Rooney a hit with Ferdinand
2007-04-07 12:37:00
Rio Ferdinand believes Wayne Rooney 's crucial Champions League strike against Roma has got the goalscoring 'monkey off his back'.The Manchester United striker netted for the first time in Europe since his debut-day hat-trick two-and-a-half years ago when he finished off a brilliant counter-attack in the Stadio Olimpico last Wednesday night. It earned United a precious away goal in a 2-1 defeat that leaves their quarter-final finely poised going into Tuesday?s second leg.?I think it?s a monkey off his back a little bit,? United and England team-mate Ferdinand said in the Sun.?Everyone?s been going on about him not scoring in Europe a lot.?When you have a player with Wayne?s ability, people will be asking questions if he hasn?t scored for a couple of games.?I was just happy he got a goal and now he can continue to do what he?s doing.?Rooney?s goalscoring drought against foreign opposition also extends to the international stage, with his last competitive goal for England almost thre...

Ferguson grateful to Rooney for Champions League lifeline
2007-04-06 14:35:00
Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney 's first Champions League goal for two-and-a-half years has left Manchester United in a strong postion to reach the semi-finals.Rooney, who had not scored in the competition since netting a hat-trick against Fenerbahce in September 2004, gave United a lifeline with a precious away goal in a 2-1 defeat to Roma in a highly-charged quarter-final, first leg.Asked if the goal would help Rooney's confidence, Ferguson replied: "I think it helps us more."Obviously we can take great encouragement from the away goal, and I think we can put a side out next Tuesday that can go and win the match."Rodrigo Taddei put Roma ahead with a deflected shot in the 44th minute after United had Paul Scholes sent off for two yellow cards, his first already ruling him out of next week's second leg at Old Trafford.Rooney showed a remarkably cool head for such young shoulders on the hour, equalising with a delightful finish after controlling Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's righ...

Rooney: Fans will be key
2007-04-05 11:16:00
Wayne Rooney believes home advantage will play a vital role in securing the Reds' place in the Champions League semi-finals when Roma visit Old Trafford next Tuesday. The striker scored United's only goal at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night in the Reds' 2-1 defeat but AS Roma must now come to Manchester for the second leg."We knew once we got the goal it would be difficult for them to come to Old Trafford with the fans we have there," Rooney said."The position we're in now is as good as a 0-0, so it's not too bad."Rooney's 60th minute strike, his first in Europe since his sensational debut hat-trick against Fenerbahce in 2004, drew ten-man United level at 1-1. His clinical execution followed strong build-up play from Cristiano Ronaldo and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer."Ronny did brilliantly," praised Rooney. "Then Ole played a great ball in for me and I managed to finish it off."Roma went ahead again six minutes after Rooney's equaliser and continued to threaten United's goal."T...

We couldn't be more offensive than that because they have got great players who can score specially when our defense misses both Gary and Vidic. Also, Scholes who couldn't control his temper and made some nasty tackles, affected us a lot being our leader in the midfield together with Giggs.If...

Boss backs star duo
2007-04-04 11:19:00
Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo to come up with the goods for United in Europe.Surprisingly given his league form this term, Ronaldo is yet to find the net in the Champions League for the Reds, while Rooney hasn?t scored since his debut hat-trick against Fenerbahce in September 2004.But Sir Alex isn?t concerned by the statistics because of their contribution to the team. But he would dearly hope the two can change their respective records at Stadio Olimpico tonight when the Reds face AS Roma.?We haven?t scored a lot of goals in Europe in the last few years,? he said. ?Maybe it's just young players adapting to the Champions League.?Sometimes Wayne?s overall contribution gets overlooked. We?re certainly not concerned, his form has been very good. He has created so many openings in matches, not just for himself, for the rest of the team.?And, at the moment, I think Ronaldo is the best player in the world. His form this season has been fantastic.?Every t...

