Sir Alex: This is Rooney's year
2007-07-27 19:50:00
Wayne Rooney has been tipped to have a "great season" next year after his first uninterrupted pre-season with the Reds since joining in 2004.Rooney finished up as United's joint-top goalscorer last term, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo with 23 goals. It followed a run of 11 goals in 16 games in the final three months of a campaign which began with some questioning his form. But, according to Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson , the 21-year-old striker will benefit immeasurably from the freshness of having a rare close-season rest and full preparatory work ahead of the new campaign."He just loves football and loves training and he will be a big player next year, believe me," Sir Alex told The Sun."He will have a great season, because he's had a proper pre-season for the first time with us. He will be fine. Nothing bothers Wayne. He is incredible, a very strong character."Rooney's insatiable hunger for football has left a lasting impression on the United boss, who describes the forward's appet...

Boss keen on Tevez-Rooney axis
2007-07-26 12:27:00
If Carlos Tevez can gain clearance to complete a move to United, Sir Alex Ferguson believes the Argentina international and Wayne Rooney can form an excellent strike partnership, despite suggestions that they are too similar to play in the same side. The wrangle over ownership of the 23-year-old West Ham forward appears headed for the High Court after lawyers for Kia Joorabchian initiated legal proceedings against the Hammers. United are still confident that a solution can be found before the 31 August transfer deadline. And Reds boss Sir Alex remains excited by prospect of Tevez linking up with United's no.10."I think Tevez and Wayne can play in the same side together," he told PA Sport. "I know people say they both like to drop deep but if you look at the FA Cup Final Wayne Rooney played up on his own and he was absolutely fantastic. That is where I see his future anyway."He can drop in and give defenders a problem. Equally so, Tevez showed against us on the final day and against p...

Rooney lawyers challenge book
2007-07-22 14:44:00
An unauthorised biography of Wayne Rooney has brought a flurry of lawyers? letters over its tales of blackmail and murky underworld characters. The book about the Manchester United and England star?s life has been written by John Sweeney. The television reporter became known as the ?exploding tomato? when his rant at a member of the Church of Scientology was posted on the internet.Sweeney?s book, Roo Unzipped, concentrates on some of what he calls the ?decidedly shadowy and unsavoury characters? who have latched on to the multimillionaire player?s career. The cast includes a gangster who, according to Sweeney, ?took an unhealthy interest? in the progress of Rooney, 21.Other characters include a blackmailing associate of the player?s former agent; Kevin Dooley, described by Sweeney as ?a very dodgy lawyer, sadly now dead?; and Patricia Tierney, a Merseyside grandmother whom Rooney paid for sex.The sensitivity of claims in the book, to be published next month, has brought letters from S...

Rooney up front and honest
2007-07-21 19:58:00
Wayne Rooney insists he's given little thought to who may partner him up front during the 2007/08 season.Sir Alex handed Cristiano Ronaldo a forward berth in Friday's handsome win over FC Seoul and the pair linked well to create United's first and third goals. But it's unlikely Ronaldo will be regularly employed that far forward when the Barclays Premier League kicks off next month. The manager also has options in Louis Saha, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Alan Smith and Giuseppi Rossi. And, if Sir Alex gets his way, Argentina international Carlos Tevez will be Old Trafford bound. But Rooney says he's only concentrating on getting fit for the new season."I haven't thought about who I might be playing alongside next season," the United ace told MUTV while in South Korea."With so much competition for places it's going to be tough and I'll have to play well to keep my place in the team. That's what I'm aiming to do."Rooney said the team's focus will be on retaining the Premier League ...

Rooney and Ronny shine in Seoul
2007-07-20 17:37:00
Sir Alex Ferguson cited the trial of partnering Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in attack as one of the major plus-points of Friday?s 4-0 win over FC Seoul. Both players got on the scoresheet and linked up well, adding to goals from young midfielder Chris Eagles and Patrice Evra, who was used as a left midfielder. The United boss says pairing Rooney and Ronaldo is a system he may use away from home in the future.?We looked at a system where we could get the qualities of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney together,? Sir Alex told MUTV. ?This is a system we could maybe play away from home.?It was interesting and they worked well together. They showed good understanding and changed positions a few times which caused their defence problems. That was a plus-point for us. Cristiano got the Man of the Match award for 45 minutes? work!?The heat and humidity of Seoul proved draining in the second half, but it was a first-half performance that yielded three goals without reply that pleased S...

