Wellway?s Weekly Rant - MSU edition
2007-10-12 21:45:00
Obviously, the Tennessee Volunteers football team took advantage of their lone bye week of the season by coming out and playing their best ballgame of the year and defeating Georgia 35-14 last Saturday on a blazing hot October afternoon at Neyland Stadium.

What a weekend down on the bayou as LSU hands Florida its second straight loss 28-24. The Gators appeared to control the momentum of this slugfest between SEC titans for most of the night but the Tigers remain undefeated as the undoubted number one ranked team in America behind the aggressive decision making of Coach Les Myles.

Happy New Year!!! Surely I am not the only Vol fan that has Auld Lang Syne playing on a continuous loop in my home, in the office and in the car? All of the sudden everything feels new again. Auburn handed the Volunteers a Christmas present last week, and on New Year?s Eve the Vols decided it was time to celebrate.

Some predictions are better left unmade. The SEC West is an utter jumble. If my math is correct, there are 24 possible orders of finish for the teams I pick 3-6 in the division.

This column is usually designed to focus on the SEC, however there is a polarizing issue resonating in the Big 12 and expanding into pop culture. Last weekend, Oklahoma St. gave up a school record 718 yards of total offense but defeated Texas Tech in a shootout 49-45. That, however, is neither where the story begins nor where it ends.
Volunteers look for improvement over bye week

The University of Tennessee?s football team has certainly had a rough month of September. The schedule did not do Phil Fulmer?s young team any favors by having to face two of the Top 6 teams in America on the road.

The empirical data suggests that the Tennessee football program has fallen from the conference elite into more of an SEC middle class. The numbers speak for themselves. Tennessee is the fifth best team in the SEC since 2001.

The polls list USC as the top team in the country and it's tough to argue that unless you have seen LSU play this year. I understand that USC is an unbelievably talented team that has rolled off quite a run over the last few years. USC is 60-6 since 2002.

Trailing 38-21 early in the third quarter Arian Foster broke free down the left side of the field to the California 2 yard line. After one run for no gain and an incomplete pass, UT faced third and goal from the 2. The Vols took a time out after Lucas Taylor gained one on a quarterback draw.

Concerns for Vols as Cal game looms
2007-08-24 21:38:00
As we thankfully head towards the game next weekend in Berkeley against Cal, some valid concerns are surfacing concerning the 2007 Tennessee Volunteers football team. Through my experience, fans and coaches alike go through paralysis by analysis at this point in the preseason and forget that these young men were all All-State or All-America somewhere in high school.
