Red crowned Champions!
2007-05-06 20:03:00
United have been crowned Premiership champions for a record ninth time after closest rivals Chelsea failed to beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.A first half penalty from Gilberto Silva gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Jose Mourinho's men who were reduced to ten men just before the break when Khalid Boulahrouz was sent off for a foul on Julio Baptista which led to the spot-kick.Michael Essien levelled on 70 minutes but the Blues could find no way through after that in a hugely tense affair.Twenty-four hours Chelsea had seen United secure a 1-0 win over local neighbours Manchester City on Saturday. It's the ninth Premiership title the Reds have won under Sir Alex Ferguson and it's arguably their greatest ever triumph. The Reds will be presented with the Champion s hip trophy after their final game of the season against West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday. Rooney: Kaká And Ronaldo Are The Key Players
2007-05-02 19:10:00
Wayne Rooney has admitted that he was impressed by AC Milan's Kaká in the first leg and believes that Cristiano Ronaldo deserves special praise for his performances this season. The Manchester United forward looked ahead to the second leg of the Champions League semi final and was complimentary about the media's favourite players."I think Kaká showed how good he is with his two goals and Ronaldo has proved himself all season by playing well week in, week out," Rooney told uefa.com.While Kaká netted a brace and Ronaldo showed glimpses of his magic in United's 3-2 win, it was the England international that stole the headlines with a late winner in the first game at Old Trafford.Despite being a regular in the side as United have battled on three fronts this term, Rooney is still feeling fresh and ready to help his side in their quest for silverware."It's the end of the season and I'm feeling good, feeling fit, and hopefully I can keep playing and scoring goals," he said.Sir Alex Fe...

Rooney: I'll win Sir Alex bet
2007-04-30 19:23:00
Sir Alex Ferguson could be out of pocket for the second time this season if Wayne Rooney can win his bet with the Reds boss.Cristiano Ronaldo has already won his wager with Sir Alex after surpassing the 15-goal mark earlier in the campaign. The Portuguese winger has lost several bets with the manager in recent seasons, but won this season. And now Rooney is looking to take more cash off Sir Alex."People have criticised me for not scoring enough, and it does bother me when I'm not hitting the back of the net," Rooney admitted recently. The critiscism is almost dumbfounding when you consider that - by trade, a support striker - he is United's top scorer with 23 goals already this season, and can lay claim to being the team's highest assist-maker."I'm on a nice little run and hopefully I can keep it going and win the bet I've had with the manager," he adds. "There's not a lot of money involved, but it's a nice little incentive. The most important thing is that the team keeps winn...

Fergie calls on Moyes to end Rooney action
2007-04-28 10:30:00
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has pleaded with Everton boss David Moyes to call off his legal row with Wayne Rooney .Moyes has launched proceedings against Rooney over comments the England striker made about his former manager in his autobiography Wayne Rooney - My Life So Far.The Everton manager claims Rooney alleged he had betrayed the player's trust and confidence by leaking sensitive personal information to the press. The Scot felt so angered at the allegations, which he believes injured his professional and personal reputation, and caused him serious embarrassment and distress, he decided to pursue the matter with the courts and launched formal proceedings last week.As it presently stands there appears no likelihood of either party backing down. However, Ferguson is hoping the matter can be sorted out quickly."I am not sure where it stands at the moment but it is not nice to read about it," he said."I am sure David Moyes will be getting proper legal advice I am sur...

Rooney relieved by winner
2007-04-25 10:32:00
Match winner Wayne Rooney admits his injury-time clincher makes life easier for United going into next week's Champions League decider in the San Siro. The striker struck twice in the second half to overturn AC Milan's 2-1 half-time lead and put United 3-2 up going into the semi-final, second leg next Wednesday, and he was predictably delighted to strike so late.?It?s a great feeling," he told ITV Sport. "It was a difficult match but when it got late we kept going. We knew the victory would make it a little bit easier for the away leg. And to get a goal in the last minute is a great feeling.?It was fantastic. At 2-1 behind at half-time against a very good Milan team, we knew it would be difficult to get the win. The manager told us too keep pushing, keep going and we?ll get the goals, and we did."Rooney's first goal, which brought the score to 2-2 after an hour, owed much to an inspirational lobbed pass from Paul Scholes, and Rooney was quick to pay tribute to his team-mate.?I see...

Rooney up for Milan test
2007-04-24 20:00:00
Wayne Rooney wants to help fire the Reds into the Champions League final by proving this United team has vastly improved and matured since losing to AC Milan in 2005.The Reds meet Carlo Ancelotti's side two years since losing 1-0 in both legs of the Champions League last 16 against the Rossoneri. After the match Sir Alex Ferguson intimated that the defeat would mark a watershed in the development of Rooney and several other young United players. Now the 21-year-old forward, who scored in both legs of the Reds? quarter final triumph over Milan?s Serie A rivals AS Roma, is determined to prove his manager right.?Since those games I?ve learnt a lot from playing with good players around me,? he told United Review. ?But it also helps just playing Champions League football regularly.?Back then it was my first year at United and I was finding my feet in a lot of ways. But now I am settled and playing much better football. I just hope I can help us do well and help the team get through.?We?r...

Hey everyone,What a day for the United fans! Newcastle managed to clinch a draw against Chelsea! I couldn't sleep yesterday because of our draw against Boro but thanks to The Magpies, I can sleep well tonight :)The other thing was Ronman securing both PFA awards! The lad totally deserved both awards! Not a player in the whole world can match his performance. Other United players were fantastic namely Scholes and Giggs. Rooney could have won the young one if he had been playing well at the start of the season...And Guess what, 8 players from the United squad have been chosen in the PFA team of the year! I can't figure out why Rooney wasn't included. They probably choose a striker who scores more goals...But anyway, I personally think Rooney and Essien should have replaced Berbatov and Gerrard respectively! Here's the complete team:Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra (all Man Utd); Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo (all Man Utd) an...