Rooney harbours high hopes
2007-07-03 20:55:00
Wayne Rooney spent last season desperate to get his hands on his first Premier League trophy. Now he's held the prize aloft, he can't wait to add to his medal tally."It's just not just about winning the odd trophy. It's about winning them all the time. The players know their role in keeping up the club's amazing history and success."- Wayne RooneyRooney, who joined United from Everton in August 2004 and has now won both the league and the Carling Cup with the Reds, told The Mirror he's hungry for more success."It's just not just about winning the odd trophy," he said. "It's about winning them all the time."The 21-year-old striker, who last week switched squad numbers to take over the no.10 shirt previously worn by United hitmen Denis Law and Mark Hughes, said legends like those provided constant motivation."The [current] players know their role in keeping up the club's amazing history and success. Players in the past have set the standard: now we've got to carry it on."

Reds launch new home kit
2007-07-02 07:57:00
United have unveiled their new home kit ahead of the new season.A giant image of the team in the new Nike -produced kit adorns the East Stand window at Old Trafford. The players will wear it for the first time during their first match of their Asia Tour against Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan later this month. The front of the new home shirt features an engineered mesh pattern inspired by the architecture of Old Trafford and the contours of the body. On the back a flash of white tape frames the name and number with a fine black stripe, MUFC and the Red Devil emblem inside. As a final touch there is a label with the Red Devil emblem and the nickname 'The Red Devils.' White shorts and black socks complete the kit.It has been made using Nike Dri-FIT fabric which helps transport moisture away from the skin to the fabric?s surface for rapid evaporation, keeping the players comfortable for longer. It's already a popular design with the squad and they believe the fans will be equally impresse...

Wayne Rooney is changing his United squad number from 8 to 10 for the forthcoming season and beyond. To mark the switch, Wayne met probably the club's greatest ever number 10, Denis Law for a special photograph at Carrington."When I was offered the chance to wear the number 10 shirt I jumped at it," says Wayne."Some of the game's greatest players have become legends wearing number 10, none more so than Denis Law."He was crowned King of the Stretford End during his time at the club and it is a great honour for me to wear a shirt that has such history behind it."Rooney's manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wayne is a worthy addition to the roll-call of players who've worn the iconic red shirt."There have been some wonderful footballers who have worn the Manchester United number 10 shirt," says Sir Alex."These men have captured the imagination of our fans around the world with their skill and their goals. 'Overjoyed' Rooney gets kick out of ring walk
2007-06-25 08:43:00
Wayne Rooney admitted feeling more nervous waiting in Ricky Hatton's dressing room, just before the Mancunian fighter's ring walk, than when pulling on a Manchester United or England football shirt."Terribly nervous," said the striker, who has forged a friendship with Hatton and was invited to carry Hatton's International Boxing Organisation light-welterweight belt through a raucous British contingent of more than 10,000 travelling fans into the ring. "I was more nervous than I am for United. It was just completely different - you're not used to doing these things."I tried to stay out the way [in the dressing room] because I know when I play you want to get focused and ready for whatever you're doing. So I decided to get out of the way and let him get on."Rooney said he was delighted for Hatton. "Unbelievable, amazing. I was overjoyed by it. It was a brilliant experience [to walk in with Hatton]. The result made it even better so it was a great experience."Rooney also experienc...

Wayne in WAG wedding worry
2007-06-16 08:28:00
'WAG wedding weekend' is causing some dilemma in the heads of WAYNE ROONEY and fiancé COLEEN MCLOUGHLIN, after the pair were invited to the weddings of no less than four footballer friends. This weekend sees the weddings of Manchester United skipper GARY NEVILLE and his fiancé EMMA HADFIELD, Chelsea and England captain JOHN TERRY and TONI POOLE, Liverpool midfielder STEVEN GERRARD and ALEX CURRAN, and Manchester United playmaker MICHAEL CARRICK and LISA ROUGHEAD.But Wayne and Coleen are the only couple to be invited to all four weddings and have to make a choice.Thankfully, Terry's wedding takes place at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire today, while Neville's takes place tomorrow afternoon, so Wayne and Coleen can attend both. The couple can also make it to Carrick's post-wedding barbeque on Sunday, but Gerrard's wedding on Saturday had to be declined."Wayne is mates with all four and he would love to be at all four weddings," a friend told the Daily Mail. "He and Coleen have been...

