Rooney savours sweet win
2007-12-25 00:05:00 Wayne Rooney says United's 2-1 victory over Everton on Sunday was extra special because it came against his former side.A Cristiano Ronaldo brace gave the Reds a vital win over a dogged Toffees side at Old Trafford.Rooney, who made the switch from Goodison Park in the summer of 2004, savoured the victory and also paid tribute to team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo for his part in the win."Of course, it is extra special to beat my old team," he told MUTV."There is a bit of banter between myself and the Everton fans. Sometimes I come out on top, sometimes they do. But the most important thing is that we got the three points."I watched Cristiano practice penalties in training on Saturday and he put every one in exactly the same place. That is why he practices," he added."His first goal was a great strike. We all know what he can do, so there is no surprise there."The Reds are now preparing for their Boxing Day trip to Sunderland and Rooney is expecting another tough encounter."We always have ... On the same wavelength
2007-12-19 06:59:00 Wayne Rooney believes his blossoming partnership with Carlos Tevez is down to telepathy.Doubts were cast over whether the duo could play together when Tevez first joined the club with pundits believing them to be too similar. But 15 goals between them in the 11 games they have started together has put paid to that theory.Rooney admits the pair are not regular communicators because of the fact Tevez speaks little English, leaving them to rely simply on instinct and eye contact."We don't talk to each other very much because we don't speak the same language, but that doesn't matter when you are playing with a great talent like Carlos," explained Rooney. "We do a lot of hard work together on the training pitch, but the understanding between us seems to be very natural anyway."It's all about eye contact. It's just a glance here or a nod there and we instinctively know what the other one is going to do and when and where we want the ball to be played. It's a case of playing the game... And Rooney is looking forward to what could be a pivotal day in the title race.?It's a massive weekend for the top four clubs,? he told ManUtd.com.?The fact that Arsenal and Liverpool both lost last weekend was great for us. We know that if we win on Sunday then we?ve got a great chance of going top. Maradona: Rooney's the best
2007-12-07 09:40:00 Former World Cup winner Diego Maradona says Wayne Rooney is better than Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi .The Argentinian ace doesn?t believe AC Milan midfielder Kaka should have won the prestigious Ballon d?Or award, but neither does he think second-placed Cristiano Ronaldo deserved the accolade.Instead, the Argentina legend reckons Ronaldo?s United team-mate Wayne Rooney has a far stronger claim to the title of best footballer in the world.?I don?t know too well how the election is done, but I think that Rooney is better than Kaka,? Maradona told El Grafico.?Milan is a team that depends all the time on Kaka but that doesn?t make him the best player in the world.?Rooney returned to action on Monday against Fulham after almost a month on the sidelines through injury. His ankle strain suffered in training halted a run of eight goals in seven games.Ronaldo has since picked up the baton, and with two goals against the Cottagers earlier this week he took his tally to 11 goals in ... Roo and Rio to motivate
2007-11-20 06:32:00 Steve McClaren has asked Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand to use their influence in the England camp to deliver rousing rallying calls ahead of Wednesday's crunch qualifier against Croatia .England's decimated ranks will be shorn of the injured Rooney and suspended Ferdinand for the Wembley clash, which will see England qualify as long as they avoid defeat. While McClaren will rue the absence of two of his key players, he has called for the pair to be involved in the pre-match preparations.Eager to foster a sense of unity, both in the dressing room and in the stands, McClaren feels those players absent, possibly including John Terry, could help to deliver a chorus of support."We are going to contact them all," said McClaren."I have spoken to them. We need them at the game, as well as in the dressing room together with us. It would be grand to have them here."Source: Sky Sports More About: Euro 2008
England gifted lifeline by Israel
2007-11-18 08:48:00 England earned a Euro 2008 qualifying reprieve with their fate again in their own hands after Group E rivals Russia dramatically lost 2-1 in Israel .England are now two points ahead of Russia and need a draw against Croatia in their final qualifier on Wednesday to secure a Euro 2008 place.Israel took the lead through Elyaniv Barda before Diniyar Bilyaletdinov levelled as Russia started to dominate.Russia hit the post late on before Omer Golan netted a winner for Israel. The goal would have been the cue for celebrations from England boss Steve McClaren and his players who were relying on Israel to do them a favour.McClaren's job would also have been in jeopardy if Russia had won but his belief that the campaign would go into the Croatia game proved correct. There were plenty of England fans at the Ramat Gan stadium to cheer on Israel, while a strong Russian contingent were also evident to provide support for their team.Russia started off nervously and went behind when Barda was slipped... Rooney targets captain's armband
2007-11-17 14:43:00 Striker Wayne Rooney has revealed his dreams of becoming Manchester United captain one day.The 22-year-old England international has admitted that he has a desire to win more silverware with the Red Devils, with the ultimate aim being to captain the side in the process.Rooney, who is sidelined for around a month after sustaining an ankle injury at United's training ground, said:"If I got chosen to be captain, it would be a great honour.""I think you play football to win things, to make people happy and to make history."If I can have half the success that the Busby Babes did at United [in the 1950s], then I'd be delighted with that."You definitely want to be remembered and not forgotten, so I suppose everybody wants to be part of history."Rooney scored seven goals in his last seven games for United before injury ruled him out of Sir Alex Ferguson's side, but he says his good record doesn't make him complacent."It's definitely been a good time for me goals-wise - I've been scori... Boss rues 'freak accident'
2007-11-11 08:23:00 Sir Alex admits losing Wayne Rooney to injury is "sickening", especially given the striker's recent form.Rooney's scored eight times in United's last seven games but has now been ruled out for four weeks following an ankle injury sustained in training on Friday."It was an absolute freak accident," the Reds' boss told Manchester United Radio. "He was playing a game of head tennis and he caught his foot on the stanchion that holds up the net. It's a sickening blow but hopefully he'll be back in four weeks."He's been in red-hot form recently, but that's football. He'll miss our games against Blackburn and Bolton and it's obviously a big loss for England too. I think Rooney was the man who could take England to the European championships."Rooney's injury came within hours of Sir Alex's announcement that French forward Louis Saha would be used sparingly from the bench in the coming weeks. 2007-11-09 20:29:00 Wayne Rooney will be out of action for up to four weeks after injuring his ankle in training on Friday. The striker will miss Sunday's match against Blackburn Rovers.
