News and Notes: Non Draft News Exists?
2008-04-17 23:02:00 Sometimes, the NFL Draft can get overwhelming. We've spent weeks upon weeks breaking down draft prospects, strategies, and all the other wherewithal you hear about this time of the year as it pertains to the Buffalo Bills. For me personally, it has gotten to the point where any hard news is a breath of fresh air (or a "fresh of breath air", if you're Robert Royal). Here are five Buffalo Bills articles you should be reading (if you haven't already) - and two of them aren't even about the draft! The official site has a nice piece up on SLB Angelo Crowell this evening. It outlines Crowell's off-season rehabilitation after triceps surgery, his thoughts on the new defensive additions (specifically new running mate Kawika Mitchell), and the upcoming season. An excellent, non-draft related Bills article. Fresh of breath air indeed. A certain Mr. Bialy of RealFootball365.com thinks that DE Al Wallace, a participating member of the Bills organization for about 3 defensive snaps last year... More About: News , Notes
Playing the NFL Draft Board Game: Open Thread
2008-04-17 15:19:00 Modrak, Bills fine-tuning draft board for April 26 (BuffaloBills.com) With the 2008 NFL Draft now just nine days away, football fans are now attempting to figure out exactly how their favorite team has set up their draft board so as to eliminate any "surprise" (read: unthinkably dumb) selections on Draft Day. (Sorry, Jets fans - not working for you.) In the case of the Buffalo Bills, however, the club has already informed the general public as to how they set up their draft board. Can we, then, leap inside the minds of the front office at One Bills Drive to figure out who the team will be selecting come Draft Day? First, the Structure It's no secret that the man making the decisions on draft day (in conjunction with head coach Dick Jauron) is Tom Modrak, the team's Vice President of College Scouting. TE Bennett is Bills' Second Round (Mock) Draft Choice
2008-04-16 14:59:00 Bennett rising up draft boards quickly (AP Photo) The Buffalo Bills , ably represented by this community, have made our second round choice in the 2008 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft . That pick is Texas A&M TE Martellus Bennett. Bennett received over 40% of the vote from this community, with WR James Hardy and TE Dustin Keller bringing up the rear with 20% each. Bennett, regarded by many as the best all-around tight end prospect in this year's draft class, is seeing his stock rise quickly in the two weeks preceding the draft. Head on over to Mocking the Draft (draft headquarters) to check out the pick rationale, but especially for the grade and pick analysis from New Era Scouting. Bennett an Immediate Starter? There are two tight ends that I'm very fond of in this draft class - Bennett and Notre Dame's John Carlson. Why? Because the Bills are looking to get bigger and more physical across the board, especially offensively (now that they've achieved that in their defe... More About: Choice , Round , Bennett

Reopening the WR Trade Market?
2008-04-15 18:26:00 [editor's note, by Brian Galliford] Bumped from the diaries. Excellent points brought up as usual by jri111. End Note From Saturday's Buffalo News: Give us your thoughts on our Buffalo Bills pick -- Tennessee State CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie. You might be surprised I didn't give the Bills a wide receiver. Don't be. Word is the Bills don't have a receiver rated high enough to warrant the 11th overall selection. I sense that the Bills might try to trade for a veteran wideout before the draft. There are two major roadblocks to such a thought, however. First, the WR trade market is nearly non-existent. Other teams like Philly have tried unsuccessfully to trade for big names such as Roy Williams and Larry Fitzgerald without much luck, and there is little chance that other teams would have better luck. Second, issue of money. Money, of course is always a concern when it involves the Bills. Any WR Buffalo trades for would most likely require a large contract. That's hard... SBNation NFL Mock Draft, Round Two: Bills On The Clock
2008-04-15 01:10:00 Hosted at Mock ing the Draft OK, fellow Rumblers - the time is now for y'all to put on your GM hats and enter the war room. The Buffalo Bills are once again on the clock in the 2008 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, and just like in the first round, this community will be making the team's second-round selection. In case you missed it, our first-round pick was Oklahoma WR Malcolm Kelly (and yes, the selection was submitted before he bombed his Pro Day April 9). Selections 1-37 are viewable at the host site of the mock draft, while picks 38-40 have been made "behind the scenes". Here are the five players that we'll be choosing from in this round; if you don't like this list, feel free to add names in the comments section. (Note: Virginia Tech CB Brandon Flowers has been left off of this list because I believe that there is a 99% chance that the Ravens will take him with pick 38 this evening. 2008-04-14 15:24:00 Crowell scheduled for free agency in 2009 (BuffaloBills.com) With the 2008 NFL Draft taking place less than two weeks from today, draft chatter is taking place at a more frequent pace than ever. In the case of the Buffalo Bills, we have already ironed out the team's biggest needs heading into the draft. But this time of year is more than about building a winning team - it's about planning for the future, as well. No, we're not talking about player age - we did that yesterday - instead, we're talking about contracts. Over the next two years (2008-09 and 09-10), the Bills have several key starters and depth players who are scheduled to become restricted or unrestricted free agents. Whether or not the Bills plan on making an attempt to re-sign these players, their uncertain futures after a year or two may force the Bills to build an unusual amount of depth at those positions. Here's a breakdown of prominent free agents - starters and key reserves alike - over the next... More About: Building , Contract , Game , Roster

In the case of the Buffalo Bills, we have already ironed out the team's biggest needs heading into the draft. But this time of the year is more than about building a winning team - it's about putting together a roster with proper numbers that will allow a team to best put together a 53-man roster come September. How influential is the "training camp roster" (size: 80) on the draft-day process? Clearly it's not close to being the biggest factor considered when a selection is made, but where the Bills are lacking severely in numbers - and they have positions in that precise situation - could dictate how many players the Bills choose at each position. Player types, part four: Potential Bills Cornerbacks