Papers: Wazza's key game
2007-06-13 15:46:00
Gunners Fired Roo To VictoryWayne Rooney has thanked Arsenal for helping him win the Premiership. Rooney, 21, was Manchester United?s joint-top goalscorer as he claimed his first title medal. He pinpointed many key games during the campaign including back-to-back late wins over Fulham and Liverpool in February and March. But Rooney believes it was the 1-0 home defeat to the Gunners on September 17 that spurred them on to glory. The striker told Inside United: ?The Liverpool away match was a really big result for us. We didn?t play all that well but to steal the winner at the end was a great feeling. Everyone was buzzing after that. Fulham was a big game as well - another late win! The fact that they came close together made it even better. Sometimes those games where you win it late on are the best because you?re not expecting it. But one result that stands out in my mind is losing to Arsenal at home in September. We went on a brilliant run of wins after that.?Source: Neil Custis, T...

Rooney: Reds' spirit unbreakable
2007-06-12 15:31:00
United may have made three big-money signings this summer but Wayne Rooney believes it is the Reds ' growing team spirit that will make the side a force to be reckoned with again next season. The 21-year-old striker - joint top scorer alongside Cristiano Ronaldo with 23 goals last term (his best return since joining United in 2004) - is a firm believer that United's ability to overcome adversity is a huge asset in the team's favour.Asked to pick three decisive results in the Reds' title-winning campaign, Rooney selected the late away wins over Liverpool and Fulham, but his third choice is somewhat unexpected."One result that stands out in my mind is losing to Arsenal at home in September," he told the latest issue of Inside United."We went on a brilliant run of victories after that. We lost that game and everyone was saying 'the Reds are going to stumble', but we kept on going and we were unbeaten until December in the league."Despite a season that many people will remember for ...

Three's the magic number

Two cultured swings from David Beckham?s laser guided right foot gave England ?s hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008 a huge boost. The former England skipper made a triumphant return to the side at Wembley last Friday, setting up John Terry in the 1-1 draw with Brazil, although his contribution at the slightly less salubrious surroundings of the A. Le Coq Arena cannot be underestimated as England forged ahead for next summer?s showpiece event. After Joe Cole had sent England on their way with a delicious half-volley, Beckham set up Peter Crouch and Michael Owen in quick succession with two pinpoint crosses as England cruised to a crucial victory. With Group E leaders Croatia being held to a goalless draw by Russia, England?s players can recline on their poolside sunloungers this summer knowing qualification is still in their hands. On a warm summer?s evening in Tallinn, the home fans, the majority of whom were decked out in blue, gave their heroes a rousing reception when the teams emerged...

Season Review: Wayne Rooney
2007-06-06 15:00:00
"The important thing is winning, but if I'm scoring I'm doing my bit."Wayne Rooney What would the media do without Wayne Rooney? As it was with that other national obsession David Beckham, every move is scrutinised, every shrug of the shoulders on the pitch symbolises some deep-seated discontent. But let?s remember one important thing: Wayne Rooney is still just 21 years old. Now ask yourself this. How many 21 year-olds have a Premiership winner?s medal to savour? Answer? Not many. Not many 21 year-olds go to the Reebok Stadium and terrorise one of the most division?s most physical defences with a hat-trick, either. At the Reebok in October, Wayne silenced his critics with a trio of goals so sublime and perfect it was hard to believe that it was only the second time he had pulled off the feat in Red. There will surely be many more days like that ahead.Rooney will never be Ronaldo, the player he is so inextricably linked with for many: it is only really an accident of age and playing ...

Rooney: I can't put it into words
2007-05-13 21:13:00
Wayne Rooney was almost lost for words on Sunday after collecting his first Premiership winner's medal. The United striker told MUTV's Steve Bower: "I'm delighted. It's what all the hard work this season has been for."There's no greater feeling out there. It's fantastic. It's brilliant but really hard to explain. I'm absolutely delighted, I can't put into words, it's unbelievable."Rooney's enjoyment of winning the title was enhanced by the enormity of the task. Wayne had tried twice before to win the Premiership with United, losing out to Chelsea on both occasions, and the Reds had also missed out the season before he joined the club from Everton."It's a massive tournament for us to win," said Wayne."We've had 38 tough games so to come out on top of that league is great for us. Hopefully we won't have to wait for another four years to win it again."Now Wayne is targeting another personal first - an FA Cup winner's medal, having been a runner-up with the Reds at the end...