Rooney is sued by Moyes over book
2007-04-21 16:17:00
England footballer Wayne Rooney is being sued by ex-manager David Moyes over comments made in the striker's autobiography "My Story So Far".In a writ issued at the High Court, Everton boss Moyes claimed the book had "injured his professional and personal reputation" and caused him distress.Moyes is objecting to an account of how Rooney came to leave Everton.Libel proceedings have also been issued against the book's author Hunter Davies and publishers Harper Collins. If the writ is not settled the case will go before the High Court.Moyes has asked for an injunction preventing the offending passage of the book from being published again.A spokesman for Rooney refused to comment on the proceedings and Moyes's solicitor was unavailable. The player became the then youngest Premiership goalscorer with a last-minute strike to secure a 2-1 win against Arsenal in October 2002, five days before his 17th birthday.Rooney went on to score 17 goals in 77 appearances for the Toffees before securi...

Rooney predicts Ronny double
2007-04-20 08:31:00
Wayne Rooney believes team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo could do the double at Sunday's PFA Player of the Year ceremony. The striker reckons the Reds' winger has every chance of scooping the main prize and the Young Player of the Year honour.Ronaldo faces competition from Chelsea's Didier Drogba, Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas for the top award, while team-mates Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are also in the running."I think Ronaldo will win it [the main award], but he could win both," Rooney, who is also nominated for the Young Player award, told ManUtd.com. "He?s been brilliant all season."I picked Drogba ? only because we weren?t allowed to pick any of our team-mates. But Drogba has been fantastic this season, as has Cesc Fabregas, who I voted for Young Player of the Year."I hope Ronaldo will win it. If he does, it will be fully deserved."Source: ManUtd.com

Rooney clauses could bring £7m Everton bonus
2007-04-19 09:06:00
Everton will benefit by £1.65m if Wayne Rooney and Manchester United end the season having secured a treble success in the Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League. The England striker moved from Goodison Park to Old Trafford in the summer of 2004 for an initial fee of £20m but the terms of the deal include bonus payments of up to £7m. Some £23m has now been paid to the Merseyside club even though none of the clauses relating to the securing of honours has as yet been activated. That could change in the next few weeks as United attempt to secure their first Premiership title since 2003 and meet Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley next month. Those honours would earn Everton £500,000 and £150,000 respectively, with another £1m due should Sir Alex Ferguson's side edge beyond Milan in the Champions League semi-finals and go on to lift the trophy in Athens against either Liverpool or Chelsea on May 23. Should United lose in Greece, Everton would still benefit by £500,000.The total cou...

Rooney raring to go as United enter final weeks of Premiership season
2007-04-17 12:19:00
Wayne Rooney admits Manchester United 's breathtaking form has reinvigorated him for the decisive final weeks of the season.United have enjoyed a week to remember with Tuesday's 7-1 Champions League thrashing of Roma followed by a 4-1 FA Cup semi-final win over Watford on Saturday. Those magnificent displays underlined exactly why Rooney is desperate to play in every game despite the hectic schedule faced by Sir Alex Ferguson's treble chasers. The England striker, who scored twice against Watford, is convinced he can take the strain of putting his body on the line in so many high-stakes games."I have never experienced an end of season like this one before but I don't need a rest," Rooney said."I love to play. I feel fit and strong and a match every three or four days is fine by me. That is what you come to a big club for."We have not played as well as this during my time at United. Some of our attacking football has been brilliant and I am delighted to be a part of it."United's wi...

Rooney: It was tough
2007-04-15 19:36:00
Sir Alex Ferguson claimed Wayne Rooney 's performance against Watford was the striker's best of the season, but the Reds' No.8 refused to dwell on his own form in United's convincing 4-1 win.Rooney struck twice to send the Reds to Wembley and proved too hot for the Hornets' defence to handle."It was a big game today and Watford made it tough for us," Rooney said. "We were looking to have a quick start and we managed that with the early goal [Rooney's first, on seven minutes]. I scored a few goals playing from out wide so I'm sure that's where I'll probably play in the next game."The Reds scored 11 goals in just two games this week but Rooney was quick to point out Saturday's FA Cup victory wasn't as easy as it looked."They're a physical team and we knew at some point in the game we'd have to defend. I think up until 1-1 and just after half-time we had to battle and we did that well."Watford put us under pressure with some long balls and long throw-ins, so we were delight...

Rooney calls for Ronaldo magic
2007-04-09 20:46:00
Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo are often spoken of in the same breath at Old Trafford, but the Englishman says his Portuguse team-mate is the one who can conjure the magic to fire United into the Champions League semi finals.United take on Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday and, thanks to Rooney?s sublime intervention after an hour at Stadio Olimpico a week ago, the Reds are well placed with an away goal despite being 2-1 down in the tie.Rooney and Ronaldo were part of the United side that lost to AC Milan two years ago in a game that was seen as a watershed in their development on the European stage. Now Rooney says the pair are more mature and ready to lead the Reds into the last four of the competition.?Against AC Milan a few years ago, myself, Cristiano and a few of the other players were still quite young,? says the 21-year-old striker. ?Playing against the likes of Maldini and Nesta gives you a platform to learn from.?Since then we?ve both improved as players.