2008-04-11 21:00:00 Antoine Cason can contribute immediately, but do the Bills need that? (Jake Lacey, The Wildcat Online) Today we conclude our four-part series examining the types of players, rather than specific players, that the Buffalo Bills may target during the draft. The aim of these articles has been to try to come to a consensus on what type of player the Bills should be looking to add to the roster. Today's position: Cornerback. Should the Bills add a player who can come in and play right away? Where will we address this position? CORNERBACK: Do we need an immediate impact, or can we let a player develop? With pretty decent depth at the position we may be able to pick up a developmental prospect while sticking with what we've got on the field. However, none of the players we have is going to be confused with Champ Bailey or even Nate Clements. It may be wise to finally bring in a top flight CB again, one who is going to see a lot of action early on. If that doesn't h... More About: Player , Part , Types

Potential Bills: A Case for Antoine Cason
2008-04-11 03:48:00 Cason is a darkhorse candidate to be Buffalo's top pick. And yes... that is Trent Edwards he's blitzing. I'll admit it. I've been sitting on a secret for a while. I was swayed by popular opinion and media hype, and my firm belief that the Buffalo Bills must take a wide receiver in the first round of this year's NFL Draft (a belief I still believe to be true). It's a secret that directly contradicts said belief, but I don't care - every blogger needs their favorite draft prospect, right? My secret: Arizona CB Antoine Cason is my favorite draft prospect this year. At any position. Period. Cason is starting to get more media hype as we get closer to the draft (and I've been easing y'all into this in the comments section), so now it's time to talk about Cason. As a potential first-round draft choice of the Bills. Yes, I said it - and I'll take it a step further. At pick 11. Player types, part three: Potential Bills Fullbacks
2008-04-10 15:34:00 Mike Cox could be a real steal at the end of the draft (Savannah Morning News) Today, we bring you part three of a four-part series examining the types of players, rather than specific players, that the Buffalo Bills may target during the draft. The aim of these articles is to try to come to a consensus on what type of player the Bills should be looking to add to the roster. Now up: Fullback. Will the Bills need a short yardage lead blocker only? Where will we address this position? FULLBACK: Does the offense need a FB for all running downs or just short yardage? I wish we all knew how Turk Schonert plans to utilize the FB this upcoming season. With veteran Darian Barnes on board, the Bills may not even consider the position a need heading into this month's Draft. If the staff is not comfortable with Barnes, it is very likely we will see a FB picked this year. If we are going to be using a FB on most first and second down plays, it is likely to be a higher priorit... More About: Player , Part , Types
Malcolm Kelly Flops; Where Does Buffalo Turn?
2008-04-10 02:08:00 WR Thomas should shoot up draft boards with Kelly dropping (AP Photo) As a draft prospect that has for an entire off-season been linked to the Buffalo Bills, Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly did his best to burn part of that bridge today, as he worked out for the first time in front of scouts at Oklahoma's Pro Day. Or maybe it was Oklahoma itself burning the bridge. Kelly ran a disappointing 4.68 second 40-yard dash on Wednesday, part of a workout that leaves the player's first-round prospects in serious doubts. Kelly's 32-inch vertical leap left something to be desired as well; though reports have indicated that Kelly looked solid in positional drills, the soon-to-be-rookie was less than thrilled with his performance. The problem is, Kelly didn't put the blame on himself. That was laid directly on the shoulders of his alma mater. In a move that can be construed to be "me-first", Kelly blamed Oklahoma officials for his poor performing after the venue for the wor... More About: Turn
Buffalo Rumblings Exclusive: Matt Miller, New Era Scouting Interview
2008-04-09 13:33:00 New Era Scouting Yes, this is a blog dedicated to the Buffalo Bills. What's nice about this place, however, is that our interests extend beyond the Buffalo Bills. Not very far, mind you; we're only talking the NFL Draft here, so let's not get carried away. So for the draftniks in the Rumblings crowd - and I'm 99% sure that that's every single one of us - we've got a treat for you this morning. Matt Miller , a pro football scout who runs his own scouting service over at New Era Scouting and who represents the NFL Draft wing of SB Nation over at Mocking the Draft, very graciously set aside some time this week to answer questions from you, the readers of Buffalo Rumblings. (You may also know Matt from his work on hammering out each team's positional needs with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.) Below are the ten reader-submitted questions that I chose for the interview, and Matt has, as is his calling card, provided us with excellent insight. So, without further pom... What I Know and What I Think
2008-04-08 19:41:00 [editor's note, by Brian Galliford] Geronimo, resident Buffalo Rumblings insider and one of our more tenured posters, kindly offers us his latest opinions and insight as we draw closer to Draft Day. Take it away, G. End Note Well, there are about two-plus weeks before the NFL Draft and like everybody I am anxious/curious to see how the whole thing turns out. I have not posted here for quite a while and thought it may be useful to prattle on with a few thoughts as to what may be going on at One Bills Drive. Much of this is informed opinion as always - some my own perception. First, you should all know that there are really only two opinions that will matter on Draft Day. Opinions will have been sought and offered by all of the Bills' scouts, position coaches, and Perry Fewell and Turk Schonert - and they will all have been listened to carefully. But at the end of the day Tom Modrak and Dick Jauron will make every single call. It may surprise you that this is no different than in...
