Bills, who are likely to target a wide receiver or cornerback with their top pick, could trade down and still pick up the top player on their board (whoever that may be). Rumblings Authors Mock, V2.0: Round Three Picks
2008-04-22 14:24:00 After unveiling our first and second round picks over the last two days, the authors of Buffalo Rumblings are now ready to unveil the ultra-important third round of our Authors Mock Draft. Through two rounds (eight selections total), the four of us have predicted a whopping seven players will be the newest Buffalo Bills come this weekend (Oklahoma WR Malcolm Kelly is the only repeat pick). Here's how we chose in round three: Brian Galliford's Pick 3-72: Tyvon Branch, CB, Connecticut - I have Branch rated as the #8 corner on my board, which leaves out players who would struggle in Buffalo's preferred style of defense. Branch has outstanding straight-line speed (4.31), is tough and competitive, has excellent leadership qualities and works his tail off. He's talented enough to start in a Cover 2 defense in this league, plus he can return kicks. He'd be a great fit as a dime back to start (while upgrading the team's special teams units), and has enough talent and potent... More About: Round

Bills an Enigma Entering Draft Weekend
2008-04-21 19:59:00 Jauron, Bills have plenty of options this weekend (BuffaloBills.com) With the 2008 NFL Draft a mere 122(ish) hours from commencing, NFL experts and draft gurus everywhere are beginning to ramp up predictions and step out on limbs everywhere. Perhaps the most irritating and difficult slot for those experts to predict lies right after the top ten - right where the Buffalo Bills select. Let's face it - the Bills have the look of the wildest of wild cards as draft day approaches. With only one clearly-defined need (wide receiver) and the potential to select a player at one of a half-dozen positions in the first-round - and we haven't even mentioned a trade down yet - the Bills are almost assuredly going to leave at least one fan puzzled with their draft-weekend dealings. Rumblings Authors Mock, V2.0: Round Two Picks
2008-04-21 14:36:00 With round one of the second go-round of the Buffalo Rumblings Authors Mock unveiled yesterday, it's naturally time to move on to round two. For anyone who missed it, each author here is predicting all ten Buffalo Bills picks; the real selections, of course, will be made this coming weekend. Round two is coming at you right now; round three, rounds four and five, and rounds six and seven will all be posted on successive days, ending this project on Thursday. Without further ado, here are the authors' second-round picks: Brian Galliford's Pick 2-41: John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame - I'm of the mind that the Bills need to find a starting tight end in this draft, relegating Robert Royal back to his more suitable #2 TE role. I've been a big advocate of Texas A&M's Martellus Bennett, and still have him as the top tight end available this year, but he could very well be gone by the time the Bills pick in the second round. Carlson is not quite as quick but is tougher afte...

Also, quite frankly, the Bills sucked and had nothing but crap picks for years. This list would get mighty long. Lastly, many stats we now use to judge players weren't even created yet. Tackles were not counted, and neither were sacks. Since most of us wouldn't know anything about the guys, it would be a useless exercise. Conflicting Reports on Potential Losman Trade
2008-04-19 16:04:00 Losman's future may be decided over draft weekend (BuffaloBills.com) Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the Buffalo Bills had made the decision to keep quarterback J.P. Losman, who earlier this off-season had requested a trade out of Buffalo after losing his starting job to rookie Trent Edwards. The reports were based on COO Russ Brandon's comments at the team's annual pre-draft luncheon; it is now becoming clear that while these reports were not erroneous, they may have been misled. Mid-to-late April is routinely a time in which NFL executives league-wide are keeping team news very close to the vest. Interviews this time of the year are generally canned responses, incredibly generic overviews of the draft process, and not-so-veiled attempts at avoiding questions. Brandon's short answer, in which he merely stated that Losman was still a part of this Bills franchise, may have been an example of these truthful-escape answers typical of this time of year. 2008 Draft Class Top Heavy in D Talent
2008-04-18 21:28:00 CB Cason one of six first-round CB talents (The Wildcat Online) For months, fans of the Buffalo Bills have deliberated about the top prospects available in this year's NFL Draft . The arguments have been intense and constructive (especially those in this community), and they've boiled down to two main arguments: the Buffalo Bills need a wide receiver and should take one with their top draft choice, or the Buffalo Bills need a wide receiver and shouldn't take one with their top draft choice. With the draft just over a week away, the latter argument - that the Bills should wait to take a wide receiver - is quickly picking up support. Why? Well, the vast majority of this year's best prospects play defense. And the top draft prospects on the offensive side of the ball play positions that the Bills don't have a dire need at, namely quarterback, running back and offensive line. News and Notes: Non Draft News Exists?
More articles from this author:2008-04-18 00:02:00 Sometimes, the NFL Draft can get overwhelming. We've spent weeks upon weeks breaking down draft prospects, strategies, and all the other wherewithal you hear about this time of the year as it pertains to the Buffalo Bills. For me personally, it has gotten to the point where any hard news is a breath of fresh air (or a "fresh of breath air", if you're Robert Royal). Here are five Buffalo Bills articles you should be reading (if you haven't already) - and two of them aren't even about the draft! The official site has a nice piece up on SLB Angelo Crowell this evening. It outlines Crowell's off-season rehabilitation after triceps surgery, his thoughts on the new defensive additions (specifically new running mate Kawika Mitchell), and the upcoming season. An excellent, non-draft related Bills article. Fresh of breath air indeed. A certain Mr. Bialy of RealFootball365.com thinks that DE Al Wallace, a participating member of the Bills organization for about 3 defensive ... More About: News , Notes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