Rooney unfazed by goal shortage
2007-04-02 23:37:00
Wayne Rooney has insisted his lack of goals is not a problem - as long as his Manchester United team-mates go on to seal the Premiership title. The 21-year-old's recent struggles in front of goal for both club and country have drawn widespread attention after he drew a blank in England's Euro 2008 qualification double-header against Israel and Andorra last week.Rooney followed that with an unusually profligate performance against Blackburn at Old Trafford on Saturday and was relieved to see United nonetheless fight back from a goal down to win 4-1.Although the striker has a healthy 16 goals to his name already this season, he has managed just three from his last 13 appearances. But Rooney is adamant his personal tally is unimportant so long as United continue their seemingly unstoppable march to the title.Asked if his goal drought was a problem, he insisted: "No, not really. We are top of the league at the moment so I'm not really worried."We are playing well and scoring goals, the...

Rooney energy is crucial
2007-03-19 17:49:00
Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted he can call on the youthful exuberance of Wayne Rooney as United cope with the demands of playing two games in three days.Saturday's win over Bolton Wanderers is quickly followed by Monday night's FA Cup quarter-final replay against Middlesbrough, and the Boss is relieved to have the likes of Rooney in his ranks."Players like Rooney and Ronaldo have the enthusiasm, guts and courage to play every game," Sir Alex told reporters on Friday."It doesn't bother Wayne if he plays every two days or every three days, he'd play every day if he could - that's the type of lad he is. We're lucky to have a boy like that."After a sporadic run of goals in the first half of the season, Sir Alex has been pleased by Rooney's regular scoring and general play of late."In the last few games he's been working his socks off," he said. "He's made a great contribution to our team."In training sessions he's looking brilliant and you saw that last week (against Middlesbr...

Rooney targets cup success
2007-03-13 09:19:00
The Premiership may be United’s main priority and the Champions League is often cited as European football’s holy grail, but Wayne Rooney is determined to make up for losing to Arsenal on penalties in the 2005 FA Cup final by winning the competition this season. The 21-year-old striker put United in front against Middlesbrough in the quarter final clash at the Riverside on Saturday, but Cristiano Ronaldo had to rescue the tie from the spot after the Reds conceded goals either side of half-time.Sir Alex’s side are in the pot for today's semi final draw, but first must overcome a replay against Boro on Monday at Old Trafford, with Rooney determined to finish off the job.“Obviously, we'd liked to have gone straight through, but the main thing is that we’re still in the draw,” he told MUTV. “It was disappointing to lose goals just before and just after half time, but it’s a difficult place to come to get a result so we’re pleased that, having gone behind, we fought ba...

Fergie tips Rooney to come good
2007-03-10 21:02:00
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is confident that it won't be long before Wayne Rooney is back on top of his game.Ferguson admitted he took a calculated gamble with the 21-year-old England striker for the midweek Champions League clash against Lille, playing him with a strapping to protect his injured knee. However, despite a below-par performance, the United boss is confident Rooney will be back to his best when United travel to Teesside to take on Middlesbrough in the FA Cup quarter-finals."Wayne was not quite on top form against Lille," said Ferguson."He was a little bit restricted because he played with a strapping on."Also, we played him wide, which is not his best position."Maybe we did take a chance with Wayne but I asked him if he wanted to come off at half-time because we have such a long season in front of us and he said no."He worked his socks off and showed fantastic application, which is a credit to him but once we scored, I was delighted to get him off."Sou...

Rooney fit to face Lille
2007-03-06 11:59:00
Wayne Rooney has recovered from the knee injury he suffered at Anfield on Saturday and will be fit for United's Champions League clash against Lille on Wednesday.United are a goal to the good in their last 16 tie thanks to Ryan Giggs' much-disputed late goal in Lens two weeks ago, but there had been some as to whether Rooney would be fit for the second leg clash at Old Trafford. The Reds' striker came off worse following a collision with Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher which left Rooney with a large gash just above his knee, which required eight stitches. He was replaced soon by John O'Shea, who went on to be United's goalscoring hero in the game with an injury-time winner in front of the Kop.Rooney had a scan after the match but Sir Alex Ferguson has since confirmed the 21-year-old is available to play against Lille."Wayne will be okay for Wednesday," the boss told ManUtd.com. "We have a couple of doubts but Wayne is not one of them."Elsewhere, Paul Scholes is available despi...