Just how bad are Buffalo's Receivers?
2008-04-08 14:39:00 Reed (right), fellow wideouts as bad as advertised? (BuffaloBills.com) Led by a rookie quarterback in Trent Edwards and missing a veteran starter at wide receiver (Peerless Price), the passing attack of the Buffalo Bills is coming off of one of the franchise's worst season-long performances in team history. We've heard all of the paltry stats - an NFL rank of 30 in team receptions (263), 31 in receiving yards (2,842) and tied for second worst in receiving touchdowns (12). How much of this (lack of) production, however, can be attributed to the team's wide receivers? In order to get a more accurate view of the ineptitude of Buffalo's receiving corps (or lack thereof... bear with me), we're going to take a look at some different stats: yards after catch (YAC), yards per catch, drops, big catches (25+ yard gains), and first down percentage. These numbers may, in fact, shed a different light on the situation. Crunching the Bonus Numbers Here are the rankings, very brie... More About: Receivers
Player Types, Part Two: Potential Bills Tight Ends
2008-04-07 19:35:00 Dustin Keller could be the receiving threat the TE position lacks (Ben Drinkut, Purdue Exponent) Here comes part two of a four-part series examining the types of players, rather than specific players, that the Buffalo Bills may target during the draft. The aim of these articles is to try to come to a consensus on what type of player the Bills should be looking to add to the roster. Now up: Tight End. Should the Bills add an all-around TE or a receiving option only? Where will we address this position? TIGHT END: Should the Bills draft an all-around TE or a one-dimensional receiving threat? This is a pick that I've been going back and forth on. Should we bring in a player who is a solid blocker, but not a big time receiving threat, or should we go after a TE who's going to be more Dallas Clark than Jason Witten? To me, I have no idea which way the Bills will go, but I see the value in going either way. On one hand, we have Robert Royal as our only proven block... More About: Player , Part , Types , Ends
Happy Birthday, Buffalo Rumblings
2008-04-07 14:24:00 Buffalo Rumblings turns one year old today! Exactly one year ago today, this blog made its official launch into the Buffalo Bills blogosphere - and it was a rather inauspicious start, to say the least. However, in just a year's time, this blog has grown into a vibrant, budding community of Bills fans - and it has been an absolute pleasure to see it happen. Some fun facts before I hand out some thank-yous: In one year, Buffalo Rumblings has had: 325,183 unique visitors 709,241 page views 419 registered Rumblers (with more every day!) Fantasy football, plenty of trash talk and one hell of a year-long party. I'd like to quickly give a shout-out to some people who have made my life much easier during this first year of blogging, and who have made this little venture of ours incredibly worthwhile: Dock Ellis: Dock was the first-ever diarist on Buffalo Rumblings, and his outstanding writing helped give this blog respectability in the early going. Bills May Look to Add Return Threat in Draft
2008-04-06 15:38:00 McGee may focus more on CB than KR (BuffaloBills .com) Ever since special teams coordinator Bobby April joined the Buffalo Bills' coaching staff in 2004, the Bills' special teams unit have been among the most dominant units in the league. Part of the reason for their success has been the fact that two of the unit's stars, kick returner Terrence McGee and punt returner Roscoe Parrish, rank among the league's elite in what they do. However, that may change during the 2008 season, at least from the kick return standpoint. McGee, who will turn 28 during the '08 season, has been a starting cornerback and the full-time kick returner for the past three seasons. That type of work load will be difficult to McGee to shoulder, especially as Buffalo's coaching staff continues to rely on him to improve as a defender. Heading into the 2008 draft, it is imperative for the Bills to find a kick return threat that can replace McGee as the "starter" and allow the veteran corner to foc...