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney will have a scan on Sunday to determine the extent of the knee problem he sustained at Liverpool.Rooney, injured when he went in for a tackle with Jamie Carragher, appears to be doubtful for Wednesday's crucial Champions League tie with Lille."Wayne will go for a scan," manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the club website."It was a bad tackle - Carragher got him right on the knee. Rooney: Ron is world's best
2007-03-01 21:33:00
Wayne Rooney admits he is relishing being in the same team as Cristiano Ronaldo, the player he sees as the world's best at present. The young duo crossed swords during last summer's World Cup, but England striker Rooney insists there is no rivalry between himself and the Portuguese winger.Rooney told Sport magazine: "Is there rivalry between us? No, no, not at all. I'm just delighted that he's playing for us because at this moment in time he is the best player in the world - not just the best young player, but the best player full stop."There's certainly no jealousy on my part over that. You want to play with the best players, and it's great to be in the same team as Cristiano."The aftermath of the pair's World Cup clash, which saw Rooney sent off, attracted frenzied media attention and brought Ronaldo endless vilification from opposing fans throughout this season. But Rooney said: "He's been brilliant, especially after all he had to cope with on coming back from the World Cup...

Rooney ready to explode
2007-02-19 09:49:00
Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Wayne Rooney can continue his fine recent form in Tuesday's Champions League visit to Lille. The 21-year-old sat out Saturday's FA Cup draw with Read ing, but had bagged four goals in his previous five United appearances. And a positive Sir Alex opined: "It will happen for Wayne. He’ll explode onto the scene, there's no question about that."I’m hoping that he takes into the Lille game and matches the form he’s showing now for us."Over the last few weeks he’s certainly come back to his best."The Gaffer also played down fears over Rooney's temperament, voicing his faith in the striker's ability to keep calm in the high-pressure environment of Europe."The stage will not affect Wayne," he said. "As we know, the temperament is fantastic for a young lad, I’ve no worries about that."Source: ManUtd.com

Reading force replay with Man Utd
2007-02-17 20:20:00
Steve Coppell's Read ing surprised Manchester United at Old Trafford to earn an FA Cup fifth round replay.Michael Carrick unleashed a shot from outside the edge of the box that rocketed past Adam Federici into the net to give United a first-half lead.Cristiano Ronaldo had three shots on goal in the opening stages of the second half but all of them went wide. And against the run of play Brynjar Gunnarsson powered a header past Tomasz Kuszczak from a corner to make it 1-1.Gunnarsson had last played on New Year's Day, when he scored in the 6-0 win over West Ham in the Premiership, but he showed no signs of rustiness in the way he took his goal. The last 10 minutes provided a thrilling finale as Federici brilliantly denied substitute Henrik Larsson with a fingertip save, while Wes Brown had to head clear as Reading threatened. In stoppage time Louis Saha broke clear but pulled his shot wide. With both sides resting key players and Reading relying on a counter-attacking strategy, the game h...

Rooney has bagged four goals in his last five games and is looking close to being back to his best.United and Chelsea are separated by six points and both have 11 league games left this season - five at home and six away.At the start of 2006, Rooney scored eight goals before fracturing his metatarsal in the 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge in late April."If Wayne can reach the kind of form he achieved this time last year, we have got an even better chance," said Ferguson."He was devastating last year and there are glimpses of that coming back now."Scoring against Arsenal, his double against Portsmouth and another one against Watford - these are all signs that he is getting back."The United boss is troubled by the tough away games the Red Devils face as they push for their ninth Premiership title. The champions-elect have to visit Stamford Bridge and Anfield plus another quartet of grounds before the end of the season.Ferguson believes the destination of the title will depend on how they...

Injury concerns for Reds
2007-02-09 18:20:00
Sir Alex Ferguson has a number of injury concerns ahead of the Premiership clash with Charlton at Old Trafford on Saturday.Edwin van der Sar is definitely out after breaking his nose in the victory at Tottenham last Sunday. Tomasz Kuszczak will deputise, with Reserves' stopper Tom Heaton likely to be on the bench.John O'Shea - who took over in goal from van der Sar for the final ten minutes at White Hart Lane - is also unavailable after picking up an ankle knock whilst on international duty for the Republic of Ireland earlier this week.Michael Carrick (groin) and Cristiano Ronaldo (head cold) should hopefully be fit to face the Addicks, while Wayne Rooney has recovered from the hip injury which forced him off after an hour against Spurs.Source: ManUtd.com
